Jas is Back

I set the tray down on the table then sat down next to Fluttershy. She smiled at me sweetly as I handed her the plate with her iced bun. I'd made sure we didn't get any meat products like a chicken wrap or sausage roll. God knows how Fluttershy would have reacted. Well, how badly. I just had a gingerbread man, while Steven had a whole tuna crunch baguette. And a chocolate éclair for afterwards.

"Honestly Steven, you're the only one I know that can eat a whole tuna baguette, then eat an éclair to top it."

"Meh." Steven took a messy bite of the baguette and shrugged.

"You should see him eat, Fluttershy." I said as she took a petite bite out of her bun.

She giggled as a piece of tuna slid down Stevens chin. This atmosphere was nice: like we were all old friends meeting up for lunch. But it didn't stop me thinking about how Fluttershy was going to get home, back to Equestria. She didn't belong here.

I bit into the gingerbread man, taking off his leg as Fluttershy took another bite of her bun. Steven told a joke, but I wasn't listening. Fluttershy said she'd arrived after a blinding flash of light, in which she'd apparently been both transported, or teleported, to earth and turned into a human simultaneously.

I couldn't explain that scientifically. Equestria, from what I'd learnt, was a land of magic. That must have been what teleported here. If so, there was little I could do about it. I'd try, of course. And besides, I'm sure Fluttershy staying here for a while wouldn't bother Steven. It looked like he was having a great time. As far as I could tell, bronies had 'favourite ponies', and I wondered if Fluttershy was Stevens. I'd have to ask.

"Jamie?" Fluttershy asked.

I looked up. Apparently I'd missed something important. "Sorry, had my head in the clouds. What is it?" I asked, putting the half eaten gingerbread man down on the plate.

"I asked where Jas is." Steven said.

"Oh yeah, forgot to tell you. She's been visiting her parents for a couple of weeks over in Alaska." I said. "She's getting back about midnight tonight. In fact, she should be about halfway over the Atlantic now."

"So, how are you going to explain how Fluttershy got here?" Steven asked before taking another bite out of his baguette.

Crap. I hadn't thought about that.

"I don't know. I guess I'll have to try and convince her, but she was pretty sceptical when I told her over the phone. Fluttershy, I'll need your help to convince her." I turned to her, and she nodded.

"Of course I'll try and help. After all, you're being so kind, letting me stay with you and everything."

"And you can count me Jamie. A doctor's opinion always helps." Steven said through a mouthful of tuna, bread and lettuce.

"Thanks." I said gratefully.

"But Jas isn't one to believe what can't be explained by science." Steven commented unhelpfully.

"That's precisely why I need all the help I can get." I muttered, taking another bite of gingerbread.

"Sorry I'm a being a bother." Fluttershy whispered almost silently.

I turned to look at her. She was looking down, hiding behind her hair.

"Oh no Fluttershy, you're not a bother. Honest." I tried to reassure her. She nodded and smiled at me kindly through her hair, but I could tell she wasn't sure. And she was obviously homesick, or something of the like. All I could think of to get her back to Equestria was the standard fall back Let's hope the problem fixes itself which wasn't a very good fall back. But what could I do?

I sighed and ate the last bit of gingerbread.

Across from me Steven finished his baguette and moved onto his éclair and Fluttershy was halfway through her iced bun. She even had a trace of icing on the tip of her nose. I looked at my watch. It was 11:20 now, but I had most of the day left. Me and Fluttershy could probably go into town to the hairdressers and get her a wig. And I should probably get her an extra duvet to put on top of the camping bed, to make it a little more comfortable. I could get that at Argos and carry it back.

Steven told another bad joke that I didn't listen to, and Fluttershy laughed softly. Steven yawned loudly.

"Well, I'm gonna go in a minute. The sugar helps, but I've been up since seven last night. I can hardly keep my eyes open." Steven rubbed his eyes and blinked several times.

"You sure you can even walk home?" I asked.

Steven nodded. "Better go now though. Well," he clapped his hands together. "It was nice catching up with you Jamie. How longs it been? A couple of months?"

"About that." I confirmed.

"And it was nice meeting you Fluttershy, a true pleasure." Steven reached across and held out his hand. Fluttershy reached out gingerly and grasped it, letting Steven shake it up and down. "Or Florence as we might have to call you now. Hopefully I'll see you both again soon." he stretched and yawned again.

"Yep." I nodded in agreement.

"That sounds wonderful." Fluttershy smiled.

"Alright. See you both later." Steven turned and walked towards the door.

I placed the empty plates and Stevens empty Pepsi cup on a try and stood up. Fluttershy followed my lead.

"Where are we going now?" Fluttershy asked me as a placed the tray on the rack and threw the Pepsi cup in the bin.

"I thought we could go get you a wig, then get a duvet from Argos." I pushed open the café door.

"A duvet?" she followed me out of the bakery into the cloudy April day.

"A thick, comfy blanket. Don't you have them in Equestria?"

"Well, I think the fancy ponies in Canterlot do, and maybe Rarity, but I just have a blanket." Fluttershy said.

"Then you've been missing out. You slept in one last night, and I thought you should have another to go with the spare one, to soften the camping bed. It's not bad, but not like a proper bed."

"Oh, you don't have to do that for me." Fluttershy insisted.

"I insist. It's not every day you get teleported to another world and changed into a different creature. You need to be compensated."

She smiled and hugged me unexpectedly. "Thank you Jamie. You're too kind."

