Chapter 9: Shot Dead

The female voice rang over the Doctors ear but it was very faint. The Doctor quickly concluded that the voice was from the Batcave and Batman was likely too close to the jammers to hear it. The Doctor took the earpiece out of his ear and started to work on it with his sonic screwdriver. This caught the already bored Dash's attention.

"Hey, what are you doing? Don't we need to be careful with these things so we don't break them?" The Doctor didn't bother looking up as he was too busy with the device in his hand. "I'm trying to increase the signal. I would have done this for everyone earlier but they've already left. I'll do yours in a minute."

"Alright, but don't break it. It's awesome and I'll need to make sure Carnage doesn't get himself killed." Dash handed the Doctor her earpiece and the Doctor worked on the pair for a moment before handing it back to her. They both placed their respective earpiece back on and heard the female voice come out a lot clearer.

"Bruce, Are you there? Please respond, Alfred told me that we lost your signal. Hang on, there's two here with earpieces in Penguins museum." The Doctor didn't waste any time in responding. "Yes, hello there. This is the Doctor, you remember me don't you, Barbra?"

"Doctor? What are you doing there? And who's the other person with you?"

"Oh this? This is Rainbow Dash. Has Alfred not filled you in on any of this yet?"

"No, not really. When I got here I asked if anything weird had happened and he just laughed. Hold up, what kind of name is 'Rainbow Dash'?" This offended the young Pegasus who retorted "What's that supposed to mean? And what kind of name is 'Barbra'?

The Doctor tried to keep the peace between the pair. "Now ladies, lets calm down." It didn't work. "Excuse me but Barbra is a common and pretty normal name, Rainbow Dash sounds like some kind of hippy."

"My mom named me Rainbow Dash and it's an awesome name. That name is known all around Equestria."

"What the heck is Equestria?"

"Just where I came from, duh. You're only talking to the most awesome Pegasus in the multiverse."

"… Sure you're a Pegasus and I'm a flying monkey."

The Doctor felt the need to comment on this. "Actually, Barbra she is a Pegasus. Look, Alfred can fill you in on the details later but right now you need to tell us if there's a problem."

"Actually there is an interesting situation. Despite the signal jammer someone has released a distress signal on all frequencies. It isn't really encrypted but the guards haven't picked up on it. I believe it was intended for Batman."

Dash was right on the ball with this. "Well he's not available. So I guess we'll just have to take care of it."

"What? No, you two cant. This could be a trap so wait for Bruce to come back and…" Dash showed her disagreement. She never was one to keep her opinions to herself. "Screw that, B-man and Carnage have enough to deal with right now. What do you say Doctor?" The Doctor considered his options carefully. If they stayed they would avoid the wrath of the Dark Knight and maybe get the drop on the Penguin. If they followed this signal then they might be heading into a trap. A normal person would have said that they should stay. The Doctor wasn't a normal person. "You're right, Dash. Alright 'Oracle' were going to the location of the distress signal. If Batman and Carnage come back after they have destroyed the jammers tell them where we are."

"Y-you can't. I won't give you the location, Bruce will be pissed if you go and I'm not going to be part of you two getting yourselves killed." The Doctor was pointing his screwdriver in the air and when he turned it off he wore a smug grin. "Actually after synchronising my screwdriver with the Bat computer through the communicators. I don't need you to tell me the location. Are you ready, Dash? We're going near the dock areas."

"On it Boss. By the way, have I ever told you that you're kind of awesome in an egghead sort of way?"

"No, but I won't stop you." Barbra had one last go to convince them to stay. "Listen, maybe if you stay…" But Rainbow Dash was having none of it. "Cram it, were going and you can't stop us. Let's go, Doctor."

Rainbow Dash turned off her com device and the Doctor did the same. They left through the front door of the museum with haste.

"C'mon Doctor, it can't be that hard to climb a building." The Doctor wasn't inherently a violent Timelord; however he wanted to smack Dash around the head for that remark. However, his hands were occupied with holding on for dear life on the edge of a building.

"I'm not Spider-man Dash. I'm doing the best I can here."

"Don't you mean, Spider-mare?"

