My Little Pony: Dinosaurs Are Magic
Chapter 2: Chapter Two: Queen of the Tyrant... Ponies?
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAuthor's Notes:
Please not that this new chapter is the introduction of both Venom and Rex, and the original introductory chapter for Venom is not going to be written.
It should also be noted that Venom is now female, her name being Azalea after a species of highly toxic flower.
-Ponyville-
The unicorn mare slowly began to stir, her head pounding in her ears as she dragged herself into a semi-stetting position. Forcing her eyes open, she instantly wished she hadn't when the bright sunlight momentarily blinded her. Lifting a limb up to shield her eyes from the light, Rexy noticed something very peculiar... Her arms were normally too short to do anything of the such, yet here she was, blocking the sun from her eyes with a hoof...
A hoof...
"What the hell?" she mouthed, looking down at her apparently newly formed body.
Her thought process was interrupted by an obnoxiously cheery voice. "Hello, there!" pink mare chirped as she approached.
Rexy nearly leapt out of her fur, instinct almost causing her to pull the newcomer's head off. "Good God!" she exclaimed, jumping up onto all fours before glaring down at the mare in question once her shock had faded. The tyrannosaur lifted a confused brow at the fact that her aggressor was not making any attempt to get away. The realization was a tad slow to dawn on her that the pink mare was also only slightly shorter than she was.
"Hello, again!" the pony quipped again, bouncing on the tips of her hooves with a wide grin.
Rexy took a step back, an odd sensation drawing her attention down at her body again. She looked down to see her front legs firmly planted on the ground like they'd been there her whole life, shaggy fetlocks and a pair of hooves replacing her claws and scales. Her face morphed into that of shock, eyes growing wide with fear and her jaw dropping slightly.
The pink horse pulled her head back slightly at the sight of sharp fangs poking out of the unicorn's jaw. "Your teeth are HUGE!" she beamed, her eyes popping out wide as she somehow stuck her head into the mare's open mouth. Her words echoed into Rexy's throat before the saurian pulled back with a snarl, slamming her jaws shut.
"All the better to eat you with," she grumbled with the faint remembrance of a story a pair of Jurassic World's visitors spoke of, furrowing her brows.
Fear crossed the pink mare's face as she took a brief step away from the heavily built unicorn.
Rexy noticed this and reacted. "Relax... I'm not going to eat you," she said, "right now," the former Tyrannosaurus rex then whispered to herself.
"Oh, okay!" the mare responded, bouncing back to a joyous attitude. "My name is Pinkie Pie," she giggled, breaking physics and landing on Rexy's back.
The unicorn mare jerked forward in surprise, Pinkie Pie tumbling off of her shoulders as she whirled around to face her with a growl. "DON'T... do that," she growled, momentarily stumbling as she tried to get used to the feeling of being a quadruped. Casting one last skeptical glance at Pinkie Pie, Rexy turned to walk away, yellow eyes wide and teeth clenched as the shock began to settle.
"It was nice to meet you!" she heard the mare call after her.
"The feeling is not mutual," Rexy quietly grumbled to herself in a mocking tone, hooves kicking up dust as she followed the dirt road. She took one last look down at her body, noticing the fact that scales were replaced by a coat of soft fur. Lifting a newly formed hoof, the unicorn pushed a lock of newly formed brown mane out of her face with a sigh, feeling the tip of a broken of horn jutting out of her forehead.
Your definitely not on Isla Nublar anymore, she thought to herself with a grimace, lifting her view to scan her surroundings for anybody who would possibly want to help a tremendously sized mare with a broken horn and sharp fangs jutting out of her jaw.
Her wishes were seemingly answered when a violet unicorn with a pair of wings approached her with a friendly smile, reminding Rexy that she was no longer capable of the intimidation she used to possess. "Hello," the newcomer waved as she advanced towards her.
"Mm," the unicorn acknowledged.
"Do you need any help, you looked a little lost?" the alicorn, as Rexy would soon know the species as, asked with concern audible on her voice.
