Ponies in Love
Chapter 29
Previous ChapterThree stallions walked through a dirty alleyway. One was dressed like a detective, the other two like officers. They searched high and low for what they were looking for. The youngest of the three signaled for the other two to see what he found. The detective trotted up at a steady pace, his stomach tying in knots. Her picture was still in his pocket.
Meanwhile, it was another beautiful day in Ponyville. All the little ponies just finished their Winter Wrap Up last week, and were enjoying the freshness of spring. Rainbow Dash was having a blast, taking a dip in her marefriend's private pond with her beloved tortious. "You're a pretty good swimmer, Tank." She encouraged, watching him play in the shallowest end with his floaties on.
She flew under the water, enjoying the resistance it gave her wings, as she went through the water like a shark. She popped back up, droplets of water following her up in the air as she craned her head back, whipping her mane backwards. She held her victorious pose in the air, relishing in the spring wind as it chilled her wet fur. Her eyes burst open as her ears flicked to the side to hear the tiniest of cheers.
She knew exactly who was watching her as her smile increased in width. She scanned the area she heard the joyfulness and her eyes instantly connected with her lover's. "Perfect." The cyan mare gave a daring smile and a wink before doing some impressive flips and twists in the air, always loving to show off to the yellow pegasus. She was able to stop her momentum on a bit, and hovered with practiced grace to sit neatly on the ground.
Fluttershy beamed with pride as she clapped her hooves together. Rainbow loved how her blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight, how much love and adoration she saw there. The ever-shy mare scooted closer to nuzzle the soaked athlete.
"Oh my Rainbow, you still haven't lost your touch." She honestly praised, enjoying her mane getting wet from the cuddles. She felt strong and wet forelegs wrap themselves around her tightly, keeping her back cool from the warm sun. Spring was her favorite time of year, this was when everything was made new again, and when all her animal friends came back home or back to the waking world. And now she had another reason, this is when her beloved Dashie springs back to life after getting her tortious back.
"Well of course I haven't, silly filly? I mean, I'm still as awesome as ever—right?" she left her a dramatic pause, squinting one eye shut as she pressed her soaking face against Fluttershy's soft cheek.
The buttery pony giggled at her marefriend's constant need for attention. "Oh, you are still the absolute most awesome pony, in both land and sky." Fluttershy felt her smile grow larger at seeing how happy her lover became at the words. She quickly slipped out of her hold and shot in the air, only to do a perfect dive into the water.
Rainbow couldn't believe how fast she did that, or how little of a splash she made. She trotted back to the edge of the pond, amused. "Where did you go Flutters?" she asked, wondering how deep she must have been for her not to see her. Her eyes caught sight of pink and yellow, further out toward the middle.
The fast flyer flew through the air, letting her hooves skim the surface of the water, leaving a trail under her. Rainbow Dash was close enough to see her best friend's head smoothly emerge from the pond. Her pink mane floated perfectly around her. Her hair, a smile on her lips, covered her right eye. "But this this isn't land or sky baby—" she stated in her most confident voice, floating on her back and letting her wings outstretch to their full length. "—this is water." She emphasized her point by splashing the intrigued Rainbow Dash with her golden wings. "My turf!" she exclaimed, smiling smugly.
Rainbow Dash could not believe what she just witnessed. Yet somehow, a cocky Fluttershy really got her heart beating faster. But the competitive pony within would not stand down from a challenge with such a worthy opponent. "Oh, alright, I see you baby." She cannonballed into the water, before appearing at the surface again. "It's on!"
The two winged lovers splashed and played for what felt like the whole afternoon. They had dunked each other, raced, did aquatic tricks, and floated with each other, eventually tiring themselves out. Once they finally left the water, both could barely make it to the shower to rinse off before letting themselves fall on the bed.
"Well Fluttershy, I got to say, you are ninja status in the water." Rainbow complimented as she pulled the smaller mare into a hug as they cuddled under the covers.
"Ninja, huh? That's a funny thought. But you are a natural born swimmer, you may as well be a fish." Fluttershy replied, enjoying the nuzzles she received against her cheek.
"Nah, I would rather be a pegasus any day. Your pegasus, that is." The athletic mare rationalized after a brief ponder on her lover's words. "I like being able to hold you in all terrains." She started planting little kisses along the yellow neck.
Fluttershy tried to wiggle away, to no avail, giggling. "Oh, my Dashie is such a big blue softie."
Rainbow instantly stopped her kissing as she sat up, giving her mare friend a mock stern look, "Don't you dare mutter a word about this, unless I go on a kissing strike." She said with a smirk.
Fluttershy smiled as she played with the multi colored locks that swung just above her face. "You wouldn't last two minutes on that strike dear." She called her bluff. She chuckled in her sweet voice as she pulled the cyan mare closer to her face. "And neither would I."
Rainbow Dash gave a quick lick to her beloved's nose before starting on the eskimo kisses. "Yeah, you're right. By the way, it's super awesome that we found a physical activity that you are almost as good at as I am in. Almost." She teased, resting her entire body on the buttery frame.
"I was just taking it easy on you Dashie." The animal caretaker defended.
"Since when did my little Shy become such a trash talker? I think I kind of like it." Rainbow whispered with a smile.
Fluttershy giggled all the more. "I learned from the best."
Ding Dong
Both mares' ears flicked to the sound of the doorbell, both not wanting to leave the comfort of the bed. Fluttershy wiggled from under the heavier pony. "I'll get it sweetheart. You rest."
Rainbow looked outside, to notice how dark it was getting. She quickly rose from the bed, and high tailed it down stairs. She raced past the quiet mare and peeped through the eyehole. She tilted her head to the side in her quizzical way before opening it. "What's up Twilight? What brings you out so late?"
