Chapter 144: 144. Separation anxiety

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Three days has since passed from the moment Midnight had been split into three separate ponies. During this time each of them had found a place to stay so as to not cause any disharmony between them that would possibly interfere with a spell that could return them to normal. The days seemed to drag on while each part of Midnight began to get closer to each of the mares he was staying with.

Blade would help tend to the farm with AJ, and even give Big Macintosh some time off so that he could go and see Fluttershy since he had gotten better from his cold. The two spent most of the day in the marketplace selling goods to all the ponies that came by. Many of which would stop and look the tall and very well built earth pony over. Some giving him a few odd looks while some of the mares were flirting. He of course was a gentlecolt about everything and stayed next to AJ, unmoving when it came to the other mares.

Flame on the other hoof was constantly in competition with Dash, always flying around or helping her to come up with some new routines for the Wonderbolts. Eventually they would get tired and find a nice soft cloud to take a nap on before waking up to pull a couple pranks on some unsuspecting ponies below.

Buckler had spent all of his time within the library, taking every second he could to read another page within a book to try and locate a spell to help remedy his situation. Twilight would sometimes find him sitting up late at night, bags under his eyes as he had not slept in order to find the needed spell. She would eventually make him go to bed with her, but knew he would end up remaining awake. On one occasion she even had to knock him out with a spell in order to make him rest.

Those few days were quite hard on Buckler, not so much for the others though. However, there was one other who was having an even harder time than all of them combined.

"Sis, I just sent another pony away that came to get her dress that you were supposed to make for her. You can't keep mopping around up here. Uncle Midnight will be fine." Sweetiebelle sighed as she looked to her sister as she gaze out the window. Her face was stained with dried mascara that had slowly found its way down her cheeks from the tears she had been crying. Sweetiebelle gave a frown seeing her sister sigh and continue looking out the window. It had been three days now since her fiance had been split up into thirds from a spell, but none of the ponies he had been split into wanted to stay with her.

The overall feeling of worthlessness Rarity felt had began to take over her daily routines. She would loose interest in her normal every day tasks and just set them aside. Even her thoughts revolved around why none of Midnights pieces wanted to be around or with her. She could only feel sorrow toward the fact that Midnight may not actually love her at all. This thought alone was slowly eating away at her and causing her to fall farther and farther from the reality she knew. Sweetiebelle on one occasion had to shake her sister back to reality from her zoning out so hard that she had almost become catatonic.

"Sis, you need to relax, Uncle Midnight will be ok. I know Twilight or the princess will find a spell in time." Sweetie sighed as she trotted over to her sister, giving her a loving hug. "Come downstairs, Fluttershy and Big Macintosh brought over some dinner for you and me. Fluttershy said you need to keep up your strength for when Uncle gets back to normal."

Upon finishing Sweetie detached herself from her sister and slowly made her way downstairs. Rarity continued starring out the window looking toward the library in hope that a spell would be found soon. She knew it would take time, but she still couldn't shake the feeling that Midnight didn't love her like the rest of the girls.

In the castle, Celestia had spent the last three days within the royal archives rummaging through books and even having every professor within her school search through the texts as well. As time passed by however, she became more and more desperate to find a solution to the problem at hoof. After the close of the third day, she was giving up hope that something could be found that would change the Alicorn back into his normal self. She had decided to call it a night and was leaving the library when a loud commotion was heard nearby.

"I've found it! I've found it!" Shouted a unicorn professor as he ran through the crowd who was shouting in glee. After quickly locating the princess he rushed up to her opening the book to the page in question and placing it in front of her. After a few tense moments of looking over the spell, a smile spread across her face, but slowly turned to that of sadness upon seeing they ingredients needed in order to cast the spell. She closed her eyes giving a sigh, taking the book in her grasp and placing it under her right wing.

"Thank you for finding this. Everypony is dismissed, I shall start to gather the needed materials for the spell. Classes may resume next week, so please take this time to relax." She smiled to all the professors who all nodded in confirmation before leaving the royal archives.

As she made her way from the archives and through the library within the castle, she pulled open the book to the page in question once again before reading it to herself.

Counter spell for the Neural Curse Cure Spell that splits a pony into different personalities

Please note that this spell is extremely dangerous and can be fatal to the caster or the castee if done incorrectly. You will need to gather the following ingredients in order for the spell to work. Please note that a large mirror is needed for each of the separate personalities of the pony in question.

Large full body mirror (one for each personality)
10 Ivory Butterfly wings
1 teaspoon of Spectral dust freely given by the ghost of ages past.
1 Fire emerald battery charged to maximum capacity
2 candles (for each mirror)
1 phoenix feather freshly plucked from the source

Celestia mulled over the ingredients again and again. She had every single one of them within the royal vault, but one item in the list was so rare that she had only one of them which was the fire emerald battery. Unlike fire rubies, fire emeralds were almost non existent in this day and age. Most of the diamond dog clans would horde them since they could be a power source for up to twenty years within an entire clans mine. A decent sized clan would have at least a hundred dogs, each with their own burrow withing the mine. A single battery would run nonstop for machinery, lighting, furnaces, among other various things for up to twenty years on a single full charge depending on the size of course. Most of the gems would be rather small, about the size of a baseball. Larger and even far more rare gems like this have been seen as large as a basketball. However, the gem that Celestia held within the royal vault was just about the same size as a softball.

