Chapter 1: High On Air

Since the beginning, Soarin had always loved Rainbow's determination and bravery. Over the months of the Equestria Games and beyond he'd only felt his passion grow for his mare. Over recent weeks the stallion had even officially moved in with Dash, of which the media unfortunately caught wind in the end. Soarin was pretty certain it had something to do with Pinkie Pie's moving in party, but Rainbow insisted it was totally worth it.

As the attention slowly died down though, the pair had begun living out their daily lives as usual. Dash would go on weather patrol over the course of the week, which would leave time for Soarin to train for the next Wonderbolt show. In essence the two lived in perfect harmony together, spending nights laughing at one another's comical pranks or flying through the night’s sky on a training session together.

However, there was one aspect Soarin hadn't really countered for in his time with Rainbow. Being an element bearer, Dash was usually put in situations which could mean certain doom. Though this never seemed to bother Soarin as he knew Dash could handle it, there had always been a worry at the back of his mind, which kept getting larger the more Dash continued to get in these situations. The latest one, with Tirek, had been the worst yet.

The stallion had flown back to the home immediately after he’d regained his flight, arriving to find Rainbow Dash laying on one of the cloud couches in the living area. The sound of his hoofsteps caused her to look over at him with a smirk.

“No need to thank me,” she said confidently, chuckling a little as she got up on all fours and trotted over to him.

Soarin replied with a smirk of his own, “Knew you’d do it, but I’m not gonna lie, I was a little doubtful,” he said embracing the mare, “You know he took all our powers?”

Dash nodded in the embrace, “Yeah, he took everypony’s, but Twilight kicked his flank when she turned all angry, and remember that box from the tree of harmony I was telling you about?”

Soarin thought back for a moment, resting his chin on Rainbow’s shoulder, “I think so. Is that the one you guys were trying to find keys for?” he asked.

“Yeah, well one of them actually turned out to be that Wonderbolt pin Spitfire gave me after that day of training,” Dash explained with another giggle, “When we opened it we all got these super awesome manes and coats and we took him down!” the mare exclaimed.

Soarin added a laugh of his own to the conversation, “Well, I’m at least glad I still have a marefriend in one piece,” he said with a wink.

“I could come back in two next time if you’d like,” Dash said jokingly.

Soarin shook his head playfully at the question, “But I like you better as one piece,” he protested with a nuzzle.

Rainbow rolled her eyes as she nuzzled back, “I’ll always be in one piece, goofball.”

“Are we adding that name to the nickname list?” Soarin inquired.

“You betcha,” Dash said with a beaming smile as the two finally parted from their embrace.

“So, you wanna cook or go out tonight?” Dash asked as she cantered over to the stairs, Soarin heading with her.

“Whichever; guess most places in Ponyville will be busy with Pinkie’s ‘Hooray, we didn’t all die’ parties,” Soarin said with a grin.

“Alright then, I guess it’s my turn to pay anyways,” Dash said with an approving nod as the two ascended the stairs, “You got enough mane products for going out tonight?” she teased with a wide smirk.

Soarin sighed, “You’re not gonna give up on that prank, are you?” Soarin asked. A shake of Rainbow’s head was all he needed as an answer, “Maybe it’s time I started pranking you, then?” Soarin asked.

“Ha!” Rainbow exclaimed, “Pranking the top prankster, I don’t think so, loverboy,” she replied.

Soarin only grinned as he began to think of ways to have his revenge. The two alighted the stairs and continued to their room to prepare for the night. Thanks to clouds being easy to re-shape and move around, it wasn’t hard to make the master bedroom bigger to accommodate the extra pony. Soarin and Dash had divided their room into equal halves, each having their own side to hang clothes and memorabilia. While Rainbow’s side consisted of Wonderbolt posters and trophies, Soarin’s consisted of pictures of family and friends. Most importantly, pictures of him and Rainbow on various activities and dates over the past months.

As he took off his Wonderbolt suit he looked down at the small photo frame on his bedside table, a picture of him and Rainbow just after the Equestria Games, it was just a simple photo of him and Rainbow, but to Soarin, it meant to whole world.

“Do you have to be so mushy?” Dash asked, snapping Soarin from his thoughts as the stallion turned around to find the mare staring directly towards him. He felt a light flush on his cheeks as he tried to smile it off.

Dash giggled slightly at her stallion’s reaction, “It’s alright Soar, I kinda like that picture anyways,” she started, “otherwise I wouldn’t let ya keep it,” she finished with a wink.
“Who's to say I would let you take it?” Soarin asked, his smile turning into a more competitive grin as he turned back around to hand the suit in the wardrobe.

“What was that Soar?” Rainbow whispered into his ear.

Before Soarin could even comprehend how Dash had been so fast he was already feeling the soft lips of Rainbow’s connecting with his as the two shared a kiss. Soarin’s thoughts faded to black as he shut his eyes and returned the kiss eagerly, though all too soon, Rainbow pulled back.

“So… should I ask the question again?” Rainbow asked, boastful as ever.

Soarin still had a vague expression of shock and bliss, and he couldn’t help but blush at his ultimate defeat.

Rainbow giggled at the sight of her stallion, “It’s alright, Soar, I’m not that bad,” she said with a grin, placing another kiss on his cheek, “I love you.”

“I love you too, Dashie,” Soarin said, rolling his eyes as Dash began making her way out of the room.

“I’ll wait for you to get ready,” Dash said with a smile as she left.

Soarin nodded as he turned back to check his mane, his heart still beating slightly faster than normal from the previous few moments. He smiled as he turned back to the picture, but as he looked, a small thought started to nibble it’s way at the back of his mind. Tirek. What if he’d won? Would Soarin and Dash even be planning to go out? The two had just faced certain doom, not knowing whether either was going to see the other again, but for Dash, life just seemed to be back to normal. Soarin loved his mare, more than anything, but now he thought… what if something was to happen?

“Soarin?” Dash asked from downstairs, “Even Rarity doesn’t take that long to check her mane!”

Soarin chuckled as he turned back, putting the thought deep within his mind as he trotted towards the door, “Coming, Dash,” he replied.

“Finally!” she said with a happy smile as she saw him descend the stairs. Soarin only shook his head playfully at the comment as Rainbow opened the door for the pair to trot outside.

“So, you got any particular restaurant in mind?” Soarin asked as the pair spread their wings.

“Sugarcube Corner?” Dash replied. Soarin grinned and nodded in response, Rainbow rolling her eyes as she knew exactly the reason why, “We’ll have pie for dessert,” she affirmed with the stallion, before they both let out a small giggle.

“Race you there?” Soarin asked as the pair calmed down.

“You betcha!” Dash said, getting ready, “On your marks, get set… go!”
