Spectrobes: Darkness

by Just Some Guy

Chapter 1: [Chapter 1]: Crash Landing

For as long as time has existed, life had thrived in hundreds upon thousands of worlds in the vast expanse of space that is the universe. For as long as time has existed, darkness and light had always clashed for dominance. In the beginning, there was only darkness. But then, a cataclysmic eruption of light occurred. To many and most, it was the catalyst of life, but to one species in particular, it was the downfall of time and space. With the eruption of light came the creation of personified darkness: the Krawl. They were a plague upon the universe, and like all viruses, they needed to feast. And feast they did. Hundreds upon thousands of planets met their end to the Krawl, and this continued for eons upon eons.

At the same time of their creation, a glimmer of hope spawned in the dread of darkness. In the midst of darkness arose a flicker of light; living weapons, known as Spectrobes, designed to combat the Krawl created by the light itself. But none could harness this unimaginable power. And so, the weapons were never used. Thus the universe succumbed to the darkness of the Krawl plague.

But one thousand years ago, a single soul had once again attempted to use the Spectrobes, and to their surprise, they succeeded, summoning the legendary beasts from the days of old. Using their new-found power, they struck down Krawl after Krawl, only to have the plague multiply faster than they could be defeated. With haste, the soul created machines capable of controlling the beings of light and defeating the creatures of darkness. With these machines, they had created an entire army of people known as Spectrobe Masters, who could command the Spectrobes to do their bidding. Years past, and while the original Spectrobe Master had passed, the Krawl plague had soon begun to diminish.

It was then when a Spectrobe Master obsessed with defeating the Krawl attempted a dangerous experiment that corrupted his mind and, ironically, turned him into one of them. With his new power, he commanded the legions of Krawl and utterly annihilated the remaining Spectrobe Masters, clearing the path for the Krawl to feed without any obstacle in their way. But the Spectrobe-Master-turned-Krawl's plans were soon to be foiled by two heroes. With their combined strength, they defeated the leader of the plague and completely wiped out the Krawl species, finally bringing peace to universe.

One hundred years have passed since the extinction of the Krawl. Peace reigned supreme in the galaxy with no threats of universal destruction. But as the old saying goes, darkness cannot live without light...

...just as light cannot live without darkness.

It must have been hours that Twilight had been at the Canterlot museum, curiously looking at the brown stone statue on a stand for all to see. Her lavender body and long purple mane had begun glistening with sweat, her horn felt like it was melting, and her wings drooped down a bit from doing nothing for so long. But her purple eyes stared intently at the statue, trying to figure out just what it was, and more importantly, why it faintly glowed a white light.

A few hours ago, a construction team found a strange statue about a foot tall that looked very wolf-like, with long droopy ears and big eyes. It rested upon a five pronged seat in fetal position. Most notably, it gave off a faint glow that was very easy to see in the dark. Construction halted when the statue was discovered, and until things were sorted if the team was digging over some ancient ruins or not, that's how it'll be.

"Of all the things I've seen in Equestria, this has gotta be the weirdest..." she said to herself as she analyzed the statue "Obviously, if its glowing in Equestria, it has to be important. But why?"

"Um... Twilight?" a familiar voice to the lavender mare spoke behind her, causing her to turn around and see her cyan Pegasus friend Rainbow Dash with her rainbow mane and tail, along with her cerise eyes "You've been looking at that thing for a while now... You feeling okay?"

"Rainbow Dash, darling," a white Unicorn mare with a curly purple mane and tail and bright blue eyes spoke in a very ladylike voice "if Twilight wishes to stare at a statue to try and figure out why it is glowing, then let her. Even if it looks terribly... unhealthy for the poor thing..."

"Hey, maybe it's fun!" a pink normal mare with a poofy darker pink mane and tail and sky blue eyes bounced up and down before skipping merrily over to statue and making odd noises in rhythm to the soft glow "OOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOoooooo!!!"

