The Nightmare Continues
Chapter 1: Bad Dreams
Load Full Story Next ChapterPrincess Luna knocked gently on her sister's door to wake her. "Sister. It is time to rise the sun," Luna spoke calmly. She always woke Celestia up after she had to lower the moon.
"Yes, Luna. How's the weather tonight?" Celestia asked as she patted down her messy bed mane.
"It is raining. It has been like this for a few days now. Sister, could you tell the pegasi to please stop all the rain? It is not pleasant raising the moon in the rain," Luna sighed. Celestia nodded as she started walking out to raise the sun.
"Now, Luna, you go get some rest for the morning, and I'll wake you up when the afternoon comes. Good morning, sister," Celestia smiled. Luna smiled back and walked into her room.
The room was darker than usual; the dark drapes were closed and no candles were lit. Luna lit up her horn and and grabbed a candle off the bottom shelf of the table beside her bed, and used a small magic spell to light it. she set it in the black candle holder beside her bed. Luna dare not open the drapes when she slept in the morning, as the sun would always wake her up. The blue alicorn still often wondered why nopony would stay awake during her beautiful hours, but eventually came to the conclusion that it was because they couldn't sleep while sun was out.
Luna took off her crest, crown, and shoes and set them on her dresser across the room. She climbed under her lavender covers and fell asleep after a few minutes of staring at the dark purple wall.
Suddenly, everything was completely dark and luna could not even see the ground beneath her. Luna's immediate reaction was to light up her horn. She was walking on a path, in the dead of night. My goodness, even the darkest hours of the night are not usually this dark... Luna thought. Night was only ever this dark when she had become Nightmare Moon. Beyond the pathway the princess of the night was walking on looked like a garden of some sorts. Luna walked slowly towards it, while scanning the area to make sure that there was no danger. The moon was in its highest position of the night, however a mist in the sky covered all the stars which was why it was so dark when Luna first entered this world. Since Luna had such experience with the night and dreams, she already knew that it was a dream from the start. She knew that this would turn out to be a nightmare, but decided to keep in the dream because she knew that this would be meaningful in some way.
The alicorn reached the black gates of the garden, which were actually silver, but the shadows that reflected on it made the effect that they were black. Luna pushed up a small latch with her muzzle, and a gust of wind pushed open the rusty silver gate.
Luna started to consciously walk through the garden of darkness. Shadows lurked in every corner. She had her eyes peeled for any possible threat that could be around the corner. However, it was also very pretty if you saw the scenery in a certain way. The garden was filled with glimmering back, deep purple, and navy blue plants of all kinds. Luna turned another corner. It was the end of this place. Well, what was the point of THIS? Surely I had this odd dream for a reason. Luna thought. But as her eyes scanned the end of the garden more, in the far right was a figure of a kind. It looked like a pony, yes, but a taller alicorn. Luna could only see the silhouette of the figure.
"Hello? Who might be there!?" Luna shouted, trying not to sound intimidated by this tall figure, even though she was quite frightened. The silhouette did not respond, but it shifted its body to face Luna.
"Why yes, Luna. Iwashoping you'd meet me here. I feared that maybe I was in the wrong dream..." A familiar voice that Luna would recognize anywhere spoke. It was her former friend, Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon flew out of the shadows and into Luna's visibility range from the darkness. "Luna. Its been a long time. Are you doing well?"
"I... guess so...?" Luna replied. She looked away from the villain and into the dark, empty distance. "Where are we? Why did you take me here, Nightmare Moon? I'll NEVER return to that hellish state!" Luna shouted. But Nightmare Moon put a hoof over her soft lips before she could jump to any more conclusions.
"Luna, Luna. Relax. I would never hurt a fly," Nightmare Moon chuckled. Luna glared back at her.I can't believe I gave all my power to HER. Luna thought in disbelief. She sighed.
"You almost KILLED my sister!" Luna growled at her former friend. Nightmare Moon smirked.
"No. Wealmost killed Celestia. It was not all my doing. You gave all of your powers to me, and became a part of me. And I did it all for you, Luna. You wanted everypony to see your beautiful night instead of that blinding sun. I helped you. I was more powerful than you know," Nightmare Moon growled suddenly irritably.
"If you really were that powerful, then the elements wouldn't have sent us to the moon. Nightmare Moon, you made promises that you did not keep. You said that ponies would see my night, in a harmless way forever. You said that nothing would be able to stop you, and that if you gained my powers we could be strong enough to rule Equestria together," Luna argued.
"But on that thousandth day that I- I mean we returned, then we could've ruled Equestria. But your heart got won over by friendship. Friendship. Now why would you sacrifice power for something like friendship? You could've gotten so much more out of everything I offered you. The thing is, Luna, you and I are both creatures of the night. We both understand each other. And I'm the only other who understands you fully. So join me again, this time we WILL rule. I have gathered enough strength. And I've been watching you, Luna, and by the looks of it, you have to,"
"No. Not again. I really missed my sister while I was gone for a thousand years. Plus, I am not jealous and do not feel unappreciated anymore," Luna smiled proudly. Nightmare Moon just laughed.
"How funny, Luna. The ponies never needed you. Do you ever see any of them awake gazing at the night sky? Or how about the wedding. When Celestia went down, nopony bothered to ask for your assistance, did they? No, they left it up to Twilight Sparkle and her friends, not the other major ruler of Equestria," Nightmare Moon giggled. Luna frowned. "Now, Luna. You must wake up now to attend your royal duties, but I will talk to you again tomorrow when you go to sleep,"
Luna shot her eyes open. "I didn't know that she could haunt dreams too!" She dragged herself out of bed and down to the kitchen to grab some food. She started to dread the next mooring when Luna had to sleep again.