"Uh... Yeah. First off, can you tell me why I'm a horse? Secondly, how do I understand you? And thirdly... why do you look like something that I used to eat back home?" Rexy questioned, recalling the hoofed mammal that she used to be fed in Jurassic World.
The mare pulled her head back slightly at the words, but responded nonetheless. "To answer your first question, if you just noticed that you're a unicorn, what form did you take when you were at home?" she asked, lifting a curious brow.
"While I was in Jurassic World, I could best be described as a dinosaur," Rexy replied.
Twilight Sparkle dimly recalled a period of Equestria's history called the Jurassic period. It was what the Jurassic Period had to do with where this tall mare came from that had her confused. The alicorn then noted the unicorn's description of what she used to look like. "Wait... Dinosaur?" she said.
Rexy nodded like it was obvious. "Yyyes, a dinosaur... T. rex to be exact."
"T. rex?! You mean like the Tyrannosaurus rex?! King of the lizards?" Twilight stammered. She then noticed that Rexy did look quite reptilian, possessing chest scales, dark brown stripes, and yellow eyes. Her cutie mark was bafflingly odd, resembling a flipped, bubble letter 'q', with a smaller red version inside of it.
"Why does that surprise you?" the unicorn growled.
"Tyrannosaurs went extinct around 70 million years ago," she acknowledged matter-of-factly. "I want to believe you, but the chances that you are normally an extinct animal, let alone the king-"
"Queen," Rexy corrected, rolling her eyes.
"Right, queen of the extinct animals is highly unlikely," Twilight finished.
"How do I need to prove this to you?" the unicorn queried with a scoff. "Are my teeth not proof enough?" With that, Rexy peeled back her lips to reveal rows of ivory daggers that curved back in her jaws.
"Not particularly," Twilight said, sitting on her haunches and crossing her hooves. "Lots of tyrannical beings here in Equestria have fangs," she continued with a scowl at the mare's attitude and lack of respect. "A DNA test is likely the most accurate way of determining your original species... If, that is, your Equestrian body hasn't changed the structure of your DNA too much."
"Maybe try speaking in a language that I can understand?"
-Zap Apple Orchards-
The changeling's brightly colored, membranous neck frill quivered slightly as she snoozed, acidic venom dripping from her exposed fangs. A pair of flaming orange crests with a black stripe each sat atop the skull, covered slightly by a short, disheveled mane. With a quiet snort, the Dilophosaurus stirred from her rest, eyes straining to focus upon the landscape with the early morning sun blazing in her eyes.
Being primarily nocturnal, Azalea lifted a hole filled appendage up to block the sun from her eyes, only for the bright light to shine through said holes and blind her momentarily before she stumbled to an upright position and turned away from the light. Blinking her eyes several times, the changeling Dilophosaurus shook her head to clear the brief wave of dizziness from her vision before noticing the fact that she couldn't feel the earth beneath her claws.
Azalea looked down to notice that she had no claws, in their place a horse's hoof filled with clean holes. The Dilophosaurus cocked a brow, lifting an appendage to study it closely. Curiosity was interrupted by a growl that seemed to ring in her ears, reminding Azalea of a current state of hunger.
Looking around for a possible food source, she scanned her surroundings for something in which to prey upon. Her eyes stopped before snapping over to a being she recognized in shape, but not in color. It was a pony, Azalea could tell that much. But the color was all wrong. Rather than a drab, camouflaging brown that she was used to seeing on prey, the heavily built stallion was a bright shade of red, his attention on a thick tree trunk.
Ducking behind a similarly sized tree, the former dinosaur, opened her jaws slightly, poison green and fiery orange frill quivering softly as she prepared to snap her head to shoot a spray of venom at the unknowing stallion.
Before any such thing could happen, Azalea felt a firm tap to the shoulder. Twirling around, an instinctually fired bullet of poisonous saliva whizzed by a mare's head before splatting against an apple tree. The Dilophosaurus let her neck hood swing out, shuddering as she uttered a rage-filled hiss.
