Chapter 5: Gregg's

Gregg's

I grabbed Stevens arm and pulled him towards me before whispering in his ear.

"Stop saying she's the real deal, I'm having enough trouble believing she's fake already. And how could she be the 'real deal'?" I whispered loudly.

Steven shook his arm off me. "Why not? Like you said, it's not a head bump, drugs, insanity. What else would it be?"

"But it's not possible! Stuff like this doesn't happen!" I whispered, exasperated.

"That's probably what cave-men thought when they created fire, a mystical force that could hurt and warm, or before the Wright brothers. No-one thought it was possible to fly, but look at us now, there are thousands of planes, flying millions of people all over the world every day. Maybe, teleporting between dimensions is like that. There's always crackpot scientists saying it's possible."

I mulled over on this. He was appealing to my sense of logic, and it was working, god damn him. Maybe it was possible.

"So you're saying she's a hipster?" I smirked.

Steven punched me in the arm. "You know what I mean." we were interrupted by a buzz from Steven's computer. He looked, then turned back to speak to me at a normal volume.

"Look, I have other patients to attend to. I've just pulled a night shift, and I'm getting off in just under an hour. If you want, we can meet up at eleven and talk some more. How about it?" Steven sat down at his desk and filled out a form.

"Alright, I guess. Honestly, this is giving me a headache. Wanna meet at Gregg's?" I asked.

Steven nodded. "Sure. Eleven o'clock."

I turned to Fluttershy and smiled reassuringly. "Alright Fluttershy."

"Are we going?" she asked.

I nodded and helped her to her feet. "Yep."

"Ok. Thank you Dr Steven." she thanked him.

He looked up and smiled. "It was no problem Fluttershy. And please, call me Steven."

"Ok, Steven." she smiled at him again.

As she and I walked out of his office, he called out something.

"Oh, Jamie! Say hello to Jas for me!"

"Will do!" I called back. I turned to Fluttershy. She was looking at that same poster again, the one showing the female body.

"You know Fluttershy, if you enjoy looking at that poster so much, I could probably buy one." I said as I picked up the helmets.

"Oh, I couldn't ask you to do that." she said.

I smiled. She really was the real deal. "Don't worry, it's no problem. In fact, I'm pretty sure I have a book or something like that in the spare room. I'll be sure to have a look for you." I stepped up to the automatic doors. She grabbed my arm again as they opened, but didn't jump back this time. I looked back at her and raised an eyebrow. Then she blushed and I'm fairly sure she made a *squee* noise.

I didn't ask.

As I helped her get her helmet on, she asked me something, but I didn't get to hear her properly through the helmet. I flipped her visor up for her.

"Pardon?" I asked.

"I said, who's Gregg?" she said.

I laughed a little bit. Of course, it was such a common phrase around here that I hadn't thought to explain it to her. "It's a place, sort of like a mix between a café and a bakery."

She blinked once. "Like Sugarcube Corner?" she asked.

I blanked. What? Oh yeah! From the show, Sugarcube corner was a bakery. "Yeah. Except Gregg's isn't made of gingerbread." I grinned at her. "Ready to go?"

She looked worriedly at the bike, but nodded. "Uh-huh."

"Alright then." I pushed her visor down and straddled the bike. As she sat down behind me I started the engine and kicked up the stand. I rolled the bike forward and Fluttershy gripped my waist tightly. I started thinking. Until I met Steven in an hour and a quarter, there wasn't anything to do. I may as well go back to the flat. It looked like Fluttershy would be staying longer than I first thought, and my flat was the only place she could stay. As Jas would be getting back tonight, I couldn't give her the bed again.

I smiled. Jas would be back tonight. Then I frowned. I'd have to convince her Fluttershy was real. I went back to planning. I could set up the spare room. It was mostly empty, just a few boxes against one wall and a wardrobe. I even had a camping bed in there behind the boxes. It wouldn't be much, but at least she'd have somewhere to stay. I explained the plan as we walked up the stairs to the flat.

"…sorry if it doesn't sound that, well, comfortable." I said, opening the door to my flat.