The purple alicorn smiled politely. "Good evening Rainbow. Good evening Fluttershy. I hope I didn't wake you both. May I come inside?" Both pegasi nodded yes as they moved aside to let their friend in.
Fluttershy took her studious friend's saddle bags off of her. "Good to see you Twilight. Is everything ok? How is Spike?" she worried for her good chum.
Twilight shut her eyes peacefully. "Oh, Spike is fine. He is actually having a sleep over with the CMC at the Apple Farm."
Rainbow cackled, "Lucky AJ."
Twilight smiled, knowing what a hoof-ful all the youngsters could be. "Yes, lucky Rarity too. She agreed to help. She didn't seemed too pleased when the CMC decided to have a little camp out in the barn."
"Oh no! I do hope they don't catch a cold. A-and that they won't be telling scary stories." Fluttershy fussed.
Twilight decided better not to bring up they were going to have a horror movie night before camping out in the barn.
"Don't worry baby. They got AJ and Rares. Besides, the squirts really toughened up since our last camping trip, I'm sure they aren't so easily shaken up by some scary movies or stories!" she held her quivering mare friend in a wing hug.
"I know Spike still gets a little spooked but I'm sure he will be braver knowing the girls are watching him. In fact, Spike is sort of why I'm here." Both mares gave her a questioning look. "You see, he has been gone most of the day. Sometimes I forget how important he is at keeping things organized in such a big castle as mine. I totally forgot to check the mail until just an hour ago, and I was so busy trying to sort things out. Then I realized I got an invitation. And well, so did you two." She used her magic to pull the envelope out of her bag, and float it to the cyan mare.
"Our invite, mailed to your castle?" Rainbow questioned.
The lavender pony nodded. "Derpy." Both pegasi nodded in understanding.
Rainbow opened the letter as Fluttershy squeezed her head in between the blue fore legs to read as well. "Oh, a large fundraiser in Detrot? It says we are wanted there?" Fluttershy said aloud.
"Yes Fluttershy. It appears the venue isn't quite big enough to ask for Princess Celestia or Princess Luna. But it seems just the right size for me. And Since you girls played such an important part of saving Equestria, and my ascent, they saw it fit to invite you all as well." The Princess explained.
"So, are we going?" Rainbow asked. "Detrot is a bit of a ways away. And not always known for being the safest city."
"The fundraiser is actually to help at risk fillies and colts from that town. It's going to be a pretty big event, so it should be pretty safe. The chair pony of the event stressed how much our presence would help, not just by getting other better off ponies to come and donate, but by showing the fillies and colts of Detrot other communities are becoming more aware of their plight, and banding together to help. I think it would be great if all of us girls went."
Fluttershy was staring at the ground. She heard many horror stories of the rising crime rates of that city. But she also knew of some ponies from there, good ones. And if her friendship with Discord showed anything, it showed that anyone deserves a second chance. And some of these kids didn't even get a first chance, being born in such impoverished neighborhoods. "I think it's a grand idea Twilight. We should be doing more to help. Not all of Equestria is as well off as Ponyville."
Rainbow rubbed her chin in thought. "I don't know you two. I want to help, I really do. I just worry about some of you girls getting in trouble in such a rough town. Especially at night. If they could just move it to a neighboring town, I would feel much better about it."
Twilight scoffed. "Come on Dash. It will be a well-publicized event with plenty of security. We aren't going to be roaming the streets by ourselves. Besides, it's my duty as the Princess of Friendship to extend a helping hoof in any way I can."
Rainbow took a deep breath, smiling. "I guess you're right. I don't know why I worried so much. We have taken on really baddies, why would regular old ponies be such a big deal? Besides, I could take on any punk that tries to mess with one of us. Pow, bam!" she threw some punches in the air.
"That's my brave pegasus!" Fluttershy cheered.
Rainbow forced her smile as she let her lover wrap her fore legs around her frame. For some reason, Rainbow could not shake a feeling of dread from deep within.
The next morning the detective opened the door to his office to let the weeping couple out. "How could this happen? My baby!" the mother was hysterical, as the father tried to walk her out, tears in his eyes.
The gruffy stallion shut the door, before slumping into his chair. He ran his hooves through his short, gray mane. He peered at the photos from the crime scene. He transferred from Cloudsdale a few years ago, but it took some getting used to dealing with the violence and cruelty of the crime in Detrot. Even so, he was not prepared for the body he had seen yesterday.
He shifted through the pictures of the young mare's corpse. "She still looks like a filly to me. She died so young." He said to himself. He felt sick looking at her twisted body. There were bruises and cuts everywhere. He face was smashed in. Blood covered her groin region from forced entry. Some of her teeth were laying around her, some of her hair pulled out.
He grimaced as he looked at the picture of her fore hooves. They showed signs of being worn so thin, like she was dragged around, fighting so hard to grasp to the concrete around her. "She must have struggled. Damn." He shut his eyes as he saw the next picture, how her wings looked like they were ripped off. It was all so brutal to him, so senseless.
He placed the photos in a vanilla folder, adding it to a file cabinet, with twenty more like it. It made him sick knowing that she wasn't the first victim, and probably not the last.
The mane six were enjoying their train ride, laughing. They were all on pins and needles being at Twilight's first official fundraiser as Princess. Rarity and Applejack were finally more open about their relationship, cuddling on their little love seat on the train.
Rainbow kept her ears on the conversation, and her eyes outside the train. She was relieved to have Fluttershy tucked safely under her wing. No matter how hard she tried to distract herself, she could not shake her feeling of dread that filled her chest. Sometimes, her breathing got harder, and her muscles twitched.
She was momentarily distracted when she felt a tiny little body squirm between Fluttershy and herself. She moved her gaze to see two snow-white bunny ears poke their way, irritatingly, through her feathers. "Why did you have to bring him along?" she complained out loud.