The mare in question dodged her head aside, a glare crossing her face as the changeling stepped back to run with her cover having been blown out a metaphorical window.
"What the hay?" the pony scoffed before lurching forward and biting down on Azalea's frilled ear and pulling her back. As the changeling thrashed to try and escape the hold, the blonde-maned mare obliged, releasing her before snatching her hoof. "Stahp it," she scolded in a thick, country accent, taking off a cowmare hat and whapping Azalea's snout with a scowl.
Instantly, the former Dilophosaurus stopped struggling, rubbing her snout with a free hoof before letting her source of intimidation fold against her neck to give the appearance of a royal collar. But not without allowing for a soft, menacing growl to escape her throat.
"Calm yerself, I ain't gonna hurt ya," the earth pony assured the changeling before turning her head to the glob of saliva that had slowly begun to eat away at the bark of the apple tree it had struck merely moments ago. Releasing Azalea's hoof, she gazed over at the changeling with obvious confusion. "What is that..? And who are ya?"
"Who's asking?" the dilophosaur replied venomously, but without attacking or trying to escape.
"Th' name's AppleJack," the mare replied. "Now then, what is that, and who're ya?" AppleJack asked again.
"I am called Azalea," the changeling acknowledged, the anger in her voice slowly diminishing as she spoke. "What you see on that tree is my only defense."
AppleJack could clearly see the short fangs the gleamed in the sun as Azalea spoke, but could easily tell that the changeling wasn't lying. It was also in this moment that AppleJack got a good look at her. The changeling's skin, rather than composed of a green-grey exoskeletal armor, was a dark yellow, with thin black stripes running down her sides and flank. Her mane and tail, similar to the twin, 'V' shaped crests atop her head, was dark grey, almost black, that melded into a vibrant, blood red. Azalea's eyes were very striking, almost frightening, with a fiery orange iris that seemed to waver in the sunlight. The frill that had been a show of defense was now folded tightly against the changeling's neck, forming an almost choker-necklace-like appearance. If anything, Azalea, having eyelashes that stuck out against the yellow fur and a dark mane and tail, seemed to have an almost gothic appearance. Almost like she was a wannabe-rock star. Finally, AppleJack shook aside her curiosities and spoke. "But ya got a whole mouthful of teeth... And you're a changeling," she said, hoping for a bit more information from her.
"A... what?" Azalea queried, lifting a brow and squinting at AppleJack. "I have no idea what you're talking about. Last I checked, I was a Dilophosaurus... Not a... changeling," she said.
"Dilophosaurus," AppleJack repeated thoughtfully as Azalea contemplated making a meal out of her.
The mare must have sensed it, for she picked a large apple from a tree and tossed it to the changeling mare. Instinct fired off, and she snatched the apple from the air in her jaws, teeth sinking into the reflective red surface. "Huh," she said through a mouthful of fruit. "It's good."
"Obviously," AppleJack said with a smile. The Element of Honesty looked down at Azalea's hooves as she ate, noticing again, the holes that filled them with a sense of growing anxiety. "Yer... not the aggressive type, are ya?" she asked, a bead of sweat touching her brow as memories of a royal changeling flashed across her mind.
"Only when I'm hungry," the former Dilophosaurus replied before finishing off the last of the fruit with a growing smile. "Doesn't quite beat the taste of a fresh kill, but good nonetheless," she exclaimed with a content sigh, licking her lips with a forked tongue.
Noting that changelings only fed upon the love that others gave off, AppleJack spoke again. "Ya really aren't a changeling, are ya?"
"I told you... Dilophosaurus," Azalea said with an eye roll.
"Ah... Okay. Is that some kinda lizard er somethin?"
"Dinosaur..."
-Twilight Sparkle's Treehouse-
"Soooo, how is this gonna tell you if I am what I say I am?" Rexy asked Twilight Sparkle as a thin needle loomed over her right arm, the sight of the syringe causing brief flashes of memory to force themselves to the forefront of her mind. She couldn't really see what was happening, other than a primate in a white lab-coat approaching her with a needle aimed at her previously massive jaws. She could vaguely remember the brief, pricking pain in her gums as a clear fluid was injected into her bloodstream.
