Chapter 15: In Which One Becomes Acquainted with the Dangers of Nobles.

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Max followed along as Luna led him to one of the storage rooms. Unsurprisingly, there wasn't an armory so much as one storage room for weapons and armor and a second for other tools. The one for tools was...kind of empty.

"Oh dear," Luna whispered, realizing this may be more difficult than originally suspected.

"I suppose we'll have to make some shovels and picks. I don't know how well stone would work, but if you or your sister could shape some stone like you did with the walls we could have a starting point at least. I'd like to get a forge up before too long, but I have no clue about what's needed aside from a lot of fuel for a fire and some materials that won't melt at high heat. Bellows maybe. I remember seeing those near forges in some medieval games," Max rattled off as he walked past the alicorn into the cellar. "We could melt down weapons and armor for some metal tools, but I don't think I'd suggest that just yet. We likely barely have enough arms for the guards."

Stopping during his inspection, he looked back to Luna.

"You and Celestia are going to be checking up on that nearby village, right? I'd check to see if they have a blacksmith. If nothing else you could learn how to build a forge of your own."

"Tia wishes to lead this expedition," Luna said as she watched the changeling make his round of the room. "Would you be willing to travel with her? It shall not be far, and you could stay around the village. It would allow you to make your notes."

The stallion nodded.

"Hook me up with some paper and pencils and I'll do what I can. Why do you need me to go, though? I'm sure there are others who could sketch the basics of a forge or ask the local smith. That's assuming there is one, of course."

"We understand, but we worry that another may not remember to ask for important details, like the shape of the forge or the materials used, or..."

"Or about the flue," the changing added. "That kind of fire must have some venting as well. Alright. I'll watch for your sister, as well."

The lunar alicorn flushed in embarrassment.

"Y-yes, well you were quite knowledgeable in medical matters when compared to our knights. Most do not know more than wrapping a wound and you were speaking of proper care of medical tools to prevent infection. We, our sister and ourself, did battle with Discord but it was always a game to him. We fear Tia is not prepared for what she is about to encounter. Should she find herself injured-"

"I'm no doctor. I took a baby sitting course five years ago at my mother's suggestion. That's the height of my medical experience," he shot at her with a frown.

"Even if you can do nothing, you can ease her pain. Our bodies, Starswirl said alicorns are more durable than normal ponies. What would kill a Pegasus would only injure us. Even if you are only there to watch over her..."

"Alright. Alright I'll go with her," he relented, holding up a hoof to forestall the mare's hug. "In return though, I'd like two of your knights to stay with me if you can spare them."

"Done. Tia still doesn't have a time for her journey, nor have either of us done something like this. Any aid you can provide would be appreciated. You have traveled, correct? With the intent to return to your home?"

"Yea I'll talk to her about it," he agreed. "Can't be too bad, just planning a trip for, how many Knights are going?"

"We believe the number that we would be able to spare would be around thirty. Thank you. It means much to us. Tia is frustrating at times but...she is our sister. We would be remiss if we did not worry for her well being," Luna offered with a sigh.

Max nodded, continuing to look through the few boxes and bags that were scattered about the room. While it was dark, he once more found himself having no issue seeing, even when peering into the boxes. Finding one that was actually full, he sat down and began rummaging through the bits and bobs inside.

A surge of lust caused him to jerk his head upright and perk his ears just as Luna's hooves wrapped around him from behind.

"We must see to it that you are properly supplied for your journey. It would not do for you to become hungry on your trip."

"Are you a masochist?" he asked, turning to look at her and receiving a kiss on the cheek.

"What is a masochist?" the mare asked, looking genuinely confused.

The stallion sighed. He'd likely regret explaining this to her.

Celestia scowled at the changeling as the evening meal was being served. Okay, it wasn't a scowl; she couldn't afford to scowl with the nobility filing in. Not only was Luna's face scarlet, she could tell by the way she kept sneaking glances of the changeling that it was something he did. Breathing in through her nose and attempting to calm herself, she let her gaze slide over the ponies that were walking in. Many of them looked put upon, even though they jumped at the opportunity to be around the alicorns again.

'They might regret that decision in the coming moments.'

The meal was served and the group ate in comfortable silence. Celestia enjoyed the fare, a simple blend of toasted vegetables and hay mixed with a light and flowery dressing. Even as she ate though, her mind was running through the day.

