Limbo

The sounds of birds chirping and tree's blowing in the wind could be heard all around the giant, dark forest. No other sounds emitted from the desolate place, just the wind and the birds. This time, however...there was the sound of footsteps. Those footsteps belonged to a little child; a boy, to be precise. We will just call him The Nameless boy, for now.

The Nameless little boy was wandering around the evil forest, as he had done many times before. He was forced to revisit this place for eternity. No one actually knew why...even he didn't know. He had faced a giant spider, kids who were out to kill him and mind controlling larvae. It was not a safe place to be...especially for a young child.

He had died countless times over and over again. Every time he did, he came back as if nothing had happened. He didn't understand why this was happening or what he had done to deserve this, but it was tough. He had to do this. Over and over. When he first woke up in the forest, he wanted to find his sister as that was the only loved one he could remember. In the end, he did find her. She was standing next to a grave, mourning. She eventually put a teddy bear and flowers on the grave. But when this had happened the first time, as he had seen his sister doing this same thing every time he had to go through the forest and everywhere else again to get here, he recognized that bear. Its scruff markings, cuts, fluff that was hanging out and its left eye that was missing looked exactly like his old bear. It was his old bear. He eventually realised that there was a reason why she was doing this.

She was mourning his death.

He never did understand how he was dead, as he felt alive. Sort of. He guessed that he had gone to a spiritual realm or something. But he never could try to get around this repeating pattern…he was forced to come back here every time he got to the end.

The first time that this happened, after he saw his sister...he blacked out and woke up at the EXACT same spot that he was in when he first arrived in the dark forest. This happened every time he got to the end of his journey to find his sister. He realised after a few times doing this that he would never get away from this place.

One thing he didn't realise is that a certain powerful equine had been watching him for quite a while now.

"Alright Luna, I will be back shortly."

"Okay sister. Be careful."

Two sisters were about to part, as they always did at this time of day. One would go raise the moon and the other one would watch over the realms for part of the night to make sure everything was alright.

The realms were the different dimensions and galaxies in the universe. Celestia, goddess of the sun, had to do this to check that nothing was going wrong in the dimensions that could affect Equestria. Equestria was the planet that she ruled, along with her sister, Luna, whose job was to raise the moon at night.

One day when Celestia was doing her routinely check of the realms, she noticed something odd. When she was about to finish checking all of the realms, another one appeared out of nowhere.

"Strange. A new realm doesn't appear that fast."

She went to investigate this strange occurrence. When she did check it, she saw that a little creature that she didn't recognise from anywhere was alone in a very large, unnaturally dark forest. The trees were bigger than any normal tree she had seen before and everything was either black or white. Finding this out of place, she decided to watch what would happen with the little creature. He was walking on a path through the forest, evading all sorts of traps and hazards. After a while, when Celestia thought the creature was safe, she spotted something in the corner of her eye. She looked at it properly and saw that it was a giant arachnid of some sort. She had seen spiders before, but not one of this size. She continued to watch the little creature and see if he would react to the giant insect. What she saw shocked and frightened her.

The spider impaled the creature on one of its legs, causing the leg to go through the creatures head and down to an area between its legs. It chucked the creature off of its leg as it died quickly, leaving splodges of blood on the ground.

"Mother of..."

The poor thing had looked defenseless. It had no chance against the giant arachnid. Before she could finish her sentence, she saw something to the left of her which startled her. It turned out to be the little creature. It had just been brutally killed by the arachnid, yet it had come back to life as if nothing had happened. The spider was nowhere to be seen. It had just disappeared into thin air when the creature came back. The creature’s body had disappeared as well, only for it to come back alive at an earlier point in the forest. After a few seconds, the creature started yet again walking on to the path. However, it was the same path that had led to the spider.

Celestia was confused and felt horrible for witnessing the death of the tiny creature. She put a hoof to her chin and thought. "Why did the creature come back after death? Why did the spider kill it? Why is the little creature walking towards the spider again?" She had so many questions and not enough time to answer them all. It then hit her.

"What if...he has to do this over and over? That would explain why he came back after the spider killed him and also why the creature is walking towards the spider again."

She guessed what was going to happen next and she didn't want said thing to occur again. "Oh no....I need to do something...and fast." Before she could question her decision, she flew down into the realm at high speed, causing the trees to be hit by the big gust of wind that had followed Celestia's flight path.

She landed and saw the little creature and the giant spider in front of her. The spider was getting ready to kill the creature, in the same way, again. "Oh no you don't, you foul demon!" As the spiders leg was about to impale the creature, the spider flew into a faraway tree. It didn't get up.

The nameless boy had just witnessed something that even after all this, he would have not expected to see. A white horse of some kind with wings and horn had swooped down and kicked the spider straight in the face, sending it flying into a tree. He didn't know if it was dead or not. He didn't have time to think about it as the strange horse thing turned around to face him and looked at him with a worried expression on its face. It then did something that seemed even more impossible than this place. It spoke to him.

"Are you okay?"

The boy just stared at the horse. The horse put its hoof on his shoulder. The boy looked at the hoof, then back at the horse and then pushed the hoof off. He began to run in the opposite direction. He didn't know what this thing was, but he couldn't trust anything in this place. Especially a talking horse.