"If I test your blood, I can determine if you really are, in fact, a Tyrannosaurus. Doing so will also help me find out how you have managed to survive millions of years," Twilight replied, not letting her eyes stray away from the visible artery after she shaved away a small patch of Rexy's thin fur.
"Oka-OW!!" the unicorn blurted suddenly, jerking her arm as the tip of the syringe was forced through her skin. Twilight lost her hold on the needle with the jerk, the utensil simply sticking out of her forearm before the alicorn grabbed the mare and pulled her back down with a gasp.
"Hold still!" she commanded. "That could've gone so much worse than it just did," she explained, holding Rexy's arm down while bopping her snout with the tip of a hoof.
"How about a warning next time?!" Rexy barked back, throwing up her free hoof in despair as Twilight gently pulled the handle of the tool with a wave of magic. On cue, a deep crimson liquid filled the small compartment of the syringe. It didn't take Doctor Henry Wu for her to realize that the fluid was her own blood.
Twilight set the phial of blood into a plastic bag before covering the pinprick on the mare's arm with a small band-aid. "Okay, feel free to hang and relax for a while. I'll see what I can make of this," the alicorn explained with a soft smile.
"You got anything to eat?" Rexy asked her, the realization that she hadn't eaten for a couple days not eluding her.
"I've got some salad on the dining table," Twilight acknowledged, nodding in that direction.
"I'm a carnivore, remember?"
"Well, us ponies are herbivores."
"You're kidding right?" Rexy scoffed, holding back a jaw drop. She was in a world of colorful ponies that looked like they themselves could be a reliable food source... but they were all plant eaters. That meant she wouldn't find what she was looking for unless she caused mass hysteria by killing one of the natives. Considering her currently equine form, this could mean that she would be considered a cannibal and wouldn't be trusted by anybody.
"Noo, sorry," Twilight said with a nervous smile.
Rexy merely groaned, slumping back into the closest chair like it was something that she'd been able to do in her whole 21 years of existence.
"Twilight? Do we have any more jewels? I'm starving, right now," the unicorn heard a young, masculine voice ask. On cue, a small shape came thumping down the oaken stairs. Spike shared the same look of hunger that was on Rexy's face, his stomach barking and growling for food.
"Sure, Spike. They're on the table," Twilight Sparkle replied with a smile.
"All RIGHT!" the young drake grinned, running over to the table. "AAAH!" Twilight heard Spike shout at the top of his lungs before the sound of burning rubber seemed to fill the air in the building, a now panicked Spike skidding to a halt and clutching his adoptive sister's leg. "W-why is King S-Sombra's wife here?" he shuddered, eyes wide and pupils constricted to pin pricks.
"King Sombra's wife?" Twilight repeated, furrowing a brow before the realization dawned on her. "OH, you mean Rexy? She's not King Sombra's wife, but she certainly isn't from around here," the alicorn chuckled, patting the little dragon on the head.
"Where is she from?" Spike asked, nervously looking up at her with fearful eyes.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out now," Twilight obliged, wrapping her magic around the sample of blood and closed her eyes. By doing this, she could tap into the memories of the one that the blood belonged to, also finding out in the process who the being was and what they were capable of. Her horn hummed and sparkled, the same aura surrounding the syringe before brief images of thundering storms and horrific bloodshed plagued her vision. She could see the deaths of those caused by Rexy's wrath during a hurricane, and in turn heard their pained screams as they were devoured alive.
Twilight let the magic diminish, opening her eyes to a watery veil. She was housing a murderous dinosaur masquerading as a large, irritable unicorn. "Rexy," she called to her guest, wiping the tears from her eyes.
On cue, the Tyrannosaurus walked into the room, a brow cocked asymmetrically.
"Why did you kill them?" the alicorn asked, turning to face the mare.