"Pinkie, let's not have a repeat o' the time ah thought ah could buck all the apples durin' apple buck season" the orange normal mare of the group with a tied up blonde mane and tail as well as green eyes said in her country accent.

"Well, Twilight, um..." softly spoke a cream yellow Pegasus mare with a long pink mane and tail with very soft curls, along with teal eyes "...maybe you should, um, take a break for a moment... If you want to, of course."

"...well, maybe you're right, Fluttershy..." Twilight sighed before giving a lighthearted smile "I think I've looked at this thing enough for today... Now I have to document my findings!"

Twilight's friends all gave out a collective groan.

"Well darling, if that's what you need to do, then we won't stop you" the white Unicorn sighed "You ARE a princess after all. Well, we'll be at the Canterlot salon if you need us. Come along, Pinkie Pie."

"Oh boy!" Pinkie Pie bounced away from the statue and followed her friends out the door of the museum. However, Rainbow Dash stayed behind.

"Yeah, no" she scoffed whilst hovering above the ground "I'd rather stay here with Twilight and do egghead stuff than go out and do girly salon stuff."

"Oh boy!" Twilight squee'd "You can help me organize the documentary papers and then go through the library and see if there was anything recorded about the statue in the past. Then later, we can continue watching the statue to see if the pattern or brightness of its glowing light has changed! Finally, we can-"

"O-On second though, I'll just do a few laps around Canterlot Castle..." Rainbow chuckled nervously before she bolted towards the museum door "See ya later, Twi!"

"Oh... Well, see you later then!" Twilight waved her friend goodbye. After she left, the lavender pony began feeling slightly disappointed not one of her friends stayed to help her. It was then when a small purple dragon-like being with rounded green spikes on his back ran to his technical sister's side.

"Don't worry, Twilight!" he said triumphantly "I'm still here to help you in anyway I can!"

"Thanks, Spike" Twilight smiled and rubbed her number one assistant on the head before turning back to the statue "But I'm dead serious; that statue is beyond logic. What could be making that glow? I thought only crystals could do that, not normal old stones. Perhaps there's some sort of glowing crystal in the center, but that's even more unbelievable because of the thickness of normal rock."

"What if its a living creature?" Spike suggested.

"Oh Spike, don't be ridiculous" Twilight giggled a bit "Even if this was some kind of fossil, and a darn well-preserved one at that, I highly doubt that something could live fossilization."

"I dunno, Twilight..." Spike shrugged "We've seen weirder."

"Weird, yes" Twilight recalled "But at the very least, our friend Discord makes some sense with his actions. A glowing piece of dull rock? That's just plain illogical."

"Says the mare defending the guy that literally drinks glass instead of the milk in it..." Spike pouted.

"I said SOME sense!" Twilight snapped, but quickly calmed down "And besides, he's the spirit of chaos. He can basically do whatever he wanted to and that's okay. This is just a normal rock."

"Clearly not if its glowing like that" Spike commented "Anyway, do you want me to sort through anything?"

"Hmm? Oh, yeah. There are some papers on that exhibit over there that I left there for convenience" Twilight nodded at some papers on a a glass case "Could you sort through them? They're my documentary notes, and they're kinda important for something like this."

(Music Stop)

"Right away, ma'am!" Spike saluted before going and doing as instructed. Twilight simply stared at the statue with pure curiosity in her eyes. Its hypnotic glow fascinated her to no end. Was it a relic of ancient days, or some sort of alien artifact just about ready to destroy the world? She did not know. But she knew exactly what this called for.

"Spike, get the papers and sort them later" she nodded "We're headed for the library!"

The moment Twilight entered the library, she immediately went for the lore section and pulled out as many books as she could about the history of Equestria with her magic. Sitting at the closest table and placing her stack of books next to her, she pulled off the first book, opened it up and began reading.

