Chapter 198: 197. The journey
Previous Chapter Next ChapterTwilight had arrived in Canterlot while it was still in the process of being rebuilt. After looking around she had finally found the princess' helping out with the reconstruction of the city. Twilight looked on in awe as many large stones floated about in the sky that were enveloped in a golden glow just before they split up into many different pieces and began to fall slowly to the ground to form a home of one of the residents of the city.
During the explosion that Screwball had created, it had completely destroyed the entire city, along with the countless books and artifacts that the Canterlot Library once held. All of that knowledge, lost, never to been seen again. Twilight gave a tired sigh as she trotted over to the princess.
"Hello Princess." She sighed before giving her mentor a hug.
"Good day to you my faithful student. What brings you to New Canterlot today?" Celestia said with a smile as she nuzzled Twilight.
"Princess, I am going to go on an expedition across Equestria to try and locate a spell that will aid us in releasing Midnight and Kindle from their stone prison. I can't take Spike with me and I would like to request that he be permitted to stay in Canterlot." She stated causing Celestia's eyes to go a little wide.
"Twilight? Are you sure about this?" She asked as she watched the young unicorn nod sadly.
"I don't want to leave Ponyville, or Spike. But I know that if I don't, then I will regret having not looked for the answer to free our stallion." She sighed again as she squint her eyes shut. Tears seeping from the corners and falling down her cheeks.
"Very well then." Celestia smiled to her student. "Then let me aid you in your quest." She smiled as she opened a small portal and pulled out a regal necklace, placing it onto her student.
"What's this?" Twilight asked as she looked down to it.
"This insignia will let you purchase anything you need at anytime you wish. It is also enchanted to protect you when you need protecting. So you will no longer need to worry about your well being during your adventure. Just remember to come back as quickly as you can once you find the answer. Midnight, as well as all of your friends will be here and waiting for your safe return, whether or not you have found what you are looking for." Celestia smiled to her as she gave her one final nuzzle.
"Thank you princess. I will try my best to find a spell to save our stallion." She smiled just before her horn lit up one final time and she disappeared, teleporting back to Ponyville.

Back in Ponyville, everything was moving along just as it would every day before. Rarity and Applejack had pulled the other elements together at Sugar Cube Corner for a farewell surprise party, hosted by none other than Pinkie Pie herself. Dash had gone to wait at the library just in case Twilight had returned and went there instead of around to her friends homes to say goodbye.
As Dash entered into Sugar Cube Corner first, the girls all took in a deep breath before yelling out SURPRISE! Just as Twilight entered into the shop.
"Girls? What's going on?" Twilight asked as she looked around the room to see all of her friends with tear stained faces.
"Well, we didn't want you to disappear thinking you weren't going to be missed darling. So we told Pinkie and well, you scan see the rest." Rarity smiled sadly as she looked around the shop to see it decorated. A large banner that said Come back soon, plastered across it hanging across the entrance to the shop.
"Ya know we're gonna miss ya Twi, no matter how long yer gone." Applejack smiled to her as she pulled Twilight into a hug.
"I'm gong to miss you too girls." She giggled softly as she rubbed a tear from her eye.
"Alright, enough with the mushy stuff! Let's PARTY!" Pinkie shouted causing them all to cheer.

Several hours later it was getting later into the evening. The party had come to a close, allowing Twilight to head back to the library so that she and Spike could organize it one last time.
As she entered into the library however, she heard some soft crying coming from in her study. Trotting quietly to the door she entered to see Spike sitting at her desk as he was writing a letter. He stopped however as he saw Twilight coming toward him.
"Twilight!" He shouted as he skidded over the desk, sending parchment and books flying as he leapt at her, making contact and wrapping his little arms around her neck, hugging her tightly. :I thought you left me without saying goodbye." He cried out as the purple unicorn wrapped her hooves around the little dragon, hugging him tightly as well.
"Silly Spike, you know I would never leave you without doing that. You're my best friend and number one assistant after all right?" She smiled to him as she pulled away seeing his tear stained face nod happily toward her. "Good." She giggled as she pulled away from him. So what were you writing just a minute ago?" She asked as she looked to the desk.
"It was......... a goodbye letter. To let you know that I'll miss you, and wait for you to come home, no matter how long it will take." He chuckled sheepishly.
"Well then, you had better finish writing it. It will be nice to read the letter while I'm gone. So that I'll know that you'll be here waiting for when I return." She smiled giving him another rough hug.
"Twi........." Spike began, catching her attention again. "Do you really have to go?" He asked.
Twilight gave a sigh as she lowered her head. "Spike, as much as I would like to stay, I need to find a counter spell to save Midnight and Kindle. To return them to normal. They saved all of creation, so it's the least I could do to help them."
"I understand, and don't worry, I'll take good care of the library while your gone." He smiled giving her a salute.
"Don't you think you may need some help here?" She asked as she looked around at all of the still stacked books.
"No way! Don't forget that present Rarity got you." He chuckled as he pointed to the glowing orb floating within a glass case on her desk.
Twilight gave a giggle upon seeing the glowing orb. "Yea, that was nice of her wasn't it. I'm just glad you won't have a hard time taking care of the library while I'm away." She smiled softly to the baby dragon. "I'm going to go to sleep early so I can finish packing in the morning." She said as she headed out of the room.
"Ok, I'll finish up putting the books up before heading to bed myself." Spike said as he pulled the orb from the case and walked into the main part of the library as he began to toss a few books at it.
Twilight went upstairs as she listened to books being re-shelved through the magical orb. As she lay down onto her bed, she pulled the covers up onto her, taking in a deep breath as she could still catch the lingering smell of the last time Midnight had laid in that same bed with her. She began to silently cry into her pillow as the heart ache was to much for her. As the night went forth, sleep found her although reluctantly as it left her pillow stained with tears and her bed with a cold sweat that followed her through the night. The morning however, would shed new light onto her path, so that she may go forth into the world and find the one spell to bring her stallion, and her shattered world, back together once again.
