Chapter 53: Act III, Chapter 6: Achilles Ridge

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The temporary camp that the Ryders came up with in the short time they waited appeared to be just that.

Most of the shacks had wheels attached to them, and heavy machine guns were strapped onto each one, some even with rocket launchers.

Achilles Ridge looked more like the Midwest than anything else, sweeping valleys with the occasional Beowolf that they had to put down. In essence, the place looked like a rusty diesel-punk version of the Kahn Militia base in the California-Nevada border.

"I really f**kin' hope you have a reason for stopping a $50 Billion operation." Mako groaned.

"So do I, Mako." Alex groaned.

"Well, at least it isn't just us." The 20-something year old C.I.A agent waved a hand around.

"True. True."

"So, I have to ask. Why did you think this was a good idea?" Mako turned to face him.

"Let's face it, who's half-cocked idea was it to appoint a traumatized 15-year old kid as the Admiral of a multi-dimensional fleet?" He retorted.

"Touché." She shrugged.

"Touché, indeed."

"Alex, We'll be seeing you and the others now." One of the Ryders told him as he walked past.

The Ryders were cybernetic super-soldiers, usually they had a mechanical arm or leg, but some were wearing layered armor similar in design to the Samurai. Their helmets looked similar to some of the Goliath or Scarab models, at the outermost layer were thick, black capes or scarfs that drifted in the wind on occasion.

The Ryder led him into the largest mobile-base, where Ruby, Vanoss, and Twilight were seated, in front of them another Adenien. He sat down next to Vanoss and Twilight.

"Welcome, Alexander. Let's begin by introducing ourselves, shall we?" The Ryder greeted with a colder demeanor than even Ozpin's. His voice reminded him very faintly of the bus driver's from Tranzit. God, that map sucked.

"Hello, My name is Princess Twilight Sparkle, former student of Princess Celestia and the Princess of friendship." Twilight was the first to introduce herself.

"What's up, My name's Evan Fong, but you can just call me Vanoss." The owl-masked Canadian cleared his throat before moving along.

"I'm... Er..." Ruby stammered.

"Not to worry, miss. Just say your name and, if you'd like, occupation." He waved a mechanical hand.

"O-Okay, My name is Ruby Rose, and I'm a Huntress-in-Training at Beacon Academy in Vale." She nervously stammered.

Alex himself knew social awkwardness painfully well.

"My name's Alex Walker, Admiral of the Equestrian-Remnantian Coalition and Ex-Private of the Kahn Milita." Alex stated evenly.

"Wonderful to meet you all, my name is Kaiver Locust, Commander of the Adenian Ryders." He replied.

"Nice meeting you, Commander Locust. Now can you tell us why I shouldn't be rethinking my decision about stopping here?" Alex asked, in mock politeness. He himself wanted answers.

"Ahem. I invited you all here so I could answer some burning questions. What are the Inquisitors? What is their plan? And why is he, a traumatized 15 year old kid, standing before me now, leading the boldest band of heroes since the Great Battle of Year 13842436816?"

"Wha-?" Twilight and Vanoss instantly gaped.

"In terms of your human years, it's 2005 Anno Domini." Locust elaborated.

"Uh..." Vanoss scratched his owl mask.

"2005," Alex sighed, "he's talking about 2005 A.D."

"What happened?" Ruby asked.

"The Inheritors were conglomeration of Warriors from other universes, in 1899 they formed the Inquisitors, designed to hunt down traces of an older enemy, but this plan backfired." Locust explained.

"Older enemy?" Twilight asked.

"I'll explain the Chronicai later, The Inquisitors turned on their masters in 1962 and purged them, slaying many, forcing some to exile, and only the strongest survived."

"That's terrible!" Ruby gasped.

"The Inheritors desperately searched for a solution, they turned to the Oracle. The Oracle prophesied that four great heroes would lead an army and force the inquisitors to their end. One from Earth, another from Equestria, Remnant, and Adenien itself. In 1999, they recruited four of the best warriors from each in an attempt to stop them. This finally went into action in 2005. However, two of them were slain in the line of battle, the last two were forced into hiding, waiting until they were extinguished many years later.

"The remaining inheritors realized, these were not the prophesied ones, but their ancestors. Twilight Sparkle, Niece of Flickering Light of Equestria. Ruby Rose, daughter of Summer Rose of Remnant. Evan Fong, great nephew four-times-removed of Cyrus Fong of Earth. And, lastly-"

"Hold the phone, Locust! Are you saying I'm an Adenienite?!"

"I'm afraid so, Alexander Walker, son of Jason Walker of Adenien." Locust confirmed.

