Twilight stepped about her library, a book in hoof, worrying over what she was about to do. The book's title was "The Nervous Systems of Ponies" and she had read it at least ten times by now, preparing for what she had to do. Even after going over the plan a dozen times she still felt unsure. She had to preserve harmony but was this the way to do it? Even after planning the whole thing out, Twilight was still having second thoughts.
Twilight paced nervously, justifying what she was going to do by remembering the attacks of Discord, Queen Chrysalis, and Nightmare Moon.
"Where did harmony go?"
She sang sadly, truly not knowing what had happened in her perfect world. The closer she looked, the more she saw the corruption everywhere, like a poison killing the tree that was Equestria.
"Am I its escape?"
Twilight questioned to the air, temporarily convincing herself that she was the vessel that harmony had chosen. The feeling broke fairly quickly and went back to depression and fear.
"All chaos I must erase"
Twilight said to her hooves, briefly wondering if she was actually the vessel for chaos instead of harmony. No, she couldn't be!
"Can harmony be saved?"
Twilight said with resentment in her veins over how chaotic Equestria had gotten. By doing this she also felt resentment for herself as she felt responsible. She was an Element of Harmony, a guardian of Equestria, yet she had let it fall into chaos. With fear and hatred roiling together, the hallucinations came back. Shadows of multiple shapes and colors, only sharing black grins and eyes that dripped blood.
"Assassin, murderer, monster"
They hissed as they surrounded Twilight, repeating the words just to make them hurt more. Twilight feebly swatted at them but her hoof just went through them, leading them into spine chilling laughter. The wraiths disappeared briefly but she knew they'd be back.
"Friends, I need you now"
Twilight sobbed, tears echoing in the empty library as the unicorn cried. In her grief she had forgotten that she had sent them away so she could do her experiment in peace. She might have regretted the decision had she been in any lucid state of mind.
"Look what I've become, the nightmare that all should fear, is the pony you left alone"
Twilight screamed, simultaneously cursing and forgiving her friends. Did they actually care or were they no more than cads. Even after she told the voices everything about her friends, they kept mocking her and whispering in her ear.
"Assassin, murderer, monster"
The revenants whispered in her ears with a touch as gentle as the breeze but words as harsh as lava. Had Twilight paid closer attention she might have heard a nicer voice calling her name but at this point Twilight barely heard the jeers never mind a soft mumbling like the nicer voice. Their voice increased in frequency and loudness before disappearing.
"Days roll by without you friends
Twilight sobbed before wiping away her tears and getting to her hooves shakily, remembering that horrible day.
"30 have come and gone"
Twilight said, remembering the fiasco at her brother's wedding when she threatened Cadence and all her friends walked away. That had been the day she realized that harmony was not everywhere and that she needed to save the world from chaos. It was the day where finally, she understood her divine purpose.
I did it with best intentions
she said, what little guilt she had left starting to disappear.
But there is something I can't tell you,
I'm lost without you here. I am only living out a lie!
Twilight screamed, sadness gone completely and replaced by a need for absolute order. She would save everyone!
"Harmony will never leave, it is my everything!"
Twilight roared madly, while punching the floor. Chaos was bad and the opposite of it, order must be good!
"Nothing can bring you back,
harmony is all I have
Twilight yelled in an attempt to make the voices around her stop saying terrible things. Third time's the charm did not apply here as the ghosts just got worse, the blood dripping from their eyes now hitting the floor
"Assassin, murderer, monster"
They cried like banshees, ignoring Twilight's pleading and slamming her with words as sharp as any sword. The glowing light that made up the nicer voice faded away and was eaten by the shadows. Finally, Twilight saw clearly. She would do what was best for Equestria and listen to her mind. Morality had no place in the world she planned. All that would matter was harmony and order.
"Days roll by without you friends"
Twilight said, slowly starting to smile like she had when she was tardy.
"30 have come and gone"
she continued, closing the book in her hooves and stretching her face into a hideous grin, causing the circling wraiths to grin even more. Finally, they were on the same wave length
"I'm doing this with the best intentions"
Twilight convinced herself while reshelving the book and picking up a different one, "The Study of Torture and its Applications". She was ready.
"The one thing I can't tell you is, I'm lost without you here, I'm only living out a lie"
she screamed, pressing a button in the wall and opening it. A stair case showed up and the unicorn trotted down the steps to her secret lab. The lab stank of decay and chemicals even at the halfway point of the stairs.
"I'm the monster"
Twilight said, her last negative feelings pouring out as she dunked her head into a a water trough to slick back her hair and put herself into her "work dress". As soon as she was done, she pulled out a schedule with everything checked out except for "Rainbow Dash".
"I'm the villain"
She sang while turning on the flouroscent lights in the lab, revealing blood stains everywhere along with assorted pony parts. Shiny machines spat out data streams in a fashion not unlike that of a horror movie. A few skeletons, not all fake, completed the eerie look.
"What perfection, what precision"
Twilight sang, while putting on a black lab coat. The mad unicorn strapped on scalpels and knives before walking to the corner. A steady hoof-or in her case magic-would be key here. She wheeled a table with a pony cuffed to it towards the light while saying
"Keen incisions, I'll deliver.
Pure Elements, I'll deliver.
Your loyalty, you'll deliver!"
Rainbow Dash woke up in the process and the sight of the horrific lab made her gag. Her rose eyes twitched about wildly before finally settling on Twilight's face. Twilight pushed their faces together until they were almost touching before finishing her song
"I am Magic, Harmony's Assassin!"