Minutes turned to hours for her unfortunately as she speed read through each and every book on Equestrian history, trying to find at least one link between the past and the statue. Finally, after reading for so long, her head began to droop and eventually fell flat on the book she was currently reading. With Spike invested in another aisle, most likely the comic section, Twilight had stayed that way for quite a while.

"I thought I'd never see the day..." a regal voice said behind the lavender mare, waking her up "Princess Twilight Sparkle, sound asleep from reading a book. Must have been a very uninteresting book if even you succumbed to slumber."

"P-Princess Celestia?" Twilight looked around her and saw a tall white Alicorn mare with a literally flowing pink, blue and green mane and tail. Her violet eyes showed supreme authority, while also a certain motherly kindness.

"Sorry to disturb you, Twilight" Celestia giggled a bit "I was here to do a bit of reading myself and I saw you and thought a nice conversation would lighten things up, but I see you are 'clearly' invested a book, so if you wish for me to leave-"

"Oh, n-no! Sorry, you can stay" Twilight slightly panicked, calming down soon after "And about this, um... Look, you remember the statue we got from the construction team?" the solar princess nodded "Well, I've been trying all day to understand it. I've thought maybe it was some sort of relic, or a spiritual object in rituals of the old days. Heck, even Spike said it could be some sort of fossil, which it totally in the realm of responsibilities. But one thing eludes me: how could a normal rock or even a fossil glow like that? It's totally impossible."

"Well, Discord does what he does, correct?" Celestia wondered.

"Funny you should mention that; I spoke to Spike about that earlier" Twilight chuckled "But in all seriousness, that stone defies all logic and possibility. Why is is glowing, and for what purpose?"

"Well, if I may speak in the place of your friend Pinkie Pie for a moment," Celestia began "perhaps this whole thing will be solved by some sort of deus ex machina later on in the story?"

"Princess, you make just as little sense as Pinkie" Twilight sighed before going back to her book "Well, anyway, I gotta find out if anything about that statue was recorded in the past. It was great talking with you, Princess Celestia."

"Anytime, Princess Twilight" Celestia nodded and began walking away to read whatever she so pleased. The lavender mare groaned and slammed her head into the book, knocking on the desk and reverberating a loud sound through the entire library.

"SHHHHHH!!!" the ponies of the library shushed her immediately.

"Sorry..." Twilight spoke, her face still flat on her book.

"Hey, Twilight!" Spike had finished with his comic book reading session "Did you find what you were looking for?"

"No..." the mare groaned again.

"Oh... Sorry to hear that, Twi" the dragon disappointingly spoke before slightly cheering up again "Why don't you sleep on it and see if that silly statue has changed at all?"

"...maybe you're right" Twilight yawned "It's getting pretty late, and I've done nothing productive all day... I'm just so... *yawn* ...curious about that statue..."

"C'mon, sleepy head..." Spike rolled his eyes and began carrying his friend over his head with his hands.

Twilight and her friends took the next train back to Ponyville. The moment the train arrived back home, Twilight just about collapsed from exhaustion, forcing Spike to once again carry her back to their giant crystal castle. There, he finally put the lavender Alicorn to bed and allowed her to rest for the next day, which would more than likely involve staring at the statue for hours on end again. He simply rolled his eyes at that thought. After exiting the princess's room, he too went to go to sleep.

The stars shone brightly in the night. A peaceful breeze flowed through the land and softly allowed everyone to fall fast asleep. But one star in particular shone the brightest. Slowly, it got brighter and brighter, as if it was falling towards Equestria. Only it WAS falling towards Equestria, quite rapidly at that. The giant fireball aimed straight for Ponyville.

A gigantic crashing noise resonated throughout the entire town, waking everyone up, including Twilight. Her eyes shot open immediately as she hopped out of her bed and rushed out to her room's balcony. The first thing that caught her eye was the cloud of smoke coming from a few blocks down the street leading up to her castle. Blinking, she spread her wings and immediately flew towards the smoke.