"How-" Alex wondered.

"-Are you able to produce an Aura? Everything that possesses a soul has Aura, but the ritual did little else but awaken your potential. It is a mixture of an activated Aura, as well as similar ability shared by some Adenianite bloodlines, the ability to manipulate electric fields. It is how we can use our prosthetics." Locust explained.

"If that's remotely true, then why-?"

"-Do you possess abilities similar to Aura. You have only scratched the surface, as they have. And plus, you are special."

"How?" Alex asked, growing more and more infuriated by the minute.

"Your father's bloodline, The Emphas Clan trained extensively in use of Electro-Wavelength Manipulation, your mother's was the Sirant Clan, who were adept at similar abilities utilizing their very soul. Those abilities are present in your blood. Princess Celestia knew this right away. It is why she has given you the Prometheus Charge." Locust explained.

"The Prometheus Charge?! But archaeologists have been searching for that for centuries!" Twilight gasped.

"You know of this device, hm? Kindly explain, Equestrian." Locust waved to her.

"The Prometheus Charge was said to be able to boost a pony's abilities to their absolute limit. Unicorns could lift entire continents! Pegasi could clear skies in less than a second!" Twilight babbled.

"If I were to use it, would I be able to run laps across the world?" Ruby asked.

"Not necessarily, Ms. Rose. Instead, what would most likely happen is that you become the physical manifestation of your soul, which is what allows you to run so fast, I assume." Locust explained.

"Go on." Alex demanded.

"The Inquisitors are trying to gather such items, make themselves the immortal rulers of the universe, and 'immanentize the eschaton', or bring about the end. However, they will be unable to do so without first killing you all. This is where the prophecy comes in. When Alexander killed Winchester, the Inquisitors realized who they would be up against. They have tried to kill you all, while form their own army to counter your own; The Scarlet Army of the Inquisitors." Locust disclosed.

"The Red Star." Vanoss concluded.

"Correct, Earthling. According to prophecy, the deciding battle will transpire at Kalos Prime, Capital of the Inquisitors' domain, in a cataclysmic battle known as 'Götterdämmerung', 'Armageddon', 'Kerivan', 'Ragnarök'."

"Wasn't it Kazi'ivan, though?" Ruby asked.

"You severely mistranslated, huntress. You said 'cookie' in ancient Valian." Locust corrected.

"Aw..." Ruby pouted.

Vanoss couldn't help but start laughing a bit.

"But, the true name of this battle, the real term the Inquisitors used to describe this conflict, is called the 'Blood Red Night'.

"That would almost sound badass if it didn't include the idea of us dying horrible deaths." Vanoss shuddered.

"The basic idea is that, thousands of universes will come together, hundreds with you, and hundreds with the Inquisitors-"

"What?! With that much power in one place.." Twilight stammered.

"Yes, I'm afraid a great deal of men will fight to their last breath. We will all lose heroes that night. The streets will run red with the stolen lives of great heroes. Thousands of kilometers around Kalos Prime will be nothing but dust and ash." Locust described.

"Wouldn't it destroy the planet?" Alex asked.

"Their planet is massive, and as old as time itself. It will remain in one piece at the very minimum." Locust described.

"Why would anyone work with the Inquisitors?" Twilight asked.

"Some out of the pure evil in their souls, some because they're afraid, many because it's what they've been preparing for for the past 50 years." Locust justified.

"W-Will we survive?" Ruby asked.

"One of you will survive at the absolute worst. But the outcome of the battle is uncertain." Locust sighed heavily.

"That means... Kat...Mako.." Alex gaped.

"And...Yang.." Ruby gasped

"My friends..." Twilight was starting to tear up a bit.

"Now you understand the full burden of war. Friends and kinsmen are mercilessly slain. Innocence lost." Locust mournfully shuddered.

"How do I have to do to end it?" Alex finally asked.

"You?!" Vanoss asked, awestruck.

"To end the Blood Red Night, you must face the Alpha Inquisitor in battle, and kill him. I advise doing this quickly, for time will be of the essence." Locust explained.

"I'll kill the bastard myself." Alex seethed.

"Are you insane?!" Twilight yelled.

"You can't fight him alone!" Ruby grasped his shoulders.

"If it's to keep you all safe, then I'll be damned if I'm not able to protect you all." Alex asserted.

"I don't know, you can't even handle Sigma without nearly dying!" Vanoss retorted.

"I have to at least try if it's to save everyone I care about!" Alex yelled.

"How dangerous is the Alpha?" Twilight asked.