"Oh, I don't mind. Especially as you're already giving me somewhere to stay, and helping me, and feeding me." she said. She smiled at me, truly grateful.

"It's no problem Fluttershy. Now, if you want you can sit and watch some TV." I held out a hand towards the sofa.

"TV? Is that the moving picture frame?"

"Uh, yeah." I nodded realizing what she meant.

"It's amazing." she knelt in front of it. "Moving pictures. It's magic."

"Not quite. It's technology." I laughed and walked down the hall to the spare room. Before walking in, I threw my leather jacket and helmet through my bedroom door, onto the bed. Looking back into the spare room, I realized a box had tipped over, spilling the contents over the floor. Why does stuff like this always happen when you need to do something? At least I could see the camping bed. And there was my old biology textbook. I picked it up and blew the dust off it before taking it out to Fluttershy.

"Here you go Fluttershy. It's a biology textbook from when I was in secondary school. Might be a bit old, though."

She stood up and took it from me, smiling. "Thank you. I'm sure it will be fine."

I smiled back at her and went back to the spare room. It was the same size as the bedroom, maybe a tiny bit smaller. I righted the fallen box and packed everything back in, before pulling the camping bed from behind the stack of boxes at the back of the room. I say boxes, but a lot of the crap in there wasn't in boxes. As well as the camping bed, there was a spare duvet, an old tent and of course the wardrobe where me and Jas kept our spare clothes.

After ten minutes, I'd made no headway into preparing the bed for Fluttershy. I'd lost the instructions, and couldn't find them in any of the boxes. I was sitting cross legged on the floor, tugging on the folding legs, but they were refusing to open.

"Come on, poxy bed frame. Unfold!" I muttered through clenched teeth. I pulled it, but simply trapped my hand in it. "Damn it!" I realized someone was watching me.

"Oh, hey Fluttershy." the bed jangled as I tried to raise my hand in greeting, but it was still stuck between the bed's leg and body. Fluttershy was standing half in the door frame, sort of hiding from view.

"If you don't mind me saying, I think you have to pull that lever." she pointed at the bed.

I turned it over and saw a small lever, with a green pad on the end. I would have face-palmed, had my hands not been full. With my right hand trapped and my left hand holding up the bed, I couldn't get it.

"Uh, I can't quite reach that. Could you get it?" I asked.

"O-ok." Fluttershy walked over and knelt down on the floor. She reached over me and pulled on the lever. There was a bang as the legs came loose and hit the floor. I pulled my hand back and put the bed down. There was a red mark across the back of my hand from the metal bar.

"Doesn't that hurt?" Fluttershy asked. She reached towards my hand, but I waved her off.

"It's fine." I wasn't lying. It hurt a little, but I could deal with it. I was too annoyed anyway.

Damn invisible lever. I shook my hand to ease some of the pain and looked at the clock on the wall. 10:00.

"Alright Fluttershy. I'll finish putting the bed up, then we can meet Steven at Gregg's." I looked at the bed. "You wouldn't happen to know what I have to do know?"

She giggled. "I think you lock the legs in place." she pointed at the bed.

I looked at it. There was a simple guide on the underside of the bed, with pictures and instructions. It had been concealed by a sleeping bag, which had been held in place by the bed's legs. This time I did face-palm.

"Would you mind helping me with the rest of it, seeing as I'm an incompetent fool?"

"Um, ok." she smiled at me.

"Ok. Now, according to this I have to secure the legs in place like this…"

I led Fluttershy down the pedestrianized road, but had to keep stopping to let her peer into shop windows at the displays of clothes and other items. Currently she was staring into the Argos window at the lawn mower poster taking up the whole display. She was getting a few odd stares, but that wasn't surprising given her pink hair and odd behaviour.

"Come on… Shy, we'll miss Steven." if I called her 'Fluttershy', the stares would no doubt get worse. 'Shy' was bad enough if I'm honest.

"Ok." she dragged herself away from the window. Because the town centre was so close, we'd walked there. It had only taken five minutes, but as we started down the pedestrianized road, Fluttershy had been complaining of aching legs. I guess if she really had been teleported here and changed into a human, she would still be getting used to her new body.