Celestia had put her hoof on the creatures shoulder to try and comfort it, but to no avail. It looked at her hoof, pushed it off and ran away. She was giving chase as the creature didn't run too fast, but it certainly didn't run slow. She attempted to make it stop by shouting at it.

"Please! Stop! I'm not going to hurt you, I promise!"

It didn't stop. Instead, it ran further into the woods as Celestia gave chase. The creature was gaining speed as it started running away even faster. After a few minutes of constant chasing, she lost the creature. It had run into some part of the forest that was even darker than the rest of the area. She started searching, looking behind every tree trying to find it.

"Where did it g..."

Before she could finish, she heard a snapping sound to the right of her. Like some sort of trap. She followed the direction of where the sound had come from. She looked behind one of the biggest trees she had seen yet and what she saw shocked her to the core. She found the creatures body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Its head was missing. She found its head close to where the body was. She also saw a mechanized trap, which she guessed was the sound that she had heard. It'd been so strong that it had decapitated the poor thing. Celestia looked at the creature’s body and shook her head.

"What a horrible way to..."

A sudden sound of footsteps behind made her spin around, only to see the creature there. She turned back around to look at the body, but it had disappeared. The only thing left was the trap still on the floor. She turned to face the creature but noticed that he had started running away again. She started galloping after it and kept trying to say that she meant no harm. It was no use. The creature obviously wasn't listening or just didn't trust her, which was understandable considering it'd obviously never seen her before.

After a while of this, the creature vanished yet again. "How does it keep disappearing like that?! It's like it knows where every path leads." Then again, that could be the truth. I mean, she didn't know how long it'd been here. It could have been here for years, constantly dying over and over for all she knew.

She came across a steep hill. Out of nowhere, she started to hear footsteps everywhere. She was actually getting worried. "I knew I shouldn't have tried to save that creature. I don't know what lies in this forest. It could be something that can even kill me. And even if I did save it, it might mess with the laws of this realm…" After her quick thought, she finally realised where the footsteps were coming from. She looked up to see shadowy figures, standing there and clearly watching her from on the top of the hill. They seemed to have some sort of weapon in their hands. She was sure they were spears. She noticed that they looked a bit like the creature she was trying to save, only taller and skinnier by the looks of it. Maybe she could reason with these beings?

They suddenly readied their spears and pointed them towards her.

Reasoning was out of the question.

Before she could even try to get away from the shadowy beings, spears were being thrown directly at her.

"Buck."

She tried to conjure up a magical shield, but after multiple attempts, she pieced something together.

Her magic didn't work in this realm.

She decided to use her wings and fly away. By luck, she barely missed the spears being chucked at her and flew higher into the sky, trying to find the creature as she could now see over the trees.

"Where are you?"

She scanned the area.

Celestia had been looking for ages for the creature, but she had come across nothing except for dead creatures and more traps. She had also seen the giant spider again, although this time, it seemed to be going to a cave. Maybe that was its home? She didn't care, as long as it wasn't going after anything such as the creature.

Eventually, she decided to give up searching. Why had this creature piqued her interest anyway? Just because she saw it die and come back doesn't mean she should try and save it right?

She tried not to question her reasons as she was heading back to Equestria. Well, she would have headed back if it wasn't for the black silhouette she had just seen from the sky that was running quite fast through the forest.

The boy had been running for ages to try and get away from that horse thing. He might have been only a kid, but after dying time and time again, he figured out that he couldn't trust anything in this place. He suddenly fell backwards as a big gust of wind hit him. What followed was the horse thing landing in front of him. It trotted up to him.

Now, he was going to try and get away...again. But, he didn't see any point. Even if he didn't trust anything in this place, he started to not care about dying again. Sure, it was the most painful and horrible thing he had ever experience, but he knew that he'd just come back. So, as a result of not caring, he let it trot up to him. It eventually spoke again.

"You did not have to run, you know. I said that I would not hurt you. From what I've seen of this realm so far, I can see why you would not trust something like me. But please.....try and trust me? I will not hurt you."

The horse extended its hoof out to the boy. He wondered what it was trying to do until he saw that it was trying to help him up. He grabbed onto its hoof and it pulled him up to his feet. Now, as I said before, he would have obviously tried to run away if it was anything else.

But if this thing would have wanted him dead, it would have probably done it already...or at least tried to. It spoke again.

"Please...come with me. I can get you out of here."

It was strange enough that it even talked. Nothing ever spoke here, even him. It was always eerily quiet in this place. After a few minutes of silence, he decided to go with it. I mean, what did he have to lose? All that this thing could do is kill him...and he'd been killed enough already to know what death is like. It motioned for him to get on its back. He complied and got on its back, waiting for the horse to do whatever it was going to do to him. He still didn't trust this thing anymore than he did the kids who had killed him with the blow darts and the booby traps. But...it hadn't tried to kill him yet, which was better than anything he had found in this forest.

"Alright. Here we go. Hang on tight."

Before he knew it, the horse flapped its wings and flew at lightning speed towards the sky. He didn't know what it was doing, but it seemed to be doing something else apart from attacking him.

He hung on for dear life and hoped for something to happen other than his death.