Fluttershy shot her a glare as she gave her favorite bunny some room to stretch out as he finished his carrot snack. "Hush now Rainbow. My darling Angel Bunny isn't bothering anyone. He is behaving so nicely for mama." She cooed as she tickled his tummy, making him kick his leg against Dash's ribs, making the fast flyer stiffen in annoyance.
Rarity took the chance to voice her opinion. "It would have probably been easier if you had left your handsome little guy at home darling. Tonight will be a big night for all of us." Rarity conversed as she braided Applejack's hair. Although the earth pony looked a tad bored, she did seem very relaxed, and was holding perfectly still.
"Oh I know. It's just, I have never been to Detrot before. I am a little nervous." She gave a sweet look to her mare friend. "Not that I don't feel safe with you around Dashie. It's just, I am meeting a friend over there. And I don't know why I am so excited to see her, how far she's come. And she wrote in her letters she would love to meet Angel." Fluttershy continued to babble on with her excuses for bringing her beloved furry friend.
Rainbow rolled her eyes at seeing the smug rabbit bask in all the attention. She was trying to think of this friend of Fluttershy's. She remembered her being mentioned a few days ago. Somepony from Canterlot, or that she met there. Her name began with a C. "And who is this mystery mare again Shy?" she asked, curiosity getting the best of her. She didn't want to seem jealous to the others, she was working hard on getting better at that. It was tough for The Rainbow Dash though. She just loved being the center of attention.
The yellow mare pet her beloved bunny. "Candy. Candy Cane. She is a sweetie. We've been pen pals for a while now and—"
The train came to a sudden stop. They all nearly fell out of their seats, all looking annoyed. Twilight was the first to speak. "Well, that was quicker than expected. Is everypony alright?" she looked over to each of her friends as they nodded. They all stifled their laughter to see how mad both Angel and Rainbow were, he somehow managed to land on her face. "I'm certain this will be the only rough spot we will be hitting on our trip. So, chop chop girls! Let's get a move on to the hotel so we can get ready for our big night." Twilight encouraged, trying to hide her nerves for the official event.
Rainbow Dash was finally starting to relax after all the uneasiness. She leaned back on the hotel furniture, her marefriend under one foreleg, a glass of wine in the other. The soft jazz pleasantly played through the air as she watched Rarity go to work on Pinkie's mane. She felt the small rabbit cuddle between Fluttershy and herself. "Even Angel's behaving pretty well today. If that's not a good sign, then I don't know what is."
She moved her gaze back to her beloved pegasus, who was quiet as ever, content with just staring lovingly into magenta eyes. Her athletic heart skipped a beat as she rubbed noses with her. "I'm sure everything will go just fine tonight. I don't know why I'm getting all these funny feelings. I must be getting a cold. Better order some mimosas at the party. Heh." The cyan mare slowly savored the wine.
She had been cutting down on her drinking a lot, only really drinking more than the occasional glass or beer, excluding social gatherings such as these. She was trying to keep her pace slow and steady, a pace she wasn't too used to going. This was her third glass, and she was beginning to feel the buzz. When the girls decided to pop open a few bottles to help Twilight calm down, she remembered the hesitant look on Fluttershy's face when she was so eager to get a taste.
"She's probably going to give me a stern talking to once we're alone. At least she isn't making a scene now." She finished her third glass. Her hoof hovered over the bottle for but a moment, before deciding to take a break and reach for the bread and cheese. She smirked at her Shy's smile of approval and relief. "Not that she should make a scene. I have my drinking way under control now. Besides, I'm a grown mare. I think I'm mature enough to have a little fun. Anything to shake this nagging feeling."
Her train of thought stopped when she felt a loving hoof rub small circles on her alcohol filled tummy. She relaxed a little more, enjoying the feel. What small annoyance she felt from being on a short leash when it came to her drinking was over shadowed by her marefriend's love and affection. It never ceased to amaze her how her timid little filly always knew just what to do to make her feel better, to make her feel loved. And after that short while of being denied that love and affection, she really didn't see any need to pick a fight over not getting the party started a little early.
Her joy was short lived once she heard the whimsical tune of Rarity's voice sing her name, making Rainbow Dash cringe. "I guess my head's next on the chopping block?" she complained out loud, making the pristine unicorn huff and puff.
"Oh Dashie, be nice. Rarity only wants to make sure you're not underdressed for the party." Fluttershy rebuked, softly shoving the suddenly much heavier Rainbow Dash up.
"I told you all, I'm not wearing any clothes. It's supposed to be a party. I want to be able to move around on that dance floor."
Rarity used her magic to drag Rainbow Dash to the vanity mirror. "Please Rainbow Dash, this isn't merely a party as you put it. This is a benefit to help the under privileged youth! Surely even a tomcolt such as yourself can find it in your fashion hating heart to glam up a bit. For the colts and fillies!"
Dash groaned as Rarity was on her case again. She wanted to have fun, not be on display. Her great body image was enough. "Twilight's the princess here, not me. Isn't my awesome wind blown mane and sleek body enough? I'm sure not everypony there is going to be all dolled up for tonight."
Rarity started by running a comb through Rainbow's mane, tugging at a few knots, a little more forcibly than usual. "Yes, they are all going to be dolled up for tonight darling. One young mare must look her best."
"And what about these fillies and colts we're supposed to be helping. Wouldn't it be better to be, I don't know, helping at their schools? Fixing their homes? Taking them out to read and play sports? Anything rather than rubbing noses with these snooty stuck ups?" The prime pegasus was still ticked off on not being back in the reserves yet. She was getting really sick of politics.
"Really Miss Dash! I know you like to pretend to be this, I don't care mare, but to try and belittle what we are doing for these youngster?" Rarity started tugging a tad harder at Rainbow's mane in her frustration.
