She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not

Chapter 1: Mountains Out Of Molehills

The past few weeks Sonata had been feeling the effects of what some would call a crush. How it developed she wasn't exactly sure, but when she woke up a few mornings ago in Aria's arms, she knew she was in love. It made her so excited that she wanted to sing like one of those princesses in those kiddie movies!

She started leaving subtle hints. Lingering touches, sultry looks, anything and everything she could think of or had read in one of those teen girl magazines under Adagio's bed.

Aria was severely confused. For the past few weeks Sonata had been acting funny, and not funny as in 'haha' funny. Touches that made her uncomfortable and stares that sure as heck weren't kid friendly, she wondered what could have affected the girl. There were times where things got awkward between all three of them because Sonata would nuzzle Aria or follow her around at school. And if there was one thing that Aria hated, it was when Sonata bugged her.

Adagio noticed the sudden change in Sonata too. And not that she didn't care about the girl, (she was the youngest out of the three after all) She just found the whole thing...odd. And didn't exactly know how to approach the situation.

It wasn’t just the two of them who had noticed it either. Their friends, (Well. more like acquaintances) at Canterlot High had given them weird looks when Aria showed up to the lunch table with Sonata on her arm. In fact, it was probably a matter of time before the entire school thought they were an item.

One day at lunch, Sunset decided to be the one to pop the question. “Do you uh, do you guys go out now?” It had been a question that was burning in the minds of the other girls at the table, and possibly everyone else.

Adagio banged her head on the table. “I’ve been wondering that this entire time.”

Aria frowned. “I couldn’t tell you even if we were,” She responded. She inhaled when Sonata squeezed her tight. The sudden attachment to her didn’t just bother her, it annoyed her. She never really liked Sonata all that much to begin with, but she supposed when you spend enough time with someone over the course of a thousand years, you learn to tolerate them.

Sonata was definitely starting to push the envelop here.

Right now all three of them were in their windowless hideout once again, watching some cable tv movie on the TV they had managed to keep after having to return all the items they had tricked people into giving them.

It was an especially cold night, with the temperature placing below two degrees. Which was abnormal for Canterlot since it wasn't completely up north.

Adagio was curled up on the recliner in the wool blanket she slept in, and Aria and Sonata took up the couch, huddled up in Sonata's blanket.

The younger girl had her arms around Aria once again, resting her head on her shoulder. "Ari," She said with a pout. "You haven't said anything the whole movie! Are you okay?" She fluttered her eyelashes.

Aria gulped. "Yeah, Nata. I'm just fine. Could, could you let go of me please?" She tried to wriggle herself free of Sonata's grasp but failed. "If you let go of me I'll get you a taco," She enticed.

Sonata's arms immediately released themselves from Aria's upper body.

Aria breathed out a sigh of relief. She didn’t actually think that would work. "Sonata, why have you been acting like this?" She asked, turning to her. She wanted to nip this in the bud as quickly as possible, so that they could go back to their normal lives and forget about this whole thing.

"Like what?" Sonata asked her, looking genuinely confused.

"Like a lovesick school girl." Aria told her, not buying into her innocent act. "You got a crush on me or somethin'?"

Sonata blushed. "Wha? No! What made you think that?!" She said, trying to act nonchalant but completely failing to do so.

Aria folded her arms and raised an eyebrow. "You want me to count everything down? Because I will." She looked at her expectantly. “It’s a pretty long list too. And we have all night.”

Sonata chuckled nervously. "I don't have a crush on you!" She insisted. She didn't know why she kept denying it. She might as well just tell the truth.

Aria rolled her eyes, possibly regretting what she was about to do. "Fine then." She kicked her feet up on the couch and held her arms out. "Come lay on me like you did before." She instructed. She smirked when she saw the heat rise to Sonata’s pale blue face.

"What?!" Sonata and Adagio said at the same time, though in completely different tones of confusion.

"Aria what the heck is going on here?!" Adagio barked. "You too, Sonata!" She put a hand to her chest. "You two aren't dating are you?! Please tell me you're not dating each other!" The last thing Adagio needed was for her two idiots to start dating. She didn’t mind if they got boyfriends from time to time. After all, they had been trapped in this world for a long time, and they did have human urges. She just minded if they started dating each other. It would mess the whole group dynamic up and would annoy the hell out of her. Adagio was never one for romance.

Aria exhaled through her nose. "We're not. Relax, Dagi. Actually, I know how this whole thing started," she said sitting up.

"You do?" Both girls asked.

"Yes. Sonata, what you are feeling is affection towards me because I helped you out the other night. You started liking me because I'm not normally nice to you, and once I showed you a softer side of myself, you decided that if you showed me that you like me, you'd see that side of me again."

"That, and your body is really warm." Sonata added dreamily. She cleared her throat. "Er, I mean, I have no idea what you are talking about!"

Adagio smacked her forehead. "Don't you think it's a bit late for the cute dumb girl act?"

Aria put a hand on Sonata's shoulder. "Look Nata, I'm flattered that you have an interest in me, but I'm gonna be honest with you and say even if I did consider dating you it wouldn't work out."

Sonata pouted. "Why?"

"For one thing, you're annoying. And needy. And I already spend every waking minute with you so there's no need for us to be in a relationship. Plus that would make things awkward and I think Adagio has seen enough weird stuff today." She gestured to the other girl who was leaned back in the recliner pinching the bridge of her nose.

She turned back to Sonata. "Do you even have another reason besides the one you gave me as to why I'm suddenly the object of your affection?"

Sonata tapped her chin. "Well...uh...No...not really, actually." She shrugged. "I guess I got so caught up in having a crush on you I didn't actually think about it." She looked down, twiddling with her fingers. "It's just...I didn't know how to properly repay you. I mean you could have just said no, but you didn't."

Aria wrapped an arm around her, smiling wryly. "A simple thank you will suffice next time," She told her. “And don’t expect me to be nice to you all the time. I’m as nice as Adagio is caring. Just, promise me next time you’ll at least let me know what you’re planning before you go off and decide we’re fated lovers or something?”

Sonata thought for a moment. "Okay. But just this once," She leaned in and kissed Aria on the cheek. "You deserve it!" She giggled when she saw Aria start to blush. "I was like a princess in distress and you were my knight in shining armour waiting to save me!"

"Ugh, gag," Adagio groaned, pointing at her mouth. "Any more romantic garbage you wanna say before I upchuck my lunch?" She asked.

"We should go hang out at Sugarcube Corner tomorrow. Just me and you." Aria proposed.

Sonata beamed. "Really?!"

"Sure. Why not? I figure we should at least give being real friends a try before jumping into any of this dating stuff." Aria responded, pulling her close.

"All I know is if you two idiots start going out there's a chance of you reproducing and I'm severely not okay with that," Adagio frowned.

"Aw, is someone being a grumpy umpy pants because she doesn't have a special someone?" Sonata asked, jumping onto the recliner, much to the annoyance of the older girl. She pinched Adagio's cheeks. "Don't worry Dagi, we'll find you someone."

"Yeah, like Shimmer! I see the way you look at her sometimes!" Aria chimed in. "I have a feeling the feeling is mutual too!"

"Both of you be quiet!" Adagio ordered angrily.

Sonata hugged her with a laugh as she started to pout.