'I can not believe so little has been accomplished. Two years, and most of the work was done by Luna and I,' she thought to herself sadly. 'We raised the very castle in which we now live while the peasants that come to us live in shacks outside our door. The changeling is correct that we must solve the problems in order of magnitude and based on what resources are available, but I just feel like more could be done for them.'

She felt almost used, as if the nobility were merely distracting her and fattening themselves off of her pantry. If none could back up their claims of working for the ponies that had approached the castle for safety then perhaps it was time to clean house.

As the conversations started up, signifying that the majority of those gathered were finished with their meals, Celestia asked a knight to bring in the map they had created earlier that day. It was a simple thing, true. But it was the only one she knew of at the moment. A few nobles went quiet as the guard returned with the rolled paper, wondering what was going on. Judging by the smirk on the changelings face and the fact that he was looking to several particular nobles, some were becoming anxious. That didn't bode well for her faith in them.

Feeling she was putting it off long enough, she took the rolled map and set it beside her plate. Clearing her throat, she gazed over the nobles while she spoke.

"Honored guests, for some time we have watched over the land around this keep. Two years ago we alicorns raised it from the earth and shaped the stone ourselves, erecting a home for ourselves and, we hoped, to those who would join us. Many of you approached and offered to aid us, citing noble blood and birth that left you better suited for such a task. We accepted and left you to do as was needed. To do as you thought best. I ask you now; what plans have you made for our land and when will they be implemented."

Many eyes widened, the nobles whispering amongst themselves and several pointing at each other then at her. With each passing moment, her stomach dropped. Surely there were a few that had something to offer her. Surely her court was not comprised entirely of leeches and tail-riders.

"Your highness," a pink maned and red furred earth pony mare started, drawing Celestia's eyes and causing her hope to return. "I have, I gathered the seeds for the fields that were supposed to be prepared. I am uncertain who it was that claimed preparation of the fields, but the seeds are in a storage closet near my room. I have been, watching to make certain they are not damaged by pests or weather."

The white alicorn smiled gratefully. It wasn't something she'd thought of, in fact even during their planning earlier at lunch neither the alicorns nor the changeling had thought about the actual seeds for the fields. It was what the nobility were supposed to be for. To remember things that slipped by her and her sister.

Once more the table descended into silence, much more whispering going on this time. She heard a few accusations, ponies swearing the one they were looking at was the one in charge of this or that. Luna was making no effort to hide her disgust, her face buried in her hooves. Max was likewise leaning heavily on a single foreleg, massaging his muzzle with a fetlock. A few nobles gave false starts, but none spoke.

"One?" Celestia asked incredulously. "One of you actually carried out their duties to this new home we have built?"

Luna slammed her hoof down on the table, causing the gathered ponies to jump.

"How long was this to continue? How long were you to feast on that which was not yours while those outside our walls waited in poverty? How long would you have kept us in the dark as to the actual state of our kingdom? Noble Flint Chip, did you not tell mine sister last week that things were going apace when she asked you for information? To what plan were they going apace? There is no mine, there is no field, there are no actual homes outside our walls. There is not even a well, something we specifically requested when ponies first began arriving!"

"Disappointed is one word we would use in this situation." Celestia said, having taken a drink of water. "Insulted is another. If you did nothing to earn your keep, you have stolen from us. Stolen that which ponies gave mine sister and ourself in thanks for our part in making this world safer for all."

Unrolling the map, she held it aloft in her magic and allowed those gathered to see it.

"Luna, Maximus, and ourself created this map over lunch. In less than one hour, we set up the basic plans for a field for the farmers, a mine, several roads, as well as several separate scrolls with itemized lists on how to organize the ponies outside our castle. Ways to reduce the danger or fires or sickness from having too many ponies living too closely together. The three of us did this over a single meal. You have had two years and claimed to be knowledgable in leading such efforts."

Rolling the map back up and tucking it under a wing, the mare stood from her cushion and turned to leave.

"We give you until tomorrow at dinner to bring to us your plans. Actual plans that have ponies assigned to jobs and that have been prepared. Do not bother bringing parchment with still-drying ink. Those of you who are found inside our home without these items after dinner will be escorted out of our home. This insult will no longer be tolerated."

With that, she left. She would go to the garden to read before turning in for the night. Perhaps one more chapter of The Brown Eyed Mare.