Now that Celestia had looked over the ingredients list, her vision fell onto the spell itself. After reading it over several times she gave a heavy sigh. The spell was difficult. Even for her to do. But at this time, failure was not an option. She had to do this. Not only for herself and Midnight, but for the ponies that loved him as well. They needed him as much as he needed them.

After some time to think over the spell, she had contacted Twilight, letting her know about the results of finding the spell. She had been told to gather the three ponies that made up Midnight and to bring them to just outside Sweet Apple Acres.

Upon arriving to the specified spot, everypony looked to the setting before them. There were three large mirrors standing up and all facing toward the center of a large transmutation circle on the ground carved into stone. The center of the stone was devoid of light as a large black gem was encased in the center about ten feet in diameter. In the center of that gem rested a fire emerald that glowed a bright orange. The other ingredients had been crushed and mixed together into a small bowl, ready to be placed into specific points of the stone circle. Celestia, along with Luna stood and waited until everypony had arrived. As everypony made it, Celestia began.

"Thank you all for coming so quickly. I am sure that Twilight has told you already about the spell." She stopped for a moment seeing most of them nod.

"Good, then you must also know that this is a very dangerous spell as well. In order for this spell to function properly and bring these three stallions back into a single form, they must all be harmonious in thought. I am saddened to say that this will be the only chance for me to do this spell, as it's ingredients are beyond rare, and I only have a single item of one of them."

"Speaking of rare, Where is Rarity? I thought she would be here to see this through and welcome back her stallion." Rainbow Dash spoke up causing the rest of the ponies to look around to try and locate her.

"Rainbow, why don't you go and check the boutique for her. If she is there, let her know whats going on." Twilight spoke up watching the cyan pegasus nod before taking off.

"Princess, If you wouldn't mind, I would like for Rarity to be present for this occasion. She did seem rather dejected that the three of us refused to stay with her." Buckler said before giving a sigh. "I do feel bad that I refused as well, I meant no disrespect, it's just that I wanted to locate the spell so badly and.........." He trailed off looking to the ground.

"It's alright, do not fret over your decision. I am sure that Rarity is fine and will be more than happy to know that her stallion will soon be whole once more." Celestia smiled to Buckler but stopped as an earth shattering boom rolled across the land just before Rainbow Dash came to a halt onto the ground skidding at least a hundred yards before stopping just inches from everypony.

"You guys, something is wrong with Rarity." Is all she said while panting hard. Everyone looked to each other in worry as they took off toward the boutique.

After a few minutes of sprinting to the boutique, they all made a quick entry as Dash lead them upstairs and into Rarity's room. She was laying on the floor sprawled out, her eyes had glazed over while staring straight forward into the wall. He mane and coat were severely disheveled and filthy from not having taken a shower in several days. The mascara that once rested on her face were now long black streaks leading from her eyes to the floor into a small dried puddle. She looked like she had even been starved for several days as her ribs were showing slightly through her once ivory coat.

The three remnants of Midnight rushed forward slowly picking her up from the floor and setting her onto her bed. As they tried to set her upright in a seated position, she just fell over, her eyes unblinking, and her breathing almost nonexistent.

"What happened to her?" Asked Flame as he began to trot worriedly in place.

"Duno, but it can't be good." Blade spoke up.

"Let's get her back to the spot where the spell is going to take place. I have a feeling I know what the problem is." Buckler spoke up as he levitated the ivory mare onto his back as they all began to exit the boutique.

Once they had arrived back to the spot within Sweet Apple Acres. Buckler sat Rarity down in between Twilight and Applejack before stepping in front of her, looking her directly in the eyes as he began.

"Rarity, everything will be ok, if you can understand me, then listen, Midnight will be back shortly. Don't you give up on him." He spoke while looking at her, a passion burning within his eyes as worry began to overtake him. For an instant though he thought he saw her eyes move to meet his, a glimmer of hope. She wasn't lost yet.

"You two get into position." Buckler spoke up to the other stallions, they all nodding in unison in understanding.

As they trotted toward the circle, Celestia began to give them instructions. "You three need to face one of the mirrors each. Once the spell has started, it cannot be stopped for any reason. The consequences are far to great to stop. I will need absolute concentration, so please do not speak. Once the spell has activated you will notice the mirrors start to ripple like water. Once they begin, you will need to walk into the mirror fully. Once inside you will see that you will all be facing forward as if you have turned around and were then walking out of the mirrors. In the center of the mirror circle you will see an object. You will all need to be in sync with each other before touching that object. Once you touch it the floor will slowly give way allowing you to sink into it. If you all have harmonious thoughts then you will reform as Midnight from the void gem within the stone circle. Remember to think in harmonious thoughts."

"I'm pretty sure that we are all thinking of the same thing." Blade spoke up nodding to the others.

"Saving Rarity." They spoke in unison as they quickly got into position.