A little piece snapped in the bold pegasus. She gave a quick hit to the comb that floated in the air, breaking it. "Will you just back off me for a minute Rares? And stop tugging on my mane so much, it hurts!" she said, a little more loudly than she meant too.
Any background conversation stopped as Rainbow held her harsh stare at the red-faced fashionista. Applejack was in between the two fiery mares in an instant, standing tall. Rainbow Dash hated how quick her friends were to jump to the worst conclusion. Thinking she was the same hot head she used to be, who would go throwing a punch over any little argument.
It quickly dissipated once she felt the familiar tender hoof place itself on her shoulder. She took a deep breath, trying to bite her tongue. Oddly enough, AJ did not look mad, just concerned.
"Now Dash, calm down. I know ya may not be used to holdin yer liquor like ya used to, but don't go losin yer temper over whether to dress up or not." Applejack tried to diffuse the situation.
Rainbow Dash groaned inwardly. "Stop treating me like I am a raging drunk ready to fight all of you. I only had three glasses of some soft stuff for crying out loud!"
Applejack stomped a hoof, trying to stop the angering pegasus in her tracks. "Now quit all that stinkin thinkin, ya hear. I ain't accusing ya of getting drunk, or bar fights. We all say things we don't mean when we're mad, and some of that wine is bound to loosen yer lips a bit. Is not wearin a dress really worth causin such a big fuss on Twi's big night?"
Rainbow looked down. She felt soft feathers rest on her back, and looked to see the concerned blue eyes of her lover. "It's okay Dashie. Don't be mad. I'm here." She heard the quiet mare whisper.
Twilight finally spoke out. "Come now Rainbow, don't let this ruin our night of fun. Nopony is going to force you to dress up like you're on a run way, right Rarity?"
Said unicorn was still looking a bit ticked off, "Hmph! ... Why of course not." She smiled as she felt her beautiful farmer place a strong fore leg over her back.
"See. But I do see your point about doing more to really help these kids. I'm sure if the six of us start volunteering, we could inspire loads of others to help. Even if we could help turn one kid's life around, it will all be worth it, don't you think?"
Rainbow Dash sighed. Now she felt all crumby. She looked to Fluttershy, seeing her smile gave her courage. She then looked to Rarity. She may get on her nerves sometimes, and she never understood her obsession with all things fashion, but she did appreciate her friendship, and held it in high regards.
"Oh alright. I'm sorry Rarity. I didn't mean to snap at your. And after thinking about it, maybe I can go with a fancy scarf or something, a little accessory, and some nice horseshoes?" Dash apologized with a friendly smile.
Said smile was returned. "Well, thanks Miss Dash. I was going to be the bigger mare and apologize first, but as always, our little speed demon has to swoop in and steal it from me." Rarity tried at sarcasm, gaining a glare and laugh from the prismatic mare.
The lavender mane unicorn walked up and hugged her friend. "I'm sorry too, I know I can be a tad pushy." Rarity's head turned quickly at hearing a snort from her favorite Apple. "I never meant to push you in a corner. And of course, my sincerest apologies for pulling on your mane."
Rainbow chuckled and hugged back. "Awe, no biggie. It actually didn't even really hurt, just bugged me."
Rarity's eyes glittered with inspiration. "Now that we can put this little boo boo behind us, I have just the right scarf for your complexion. And I happen to have a very beautiful lightning bolt clip for that mane of yours. Oh, this will be fun!"
Rainbow had the look of unease again. "Let's not go too crazy now. Try and keep it simple. I know with your skills, and my natural coolness, it's bound to come out perfect!"
None of the ponies noticed Fluttershy slinking out of the room with her faithful rabbit. She left their fancy hotel room to go out and get some fresh air. "Oh Angel Bunny, tonight is so full of surprises. Thank you for being such a good boy for mama." She smiled as she felt him cuddle in her mane.
"I just wish Rainbow didn't want to drink so much. I know she has come a long way, and well, she deserves to have tonight. But did you see how quickly things got heated in there? Sometimes, she just can't help herself when she over does it on her drinking."
Angel nodded his head in approval, remembering all too well on that horrid night when the rainbow pony got drunk off her flank, and nearly broke everything in the house. At least the crazed flying pony hadn't had another break down like that since.
Fluttershy stopped for a moment, when she thought she heard some hoof steps following her. But when she stopped, so did they. She shrugged, thinking nothing of it. "It just worries me Angel, knowing how far she has come. I'm so proud of her, you know?"
Angel rolled his eyes, but kept his thoughts and expressions to himself. But as he tuned out the sound of his pet pony's voice, his ears started to pick up on another pair of hoof steps, and some heavy breathing.
Fluttershy was finally out in the garden now. She began to feel less claustrophobic. She trotted toward a tree filled with birds, enjoying their friendly tune. "I would just hate for her to have a relapse."
Both bunny and mare stopped as they heard the sound of someone bumping into a trashcan, and the rustle of the bushes. Fluttershy's ears folded back, as she began to notice that it was getting dark, and how very alone she was. She gave a gulp. She was done being afraid. "Who-who goes there?" she questioned in the strongest voice she had.
Out of the bushes came out a smaller, yet still strong and dark looking stallion. He held a calm smile on his face as he met her gaze. "Why, hello miss. Pleasure to meet another nature lover out on a fine afternoon such as this." He slowly walked her way.
Fluttershy still felt the fur on the back of her neck rise from the sudden introduction. She slowly calmed down, he seemed nice enough. "H-hello. Um, nice day we are having, isn't it?" she now wished she had told one of her friends that she decided to go for a walk. It slipped her mind that Detrot was not as safe as Ponyville.