Max was torn between laughing at the panic he felt wafting off of the nobility and slamming his face into the table in disgust. One pony had done something. One! there were at least twelve others gathered in the dining hall today. Twelve individuals who were riding the coat-tails of the alicorns and eating them out of house and home, all while distracting the mares from what was going on outside the walls.

'I guess it could be denial,' he reasoned. 'They lost what they had, so they pretend they still have it? I have to wonder how many actually qualify as nobility at the moment. What are the requirements, anyway?'

Tapping Luna on the mare's shoulder, he leaned over to her ear and asked her in a whisper.

The alicorn cocked her head in thought. He tasted a bit of confusion and even a bit of embarrassment as she searched for an answer. Finally, she looked across the table.

"Lady Fortune, what are the requirements for assuming a title of nobility? We believe that one of your education could enlighten us."

The unicorn, who Max soon recognized from the bucket incident, sputtered and floundered at the question.

"Your highness, to ask such a thing in public, much less to acknowledge that one is unaware of such things, it simply isn't done. 'Tis a breach of the highest protocals of-"

"You don't actually know, do you?" Max cut in, having tasted her fear when Luna asked the question. The lines she was throwing out after the burst of fear smelled strongly of bullshit.

Lady Fortune gawked at the interruption, as did several of those gathered around her. Flushing with anger, she stood herself up with her hooves on the table.

"I will not stand this! Twice now you have insulted me, you, you thing! I will not allow it. I demand recompense!"

"You can bluff and huff and shout all you like but all your doing is wasting oxygen," the changeling retorted, looking at her with a condescending gaze.

The mare stared at him, her anger boiling over but too diluted by her fear and confusion brought on by Celestia's ultimatum to cause discomfort. Suddenly her emotions warped, causing Max to focus on her in curiosity.

"Blood."

Several nobles gasped, their emotions spiking with shock. Luna did as well, choking on her water and tapping her barrel with a hoof.

"Excuse us, did you really-"

"I demand blood for the insults I've been subjected to," Fortune said, her confidence slowly increasing as she spoke. "By my right as nobility, I demand honor be paid with blood."

'What?' Max thought, his eyes nearly crossing in confusion.

"And of course you would retain the right to assign a second," Luna said levelly while staring at the mare across the way.

At Fortune's nod, Luna gave a sharp nod of her own.

"We shall be Maximus' second. We offer the training courtyard tomorrow afternoon. Three hours after the midday meal. No magic aside from that which is used to wield the weapon. Swords will be the weapon of choice."

Max blinked in shock and looked over to Luna. She turned and gave him a slight smile.

"If you will accept, of course."

Max just stared at the blue alicorn, nodding dumbly at her. A moment later his brain finally caught up to his situation.

"I mean I'd appreciate it but you don't have to if-"

A hoof to his lips silenced him, Luna smiling deviously.

"'Tis only proper. After all, a mare should be willing to defend her stallion."

This time the changeling's eyes did cross, the situation now being cast in a different light. She was being chivalrous. Like some knight...

'Does that make me the damsel?'

"Of course, you shall have ample time to find your second, Lady Fortune, but recall that our Knights are not your own. You shall be required to field your own mare at arms. I assume a noble like yourself already has a few under her employ?" Luna asked casually.

"I, yes of course I do. I merely need to uh, find the proper one for this battle."

"Excellent. We would hate to have to track you down after you demanded the blood of our stallion. We are more attuned to our pegasus blood than our sister, and as such are very protective of our flock."

Standing up and ignoring the wide-eyed states of the ponies, Luna nudged him with her muzzle. The moment he was standing she began ushering him towards the door.

They cleared the room and a bit more to be safe before the alicorn sped up and grabbed his ear in her teeth.

"Ah! What the hell?"

"Be shilent," the mare growled, not releasing his ear until they had reached her room. Using her magic to pull the door open, she dragged him inside and closed the door behind them.

"We did not think about it at the time, but you require education on proper address of nobles, even those that are suspect. Accusations of dishonesty and fraud are assaults on honor and she is within her right to demand reconstitution for defacement."

"Even if she's lying through her teeth? Even if she starts accusing you of breaking protocol that may or may not exist?" Max challenged.

"Yes, even if she is a sham. To parade about as a noble is a horrid crime. They all know this. While some may truly be nobles, the truth matters not. To make accusations against their peers is to insult the lot of them."

Luna's fury softened a bit.

