Responsibilities
Chapter 16: Chapter 15: Responsibilities
Previous Chapter Next ChapterI open the door, and pick up the crying infant. She bawls for a few minutes, and then finally stops, having fallen back into a peaceful sleep.
I place the butter Pegasus back into her crib, and tuck a strand of pink hair behind her ear. She's so adorable when she sleeps like this: wrapped up in her own wings and her tail, snuggling up against the cyan Pegasus next to her. The cyan Pegasus in question is sleeping on her back, kicking at the air repeatedly in her little baby dreams. I smile, deciding that I love being a parent.
But, of course, a moment of philosophy crashes upon me like a violent wave, wiping away my immaturity, and calling forth my experiences and thoughts to create a moment of pure wisdom, during which I see the world as it truly is.
I ask myself: is this really all that being a parent is about? Enjoying how cute my children are?
No, certainly not. Being a parent also means roughing through the tough times, and helping the children come to terms with their own problems and reality. It means helping children to move past the cruelty of others, and learn to become truly happy individuals.
And I've been burdened with the responsibility of doing this with fourteen ponies.
Fourteen ponies who will never find anyone like them in this world; fourteen children that will always be shunned, mocked, and rejected because of their appearances.
Fourteen individuals that will always be alone, with the exclusion of their relatively small family. In the face of billions of humans, fourteen sole ponies is a rather small group.
And all they have is me. I doubt they will ever be accepted as they are, except for bronies and those who are wise. But, unfortunately, wise bronies are few and far between.
So, how will I make sure that their future is not as bleak as I realize it could be? How do I make sure that they find friends? How do I ensure that they will be part of any community besides their own? Should I keep them on the Internet, and restrict them from human contact?
Or should I make the world aware to their presence, so that they can accept and understand the ponies as truly human beings before they enter society?
Religious fanatics will definitely reject them, and Creationists will fucking freak out. So, those are two parties I must stay neutral with. Don't want to piss off the fucking Vatican.
So how would I do this? How would I introduce them to the world, while keeping them as neutral in all parties?
Perhaps I could use that Voice? The same Voice that changed Tratno into a much more mellow individual? Should I have it alter the mindset of everybody in the world? Or should I have it make the President of the United States help me in this matter?
Perhaps the latter. That would probably be easier, and more feasible. Besides, I would rather let people believe what they want to believe. Freedom of religion and shit, y'know?
If you wish for me to use your President to help your children, the Voice whispers into my ear, I can.
I smile. So, it's never far away. In fact, it's always watching...
Almost like a Guardian Angel.
So you wish for me to do so...It shall be done.
And, with that, the Voice goes quiet.
Several minutes later, my cellphone begins to ring, playing the theme song to the Legend of Zelda.
I pick up the phone, and Charles vehemently speaks from the other end.
"Obama's going public with it," he tells me. "He's going behind your back to gain favoritism, trying to seem like a truthful man."
I smile. "Only time will tell."
And I hang up, already booting up my laptop to go to ABC News.
However, I don't have to.
My phone rings, and this time, the sonata of the President's voice comes through the line.