I shook my head and smiled. I actually believed she had once been a pony. Well, Steven was right, it was the most logical explanation. I sighed and looked at Fluttershy. She was walking alongside me, looking up at the small skyline about a mile away. I tapped her on the shoulder, and she looked around quickly.

"Here we are Shy. Gregg's." I stepped up and pushed open the door to the café, and the smell of baking wafted out on a blanket of warm air. As we stepped in I realized just how chilly it had been. I looked around quickly, and saw Steven sitting at a booth table, in the corner away from the other customers, drinking Pepsi.

"Hey, Steven!" I called quietly, so as to not annoy the half a dozen other people here. He looked over and grinned at me and Fluttershy.

"Alright Jamie? And hello to you Fluttershy."

"Hello Steven." she said.

I sat down across from Steven, and Fluttershy sat next to me. Steven was staring at her as though she was some sort of rare treasure.

"Alright, straight to the point." he started, keeping quiet, presumably so others couldn't hear him. "Fluttershy, you were once a pony, correct?" he steepled his fingers at her. Apparently he had also taken to believing her.

"Yes." she nodded.

"Well, you're in another world, a world called Earth. As Jamie's probably explained, we, and for the moment you are as well, a human. Now, there something I- well, both me and Jamie," he looked at me and nodded towards her. "Need to tell you. In this world, there is a television show – you know what they are?" Fluttershy nodded, so Steven continued. "Well, there's a television show called My Little Pony: Friendship is magic…"

Oh god, this is going to take some time…

10 minutes and several Pepsi's later…

"So, in this world, I'm in a cartoon?" Fluttershy asked.

Steven and I both nodded. "And so is the whole of Equestria." he added.

Fluttershy looked lost, almost shell shocked. "How do I get back? I need to find my friends…"

"I don't know Fluttershy. Me and Steven will do everything we can to help." I said, then turned and whispered to him. "Maybe that wasn't the best way to tell her."

"She needed to know, and sooner rather than later, when some hard-core fan realizes." he whispered back, before talking normally. "And that's the next part. Now, Fluttershy, I'm sure you've realised that pink hair, and, well, your name, aren't exactly normal in this world."

She looked up at him and nodded.

"Well, don't look now, but it's not exactly subtle." he said.

"Oh?" she asked.

I joined in by nodding. "That's why people have been staring at you Fluttershy."

"So what do I do?" she asked, looking around at the other customers.

"Well, I have a small idea." Steven said. Fluttershy and I both looked at him. "It's your name and hair that stand out, so, you'll have to change them to avoid attention."

Fluttershy looked aghast. "On no! I could never change my name, or my mane- hair colour! I don't want to change who I am, not for anything! Like that one time, when I was a model because Rarity wanted me to, I hated it!"

Steven and I looked at each other. If she wasn't the real deal, nothing would be.

"Alright." he said quietly, thinking over what she said. "What if, we don't change the colour of your hair or your name, but pretend they're different while you're around other people that don't know you're a pony?"

"Steven, how are we supposed to pretend her hair is a different colour?" I asked.

"A wig maybe? It would be better than a dye." Steven shook his head.

"And what about my name?" Fluttershy asked.

"We can just pretend it's something different. How about Francesca?" Steven said.

I shuddered. Francesca was the name of one of my ex-girlfriends, that I now believe to be one of Satan's minions, and Steven knew that. "No." I said simply.

He smirked and Fluttershy just looked curiously at me.

"What about Florence then?" Steven asked.

"I like that name." Fluttershy smiled.

"Sounds nice." I nodded. "So, to avoid awkwardness in public, we'll call you Florence."

"Or Flo, for short." Steven added.

"Are you sure you're ok with this Fluttershy?" I asked.

She smiled. "Oh yes, I understand, and Florence sounds like a wonderful name."

"Alright 'Flo', while we're at Gregg's, you want to taste some of Earth delicacies?" I asked, pointing to the counter of pastries. "My treat."

She beamed at me and nodded.

A thanks to ChancellorPuddinghead for Fluttershy's new name and mane/hair ideas
