Chapter 1: Feelings And Thoughts.
Twilight lay there in the cool grass right in front of foggy bottom bog. The sun shining in her purple hair with streams of pink. She stared at the water for several minutes, pondering things only she would find of importance while she occasionally jotted down some notes on her small notebook with her unicorn magic. But another type of energy rocketed through her body at that moment other than unicorn magic. It seemed to be a strange mix of sadness and anger. Those two emotions kept a steady battle with each other. Those emotions didn’t seem to perturbed her thoughts. In fact, she felt as thought her feelings and what she was writing down went hoof in hoof.
Those minutes stretched into hours as she deeply concentrated at the tadpoles swimming in the water, the ripples they produced seemed almost hypnotizing in a way. The way they wriggled at the sign of any movement looked almost cute in a way.
She slowly started to close her eyes, with each blink making her seemingly more sleepy. It took some time herself to notice that she was starting to occasionally close her eyes at different intervals.
“whoa, come on now twilight sparkle, get a hold of yourself!” she said to herself as she gently slapped her forehead with her hoof to keep her from dozing off. She set back concentrating back once again to the tadpoles. Her concentration was now more screwy than ever thanks to her mind setting back to the same thought; sleeping.
Probably the only thing that kept her awake were those still lingering feelings of sadness and anger. Despite how powerful those feelings were inside her, she felt extremely groggy. She wrote down something on her notebook and, as if on purpose, scooted over closer to the edge of the pond. Now her hair would be touching the water anytime she decided to lay down. Now, finally ready, she closed her eyes and waited for it to happen. That one thought that, until now, seemed bliss.
She woke up with a startle to find her whole face soaking wet and felt as if her lungs haven’t been receiving oxygen in ages.
“my head must’ve slinked and been underwater in the pond, that was what probably woke me up” she thought to herself while heavily breathing for the precious oxygen she so desired. Twilight looked around, her eyes slowly adjusting to the low amount of light. She used her hoofs to try to wipe away any excess water.
It was surprisingly cold for the usual spring nights
“now where was it?” she mumbled to herself, barely aware to where she was even supposed to be heading. The moonlight Luna so thankfully provided today was her only source of guidance in this dreary night. Despite how bright it was, she couldn’t seem to find her way back home.
“eh, whatever” she said, finally giving up to the power of after-sleep and decided she should teleport back home.
She took a “power stance” as she readied her spell. Her horn started to glow, faintly at first. she started to muster all her power into this one simple task.
“come on twilight, you have done this many times before!” she muttered to herself angrily As she screwed up her face in concentration. Why was this spell taking so long? Or in this case, not working at all?
Suddenly she felt a tingle in her horn. A sensation she had felt many times before after successfully completing a spell. Instead of going back home, instead of feeling as thought she was being stretched into thin spaghetti, her horn simply emitted an eerie glow that barely even gave light.
“huh?” said twilight dumbfounded as to what just happened.
“no! I wanted a teleportation spell, not a measly lighting spell!”
She attempted time and time again the same spell with similar results. Twilight just could not understand how her magic rejecting this one spell. She tried many different spells to see what was wrong with her. Morphing spell? Check. invisibility spell? Check. The list went on and on. Not until the sixteenth spell check did she come to the painful conclusion that she couldn’t teleport, or do any magic whatsoever.
The moon now seemed to be almost exactly in the middle of the star-filled sky. She stared up at the sky and noticed herself that it seemed a little past midnight.
“oh, come on! All that time I was spell checking I could’ve already found my way back home!” she looked around still trying to get her bearings of her surroundings.
“wait, wasn’t it…” said the now-fully awoken twilight as she pointed her head in a direction south of where she took her nap.
She strained her eyes to see if there was any kind of clue as to where was ponyville. Sure enough she saw small lights twinkling in the musty star-filled night.
“aha! I knew reading that survival book for camping wasn’t a waste of time! Silly spike and he thought…” suddenly twilight realized how long she had actually been away. All of her friends must have been worried sick! Oh, poor spike he must be looking everywhere for me!
“Lets see, what was the last thing I told him…” she tried to remember but she only drew a big blank. As if the her memories were being shrouded by something more powerful…
“ah well, he’s old enough, he knows were to get food. Besides I will just clear everything up when I go back to ponyville!” she said as she trotted happily but cautiously over to ponyville.