"You stated earlier that you have none to aid you but those allies you make here. We wish to help you Maximus, but we require your trust. Trust us to know our culture and to attempt to keep you from these problems."

The stallion opened his mouth to retort, but snapped it shut a second later.

'Making enemies, painting myself as a target. Shit, I can't be doing this right now. Even if there are some shams out there, some of the legitimate guys could jump on the chance to get rid of me. Especially if they thought I was a threat. This investigation only began after I arrived, so they would blame me for it.'

"That was a duel challenge, wasn't it?" He asked instead. "Duels, they haven't been used officially in more than a generation back home, maybe several. I didn't expect a call for blood, especially not from some blue unicorn mare that seemed to just yell a lot. I'm sorry, thank you for watching out for me."

"'Tis our pleasure. She may not even show herself. We do not remember seeing any ponies in her employ," Luna offered with a smile. "Now, you will make this up to us by continuing your practice with our wings. We expect you to put some effort into it and you will do so again after the duel. A proper preening is important for such an event."

The changeling followed her to the bed, jumping up and lying down just shy of a pace to her left. She spread the appropriate wing in front of him and relaxed, allowing herself to doze off even as he began carefully preening her wings as he'd been shown. It was still weird, doing this preening thing. The closest thing to it he could liken it to was mare-women brushing each other's hair. Of course, this seemed to be more of a family or close friend thing. Not to mention most things humans did didn't involve their mouths.

'Then again, they don't have hands. Not like you can just grab a...wait, they can use their hooves like hands. What even...'

He shook the thought off, spitting out a few loose feathers and returning to her wing. Tug, align, move on, tug, align, move on. It was almost hypnotic after a while. Something you could do for hours without noticing where the time went. In fact before he realized it, he found himself running out of feathers. Frowning and looking over her wing, he realized that it was done, that as far as he could tell he hadn't missed any. Carefully standing up and stretching, he moved around the alicorn and tapped on her shoulder. When she didn't extend the wing, he pushed harder, earning a grunt and a shift as Luna snuggled into her pillows.

'She fell asleep?'

He poked her a few more times to confirm his suspicion but the blue alicorn didn't respond. Deciding he may as well finish, he carefully bit her wing, pulling it out to extend it to its full length so he could work on it. The moment he grabbed for a feather though, she fluttered her wings, resting them back against her sides and leaving the changeling with the feeling of feathers in his nose.

"You know, this would be so much easier if you worked with me," he grumbled, settling closer to her right side and working on the wing as best he could. It wouldn't be nearly as good as the left, but with Luna sleeping comfortably he wasn't going to wake her.

Tug, align, move on. Tug, align, move on.

Tug, align, move on.

Tu-"Luna? Are you already in bed?"

"Gah!" Luna yelped, the sudden intrusion causing the changeling to jerk in surprise and yank one of her feathers.

"Dammit! I'm sorry Luna, she took me by surprise," he said, checking the wing to make sure there wasn't any bleeding. Turning to the white alicorn he scowled.

"Haven't you learned your lesson about barging into other people's rooms yet?"

Chuckling at the twin glares being directed at her, Celestia shook her head.

"No, we require many more incidents before we learn our lesson. Luna, it is time to end the day."

The blue mare grunted, slowly rising and stretching out before making her way to the balcony. They gathered their power and once more, Max found himself gaping a little. The power, it was just...wow.

"So, Luna," Celestia started when they were finished. Luna, mid turn to return to her bed, slowed and perked an ear.

"We have heard the strangest thing while walking through the corridors after dinner. Rumors of a duel, insults to nobility, something about a flock?"

'That's right, I wanted to ask Luna about that. Was she claiming me earlier?' the stallion thought to himself, watching the mares curiously.

"We, one of the nobles took offense at Maximus' words," Luna started, flicking her tail nervously. "She was bluffing and he called her on it. Already in trouble, Lady Fortune decided to demand blood for the insult. We told her that she would be unable to use our knights for matters of her own honor and that we would be his second, standing in his place in the duel. We were, angry and warned her against threatening our stallion and, yes we claimed him as our stallion. Publicly."

"So, a flock is-"

"We are speaking with our sister," Celestia cut him off, looking back to Luna.

The smaller mare was rubbing a foreleg with her alternate fetlock, blushing furiously. Looking back at him she smiled widely and looked back to her sister, standing taller.

