Chapter 156: 155. Saving Griffonia

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

As the evening fell into night, Midnight had continued his journey through Griffonia. Although It was now night and most of the shops had closed down for the evening. Midnight knew that he would have to go a step further in order to supply the butchers with meat. To his disappointment though, he had to break in. By breaking in I mean stealth teleporting into the premises, and then filling the lockers and storefronts with meat.

As dawn was breaking over the horizon, Midnight had just finished filling the fortieth butcher shop and teleported out of it when he let out a large yawn.

"Man, now I remember why I hated that third shift job." He chuckled softly as he took flight.

The early morning sun shone through the slightly cloudy morning. The clouds showing a bright orange and slightly pink hue as the sun slowly crept higher and higher into the sky. Midnight was looking down while flying over a butcher shop he had filled earlier in the night. As he gazed down to it he noticed that quite a few griffons were standing in a line outside the store front. Apparently they had smelled the fresh meat just like the first shop owner he had visited before. He gave a knowing chuckle as he headed toward the next city in the long line of others that her would need to visit in order to fill their shops. He gave another yawn as he flew along his path.

"Man I am so freaking sleepy." He yawned before landing onto a small cloud. "I guess a small nap wouldn't hurt." He chuckled as he pulled an alarm clock on a string from his stash portal then placed it around his neck. He lay down onto the cloud before casting a small warming spell onto himself. Before he had rested fully onto the cloud he was out like a light.

"Hey! Dweeb! Wake up!" Came a voice from Midnight's side along with a sharp jab to his arm.

*BRIIIIIIIIIIIIIING*

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!" He squawked out in surprise as his eyes shot open just as the jab connected with his arm and the alarm closk going off at the same time. He stood up onto the cloud he was previously sleeping on, fur and feathers on end as he looked around quickly. He stopped though as he turned to the laughing griffon at his side.

"Duuuuuuude! That is the funniest thing I have ever seen!" Gilda laughed loudly while sitting on a small cloud.

Midnight gave an annoyed snort toward her as he began to do a few stretches to loosen his muscles from his nap. He gave a long yawn before looking over to Gilda who was just eying him over.

"Take a picture, it'll last longer." He smirked to the gazing griffon only to get her to chuckle.

"No camera dweeb. Sides, yer not my type." She smirked.

"Really now? A griffon from legend, and you're not the least bit interested? I feel a little hurt." He smirked back in mock pain.

"Heh, cute, still though, you're not my type." She laughed.

"So then why stalk me?" He grinned causing her to sputter for a moment.

"I uh.......... wanted to say thanks again......... for.......... you know............. helping out my family........." She trailed off for a moment. "It's not like other griffons to help out each other in their time of need, but you really stuck your neck out for us back there, and all of these other butchers as well." She smiled softly.

"It's no problem. All part of who I am after all." He chuckled.

"So are you really part dragon? Or are you just joshing me?" She spoke up causing him to chuckle.

Midnight smirked, know this question would come up eventually. He took in a deep breath and bellowed out a large plume of fire before looking over to Gilda with a smirk. "That answer yer question sweetheart?" He chuckled.

"Whoa, seriously? But I thought you were just part of an old wise tail. You know, a work of fiction?" She said giving a hint of slight fear.

"Sorry to disappoint." He said while looking down over the edge of the cloud he was resting on.

"No, I didn't............ Ugh! Never mind." She groaned. "I just never thought all of those old stories my father told me when I was a cub were real is all. Then I come across you, a savior to all of Griffonia, who goes out of his way to help every single griffon to be fed and saved from starvation. It's just kinda humbling ya know?" She said giving a sheepish grin while scratching through her head feathers.

"Hey, don't get me wrong here. I'm glad to have helped out. I don't want to see any being suffer from being starved to death. Even you look a little worse for wear darlin." He said while nodding to her slightly bared ribs.

"Hey now, no staring." She spoke up while unfolding her wing over her side and giving a huff.

"Sorry, I'm sure you'll get that back to normal in no time though, as long as you don't grow tired of eating hydra meat that is." He chuckled.

"Yea, it's a bit more chewy than I like, but it has enough flavor to make up for it." She smirked.

"Anyway, mind telling me why yer stalking me?" He chuckled seeing her blush again.

"Well, I just wanted to say thanks again, and if your ever in town again, you should stop by and say hi. It's not often we get to see a legend in the flesh ya know. Plus it would do the town some good and keep their hopes up seeing you as well." She smiled.

"I'll see what I can do, no promises though. Even being as old as I am I still can't get away from mother since she still see's me as a hatchling." Midnight face palmed only to cause Gilda to laugh.

"So how old are you then? I thought most dragons left to be on their own when they were around twenty or so years old."

"Yea, because they get freaking huge. Me on the other hand, I'm almost fifty and Mama dragon keeps a watchful eye on me. It's so humiliating at times." Midnight sighed trying to keep up his guise.

"Fifty?! Yer an old timer?" She chuckled.

"In griffon years maybe. But I'll live for a few hundred years. Dragons live to be around a thousand years old. Griffons around a hundred. Seeing as I am a mix of the two, I would say maybe three hundred years would be a good bet for my lifespan. Besides that, I'll stay in my prime for at least a hundred years." He chuckled giving Gilda a wink.

"Cute, but yet barking up the wrong tree." She smirked.

"Heh, got your eye on a certain lady then?" He laughed.

"Well, some pony anyway. But the last time we spoke wasn't of such good terms. Plus I hurt her friends feelings as well. I doubt she would think of me anytime soon." Gilda sighed.

"Never know until you try sugar. Anyway, thanks for the wake up call. I had better get back to saving all of Griffonia." He chuckled before taking flight.

"You'll come back by won't you? To at least say goodbye." Gilda asked giving him a smile.

"My dear, with me it is never goodbye, it is merely, until we meet again." He smiled giving a bow before taking off toward another city.