I smiled at her as she let me go. "It's perfectly alright. Now, how about your wig?" I led her into the hairdressers.

The door made a dinging noise as it hit an overhead bell, temporarily disturbing the radio playing through the speakers. It was pretty empty, only one person getting their hair cut. Jas had worked here for a bit, before getting a job at the spa. A hairdresser stepped.

"Hello Jamie! So nice to see you again!" it was Amy, one of Jas's friends.

"Hey Amy, nice to see you too. I just brought Florence here in to get her a wig. She's an, old friend."

Amy looked over my shoulder at Fluttershy, who was standing looking around the shop at the gels, scissors and other haircutting tools.

"Why's her hair pink?" Amy asked.

"She, uh, she wanted to dye it, but got the wrong colour, and it takes a while to wash out, so she wanted a wig until it does." that sounded legit to me at least.

"Hmm. Well, Florence, do you have any idea what colour or style wig you want?" Amy asked.

Fluttershy shook her head. Amy turned to me and whispered.

"Is she mute?"

"No, no, just shy." I explained.

"Alright. Well, Florence, do you want to come with me and have a look at some of the styles?" Amy asked.

"Ok." Fluttershy nodded.

I sat down in one of the chairs while Amy led Fluttershy to have a look at the selection.

I pushed the door shut behind me as Fluttershy walked in and sat down, taking off her shoes and new brunette wig.

"Oooh, my hooves- er, feet, really hurt."

"They will for a bit after you do a lot of walking." I said, putting the rolled up duvet down on the sofa next to her and stretched my arm. It wasn't heavy, but I'd been holding it under my arm for a quarter of an hour. "If you want, I could get a bowl of hot water for you to rest your feet in." I offered.

"Oh, no thank you." Fluttershy said and picked up the biology text book I had given her.

"Alright. I'll be setting up your bed if you need anything."

"Ok. Thank you again Jamie." she smiled at me.

I smiled back at her. "No problem." I grabbed the duvet with my other arm and walked down the hall.

I stepped into Fluttershy's room. The boxes were piled along the right wall, and I'd draped a red blanket over them, to at least make the room look less like a cupboard. The bed was against the left wall, and the spare duvet was laid out on top of it. Dropping the new duvet on the floor, I grabbed the side of the one on the bed and pushed it down between the wall and bed, then grabbed the other side and pushed it under the legs, so it would stay in place. Now Fluttershy could lie on top and have the new duvet over her.

I was interrupted by my thoughts by a meow from behind. Mits was sitting in the doorway, lazily flicking her tail against the door and watching me prepare Fluttershy's room. I held up my hand and she stepped forward, and then pressed her head against my palm.

Mits is an epic cat.

I stroked her a couple of times then ushered her away.

"Go on, go see Fluttershy." I urged her.

Mits stood and walked out, as though she really understood what I'd just said. I shrugged and grabbed the other duvet, ripping the plastic cover off.

Crap. The duvet was there, but it didn't have a cover. It would still be soft, but not as comfortable. I'd have to look through the boxes at the back for a spare. I crawled over and started going through them. As I tried to reach down the back of the top one, the pile, which I should mention is about 5 feet tall, shifted and fell. On me.

Damn it, I knew I should have piled them up better. My arm was stuck under the boxes, and I couldn't reach up high enough to dislodge the top box. They weren't crushing my arm, but it wasn't comfortable to say the least. I saw a pair of scissors glint from inside an open box.

Nope, I'd rather not do a 127 Hours Later.

"Fluttershy, could you come here a minute?" I shouted.

I heard her footsteps down the hall, in no hurry. She stepped into the doorway, and saw me sprawled on the floor with my arm trapped. "Oh my, what happened?" she rushed over and lifted the top box off.

"Uh, small box avalanche. Thanks." I thanked her as she lifted the last box and freed my arm.

"No problem. Is that my bed?" she asked, looking round at the camp bed.

"Yeah. Sorry it's not much. I was just looking for a duvet cover when the boxes fell."

"Oh, you didn't have to do that." Fluttershy insisted.

"And I insisted." I stood and stretched my arm.

"Thank you." Fluttershy said. I felt like she was thanking me for everything today.

"You don't have to keep thanking me Fluttershy." I said.

She blushed. "Ok. But I am grateful for everything you've done for me."

I smiled. "Well, I've got nothing else on my To Do list, except to meet Jas at the station at midnight, so I guess we can just hang out today if you want."

She gave me her trademark smile. "That sounds nice."

I turned off the bikes headlight and biked slowly towards the stations main entrance. The lights from the concourse were enough to show Jas standing near the roads edge in the dark, waiting for me. She heard the bikes engine and turned to smile at me.

I braked and took off my helmet as she walked towards me.

"Hey there handsome." she said.

"And who might you be?" I asked, holding the helmet under my arm. The engine ticked over.

"A girl looking for someone to take her home. So, where's my helmet?" she asked, walking up and hugging me.

I held her back and pecked her on the cheek. "Right here." I said, holding up my bag. I pulled her dark purple leather jacket and helmet out.

"Thanks." she pulled the jacket on and I put her blonde hair into a ponytail so I could put her helmet on for her.

She hopped and straddled the bike, grasping my waist and nuzzling the back of neck. I revved the engine and set off back towards the flat.

It didn't take long. Me and Jas made our way up the stairs as she told me tales from her trip in America. I opened the door as she giggled and saw Fluttershy waiting for us.

"Hello Jas. Jamie's told me a lot about you." Fluttershy smiled sweetly.

In the words of Newton: bollocks.