He kept his distance, and sat down. He looked about, scanning the garden in a cool and collected manner. "Yes it is." He dragged his hoof down the bark of a tree he was next to. "I certainly love walking through here. There just aren't enough trees here in Detrot. Not enough animals neither. A pegasus as fine tuned to nature such as myself can find it, depressing, sometimes."
Fluttershy could relate. After earning her cutie mark, and learning about all the wonders on the ground, she found herself depressed in Cloudsdale when she wasn't with her Rainbow. She took a tentative step forward, and sat down. Angel fussed on her back before jumping off and standing guard between the two pegasus. He didn't like the way the stallion smelled.
The dark stallion with the icy blue eyes peered down to the rabbit, smiling. "My, what a cute little bunny you have here." He brought his face lower, only to quickly move it when Angel swiped at him.
"Angel! Be nice to the friendly guy! This is no way to behave." She rebuked.
"It's alright miss, may I get your name?" his gaze slowly leered back to hers. Something in his icy blue eyes left her uneasy. It was like he was staring into her soul. "Oh, yes. Where are my manners? It's Miss Fluttershy." She held out her hoof.
His smile grew as his strong hoof grabbed hers. "Miss, hm? I was right, unmarried are we?"
Fluttershy was a bit taken back by the question, noticing how he still held onto her hoof. "Yes, unmarried, but still taken." She softly tugged her hoof back, as he let go.
"Miss Fluttershy. Why does that name sound so familiar?" he looked her up and down, as she felt herself grow just a bit smaller from that gaze. "Awe, yes, you're an Element of Harmony, right?" his smile was still there as she nodded. "Stupid me." He hit himself in the head. "How could I forget such a pretty face?"
Fluttershy held onto Angel tighter. "And what is your name, good sir?"
He gave a soft chuckle, laying down on the ground, hoof playing with a small flower. "Oh, it doesn't really matter, especially to a pony as important as you. Just some Detrot native, stuck at a party with his friends, feeling left out." He said in a solemn tone.
Fluttershy felt her heartstrings pulled, She could definitely relate to this. She felt a little more trusting of the pegasus before her. "If he was really here to hurt me, I'm sure he would have done it by now. I'm must he is just a nice and lonely guy." She thought to herself. "Oh no, that doesn't sound very fun." She sympathized.
He looked up to the resting birds. "Yes, maybe I'm just being a baby. You see, it's my best pal's birthday. We rented a hotel room to party. I like to take things easy, I'm a quiet sort of guy. But him, he is a party animal. And I hate to admit it, but he has a drinking problem."
Fluttershy flinched at how similar their situations were. "It seems to me more like you're foal sitting him rather than celebrating."
He looked back at her again. "It's like you read my mind. That's exactly how it feels. He can have a real bad temper too." He sat up. "We have to walk on egg shells around him when he is drinking. I just wanted a quick time out, get some fresh air. Smell the roses."
"Yeah, that sounds nice." She admitted.
"So, what brings a hero like yourself out here?" he asked, still playing with the tiny flower.
"I'm no hero." She sighed. "Oh, my friends and I are actually participating at a benefit to help at risk colts and fillies here in Detrot. It's actually being held at the country club next door."
"Well, that's nice. Such a great thing you are doing for the kids. That is a pretty snazzy place, we are in the nice part of town—"
Suddenly, a protective looking Rainbow Dash caused a gush of wind and was in between her marefriend and this strange pegasus. "Who are you?" she was in an aggressive stance, her freshly styled mane already messed up from her flight.
He held his hooves up. "Just a nopony."
"Dashie, stop acting like this! We were just talking." Fluttershy defended.
"C'mon babe. Rarity is all ready to style you. We got to get ready, we're running behind schedule." She never took her eyes off the stallion.
He was back to looking into the yellow mare's eyes. "Maybe I can fly you two lovely ladies back to your room?"
Rainbow Dash forced her head between their gaze. "No thanks bub. I got it. Private Princess business, real confidential like." With that, she swooped Fluttershy into her grip and flew off.
The mysterious stallion just sat there as he saw the rainbow trail head around the hotel. He smiled to himself, looking quite content. "Well, won't the boss be pleased to hear about his old friends returning." He crushed the little flower under his hoof without even looking at it. "It seems he will be having a fun birthday after all."
Fluttershy gripped a startled Angel tightly at being taken into the air so suddenly. "Rainbow Dash, stop this now!"
Rainbow's expression hardened, as she held onto the mare in her fore legs tighter. "No. Fluttershy, what did I tell you about going off on your own here? What did I tell you about this place? You got to be by my side at all times. Understand?"
As hard as she tried, the yellow pegasus was getting flashbacks of the times around Rainbow's birthday. "I think I can handle talking to another pony with out you holding my hoof Dash." Fluttershy complained. "Or breathing down my neck."
Rainbow Dash set her mare friend down once they came to their hallway, making sure the stallion wasn't following. "Don't be like that Shy. I'm serious. I don't feel comfortable with you going out alone like that."
They made their way into the hotel. Fluttershy rolled her eyes. "Why, afraid I may go kissing someone?" she blurted out in anger.
Rainbow Dash stopped, and her face turned red. "I am so sick of everyone thinking of me like that. I'm not that pony anymore." Her eye twitched as she placed her hoof on Fluttershy to keep her from walking away. "I'm being serious Shy, Detrot is not a safe place for a filly like you. Especially alone."
Fluttershy frowned. The cyan mare sighed as she let her go and they kept walking. "I trust you, ok. I sure as Hell don't trust that guy, did you notice the way he was looking at you?"
Fluttershy kept shaking her head, this was all seeming too familiar. "He's just different, like me. You always get like this when you drink."
The fast flyer felt her face grow red again. "Now we're bringing this into it, eh?"
"Yes, yes I am." Fluttershy argued.
"I'm not drunk Fluttershy. Pft, how little respect do you have for me?"
