Divide and Fall
Chapter 1: The Accident
Load Full Story Next ChapterIt was a normal day for the girls; they had just gone over to Twilight’s to help her with one of her projects she was working on for Princess Celestia herself. Twilight believe that if Celestia decreed she work on it, that’s what she would devote almost all of her time to. Though this idea was getting rather old to the other six of her friends, they respected her studious approach to any type of situation because, sometimes, that’s what the situation calls for. But Twilight’s setup today was insane, just a jumbled mess of papers, test tubes, Bunsen burners, beakers, books, and graduated cylinders; there was no rhyme or reason to the chaotic setup, and certainly Twilight couldn’t have done that, she can’t stand messes like this one.
But out came Twilight with her hair slightly messed up, obviously having worked overnight not getting even the slightest bit of sleep last night, holding some broken test tubes with her magic throwing them into the trash can. But she just smiled at her friends and gestured them over to a small area with a bunch of chairs directed in a small area with a large white screen and a small projector. Rainbow Dash groaned knowing that they were about to get the ‘egghead fill in’ as she called it, from Twilight on what she had called them over there to do. Twilight gave every girls a pill and water, though they didn’t know what the pill was for they took it anyways; seconds later their eyes looking focused straight ahead with each of them fidgeting slightly as the pill took its toll. Focus pills, one of Twilight’s personal favorites, a mix of natural herbs with some water created a quick and easy way to make sure that all of the girls were paying attention to the best of their abilities.
Twilight cleared her throat getting a clipboard and marking off everypony that actually showed up; everypony she asked was there, so she put the clipboard aside and grabbed a couple sheets of paper and began speaking. “Celestia asked me to create something, something nopony in Equestria has ever attempted before! She wants us to create a network that can connect ponies telepathically; I already have the spell written down on this piece of paper. Now since not everypony here is a unicorn, Celestia gave me some devices that can channel anypony’s energy into magic. All magic really is is natural energy we unicorn’s can focus because of our horns, no more, no less. But why you are all here is because I need some help; I need to modify these devices so that the will work on anypony, and so far I haven’t been able to do so. But then again, I haven’t had any helpers to work with either; but since you girls agreed we can finally start making progress. But the thing is there may be some minor complications with the device; she told me that the things aren’t exactly ‘100% safe’ but I’m working on that currently. But to spark the devices function, we need a unicorn, me, to ignite the functions; if nothing happens, we’ll start again, she gave me hundreds of the things to work with.” She said trying to catch her breath, feeling winded after not taking a single break from talking that entire time. “But I encourage you to not get them wet, I did that and it exploded on me; that’s kind of why I was in the hospital that one day. But that’s not the point right now, so let’s get out there, and do some science!” she said merrily as her lost looking friends followed her to the jumbled mess out in the middle of the room.
Rarity was the first to break the silence between them, “Dear, I’m sure that you probably thought this already but, If this does work; couldn’t there be some sort of side effect to long term exposure to the amounts of energy it puts out?” Rarity said everypony looking at her as if they were not expecting her of all ponies to know what was going on. “I’m sure I’m just being paranoid, but that much energy output could lead to some abnormalities in growth and some cells maybe; I’m pretty sure first we must find a safe way to do this.” Rarity finished as Twilight shook her head trying to get over that Rarity was actually taking interest and some concerns for the project.
“Ah of course, yes long term exposure can cause certain types of cancers and weaken you immune system; but that’s being worked on, I’m not sure how to get it right though. No matter how much time I put into it, it just never seems to come out right. The energy output on it right now is simultaneous to about how much you get from a single gag pen; but without that much the magic produced would be weak, so we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place with the energy output. Though I’m glad to see you have some concerns about it; I was quite flabbergasted on how well you knew about the energy output, but the official output lever right now is maybe ten volts.” Twilight said as Rarity nodded and turned away slightly to Rainbow Dash who was now beginning to say something.
“Well, wouldn’t we have a problem if they shorted out? If they short out it’ll cuase a chemical reaction with the batteries and the outer iron casing causing it to shock the user until the batteries would run out; and since the batteries being used are nine volts and a simple AA battery, they would get quite the surprise. And with the metal casing, the greater surface area of the case would make it so that the electricity is more distributed hitting more areas at once, and while your nerves try to comprehend that, it may lead to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia that would cause the user to go into electric shock. So we need an insulation of some sort; I would say a thick but comfortable rubber or rubber foam to absorb the shock from the device if that situation ever does happen.” Rainbow Dash finished everypony looking at her in shock as she ducked down and blushed. “I-I mean, the things ain’t my style; just add some foam or something to it to make it like… 20% cooler…” she said chuckling nervously.
Twilight shook her head once again, her mind trying to comprehend how Rainbow Dash, of all the mares in Equestria, Rainbow Dash, had extensive knowledge of science. “Well, I’d never thought of that actually! The rubber would absorb the shock so that the user could slip the device off without feeling the painful sting of the coursing electricity if the device itself ever shorted out! I must say Dash, that was quite the brilliant notion you made there; and don’t play dumb with me now, I heard all of that. Now you are going to be my personal helper today, because you seem to have some prior knowledge with these types of electronic devices.” Twilight said as Rainbow moved over to Twilight, still blushing a light red, “Now let’s get some work done girls!” Twilight said as she moved to give the girls the devices.
