we begin...
The day was nearly over, the sun was setting, it had been a good day, It had been a quiet day, and everything had gone smoothly
One could almost forget that there was a war raging.
“It couldn’t really be happening now could It?” thought Watchful Sky.
“Of course it could, you have seen the destruction that they have caused first hand.”
And he had, he saw with his own two eyes as his home in the clouds was slowly melted by the heat of the griffins fires. He had seen the pure havoc that they were capable of.
“wait… what am I doing, I need to report back to the watchtower. Crap, General Charge will have my flank mounted a wall this time for sure.”
With that Watchful Skys bolted back to his least favorite place in the world… his job.
As he came into the clearing however, something seemed out of place, something was missing. But what?
The mountain was there, the ground was there, his favorite resting tree was still where it was this morning. The only thing
missing was…
“Oh… Oh dear God… the Watchtower. Where is it. What could have happened, I was only gone for a few hours.”
Where outpost #5, also known as the watchtower, had stood for nearly 300 years, where it stood, perfectly intact that very
morning, there was nothing but smoldering wooden beams, and crumpled stone walls.
“Wha… What happened here…”
“Where… is everyone…”
“Rocker... Champ…r..Runner?”
“WHERE IS EVERYPONY”
Suddenly, there was a flicker of movement in the corner of his eye, something big.
“Who’s There… SHOW YOURSELF!!”
“I’m WARNING YOU” yelled Watchful Skys, who was on the verge of tears out of sheer terror as he drew his sword.
He had seen the griffins do horrible, impossible things. He had seen their speed and experienced their capacity for evil first hand.
As the number of shadows grew in numbers, he realized he was in for a fight. When the griffins began to step out of the shadows, he realized that he was in for the fight of his life. When he recognized the royal crests on their bloodstained armor, he understood that this would be the last fight of his life.
“No… this can’t… how did you…”
Shaking, Watchful Skys began to go into shock from the several realities that hit him in one moment, the magnificent Equestrian fortress that was the Watchtower was destroyed, it had fell in a matter of hours, most of his friends were probably… no … definitely dead, the griffins never took prisoners, he was probably the only living pony for miles, and the reason for all of this was bearing down on him.
The griffin who appeared to be the leader of the group, a massive griffin clad in solid gold armor, stained scarlet from the blood of, presumably, any of those who were foolish enough to challenge him, stepped forward.
Watchful Skys, broke, he dropped his sword, he was curled up in a shaking ball, sobs began to escape him as he hid his head from the griffin approaching him.
The griffin then spoke in a voice so toxic it could have wilted flowers form the very sound of it.
“if… it is any consolation,” he paused revealing an evil smile “you are one of the smarter ponies I have met, you accept your fate as opposed to uselessly fighting it.”
With that he raised his claw, a claw that glistened bright red in the sunlight.
Watchful Skys, accepting his fate as the griffin said, waited in silence for the finishing blow…
A blow that never came…
Instead of feeling the cold embrace of death, he felt a hard *thump* as if a small mountain had just fallen from the skies. Instead of hearing the *swoosh* of the leaders claw through the air, he heard a series of crunching and poundings, followed by grunts and moans, and finally he heard a sickening *crack*.
Confused, and terrified Watchful Skys lifted his head to see a monster of a bat-winged pegasus, holding the griffin leader in one hand. He had clearly broken the leaders arm as it was twisted and stuck out at an odd angle, and was holding him about a foot off the ground staring him directly into the eyes with a malic that rivaled no other.
After a few moments the mystery pegasus tossed the leader aside as if he was a ragdoll, who Watchful Skys was now sure was dead, and began to approach slowly.
Watchful Skys then began to take in his surroundings, the once imposing group of griffins now laid dead around him, they had been royal legionaries of the army, every last one of them. And the pegasus who approached him had batwings and was of a scale that Queen Faust herself would have marveled at. There was only one stallion in all of equestrian that fit that description.
“Is… is that General Charger… sir?”
“My my… who do we have here?” The stallion said in a voice that was not evil as his appearance would suggest, buy deep
and wise if not a bit gruff.
“Watchful Skys sir… That is.. 2nd Lt Watchful Skys Sir” said Watchful as he brought his hoof up at attention.
“At ease soldier… let’s get you home, you look like shit….oh and we have been through, a lot today, you can call me by my name… call me Darkened.”
“Yes Sir… I mean yes Darkened… sir”
“close enough, now lets go before more of flopsy here’s friends get here.” General Charger said as he nudged the Griffin leader.
As they flew home, Darkened, thought of what had just happened, and how this war was about to come a lot closer to home than he had ever expected. The griffins were never supposed to get that close to the center of the kingdom.
His thoughts then drifted to his family and what this meant for them.
He would do everything and anything in his power, and then some to keep his son out of this war.
About Three hours later Darkened Charger landed softly in front of his house only to be tackled to the ground by the only person he knew could accomplish such a thing… His son
“Hey Silent… have I got a story for you…”