"I can smell it on your breath from here Rainbow Dash. You're feathers are so easily ruffled when you drink. And you know it bothers me. I'm here to have fun with my friends, not foal sit." Fluttershy started moving away.
The fur on Rainbow's neck rose in anger. "Go on, continue with the insults. Now I'm a baby!" her voice was growing in volume. "In case you have been too blind to notice, I have been changing, and I'm just trying to protect you. And you're just going to sit there and kick me while I'm down!"
"You're reaction is just proving my point Dash." Fluttershy felt the tears in her eyes. She really didn't want to go anywhere now.
"My fault. It's always my fault. Way to go dumb old Dash, just keep messing things up! That's all I ever get from you. It can never be perfect Miss Fluttershy's fault, no! Know what? You can be a real jerk Fluttershy." Rainbow complained, not wanting to look at the yellow mare. "For your information, I am here to have fun too! I should be able to have a few drinks! I'm not one of your pets you can just boss around!"
Before they knew it, they were in their room, yelling at each other while their friends watched quietly. Applejack was the first to speak up. "Everythin all right with ya two?"
Rainbow Dash was fuming as she went straight for the ice chest. "No, I'm just an over bearing, jealous drunk, isn't that right, sweetheart?"
Fluttershy sat in a corner, looking down. "And I'm just a big jerk who can't take care of herself and doesn't let you have fun."
Twilight got in between the two. "Girls, calm down. Let's talk this through."
"I don't want to talk. I want to fly, go home. But I can't!" The rainbow pony looked to Rarity. "Sorry I messed up my mane flying so fast to protect my oh so ungrateful sweetheart. You can just fix it again later."
AJ looked to Fluttershy, then to Dash. "C'mon, let's go for a walk. Clear yer head. The rest of ya girls will stay here?" All but Fluttershy nodded.
Rainbow Dash nodded and hovered out, forelegs crossed. "Rainbow Dash, what happened out there? I thought yer just gonna find Shy?"
"I did! There was this creepy looking stallion talking to her." She exclaimed. She noticed the look she was getting. "Don't you dare look at me like that AJ. I wasn't jealous!"
The earth pony rolled her eyes. "I believe ya. Will ya just come down to my level and walk?" She jumped up and hovered a moment in the air. "Us earth ponies can't fly!"
Rainbow Dash reluctantly returned to the floor. "The whole thing just sucks. She starts going off on me, saying I'm jealous. Then she starts saying I'm drunk, and I'm just making this stuff up in my mind."
The farmer frowned, concern in her eyes. "In her defense, ya have been drinking an awful lot. Ima thinkin yer just buzzed, I can tell when yer drunk."
"You can't honestly tell me you're defending the way she is belittling me. I'm trying to protect her! My gut says that guy is bad news. I get it, Fluttershy tries to see the best in everypony, but some ponies are just no good." The blue pegasus was getting frantic again.
"Calm down, calm down. She definitely coulda been more tactful with her vocabulary. She just worries about ya. RD, ya should be proud of how far ya come, but ya got to remember. Fluttershy has some serious issues. She hated herself for a long time. And I don't want to bring up the past, but ya really damaged her on yer birthday. She's a victim, and still in the healing process."
Rainbow Dash continued walking, but felt her hooves getting heavier. She really wanted to blame this all on her partner, make her feel bad for the pain she caused. But she saw her friend's point, she knew she was right on some things. "Damn it all AJ, why do you gotta be so freaking wise and honest all the time?"
The orange pony laughed, playfully nudging against her friend. "I'm only so wise because I have made a lot of mistakes. And I learn from others."
"I was really scared that something could have happened to her AJ. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she was hurt because I wasn't watching her. You should have seen this guy. If only you could feel the vibe I was feeling."
The blonde mare nodded. "I don't doubt yer gut feeling Dash. I know when somethin don't settle right with me, I'm drivin myself mad tryin to figure it out. I know she loves ya, and appreciates the bodyguard act. If anypony wants to be protected, it's that filly. But ya can't make her feel useless. Sometimes, ya get brash."
"Brash Dash I guess." The cyan mare agreed. "But she should still trust me. And not go accusing me of being drunk, when I'm not. It's really tearing me down how she is always seeing the worst in me."
"Yeah, I'm sure they are all talking to her about it. But ya didn't give her much hope, snappin at my marefriend the way ya did." The southerner raised a brow.
Rainbow blushed profusely. "Look, I'm really sorry about that Applejack. I was feeling cornered. But that doesn't excuse me taking it out on my friends. And, well, you're a way more patient pony then me. If someone had flipped out on Shy, I would be a hot mess." Rainbow Dash sat down and ran her hooves through her mane. "I guess I should cool down a bit on the drinking. I have a long way to go on my anger management. I truly apologize for yelling at Rarity, from the bottom of my heart."
"Well then, ya can just say sorry again to her. As for yer mare, is this little relapse really worth all the steps back yer takin?"
The pegasus took a deep breath. "No, it's not. I love her Applejack. I just want to make sure she is safe and happy. I try my best, sometimes, I'm just lost."
"Yer doin a fine job RD. We all just gotta tryin be better than the day before. Besides, every couple has their fights. Believe me, me and Rares can really go at it." She patted her friend on the back. "And I'll be there, keepin yer drinking in check. Just keep in mind, self control. That'll impress Fluttershy."
"Okay buddy. I promise I will. I'm not going to let all this negativity ruin our night." The fast flyer gave a confident smile.
"Thata girl. Now let's go fix ya up for tonight. I'm sure my head's next." The apple loving pony joyfully stated as she turned them both around.
"I just hope Shy can put this past us and have a good night." Dash thought.
When the two athletic mares returned, the yellow pegasus was still upset. She refused to look or speak to her lover, making the proud pony's posture droop. Rainbow Dash had a quick heart to heart with Rarity. "Hey Rarity, I'm really sorry about making such a fuss over tonight's wardrobe. I was being stubborn."
