“Whoa dad that’s AWSOME” said the young Silent Charger as his father finished telling him what had transpired earlier that day.

He was a large colt, larger than any colt probably should be, he was just out of flight school and he was already taller than most fully grown stallions. He had a large build much like his father, he was tall muscular and had a wingspan to rival that of an Alicorn. But unlike his father, who like his name suggested was jet black, Silent was spotted with white, a gift from his mother, Pure Striker, the most noticeable discoloration was of his bat like wings, which were white as snow.

He was jumping up and down, so exited from his father’s tale of battle and victory he nearly couldn’t contain himself.

“So what did Queen Faust say about it… was she… angry?” said Silent when he realized that the base being destroyed was a major loss to the equestrian army.

“Actually,” said Darkened with a growing smile, “I had hoped you would come with me to tell her, plus while you’re there you could visit-“

“LOONY!!” Interrupted silent as he jumped into the air grinning like mad at the prospect of seeing his oldest and greatest friend.

“Yes yes, you can see Luna as well.” Darkened chuckled, he had always loved the fact that his son and princess Luna had become such good friends.

Because of Silent Charges huge stature and his somewhat fearful appearance, he had never been able to make many friends. And because of Princess Luna’s place in society, as one of the possible heirs to the throne she had never been even given the chance to make friends as she spent much of her young life in the confines of the castle.

But One day, when they were both around six years old, Darkened was on a trip to the castle to meet with Queen Fost, silent suddenly was nowhere to be found, around the same time he noticed that his own son was not at his side Princess Celestia burst into the room saying that she had looked away for one moment and the next thing she knew her sister was gone!
After several hours of frantic searching, and for some reason an impromptu musical number (you never really know when one of those is going to happen), The three found them in the royal garden trying to catch butterflies. Darkened and Queen
Faust had always wondered how their unlikely friendship had started…

About six years ago…

Silent Charger was board. Very, VERY, board. He had been forced to come along with his Dad for some sort of business thing.

He didn’t quite understand why he needed to come, his Dad said that it was because his mother was away and he couldn’t stay at the house. But he didn’t think that was very fair, he was responsible, he was a whole eight years old for Fausts sake!

Well, he would be in a few weeks anyway.

But still, his Dad could have just hired a babysitter to spare him the torture of being “acquainted with the royal family” or whatever that meant.

He had already met the Queen, who was just as tall as his Dad, which Silent though was cool. But he didn’t think it was very fair that she got to have wings AND a horn. But after that excitement had lost its touch, he was now hopelessly, amazingly, stupendously, BOARD.

So he did what any seven year old pony would do, he went exploring.

He wandered all over the castle, it was so COOL.

Especially the story windows, he like those the most. There were so many of them each with stories about great ponies and their service to the kingdom. But he especially liked the ones about the old battles for Equestria. He was amazed by the detail of the stain glass windows; you could make out every individual pony, griffin and even the giant dragon that had once tried to eat the castle he was standing in that very moment!

But his very favorite one was of a story he already knew very well. In it was a massive dark pony standing on the top of a mountain with Princess Celestia on his back, his foes, and all those that had stood between him and the young Celestia laid broken around him, His bat like wings stretched out for all to see.

It was his own father, and he could not be more proud.

“That’s… my Dad” Silent said to no one in particular bursting with pride, “That awesome pony is MY DAD… SO AWSOME!!”

“And that’s my sister!” said a small voice behind him.

“AAAAAAHHHH…” Silent jumped into the air in surprise letting loose a squeal that was quite unbecoming of a colt.

“AAAAAAHHHH…” said the little blue filly jumping into the air copying Silent.

Silent, who was now no longer shocked by the blue filly and her sudden appearance then did the one thing that seven year olds excel at, he said the first thing that popped into his head.

“Hi my name is Silent Charger, what’s yours!?!”

“I’m Luna, did you say that that Pony there is your Dad?”

“Yup, he sure is!” said Silent brimming with pride.

“That is sooooooooo cool, my sister has told me about when she was kidnapped once when she was tucking me in. Is it true that he fought off three hundred wolves all by himself?” Asked Luna

“I think he said it was more like four hundred” replied Silent

“Whoaaaa”

“I know right”

They then both sat down and looked at the window for a few minutes.

“So… do you want to see something really cool?” Asked Luna

“Not really, I like looking at the windows.” Silent responded

“Too bad!” giggled Luna as a faint blue aura enveloped both her horn and Silent.

The next five minutes consisted of Silent franticly flapping his wings while Luna ran through the halls with the panicked pony being dragged along behind her. But after a while Silent realized how much fun this whole experience was! So instead of yelling for her to let him go he said

“Hey Luna Can you stop for a second?”

“YUP!” chimed the young princess stopping on a dime and releasing Silent from her magic grasp… whose momentum then carried him directly into a pile of books left outside the library they had stopped by.

“Silent!” Luna said as she ran over to the pile of books, “are you alright?”

With that, Silent exploded form the mound of books and swooped underneath the princess saying “Point the way Princess LOONY”

The laughing princess then pointed down the hall and yelled with her best impersonation of a war cry “Onward Sir Charge”

After about a half an hour, the two furiously laughing ponies found themselves in the royal garden surrounded by all manner of creatures.

“Look” Luna said in awe as a giant butterfly rose from a nearby bush and began to fly away.

“Wow…” said an amazed Silent as he stared at the giant insect.

“Lets Catch it!” they both yelled in unison.

After about an hour of trying to catch the butterfly with no avail, three ponies burst into the garden, it was Darkened, Princess Celestia and Queen Faust, and they did not look very happy.

While the two ponies sat in the middle of the garden being chastised for running off without telling anyone where they were going Silent leaned over to Luna and softly whispered, “psssst, Loony”

“What?” responded the princess in a hushed voice

“Do you want to best friends?” asked Silent.

Luna then gave him a very confused look before cheerfully responding, “I thought we already were!”

The two foals then broke a fit of laughter that was so infectious that even the Queen and Darkened had to join in.