"We'll talk about that later, Dash." The Doctor was nearly at the top now. Some scaffolding had helped him up three quarters of the way but now he had to climb with the assistance of cracks and bits sticking out of the building. Dash was hovering next to him so she could make a quick save in case he fell.

While the Doctor climbed he thought back to the message. He was able to decode it and he configured it to play over their communicators.

"Please, I'm on the roof of the old Gotham FM building. Someone's after me. I-I don't know who. He's going to find me, I need held." The message was that of a genuinely terrified man and the Doctor intended to do everything he could to help him. That was driving him up this building.

Finally, the Doctors fingertips reached the cold edge of the building. With every ounce of strength he had and Dash willing him on he fought against the cold and was able to pull himself up. With a grunt he laid there on his front while his legs dangled off the edge.

He could see the giant antenna with 'G C R' which stood for Gotham City Radio above him. This was just another building that had to be abandoned and was no longer in use after Strange 'acquired' the area. Dash had joined him at the top and was about to tell him to get up when they heard a voice in front of them.

"Wah, who are you?" The Doctor got to his feet and faced the man who was now on his back.

The man was wearing some warm clothing but was clearly not enough for the intense cold outside. Blue jeans, green hoodie, brown boots, a blue shirt and a terrified expression was all he wore. The man was clearly panicked and the Doctor turned to Dash.

"You should let me handle this. Diplomacy isn't your strong point." He told her. The Doctor slowly approached the man and spoke in a soft tone.

"You're the man who let out the distress message, yes? Don't be alarmed, were not going to hurt you. My name is the Doctor and my friend here is Rainbow Dash. We know Batman and we can help you."

The other man calmed down a little, he stood up to face them. He actually looked a little relived now to have someone here with him. Dash wanted to know what could have this man so frightened.

"What are you doing up here? It's freezing, shouldn't up be somewhere safe?" The Doctor wanted to remind her that they were in the prison form of hell but he resisted.

"There's someone after me, he's trying to kill me." The man spoke very quickly, like he was in a rush to get away again. The Doctor then asked "Who?"

"I think he works for Strange." The Doctor and Rainbow Dash gave each other a quick glance as the man continued. "That bastard. Has me working on that damn tower of his for six months and no sooner is it all operational he has me thrown in here." The Doctor took a moment to think about the information he had been given. No obvious Batman villain came to mind so he asked another question.

"What were you working on?"

"There are a number of signal relay points at the top of the tower. The specifications…" The man never finished his sentence. The bullet that had travelled over 100 miles per hour and collided with his brain prevented him from doing so.

Dash let out a small yelp as she flew back while the Doctor ducked down. He quickly realised though that the assassin had already taken his leave as they were not his targets. The Doctor waved Dash to join him and she did so rather gingerly.

The Doctor took in the scene in front of him. The corpse was leaning against a small vent with some blood splattered against it. He quickly made a decision on what was to be done next.

"Dash, I need you to remain calm. We have to stop whoever this assassin is." The Doctor took out his screwdriver and put it in the correct setting. He scanned the air and seemed satisfied with what he found.

"Alright, the bullet went that way. I want you to follow the trail and scan the bullet and the dent it made." Dash didn't argue and nodded at the Doctor. She flew in the direction she was pointed too.

The Doctor breathed a sigh and started to turn his communicator back on. I hope Batman and Carnage have taken out the disruptor in this area. Otherwise, this will be a lot more difficult. Suddenly, Oracle could be heard over the device.

"Doctor, what's going on? I'm getting reports of a sniper bullet being fired in your vicinity." The Doctor nodded to himself.

"Good, it appears the disruptor in this area was shutdown. The man who let out the distress signal has just been killed. Has there been any other reports of people being killed by a sniper."

"Give me a minute… the city has such a large death toll that it's hard… here we go. There have at least been three other deaths. If only we had the bullet. We could use the bat computer to…"

"… To locate a suspect who uses that type. Strange must have hired the best and normally professional assassins like to have some sort of trademark." The Doctor then spotted Dash flying back towards him and judging by her expression she got what he needed.

"I'm going to send you information about the bullet in a second Oracle." Dash landed next to the Doctor and gave him back the screwdriver.

