For as long as we know, the Crystal Empire has been protected by Twilight's brother and sister, Shining Armour and Cadence. However, during a freak magic flare, Both Cadence and Shining Armour get reduced to foals. Fortunately, Twilight is unaffected and she and Flash are now responsible for the protection and care of Shining Armour and Princess Cadence.
