PROLOGUE

Before the alicorns, before Celestia or Luna, or even life in the world existed, there were only four elements;

WAR

PEACE

DEATH

LIFE

Each balanced the other out, so no one being (since, at this time there was no life, thus we do not know they’re actual forms) could overpower and overthrow the other, much like Fire, Wind, Earth, and Water. It was believed that Peace and Life were Female, while Death and War were male.

Life and Peace decided to take this desolate universe, to create worlds, and add color, plants, wildlife and such upon the world. The dominant life they called “Pony” and they were peaceful creatures, and let them name everything else, for life and peace were tired. as Life and Peace went to rest, War and Death decided that there was not balance, and them being the major roles of Balance, created war between the ponies, and death of many.

The constant death had stopped, When Life and Death met, and together Created the alicorns (which in effect made them the great great grandparents of Celestia and Luna)

Everything calmed down after a century, and they all disappeared, though subtly moving things to a better direction. Life was present, through the birth of others and creation of new plants. Peace was present for there was no more war. War was almost destroyed, through lack thereof. Death was ever present to all, for everything had to die eventually.
But to keep balance, every century or so, when the new found Equestria least expected, one of them (upon agreement) a (un)lucky subject will be born, with complications, a curse, and a fixed name. The ‘Cursed’ held one of the Elements of Balance inside of them. Said element will stay with them until that pony dies, then it will choose a new host.
When the element decides to show itself (in the case of life and peace) it is easy. They layback and help the pony when needed. In the case of War and Death, it is ‘hostile take over’ breaking the pony’s mind until they can’t think, act or do anything, then take full control of their body, and wreak havoc upon Equestria. Though upon War and Death, they do not do so until the pony finds their secret talent (which depends on the pony, like the cutie marks)

The immortals have a choice; break the pony's will, or live in the same body as a huge bi-polar kind of disorder. To ensure the balance, every 100 years a different Element of Balance takes a pony, they have strict rules as to what they can and can't do. Lets say that War decided to show on up, (in example lets call his 'subject' Fire Heart)

As he is in said pony's body he can only do what he is balanced to do; create conflict. From the smallest challenge to actual war. He however cannot break the rules (you'll read more upon the rules later). One of the rules being: One cannot travel outside of one's expertise or reputation. By reputation, War is meant to (once again) cause conflict. Death has a reputation, Grim reaper, father time, fallen angels, etc.

The most recent names the Elements have took on, each reflect the Element inside of the pony, which only one of the words in the name holds the curse.

Life: Peaceful Endeavor
Peace: Forever Kind

War: Iron Heart
Death: Solar Decent

In Equestria’s present time, the last known embodiment of the Elements is...
Life: everything being created, whether fillies being born, to the biggest tree in Equestria dropping seeds, Life is ever present.

Peace: Currently known as what you feel after death (hence, Rest In Peace)
War: last heard of after Celestia and Luna were created

Death: last known as Solar Decent, who turned Luna into Nightmare moon, and turned her against Celestia.

Death and Life are the only Elements that are working every second of every day.

There are statues dedicated to all four them in the Canterlot Gardens, a few meters south-west from Discord’s statue

And now... Our story begins...