"There, I scanned that bullet. But why did you want me to do it?" Dash asked.

"You will see in a moment Dash. Barbra, I'm sending you the info now." The Doctor pressed his screwdriver against the communicator and then asked "Did you get it?"

"Yes I did. Y'know I'm still cross with you two and you better tell you're Pegasus friend to turn her communicator back on because… oh dear." Dash had turned her communicator back on and asked.

"What? What's wrong?"

"It's Deadshot. Deadshot is in Arkham City."

The Doctor then realised how foolish he had been. The signs had been clearly there but he had practically ignored them. If Deadshot was in the city then things had just gotten a lot more dangerous. Dash looked up at the Doctor with confusion written all over her face.

"Who's Deadshot?" She asked.

"He's a master assassin. He was once famed for never missing a single shot. We need to stop him now. Oracle, can you reach Batman or Carnage?"

"No, sorry I can't get a hold of either yet."

"Then we'll have to go it alone Dash. Oracle, give me a full analysis of the weapon he's using."

"Hmm, let's see here. Were in luck, he recently had the weapon fixed at a black market sector in Gotham. It's pretty standard actually but it does have traces of a rust like metallic compound." The Doctor thought for a moment before coming to a conclusion.

"He must have stored his weapon in Arkham before getting it fixed. If we find where that substance is common. Then we find his storage and perhaps that will give us a clue to where we go next."

"Just did a scan and one spot in particular is sticking out. The power substations near the edge of Arkham. It's not far from your location."

Dash flew up and proclaimed "Then what are we standing around for? Let's get him." Dash zoomed off and the Doctor waited a moment and sure enough, Dash returned. "Um… I don't know where to go."

The Doctor shook his head, unable to keep a smirk forming on his face. "I can show you the way Dash. Let's hurry."

"Carnage log. I currently find myself leaning against a wall, enjoying a delicious sausage bagel. Myself and Batman just took part in a super epic team-up where we took out a number of Penguin goons that set up disruptors, following orders from their boss, the Penguin. I do not like this Penguin. He gives us British folk a bad name. Batman is finishing off the last disruptor. I'm trying to decide what to call this little adventure. I've narrowed it down to two options. The first, 'Mr. Carnage II: Electric Boogaloo.' The second is 'The Bat, The Doctor, The Rainbow and Mr. Carnage'. I'm sort of going off the second one, it sounds like a bad fanfiction. In fact this entire adventure is like a bad fanfiction, what if… nah, that's just silly. Batman is currently giving me that 'what the fuck are you doing?' face and honestly. I don't appreciate that. Can a man not monologue to himself while talking into his hand? The rudeness of some people these days. Batman is generally moody though, I'm not sure if he's slept with Catwoman yet. To be honest, who wouldn't? I would. Multiple times. In various different places and positions. I mean me and Dash had plenty of that. We only started going at it two days before I kicked Spike's ass but my god she was worse than me. Couldn't even eat my waffles without her jumping on me. Sweet ass though. Although it's hard to miss when she takes off because the vibration…"

"CARNAGE!"

"Yes, Bats?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Nothing that you need to worry about, so have you shut it down?"

Batman punched through the screen of the disruptor, he rummaged a little bit before finding the key circuit to keep it going before tearing it out. Carnage stepped over a knocked out goon and walked up to Batman for an answer.

"Yes, that was the last disruptor. Let's get back to the museum so…"

The voice of the Penguin suddenly rang out over their com pieces.

"Have you set up that last disruptor?"

The voice of what was most likely a grunt of the Penguin responded.

"Yes Sir Mr. Cobblepot. We set it up where you told us, in the abandoned subway."

"Good, don't let Batman destroy that one as well. We've lost the other three. Under no circumstances is he allowed to get in this museum or heads will roll. You can guess who will be first on the chopping block."

Batman and Carnage looked at each other and simply nodded before taking off. The only thought that went through Carnage's head was I'm sure Dash and the Doctor are fine. I mean what kind of trouble could they have gotten themselves in to?

While lying downwards, Batman realised something.

"Wait a second, where did you get a sausage bagel?"