Rarity went straight to work on the colorful mane. "It's quite alright dear. All water under the bridge. Even the marvelous Rarity has been known to be stubborn from time to time. But if it will make you feel better, you can make it up to me by letting me add some jewelry to your mane!" the unicorn tried at bribery.
Rainbow Dash had to sit on her hooves in order to stop from face hoofing. "I trust you to make me look good. Actually, I would really appreciate it, to try and get back on Shy's good graces."
"Yes, she is pretty angered by the whole thing. She is truly worried you have already had too much to drink." Rarity spoke as she styled the mane, magic lifting her tools.
Rainbow Dash could see her yellow lover sneaking a peak from the vanity mirror. She smirked as the ever timid Shy quickly looked away. "At least I'm still on her mind." "I know she worries about me. But she worries about everything. I already promised myself I will keep my drinking under control. I'm going to show her I can be responsible."
"Well then tell her Rainbow Dash. Encourage her. She has this mind set that you just want to drink all your problems away tonight because of her. She's feeling quite guilty." The fashionista explained.
"Thanks for the tip. I will. Did she tell you why I got so mad?" Rainbow covered her nose as an onslaught of hairspray showered her.
"Yes. She told us she had just met a stallion, who seemed nice, out in the gardens, at the end of the hotel grounds." Rarity went back to work.
"Yeah, and that isn't exactly safe to be doing. I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself, this isn't Ponyville. I got some really bad vibes from the guy Rarity. I was so worried something was going to happen to her. I still can't shake this feeling. " Rainbow still felt the unease deep in her stomach.
"Agreed. I told her. We mustn't judge, but we must also walk with caution. Especially being a lone mare. I also told her not to slink out like that, to at least tell us where she is going." The snow white mare decided to add more jewels.
"Yeah, she must have been upset by my drinking, and decided she needed some space. I just need her to understand, she is always so cautious. I don't know why she is being so reckless today." Rainbow Dash was getting annoyed having to sit for so long.
"Your actions hold such a heavy weight on her thinking process. Just try and be a little more warm in your approach." She clapped her hooves together in approval. "Perfect, yes, just perfect. As always!"
Rainbow Dash admired her awesome yet proper look. Rarity changed out the pink scarf to a darker blue, and it rested around her neck proudly. Her mane done up in a bun, with a few strands running down, as each color sparkled with jewels. "I got to admit Rarity, you are a master of the art. Thanks." She gave her friend a strong hug.
Fluttershy quietly approached, head held low. "My goodness Rarity, you sure now how to do so much with so few articles and accessories."
Rainbow jumped a little in her seat, not even noticing Fluttershy being so close. Rarity took a bow. "Now for Pinkie Pie, then I can start on our dear Fluttershy. I believe maybe you two could use some alone time."Both pegasi nodded in thanks, and blushed when their eyes met. Rainbow suddenly felt 100% sober.
Fluttershy felt her legs grow weak. "I do feel bad for saying all those mean things to her. How do I start with this apology?" She looked her strong lover up and down, a smile sneaking onto her face. "She does look wonderful"
"Rainbow, you look stunning tonight." She finally managed. She still sat, slouched over, looking small.
"Well, gee, thanks. I gotta agree with you. But I know I'll be average once Rarity is done with you." Rainbow returned the compliment. She smiled to see the animal lover hide her blush behind her pink mane. "Why do I ever have to see such a pretty face sad. I'm sorry Flutters."
"I just wanted to tell you, I'm really sorry for making you worry the way I did. I shouldn't have left on my own. And at least tell you where I was going. Anything could have happened, and none of you would have ever known. I am a stranger to this new place after all." Fluttershy apologized, doing her best to keep eye contact.
"I'm sure glad I didn't have to go first." Rainbow smiled, bringing her face closer. "Baby, it's okay. I wasn't mad, really. I was just so scared something had happened to you." She grabbed the smaller yellow hoof in her two blue ones.
"When I was racing around looking for you, I wanted to cry. I was so worried. I can't lose you Fluttershy, I just can't." Dash's breathing got harder, even though she tried to control it.
Fluttershy felt her eyes water. One drop fell as she sniffled. "Oh no, I'm so sorry I did that to you Dashie, my love. I never meant to. I was being careless." The skittish filly felt her heart beat faster at the feeling of her body being engulfed in a wing hug. She felt so much stronger in there.
"I also want to say how sorry I am to have said so many mean things to you. I just don't know what came over me. It's never a bother to take care of you. I just worry about you getting into trouble if you start drinking too much. But I never should have been such a meenie." Fluttershy cuddled, trying to hold back the tears.
"Shh, it's ok. I don't blame you. I was kind of being a jerk earlier. I do get a bit cocky when I have a few drinks in me. I can't say those words didn't hurt." She bit her lip at feeling her lover's smaller frame quiver in sadness. "But maybe I needed to hear it, from you. To get it through my thick skull. You know me, rock head."
Fluttershy nuzzled in her marefriend's neck. "I love my rock head. I am so sorry to have been a jerk."
Rainbow Dash smiled and held her precious pegasus tighter. "And I love my pretty little flower. Now AJ and I were talking. I made a promise to myself, in front of her, that I won't go over board with the drinking tonight. It wouldn't be fair to any of you, and especially you baby."
Fluttershy had the most pleased smile on her face. "Really Dashie?"
"Really. And don't feel obligated to be keeping an eye on me the whole night. If you need a break from me, or just want to mingle with some new ponies, go ahead. Just stay close, so I can keep an eye on you. Even if Twi says the place is secured, I want us all to be safe." Rainbow Dash raised a hoof to make it official.