As soon as she arrived at the scene, she took note of the obvious: a straight cleared path down the road with no civilian or housing casualties, the dark smoke obscuring the object that fell from the sky, and white debris.

"What in the name of Celestia?" she questioned to herself.

"Stand aside, your highness" two white ponies with golden armour and a blue mane and tail sticking out of said armour spoke with voices that proclaimed their authority as guards "Anything could appear at any moment! We wish to protect you to-"

"That's quite alright, gentlecolts" Twilight politely moved the guards out of the way and cast an oxygen spell on herself, making purple bubble appear around her head "I've faced a hydra, a manticore, a demon from Tartarus and the spirit of chaos himself. I think I can survive a little meteor crash."

"O-Of course, your highness" the guards bowed and allowed their ruler to pass into the smoke.

It was difficult to see inside the cloud of black smoke. Slowly but surely, Twilight made her way around until bumping into a white piece of metal with a long black line down the middle, as well as a small line of very light blue traveling down the line. She looked up to see the piece of metal was connected to a much larger body, much like the hull of a ship. But what intrigued her the most was that the piece of metal she bumped into seemed to be a rectangular hatch of some sort.

"Is this... a spaceship?" she wondered "Great. On top of an ancient glowing statue, now I have aliens to deal with. Wonderful! Just my luck! Ugh... Well, might as well see if this darn thing will-"

Her sentence was interrupted when a clang was heard from within the supposed spaceship. Steam began pouring from the square hatch, which, to her surprise, began removing all the black smoke from the premises. Soon enough, the smoke cleared and revealed a cylinder shaped, white, house-sized ship with yellow oval things on the side with blue energy coming out of the black hole on the bottom of each one, yellow tail fins and more black lines with blue lights going all across the hull.

Soon enough, the hatch opened up and placed itself on the ground, allowing two figures to walk out of the structure. Each walked on two legs and had five digits on each leg they weren't using to move.

One was an semi-elderly male with beige skin a long fading red mane already with grey in it, as well as a thick, busy red and grey beard. He wore a baggy, light grey suit with darker grey armour on his shoulders and waist. Wrapped around his front "legs" was blue bandage, and on his walking legs he wore dark grey boots. His blue eyes were aged but looked sturdy and passionate.

The other was a teenaged female with slightly darker skin and a long black mane tied into a pony tail. She wore a light blue shirt that became a short dress down to her waist, as well as a white, short-sleeved midriff jacket and a white belt with multiple white pouches on her waist. Her pants were long, black and skin-tight, leading up to her white boots. On left unused leg was a white, hexagonal object with black lines and light blue lights on it as well. Her eyes were green and still very curious about the world.

"Uncle?" the younger one questioned the old man "Are those... the Spectrobes?"

"No intense light is radiating off of them..." the old man raised his arm up and pressed a few buttons on a control panel with his leg digits "These creatures are not Spectrobes. How peculiar... I could have sworn the natural radiation of Spectrobes was near this area..."

"Uh... What?" Twilight stared in awe of the creatures before her. As soon as she spoke, the creatures jumped back a bit as if they were startled by her speaking. Naturally, this confused her.

"Uncle, did that thing just talk?" the young girl asked her uncle.

"It would appear they are more sentient beings that I had originally thought" the old man nodded "They appear to share the universal language as well. We should cease calling them things" he looked right at Twilight with a serious look on his face "You there! Apologies for our destructive meeting. Our ship here had a minor... blip in the system, so to speak. I hope those police figures over there are not incompetent enough to understand this."

"Uncle! Don't be rude!" the younger girl scolded him before politely turning to Twilight and walking towards her "Sorry about him. He's a little stuck-up sometimes... Anyway, we must seem like total aliens to you, but I can assure you and those guards over there that we mean no harm-"

"Step away, creature!" one of the Unicorn guards came forth and stopped the girl from continuing any further, holding out a spear with his magic.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Twilight tried to resolved the situation as quickly as possible "No need for that! I'm sure they're just as confused as we are."