It had been difficult to get to the location that was marked on the map but the Doctor and Rainbow Dash had made. In pretty good time as well. Dash was fuming, the idea of another killing people as a job was all kinds of wrong to her. She had never heard of a hitpony in Ponyville and she was thankful for it.

The issue was that while Dash could get to the roof, the Doctor couldn't. The pair decided to send Dash over with the screwdriver so she could undo the bolts that held the maintenance hatch in place. The Doctor stood on the other build facing the building that Dash was on. He couldn't get there because the building was surrounded by water. The Doctor called out from his building. The cold night's air and the cool winds partially muffled his voice.

"Now remember, the screwdriver is already in the correct settings. Just press the button when the screwdriver is next to the bolts and they should unscrew."

It was rather fiddly for Rainbow Dash to use, considering the fact she had hoofs but she managed and slowly the lid of started to come off. Eventually, the last bolt was removed and the maintenance hatch fell open.

"I got it!" Called out Rainbow Dash.

"Do you see anything that could give us a clue to who he might be after next?"

Rainbow Dash scanned the interior of the box with her eyes. A sniper rifle was leaning against the side, presumably a spare in case anything happened to the one Deadshot was currently using. Cartridges and electronics were all at the bottom. There was also an unusual looking device with traces of light coming from the top. This was definitely where Deadshot kept his things but one thing stood at to Dash. A table had been set up in the centre and on top of it was a little screen. It looked like one of those phones that Carnage had shown her only this didn't have any numbers. She picked it up with her mouth and flew back to the Doctor with it. The Doctor spotted the device she was carrying.

"Hello, what's this then?" He took it from her and started to fiddle with it. "It appears to be a PDA, Dash. Their like organizers and can be used as Journals." Oracle had been listening in.

"Does it have anything important on it? Anything that could give us a clue to who his next target is?"

"Just give me a moment I think I've found… oh dear." The Doctor had stumbled across a list, a very specific list. The first three people on the list had the words eliminated beside them and the most recent one was the man both he and Dash met. "I have a list of people I believe Deadshot is meant to kill." Dash had a look over the Doctors shoulder.

"We met that gut earlier. Batman is even on this list but they also have Bruce Wayne before him." She said. Oracle had one question she needed answering.

"But who is his next target." The Doctor scrolled up to find the victim.

"It's a man called, Jack Ryder."

"Jack Ryder. That's the news reporter that was thrown in with Bruce." The Doctor then realised something.

"He's working to a tight schedule. Ryder's location is here as well and he's going to kill him in 5 minutes if we don't stop him." Barbra's console then came to life with a very familiar signal.

"Hang on a second, I think I have Bruce's signal again…"

Batman was finishing off the last disruptor. Meanwhile Carnage was cleaning up the fallen goons. Carnage was looking over the scene before him, fallen Penguin goons were all about in various different positions and it made Carnage chuckle to himself. Tiredness had not affected him, despite how late the hour was.

"Hey, Bats! Do you think the others are alright?" he asked.

"I'm not sure. Wouldn't be surprised if they went off by themselves." Batman replied.

"By the way, why did you destroy that container earlier?" Batman remembered what happened with his meeting with Bane earlier.

"It contained Titan" he replied. "It's a powerful drug that can enhance ones strength at the cost of their mind. I met an old… acquaintance who told me about it."

"You mean Bane." Bane scowled and looked at the smiling detective. "Oh come one. It's obvious. The Titan formula is clearly a modified version of Venom. I know my stuff man. Trust me when I say that I am no stranger to this world."

"Yet you have never been here."

"Listen I will…" Then the voice of Oracle came over their coms.

"Bruce, Bruce! Are you there? We need your help."

"Nice to see you could join us Barbra. This is Mr. C…"

"Yes I know about him, Bruce but we don't have any time. Dead Shot is on the city and he's going to assassinate Jack Ryder. I've put his location on your map. Quickly, GO!" Carnage had heard the conversation and turned to Batman.

"Well we better…" When he turned though, Batman was nowhere in sight.