Each mare took a device and attached it to their forelegs; the devices not fitting comfortably around them at all. Each of the girls had pain in their eyes as they put on the tight devices, squeezing them on just to try and get this experimenting over with before Twilight went crazy with it. The first up was Fluttershy; she went up there with hesitation in her body language, and distrust of the device in her eyes. But she went up there anyways as Twilight calibrated the device to Fluttershy’s being; the device making a beeping sound and resetting itself.
Fluttershy’s face showed up on the screen as Twilight shot a small stream of magic to the device to get it started up with.
The device shook vigorously around on the shy pegasus’ foreleg; as she shot back when the device had stopped. Twilight gestured her to try out the device by levitating a small quill she had planted on a desk next to her. Fluttershy willed herself to do it and the quill started floating slowly up, as everypony else watched until the device shorted out giving off sparks and shooting the quill across the room.
Rainbow Dash quickly raced over and took the device off of Fluttershy, feeling a bit of the electric shock that Fluttershy was feeling with it on. Rainbow Dash threw the device plunging it into a small bowl of water, as she remembered ‘Last time I got it wet, it exploded,’ as she ducked down and the device violently exploded; sending shards of metal around the room. The girls got up as Spike looked down from upstairs, a shard of metal sticking slightly out of his back, “You know Twilight, I’d like to live to be a full size dragon you know.” Spike said pulling out the shard from his scales.
Twilight chuckled nervously, “Right, you know I’m sorry; but this work comes with certain dangers, but since you weren’t here you were unable to know what the right precautions were. I’m sure you’ll be fine, but that thing was like on fire; how in Equestria did that not hurt you!”
Pinkie shot up, “Oh I know! I know I know I know! We kinda scared him one day and he was all like -WHA!- and me and Dashie were all like –HAHAHAHAHA- but it gave little Spikey wikey the hiccups, so we asked him if he was okay. He said Dragons were fireproof, so we were all like –phew- but the prank was real funny, you should’ve been there!” Pinkie got cut off by Spike putting his finger over her mouth.
“Pinkie, I’m sure everyone already knows this, but you’re seriously and certifiably insane. There’s no doubt in my mind that you have something majorly wacky in your brain; though I’m not really wanting to figure out anyways. But yes, dragons are fireproof, it’s kind of what the scales are for Twi’; I thought you of all ponies would know that one.” Spike said as Pinkie started giggling, and everypony went to look at her.
“This thing is tickling me! I mean it’s all like –bzzzzzz- and it really tickles!” Pinkie’s laughter echoed throughout the room, reverberating off of the walls. “I wanna go next now, I wanna do magic! Magic is really cool, and would like really help in baking, and pranking! I’m sure that there are soo many wonderful things that can be done with magic! Like a flying dogfrog! I should do that! It sounds really fun!” the bright pink mare said getting an unsure look from everypony else.
“Pinkie Pie, you are so random. And by the way Pink, what you’re thinking of is Alchemy, not magic. Alchemy is a type of science really; a delicate art based on the fact that we cannot create nor destroy matter; only reshape it into something else. But Alchemy only works in some instances; you can’t turn a strand of hay into gold, it’s all based on a system of fair exchange really. You can’t make something into another, if there are substances you are missing to create the new substance…” Rainbow Dash said as she coughed and chuckled nervously, hiding her face once again.
Everypony’s jaw dropped at the sudden bursts of intelligence coming from the usually arrogant and uncaring cyan pegasus. Twilight was the most surprised, never having known that of all the ponies in Equestria, Rainbow Dash knew science! It was a real shocker to everyone, including little Spike himself his eyes bulging in confusion at the smart outbursts. Twilight cleared her throat, “Yes okay, Pinkie, if you feel like you want to volunteer to go next, go on ahead. I’m pretty sure everypony else is either too scared to, or they just think they’re too good for it; I won’t mention any names thought, Rarity.” Twilight said giggling, getting a disgusted look from Rarity; as she turned prissily setting off a chain reaction of everypony’s eyes turning right to her.
“Allllright! ALL RIGHT EVERYPONY, LET’S DOO THIIISSS! PPPPIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNKKKKKKKKAAAMMMMMMIIIIIINNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAA DDDIIIIIIIIAAAANNNNNNEEEEEEE PIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!” She yelled bouncing over happily to the area where they’d set up for testing, Twilight shooting a nervous look at the eccentric pink mare who was happily bouncing around. “COME ON, FOR SCIENCE!” she yelled as she covered her face with white make-up she’d randomly pulled out of thin air (for some reason, Pinkie can do that.) and rubbed it under her eyes and giggling.
Twilight sighed and shot the magical stream hitting the device head on, but this gave a completely different reaction. Instead of just turning the device on, it made Pinkie start to levitate and the messy workplace was blasted with a sudden gust of air; the chilled air enveloping the whole room like the cold grasp of death’s very fingers. With a sudden burst of light and magic, the whole room turned into a vacuum; the very air getting sucked out into oblivion. With another sudden burst of light, the girls disappeared from the room, Spike included; all of them crossing a border that shouldn’t have been crossed by anyone. The world they’d left melted behind them, and everything exploded into a dimensional portal that thrusted the seven into a whole other reality; and, a whole other world.
