Chapter 5: A Surprise Visit

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Rarity awoke the next morning and she stretched her legs. Her nose rotated a few times and she turned her head away in disgust. She would need to wash her bed sheets and pillow cases today. Her heart weighed heavy in her chest as she made her way into the kitchen. She had made up her mind and told herself that she would quit this job, even if it meant not being able to have enough money to keep her own business open. Rarity was getting ready to make herself some breakfast until she heard a knock at the door. She walked out of the kitchen, and opened up the door. There she saw her mail mare standing before her with her mail. Rarity took the mail from her and said, " Why, you're a bit early today. Thank you for the mail."

"Have a good day, Rarity, and I'll see you tomorrow," the mail mare said.

Rarity closed the door and walked over to the counter as she skimmed through each piece of mail. She found a letter that was quite painful to her when she read where it was from. She put her other mail aside on the counter and opened up letter. She was shocked to find that Sapphire Shores had sent her pay check so quickly. Rarity's eye's opened wide when she saw the figure amount. She couldn't even dream of making such a sum of money in an entire month from working at her own business. She put the check down and began to question things out loud. "What if I am just over reacting to this whole immorality thing and that it's really not such a big deal? What if this is all actually good for me? I am learning new dances and getting into shape. What could I do with all of this money? I could help those in need or pay for Sweetie Belle's education." Right then and there, Rarity changed her mind and she decided that she would continue to work at the strip club even though her intuition was telling her otherwise.

Rarity went back to her bed room and hid her check in her dresser drawer. She knew Sweetie Belle had learned her lesson when it came to entering her room, but she didn't want to take any chances of her finding out about this check.

Rarity walked back to the kitchen and tried to make herself breakfast once more. She noticed that there was some kind of card on the table where she normally sat and ate breakfast. She stopped when she heard a knock at the door. Rarity grinded her teeth in frustration because she was hungry and she desperately needed to take a shower. "Coming, coming!" Rarity said as she quickly trotted over to the door. When she opened it, a blast so powerful, had knocked her backwards and she hit the floor hard. Rarity opened up her eyes and watched the confetti fall all around her.

A certain pink pony put her face just inches away from Rarity's face and began to giggle madly. "Come on you silly filly! Get up and let's go out!" Pinkie Pie said as she helped Rarity stand to her hooves again.

Rarity's eyes opened wide when she saw the rest of her four other friends standing outside of the door. "W-w-what brings you girls here today?" Rarity asked.

Pinkie Pie looked at her in surprise and said, "Do you mean to tell me that you don't know what day it is, Rarity!?"

Rarity looked very confused and shook her head no.

"It's your birthday! We came to take you out for breakfast on your special day!" Pinkie Pie said as she wrapped her front legs around Rarity's body and brought her in for a tight hug. Pinkie Pie's nostrils twitched a bit and she let go of her friend. "Um, Rarity, you smell uh, different."

Rarity's face was bright red with embarrassment. "I-I-I totally forgot that today was my birthday! I guess I must have been so busy that I overlooked the date. Would it be ok if I just grabbed a little snack and then hit the shower for a moment?"

Rainbow Dash hovered in the air and put her two front hooves on her hips. "As long as you don't take your normal shower, which is like two hours," she said.

"A lady must take her time in the bathroom, but I promise that I'll be as quick as I possibly can be," Rarity said. "Please have a seat on the couch and I'll be right out." Rarity turned away from her friends and went back into the kitchen. She got out a small protein bar to gnaw on and then she walked over to the kitchen table. She picked up the letter and opened it.

It was a card that Sweetie Belle had made. The card read, "Dear Rarity, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you, but I'm sad because we haven't been spending too much time together and that you seem to be distancing yourself from me even more now. I want to be with my big sister because you mean the world to me. I hope we can do something special together when I come home from school today. I love you big sis! Yours truly, Sweetie Belle.

Rarity put the card down and wiped some tears away from her eyes. She had been neglecting her little sister and she couldn't bear to let her find out about what she has been doing. She took one last bite of her protein bar and threw the wrapper into the trash.

Rarity stepped inside the shower. It wouldn't be very nice of her to make her friends wait too long, so she cut her normal shower time from two hours to only an hour. Rarity got out of the shower and combed her mane as quickly as possible. When she felt that her mane looked pretty enough, she hurried out back to the living room.

Twilight Sparkle perked up and smiled. "All ready, Rarity? Come on girls, let's go!"

Everypony got up except for Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.

Rainbow Dash had her head leaning against Fluttershy and was snoring loudly.

Fluttershy poked her in the side a few times and said, "Rainbow Dash, it's time to wake up."

Rainbow Dash was still asleep.

"I reckon ya gotta be a bit tougher with her than that, Fluttershy. Here's a little somthin' fun I learned when I had that sleep over at Twilight Sparkle's house with Rarity and Twi," Applejack said. Applejack took a pillow from the couch and placed it on the arm of the chair. She turned her back to it and stood on her front legs, almost as if she were about to do a handstand. Applejack bucked her hind legs with all of her might and the pillow hit hard against Rainbow Dash's head. "Head shot!" Applejack called out.

Rainbow Dash jolted up and said, "Hey! That's it! This means war!" Rainbow Dash got next to a pillow and got into bucking position, but Twilight Sparkle used her magic and levitated it away.

"Come on girls, you can all have a pillow fight later. I'm starving and I'm sure Rarity is quite hungry too," Twilight said.

Rainbow Dash sighed and walked over to the door.