“come to think of it, cant remember what was the last thing I said to fluttershy , or applejack, or anypony for that matter. How odd. All that studying and napping took a really big bite from my memory. Well, that seems to be the only logical solution…” said the purple pony as she continued to walk to where the lights were.
Deep inside, she felt that her mind was playing tricks; that she was trying to forget all this on purpose, for good or for the better. But why would she try to do that? They are her best friends, anytime spent with them was a happy memory! Well she did feel pretty angry at something, but she simply couldn’t put her hoof on what that was. Maybe she was just cranky from being awoken in such a diabolical way. (being almost drowned, that is)
“Maybe” she said. She had this strong feeling that the reason she forgot all this was because of her the slightly cranky/angry nature she was right now . But she kept lying to herself saying that it was just all just a strange coincidence. Maybe she just happened to lose her memory the same day she decided to study by the pond. Well then again she thought the same thing with pinkie pie’s pinkie senses… she decided to look at her notebook to see if anything she wrote down sparked a memory inside here head. She felt around her hoof for her notebook. It wasn’t there! Being that she didn’t have it, she kept asking herself for the longest time;
“what did I write in that notebook?” she thought to herself. She even forgot to bring it! How forgetful of her! Well whatever it was, it can’t be more important than telling everypony were she was.
All this time she spent pondering these thoughts that still lingered in her head, she found out how close she was to ponyville. She had already come up to a residence close to where she lived.
“thank goodness!” she said, exasperated and just anxious to get to her nice, warm bed. Just thinking about it made her feel cold. VERY cold. Come to think of it, she wasn’t sweating, much less even warm from the exercise she just got from her admittedly long walk. At this point she really didn’t pay much attention.
She soon spotted her house/ library beaming with light as bright as…
“wait, WHAT?” she said to herself. “It is midnight and my lights are on? Maybe… oh, wait, they must be looking for me!” she said, calming down from the major shock that just jolted her body seconds ago.
she opened the door gently with her hoof, as to not alarm anypony that saw her.
“don’t worry everypony, I’m here I’m here.” she said as smoothly as possible. Every one of her friends looked over where she was standing. She expected to be flooded with hugs or to just be received with at least a smile. Nope, all seven (including spike) just stared wide-eyed at her.
“what? I was lost, not dead!” she joked, laughing and her own joke. Not even pinkie, a pony who seemed to laugh at everything stayed to be solely concentrated on her. Or, was it the door behind her?
She craned her neck so she would be able to see what they were so intently looking at. Behind her was a small table with seven cups of very cold-looking tea, and the door right behind it. What kind of novelty was there to be had with these three simple items?
“oh, mah, apples…” said applejack who seemed to be the most scared one of the bunch (yes, even more than fluttershy.)
“d-d-d-did you see the, the…” said rainbow dash
“THE DOOR OPENED BY ITSELF!” yelled rarity at the top of her lungs.
“what?! What kind of cruel joke is this?!” yelled twilight angrily at them.
“oh, they aren’t imagining.” said a cold, lifeless voice somewhere in the room.
“wh-who are you? And what have you done to me?!” questioned twilight at what seemed to be empty space.
“oh, how rude of me. Allow me to introduce myself.” in a flash of blinding light appeared pony with a long black cloak with a hood that covered all of his body. Most of its body was recognizable (to say the least) except for the head. The shadow produced by his hood made it seem as if he had no head to begin with.
“I, as they like to refer to me, am the pony most other ponies fear to meet. I am!” it said with a dramatic tension in his voice that was barely noticeable. Every word it said seemed to have the same, lifeless tension and cold white expression .
“get on with it!” twilight said, now focusing solely at the hooded figure appearing before her.
“I am what very few ponies seek, yet everpony else seems to fear or try to cheat!”
“don’t go spitting you’re mumbo-jumbo at me! You are talking to somepony that bested discords riddle! Have at it!” she said as she began to wind up a head butt.
“oh but there is no riddle to be had in anything I have said. It all depends at which point of the scope you have me looking through. And it seems you were looking at the wrong end.”
“I am Death.”