"We will stand by our words. He has been nothing if not kind to us, more so than any pony we have spoken with before. He is..."

Max ducked into the bed as Luna gave a flap of her wings and soared to the bed, landing behind him and causing him to bounce with her impact. The next thing he knew, she was wrapping her legs around him with her wings splayed down either side.

"He is important to us. We will not allow anypony to take our happiness away."

Celestia sighed. Max could taste her irritation, but he could also taste something else. The barest hints of joy.

"Very well. It is your decision, Luna. I trust you shall be taking steps to limit the number of incidents he causes?"

"We will keep him from the nobility, lest he harm their fragile egos. At least until we can teach him of social ranking," the blue alicorn answered, snuggling into his neck.

Max scowled at the treatment. The second Celestia was out of the room...

"Very well. We will leave you to your rest. Good night, Luna."

"Good night, Tia," Luna called, waving as the taller alicorn left.

The second the door closed, he felt Luna begin to shift. She was likely preparing for some kind of lecture, but Max had questions that were going to be answered.

Bucking and throwing the mare off his back, he jumped on her back as she righted herself and pinned her to the bed.

Nearly growling at his earlier treatment, the stallion moved his muzzle to her ear.

"I need answers Luna. What's going on? What's a flock, why did you volunteer to be my stand-in in a duel, and most importantly, why are you pushing me around like some animal or pet?"

It came out a bit more forcefully than he intended, but he didn't like being confused. Not when everyone else seemed to know that was going on. Judging by the medley of emotions she was emitting, Luna was now just as confused as he was.

Taking a breath and stepping off of her back, he closed his eyes and tried to calm himself.

"I know now that I have to be careful around the nobles. I get that. But that ear thing, the comments about defending your stallion, that makes no sense to me. It sounds like reversed chivalry."

Opening his eyes and jumping from the bed he began pacing about the room, his wings buzzing in agitation. He felt...he felt like he was a prize the mare had claimed, like he was less than a man. A guy should stand for himself, right? That's what he was always taught.

The alicorn's emotions roiled as she watched him from the bed. Anger, sorrow, confusion, it was disgusting but he was too involved in his internal ranting to pay any heed.

"A, a mare is the head of the family. In instances where the stallion is threatened, the mare is expected to step in. This, should hold true whether the danger is to his health, wealth, or honor. Sapphire's demand for a duel was out of line, though she likely does not see you as a male.

"As for the flock, a flock is the pegasus family unit. It usually consists of the mare and stallion, though the number of mares and stallions can increase in time. Sometimes it is in the form of a son or daughter marrying, expanding the flock by blood connections. Other times, additional ponies may request to join the flock. Such joinings must be approved by the mare who, if another mare joins, would thenceforth be known as the alpha mare. It is, we were raised in a flock. We do not remember much, but we remember we had several mothers and fathers."

Sighing and letting her wings sag, she continued.

"'Tis another difference between Tia and ourself. She does not like the idea, having been raised in a traditional unicorn family. One mare, one stallion. There may be maids or serving ponies and those individuals may earn a place in the family, but for the most part they tend towards monogamy."

"And the, earth ponies? Do they have something different?" Max asked, processing the information.

"They often use flocks, though they call them herds. They run by the same standard as flocks, though from what we remember they are more likely to start with multiple individuals than Pegasi," she answered softly.

Max nodded before beginning his own explanations.

"Chivalry, otherwise referred to as the Knight's code, states the proper treatment of ladies by men in the Middle Ages. There have been calls of chivalry's death for years, that chivalry is dead, but my parents gave me the basics. Hold doors open for ladies, never strike a lady, never insult a lady you are unfamiliar with even if you are joking. Pull out her seat if she is your date or there is no one to do so for her, never make a lady pay for any part of a date you invited her on, there's more but that's all I can recall at the moment.

"I'm sure you can see the difference. Men are traditionally the head of the house, men have held positions of power, males made up the majority of the nobility, the ladies they married answering to them. That's what I am, Luna. A male raised in a patriarchal society. Things were certainly more easier at present back home than it was years ago, but a male getting pulled by his ear was either something observed for the laughs or a male who was submissive. A submissive male in a society that favored dominance and power. Heck I remember in one old society, the wife was expected to throw herself onto her husbands funeral pyre if he died before her. As for the human family, it was similar to unicorns. One male, one female. At least, that's what it's supposed to be. Emperors and kings could and did break the rules if they wanted to."