"Your highness, you have no idea what these creatures are capable of" the guard responded "They could be deceiving us and awaiting for the perfect time to strike us down!"

"You guards are always so over-protective..." Twilight rolled her eyes and removed the spear from in front of the young girl "Well then, it's not every day I get to meet aliens. Welcome to Equestria!"

"A pleasure!" the young girl shook Twilight's hoof before becoming slightly more serious "Anyway, down to business, I guess. My uncle and I were traveling around a few... uh... never mind that part. Look, we found a signal that suggests a Spectrobe might be here. Have you seen it?"

"A Spectrobe?" Twilight wondered "What's that?"

"You either don't know or haven't found it yet..." the girl sighed "Look, have you seen a brown statue thing around here? We're wondering if we could borrow it and research it for a tick."

"Wait, you mean you can solve the statue's mystery?!" Twilight ecstatically beamed.

"Wait, that means you already have it?!" the girl gasped before her face grew a huge smile.

"Finally, I can take it easy!" they both said at the same time, holding each other front appendages and bouncing around like schoolgirls. After a while, the old man stepped in to stop their antics.

"Enough, you two" he crossly said before looking directly in the eyes of Twilight with a cold stare "You. Is there any possible way for you to get the fossilized Spectrobe to us immediately?"

"So it was a fossil..." Twilight said to herself before looking back at the man "Yes, of course! Guard, hand me a quill and some paper. I need to write a note to Princess Celestia."

A guard obliged immediately and gave his ruler her requested items. Without question, Twilight began her letter to her mentor.

Dear Princess Celestia,

Surely you must have heard the loud noise from outside your window. You won't believe it, but aliens and their ship have crashed in Ponyville! It may seem farfetched, sure, but let me just tell you that they may know the secret to the statue! If you could, may you please send it to Ponyville? It would greatly be appreciated.

- Signed, your former student, Princess Twilight Sparkle

With a special spell she used only when Spike wasn't around, she whisked the letter away to the co-ruler of the land. She patiently tapped her front left hoof as she awaited a response. Unsurprisingly, the answer came a few seconds after the message had been sent in the form of a box with a small note attached to it.

"Princess Twilight..." she read the note aloud "Inside this box is the statue. I apologize I cannot be there to witness these aliens, as I am extraordinarily tired. However, I hope you and these supposed aliens solve the mystery. Sincerely, Princess Celestia."

"She seems nice" the young girl smiled before hastily going to open the box. Before Twilight said something to try and slow her down, she had already taken the fossil out of the box. However, the girl's smile quickly turned into an expression of fear.

"What? What?" Twilight hastily wondered "Is something okay?"

"Uncle... This fossil is glowing..." the girl shakily spoke.

"Then that can only mean one thing..." the old man scratched his chin "I thought my father dealt with them long ago, but it seems they have finally regrouped."

"What are you guys talking about?" Twilight worryingly "You're kinda leaving out of the conversation here."

"Oh, well..." the girl began "...ever heard of something called the Krawl?"

Author's Notes:

Welcome to my newest story about a over-praised franchise and an under-praised franchise colliding together. I'm sure you're smart enough to figure out which one's which. Spectrobes was always that one series you never knew about but was secretly the best thing you've ever seen, and to this day, I've only seen ONE other story about it, which surprises me because Spectrobes is less known than Bravely Default, and currently I'm the only one who has a story on the latter. I digress!

I'm sorry about the short music loops on this story. I'm currently trying to persuade the uploader, VGManiac456, to extend the tracks, so please stay tuned. Thank you!

Like most of my stories, let's go for a goal! Because of the low popularity of the franchise, I'm going to go for 40 Likes instead of the usual 60 or 70. If the goal is met, I will make a bonus chapter (MH's is coming soon, BTW).

Be sure to Like, Comment, Favourite and Follow, and until then, dream on guys!