"The most destructive in the known multiverse. He has been known to kill thousands of people at the wave of a hand." Locust answered.

"No! I won't let you!" Ruby grasped him tighter.

"Do you think I want to die?! Do you all honestly think that I'm such a lost cause that I would throw everything I have left in vain?!" Alex asked, bewildered.

"It's not that I think I do... It's... I don't want to lose you.." Ruby trembled.

"We're all scared shitless here! But I don't just charge into a hockey game without thinking! I strategize, I plan, I at least get help when I need it!" Vanoss yelled.

"I know you know we're all in this together. At least acknowledge that." Twilight scolded, tears in her eyes.

"What do you expect me to do?! If I go down, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I take you all with me!" Alex spat, rage over his true heritage, and the almost-certain fate that befell them all.

His friends looked at him as though he had grown a second head on top of the first.

"I know you're all scared as shitless as I am. I know for a fact that I'm not the best fighter, or have the best aim, and I'm hardly huntsman material. All I've got is the ship and It's crew. Everything else was handed to me out of pity. I've lost count of how many times you all scrambled to save my ass. It's high time that, for once in my life, I save myself." Alex asserted.

"Alex.." Ruby gasped.

"Let's face it, what else could be ripped away from me before this bullshit ends? I lost my parents, my home, I'm in an entirely different f**king dimension, and just five minutes ago I found out my life was a f**king lie! There's only so much shit I can take, and I don't know what I really want for myself anymore!! So, yeah. Next time I see Omicron, or Sigma, or any one of those sadistic assholes, I'm going to freaking KILL THEIR ASSES!!!" Alex huffed, finally plopping down into his seat, the onset of a headache pounding in his skull.

"This is hard for all of us to take in! For all I know, Rainbow, Applejack, Rarity and the rest could die in a matter of weeks, maybe even months if we go through with this!" Twilight yelled back.

"Excuse me, Miss Priss, but I just found out I'm a f**king space alien with lightning powers, instead of a wimpy little kid with lightning powers! On top of that, all of my friends, not just you, or Rainbow, or Cloudchaser and Flitter or Ruby, but all of them are almost certain to die at some point, so excuse me for having a MENTAL BREAKDOWN!!" Alex angrily spat back.

"Ruby, help me out here! Tell him he's being unreasonable!" Twilight urged the red-cloaked huntress.

Ruby turned to face Twilight.

"He's right." She sighed.

"What?!" Twilight growled.

"But you're right about one thing, it's hard for all of us to handle. But he's getting hit the hardest. You aren't trying to reason with another stuck-up magical bad guy. You're dehumanizing someone who already lost everything and might lose everything again. The last thing he needs is another person telling him he's being insane." Ruby explained.

"And, besides, we do constantly save his ass from Inquisitors, embarrassment, dying, you know the rest, but I think it is a bad idea to fight the bad guy alone." Vanoss added.

Twilight looked back at the two, and then at Alex.

"I don't blame you for wanting to get revenge, but it's still a bad idea to fight him alone. We're helping you, whether you like it or not." Twilight asserted.

"Okay... Locust, what's our next move?" Alex hardened his tone.

"We have installed tracking devices onto various Red Star vehicles. We believe they are going to activate a super-weapon identified as 'ARES'." Locust explained.

"You already know something's up when a super-weapon is named after a boss from 'God of War'." Vanoss shrugged.

"What does it do?" Ruby asked.

"It is a kinetic Dust bombardment satellite." Locust elaborated.

"That explains all of the dust robberies in Vale you were telling me about." Alex replied.

"What does that mean?" Vanoss asked.

"ARES is designed to literally drop giant Dust crystals on Remnant's surface, the speed the crystal will get from falling that fast, combined with the explosive power of a dust crystal of that size will have comparable power to a nuclear weapon." Twilight explained.

"Uh... Still not following." Vanoss nervously stated.

"You remember ODIN from Call of Duty: Ghosts? It's basically that, but instead of metal rods, it's explosive crystals." Alex simplified.

"Oh, shit."

"Who's going to intercept the satellite?" Ruby asked.

"We've arranged our best high-altitude strike team to deal with the problem, but we will have volunteers assault the craft as well." Locust clarified.

"Alright then. Thank you, Commander." Alex nodded before leaving the room.

"Get some sleep, you three. We have much to do tomorrow." Locust waved them away.

The remaining three stood up and left through the still opened door behind them.

"May the Divine keep your souls.." He muttered.

Author's Notes:

In hindsight, I should probably have gone into a bit more detail with the new faction.

I'll try to have the next chapter up by Thursday, because screw schedules, because I'll end up procrastinating.