Fluttershy clanked her hoof against her beloved's. "Deal. But don't expect to lose me that easily. You know I'm no good at parties unless I'm at your side." She brought her face closer.
Rainbow smiled her cheeks growing red. She lowered her face for a sweet and loving kiss. They remained in their embrace for a few blessed moments until they smelled the familiar scent of bubble gum and cotton candy about them. They opened their eyes to see big radiant blue ones right next to their faces. They screamed in unison.
"Hi! Oh, I'm so happy wappy you two love bird ponies made up and are now back to doing your cute little kissy wissy faces!" Pinkie Pie sat, looking like a beautiful pink model.
Rainbow Dash pushed her a small distance away. "Remember the talk Twilight had with you about personal space Pinks? And can you stop with the mushy sugar coated vocab. It's making me gag!"
All the mares laughed as they continued to get ready for the party.
Evening finally came around. They were all at the benefit. Applejack seemed a bit uneasy at all the ponies in the one room, but was soon comforted when she felt the delicate kisses on her cheek. "Come with me my dear, let's make our way to the dance floor." Rarity suggested as she waited for Applejack to follow.
"Will ya both be alright while I start cuttin a rug with my little princess here?" The blonde asked, a smile on her face.
Rainbow gave a one sided grin as she kept her wing draped over her marefriend. "I think we got this under control. Shy and I are just gonna head to the bar real quick. See you two crazy kids soon." The two rival friends winked and parted.
Fluttershy was mindful of the rabbit in her tail as she let her beloved lead the way. She felt her nerves get the best of her before they even entered the club. Just the sound of the party got her breathing harder. When Rainbow suggested they had a few drinks to help loosen her up, Fluttershy agreed. Before she knew it, there was a margarita in front of her. She looked lovingly to her rainbow hero. "Thanks for slowing down for me Dashie."
Rainbow Dash gleefully slurped her strawberry drink with one hoof, as she pulled her smaller companion closer with the other. "Baby, any pace is good with you in my embrace. But maybe you can hurry with that drink before the dance floor gets too full."
Both giggled as they noticed Twilight try to introduce herself to the mayor with an over excited Pinkie Pie at her side. Rainbow was picking up on how close the two were getting. Close for Pinkie anyway. Her thoughts were shaken when she felt timid hooves tug at her foreleg.
"All done sweetie. Ready to get jiggy with me?" Fluttershy asked, a cute strawberry mustache on her lips.
Rainbow smiled happily, licking her lover's face and pulling her in for a kiss. They trotted to the dance floor, feeling giddy. Rainbow gave a small bow, which Fluttershy returned, and they began their fun and fast dance. "Tonight is perfect Shy."
Fluttershy let her head fall back as she felt her lover pick her up into a flight and swing her around in a circle. She held on tight as she giggled her delight. "It sure is Dashie."
They danced for what felt like hours. Soon both mares were breathing heavier, sweating, and manes messed up from all the fun. They stumbled to the bar to find their four friends waiting for them.
Pinkie was all smiles, clapping her hooves slowly. "Bravo you two. You both were putting on quite the show. Who knew Rainbow Dash could dance so gracefully in the air while holding Fluttershy!"
"Shy can bring out a lot of surprises in me." Rainbow explained. She yelped when she felt a jab in her ribs. She looked to see a dizzy and angry Angel.
Fluttershy held him in her hooves. "Oh no, Angel! I forgot you were back there. Are you ok baby?"
Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes. "Awe, he'll be fine. I've seen him dish out worse. Get him a beer, and me too bartender!" Rainbow hollered, the fun night making her feel like a teenager again.
Fluttershy held her nauseous bunny on her wings. "I better take him to the bathroom to freshen up and have some water. I'll be back, girls."
Rainbow hopped off her stool. "I'll go with you Shy. Wait up, let me just get my beer."
"Oh no Rainbow. You enjoy yourself. Have those few shots I heard you whispering to Pinkie Pie about. I'll be right back."
Rainbow Dash blushed, but returned to her seat. "Are you sure?"
Fluttershy returned quickly to nuzzle her fast flyer. "Yes, and order me one while you are at it."
Twilight and Rarity got up themselves. "Don't worry Rainbow Dash, I chatted with the security. No abnormal sightings yet. Besides, there are so many ponies here, nothing will happen. Now Rarity, there is a really important unicorn I have been wanting to introduce you to, who is having a wardrobe malfunction."
Twilight's voice drifted off as Rainbow stared at two double shots in front of her. "Well, Shy said I could. And it is an open bar!"
"Don't go pushin it RD. Remember, you wanted to show Fluttershy you were more responsible." AJ reminded her, taking one shot away.
Fluttershy hurried to the bathroom, politely trying to push through the crowd until she decided to take flight, holding her sweet rabbit in her hooves. "I'm sorry we danced too hard for you Angel Baby. Hold on, we are almost there."
She rushed into the filly's room, sprinkling water on her animal friend and rubbing his back. He began to look spryer as he let the fresh scent of soap awaken his senses. He stared at his owner as she held a tiny cup of water to his mouth. "Feeling better?"
He nodded as he hopped a little. He was interested to see all the new sights, and check out the food bar.
"Okay dearie. Let's head back to the bar. I'm sure the nice bartender has some carrot juice." As Fluttershy let her passenger hop on her back, she heard the music get louder. This was definitely more of a Pinkie style party than the Gala. She stepped out of the bathroom, a confident smile on, as she moved her bangs from her face. Everypony was cheering at the center as a young stallion just proposed to his marefriend.
Fluttershy felt her cheeks grow red as her wings fluttered in excitement. Her joy turned to pain as she was sidelined, a rag on her face. Everything grew dark as the room spinned. No one could hear her muffled screams over the cheers as she blacked out. Before she hit the ground, she was pushed into an empty room, as the door slammed shut.