Deadshot wasn't exactly thrilled about his target tonight. He felt that a lousy reporter like Jack Ryder was a bit below his pay grade. Still, money was money so why should he complain. After this though came two big jobs. One was the billionaire, Bruce Wayne. A pompous rich boy in his opinion that he would take a great amount of pleasure ridding the world of. After that was a personal score, Batman. He still remembered the day like it was yesterday. He had that politician in his site, another victim in his perfect no miss record. Then Batman arrived.

He spotted Ryder attempting to warm his hands against a makeshift bonfire in a trash can. He started to set up the rifle and had it pointed for a head shot on his victim. However he then heard footsteps behind him. His breathing slowed, his heartbeat slowed and he reached for his arm gun.

The gun that was fitted around his arm shot behind him, causing the pair sneaking up behnd him to take cover.

"I know who you two are. The man in the brown coat and the weird horse thing with him. I'm impressed that you found my stash but I'll be sure to remedy that later. Now please wait a moment. I'm about to kill Mr. Ryder then I'll deal with you two." Deadshot kept his gun pointed their direction while he looked down the scope of his rifle, easing the trigger. "Say goodnight Mr…"

The bullet was fired at an incredible force the bullet could easily tear through any man like he was tissue paper but luckily for Ryder, Batman was at hand. Batman arrived at the nick of time and pushed Ryder out of the way of the speeding bullet. Deadshot couldn't believe it. Again, Batman had done it again.

"You made me miss my target, Batman. I never miss!" Deadshot looked behind him and saw the Doctor poking out from the side but quickly ducking back. He was behind a pillar. "I suppose I'll just have to take out you're little friends here as a consolation."

The Doctor quickly changed where he was. He moved behind a flower arrangement where Dash also hid herself. Deadshot moved to a stage so he could see all around him. The Doctor looked above and spotted a vent that lead right below the assassin. The Doctor knew Batman would be preoccupied so he had to go for it.

"Alright Dash. I know you're afraid but if we work together we can get out of this. You're fast right?" Dash was surprised by his question.

"Did you forget who you're talking to?"

"Do you think you're fast enough to dodge, Deadshot?" Das took a moment to think but a smile inevitably came to her face.

"What do you need me to do?"

"I need you to distract Deadshot for a moment so I can get under him." Without another word said Dash flew upwards with Deadshot spotting her.

"There you are you little freak! I've got you now." The Assassin was taken aback by how fast she was. So fast that he was missing his shots. He never missed his shots. "How are you doing that!?"

She flew down and Deadshot thought he could still win yet little did he know that the damage had been done. The Doctor was now below him in a small pathway, slowly edgeing his way below. Deadshot was standing over a grate, blissfully unaware of the fate that awaited him. Deadshot continued to taunt them.

"I can play this game all night. Hey where your friend in the coat. To chicken to face me?" Dash wanted to buck him for that comment. "After I kill you two. I'll kill you, then Bruce Wayne and then the Bat." The doctor was almost ready. Deadshot's foot was off the way the vent opened. All the doctor had to do was lift it open and then he could grab his leg. Deadsot made one last taunt. "Strange has also made me an extra offer. A bit more cash if I take out the one with the facepaint."

Dash lost it at that comment and she charged at Deadshot. She was in her sights and a disturbing smile reached his lips as she went straight for him but then he felt his leg starting to get dragged down the grate.

"Wh-what the hell?" He saw the Doctor holding on to his leg and then the Doctor called out.

"DASH! DO IT NOW!" Deadshot turned straight into a pair of hoofs colliding with his face. Deadshot fell back as he also fell out of consciousness.

The Doctor let go and crawled through the vent to the surface where he fell on his back, panting hard. Relief washed over him as Dash joined him, lying down beside him. The two stayed there for what seemed like an eternity as sweat rolled down them. The Doctor laughed.

"So we ran around the city for at least half an hour and we took out a master assassin. That wasn't so hard was it?" Dash gave him an annoyed look at first but the façade broke as she burst out laughing with him. The Doctor dragged her into a hug but the a sight above them made Dash go wide eyed.

Carnage and Batman stood above them. Dash realised what this might look like. The pair were out of breath, a little sweaty from running around everywhere and were embracing each other. Carnage and Batman kept their unreadable faces until Carnage asked a question.

"You guys didn't have sex, did you?"