Turning to face her, he took another deep breath, blowing it out and trying to rid himself of his irritation.

"I know this is different. I know that our cultures are different, I get that. I promise to do my best to avoid causing you issues in the future. This duel thing, I, I want to thank you for that. I feel like you're cleaning up after me, and being raised as I was, I just...I can't stand it. I don't like owing someone so much, much less a mare that I've been trying to help. How am I supposed to help you if you're stuck spending time cleaning up after me?"

"We were...unaware that it was so different," Luna admitted, still trying to wrap her head around such a reversed set of roles. "We have heard griffon males are more aggressive, but it is only in the presence of other males. Hens still rule. It has always been mares who have led, always a princess leading the unicorn, pegasi, and earth pony tribes."

The mare's thoughtful expression morphed into something more lustful.

"We suppose it would explain your obsession with being on top."

"That, that was more of a challenge," Max said with a nervous chuckle. "You were pushing me around and it almost felt like you were taunting me. I felt like I needed to respond. So I did, I responded and uh, reversed the position. If you want to actually do something like that, I could. I mean, I wouldn't mind-"

"Shush," Luna said, smiling. "We may discuss who is the alpha of this flock later. Privately at least, the nobles may take it as a sign of weakness on our part if we allowed our stallion to lead. They may attempt to coerce you into joining their flock, thereby placing themselves over us. We will attempt to be aware of your differences but please understand that if we act as we did earlier, it is with the best of intentions."

Smiling even wider, she lit her horn and levitated a small vial, as well as several jars with stoppers over to the bed and set them on the floor.

"Now, we believe we should work on getting you properly supplied for your trip."

Max stared at the assorted containers, curious as to their purpose. The stoppered jars he assumed were for any extra love, but the small vial...

"Okay, the jars are for love, but what's the vial for? Venom?"

"Oh, that's already full," she answered, lifting it in her magic grip. "You said something about oil?"

The changeling's muzzle formed an 'oh' as her meaning came across.

"Uh, I think we should hold off on that."

When she pouted, he held up his hooves in a placating gesture.

"You just accepted a duel in my name, Luna. I know your curious and any other time I'd be willing to try these things with you, but I've gotta suggest against this. We don't know how this will work and if something goes wrong, I don't want you walking awkwardly when you go to the training yard tomorrow. Worst case, you'll be in pain during the duel and it will distract you."

The alicorn slumped, the changeling sensing her irritation as she nodded in agreement. He walked up to the bed and held her face between his hooves.

"Tell you what. Tonight we'll just sleep together. After the duel I'll preen your wings and then we'll do whatever catches your fancy."

Luna spiked with lust and joy at the promise, moving forward slightly to steal a kiss before standing and moving back on the bed. Finding a comfortable spot, she laid down and pulled over her blanket, raising a wing invitingly. Max accepted, moving onto the bed and awkwardly sliding under the wing and against her side. She pulled him closer with the wing, making certain she was comfortable before pulling the blanket over the two of them.

As an after thought, she grabbed a jar and popped the lid off.

"Our emotions flow even in our sleep, correct? You should begin to prepare your sustenance now."

Max rolled his eyes but grabbed the offered jar in his hooves. Focusing on the warmth from before, he centered it then pushed. The first push filled the jar about half way. Not wanting to push himself, he shook his head and Luna took it from him.

"You do not wish to store more?" she asked while setting the jar beside the bed, the emotion giving off a soft pink and white glow.

"I don't know how to quantify it," he explained, licking the excess gel off of his lips. "I don't know how much I need to survive, I don't know how long it will last me. It's different from eating food. Even just that made me hungry, but this hunger is different. It's not the "I haven't eaten since last night and it's now bed time, I have a headache from being too hungry" kind of thing. It's just a feeling of need. It's tough to explain. I'll add to the jar tomorrow when we get up.

Luna nodded in understanding, laying her head on his own and sighing with satisfaction. Max soon found himself relaxing as well, her breathing a steady rhythm that lulled him to sleep while both her body heat and love warmed him. Just because the world made no sense sometimes didn't mean he couldn't find comfort. She was right, of course. He had to trust the mare to know her own culture. The support had to be mutual.

Author's Notes:

So I don't know when it was added, but I just found it and now my new mission in Heroes of the Storm is to see every character's dance.

Oh, and you didn't think we saw the last of Fortune, did you?