Celestia stood still as her horn began to glow softly, quickly gaining in luminosity as the transmutation circle began to glow as well as the fire emerald. After a few seconds, the mirrors began to slowly warp and wave about like water. As the rhythm began to stay at a single pace, the three stallions slowly moved forward into the mirrors before them. Each closing their eyes as they walked through the rippling metallic fluid. Upon exiting the mirrors on the other side, they all stood still while looking at the object before them. It was Rarity as she was before Midnight's separation.

"Are you guys seeing this? What is Rarity doing here?" Flame spoke up seeing her.

"Ah see her to." Blade spoke up.

"Same here. I guess it's time then." He chuckled softly as he trotted forth, wrapping his hooves around the ivory mare. The others doing the same. "Everything is going to be ok.........." Buck said before trailing off as the floor began to slowly engulf them into darkness.

Back outside of the mirrors Celestia was starting to sweat from straining her magic. After watching the stallions walk into the mirrors she felt a pang from her magic use as she could tell they had succeeded in harmonizing their thoughts and hearts. She looked up to see the void gem grow an even darker color as a small flicker of light began to escape it. A small licking flame that slowly began to rise up along with a set of black ears and head. After a few short moments Midnight had reappeared fully from the gem, standing tall as if nothing had happened.

After finally appearing he blinked a few times to focus on his surroundings and taking in all the memories he had acquired within the past few days as separate ponies. He then remembered Rarity and the condition she was in, quickly turning around and galloping over to her.

"Rarity!? Oh God, are you ok?" He shouted as he hugged her. She was motionless still while he hugged her. After pulling away he looked down to her with watering eyes. "Rarity? Can you hear me doll?" He asked seeing her finally move and look up to him causing him to sigh in relief.

"Why?" She spoke softly as her eyes began to tear up. "Why don't you love me?"

Midnights heart almost shattered at those words as he looked to her. "What are you talking about, you know I love you."

"Then........... why didn't any of your other selves want to stay with me..........." She trailed off again.

"They all had their reasons. If it had been me I would have never left your side."

"BUT THEY WERE YOU!" She shouted causing him to back away slightly. "THEY WERE.........you........" She fell to the ground as she began to sob quietly.

After a moment of thinking, Midnight smiled as he slowly picked her up into an embrace and began to speak softly into her ear.

"Rarity, you were the first one to ever show me affection and love in this world. Someone to truly be my friend first before moving on to something more than friendship. I fell in love with you as my human self and as Midnight. As time passed I found others that I loved as well that I found a kinship in with parts of myself, not as a whole though, but just parts. The only reason my other selves chose to stay with others is because they could not love you like they loved the others. My feelings for you had been cut into thirds and placed within each of them while the stronger parts of them that felt something toward the others took over. It wasn't because they didn't want to be with you, It was because they were caught in between their feelings for you and the others they had grown to love over time that they could see a part of themselves being in. So don't think they didn't love you, they love you just as much as the others, they were conflicted though and chose the path that was better suited to them. Now that I am whole again, I have all that love ready for you, as a whole and more powerful than anything in existence. Rarity, I love you with all my being and not just because we share interests. Its an honest love that I can freely express. So please, don't thimmmmMMM!?" He was suddenly stopped as Rarity wrapped her hooves around his neck kissing him passionately.

A few seconds into the kiss they broke, Rarity gave a happy sob as she held onto the Alicorn with all her being. Everyone else slowly coming forward to join in the hug as well. It had been a rough few days. But now everything was getting back to normal.

After the successful casting of the ancient spell. Celestia had requested for Midnight to return to the castle for further testing my be medical staff. It had taken almost three hours to convince Rarity to let him go, but she had agreed so long as he makes no detours and teleports back as soon as he is done.

"Alright Tia, let's get this over with. I want to get back her as quickly as I can. I don't want to keep Rarity waiting." Midnight smirked back to his ivory love who was leaning on the door frame of the door leading into the boutique.

"Very well then. Do you have enough power to teleport?" She asked

"Yep, still a little weak from the spell, but I can still cast it." He smiled as his horn lit up for a second before a loud snap erupted from him sending him backpedaling and falling to the ground.

"SON OF A!!!!!" He yelled as he shook his head from the sudden pain. Rarity quickly coming to his side with Celestia at his other.

"Midnight?! Are you ok?" Rarity asked while looking him over.

"I'm fine, just a little stunned." He said while rubbing his head a little. "What happened? I tried to teleport but something backfired."

Celestia stood there, stock still as she gave a small gasp. "No.........." She spoke softly catching their attention.

"No? What do you mean NO?!" Midnight asked.

"The spell I used to put you back together said that there was an extremely small chance of a side affect." She sighed while looking away.

"And how small of a chance was it?" Rarity asked.

"One in a million."

"And what was the side affect?" Midnight asked while cocking a brow, suddenly feeling uneasy.

"That it would.............. erase every spell you knew from your memory."

*THUD*

"MIDNIGHT!?" They both yelled seeing him pass out from shock.

"He is not going to be happy when he wakes up." Celestia sighed while she watched Rarity giving him gentle nudges to try and wake him.