Shock was visible across Rexy's face at the words, her hoof fall dying as she came to a sudden halt. Her ears swiveled in brief confusion before falling flat at the faint memories from about twenty years ago. She shifted her view down and gazed blankly at the floorboards. "It was instinct... I told you already... I'm a Tyrannosaurus," the unicorn finally replied.
"I can see that now... Princess Celestia will wan't to meet you," Twilight said, fear of the unknown mentally kicking her instincts into overdrive. She trusted Rexy now, as much as she did Queen Chrysalis at the flashbacks from that stormy night.
"Princess Celestia?" the unicorn queried before a brief wave of magic washed over her and Twilight's form.
"Spike, can you hold down the fort while I'm gone?" the alicorn asked the purple and green drake.
Spike swung a clawed hand to his brow in the form of a salute, puffing out his chest slightly. "You can count on me!" he replied in a militaristic voice as the two mares disappeared with a flash.
-Outskirts of Ponyville-
Bastidon woke slowly, a noisy yawn escaping his jaws as he slowly opened his brown eyes. Dragging himself up to a sitting position on the couch, the Kirin was careful to avoid knocking down an expensive looking lamp with his clubbed tail. The bright sun filtered through the closed curtains, dimming the light to his eyes.
"Mornin'," he heard a voice exclaim.
Swiveling his head, Bastidon spotted Scarlet Blitz, Onyx, and a younger pegasus sitting at the dining table, forking eggs and pancakes from their plates. "Mm?" he groaned groggily, squinting before yawning again.
"There's a plate here with your name on it," Onyx told Bastidon with a chuckle, nodding at a plate and chair across from him.
"Thanks," the Kirin stallion mumbled, rising to his hooves and shuffling over to the table. Thinking their sitting down best to copy, Bastidon took a seat with another yawn, wincing slightly at the act that formed along his spine. "Jeez, I feel like I was hit by a gyrosphere," he groaned, craning his back with a pop to loosen his stiff spine.
"What's a gyrosphere?" the younger pegasus asked through a mouthful of egg.
Scarlet shot him a glare and motioned towards her mouth as an indicator of talking with one's mouth full. Her son grimaced and finished his mouthful.
"A gyrosphere is a sort of ball thing that you drive around," Bastidon answered before taking his fork and stabbing a bit of egg.
"Interesting," Onyx said thoughtfully as the Kirin to a bite of egg. "Anywho, this is Obsidian, my son. You two haven't been formally introduced. Obsidian, this is Bastidon," the mechanic said before stopping the last of his eggs onto his fork and finishing the remnants.
Bastidon and Obsidian shared a nod before Onyx rose from the table. "Welp, I suppose we should get you to Celestia. She'll be curious about what happened last night," he said, rinsing off his plate before gingerly putting it into the dishwasher.
Obsidian's ears perked to attention. "Can I come? Doug might be there!" he quipped with a smile before practically inhaling what remained of his breakfast and jumping from the table.
"Don't you have homework to do?" Scarlet Blitz asked, lifting a brow..
The red and dusty brown pegasus groaned, throwing back his head and letting his wings droop. "C'mon, it's a Saturday!" he grumbled, nonchalantly putting his dishes into the washer beside his father's.
"No. You're a Senior and failing three classes already. Do you want to graduate with your class, or not?" the mare said, relishing what remained of her own food.
Onyx looked over before sticking in his opinion. "Obsidian hasn't seen Doug for years, he can come over just for today, right? It wouldn't kill him to hold off on homework until we get back," the stallion said, leaning down and kissing Scarlet's cheek in a classic example of how he turns her to his side.
With a sigh, the pegasus acknowledged. "Fine," she smiled, rolling her eyes and feigning a glare.
"YUS!" Obsidian cheered, throwing a hoof up with a laugh.
"Then let's head out."
Bastidon rose from his seat and followed the two stallions out the door. "Good luck, Bastidon," she heard Scarlet Blitz call after him as he left the building.
