Chapter 1: 1. Chapter 1
Load Full Story Next ChapterZip! I closed up my backpack as I walked out the door...They were out drunk again. I was running away from my dreaded past, from my family, from my life... It was too much to take. "Where are you going?" Wave asked me. "I don't know." I replied. "But I'm leaving."
"I'm coming with you." he announced, grabbing his handy backpack and began trotting next to me. I could always rely on Wave. I flipped my long black hair out of my face, letting the world see my icy blue eyes. I pulled my hoodie closer to me, covering my pale skin. Wave waited for the bus with me, not saying a word. I watched his short brown hair and green eyes contently. Wave didn't talk to anyone, only me. He liked to express himself through drawing, I did the same with music. I remembered my tattoo- I gently caressed my shoulder. I got that tattoo two years ago, I was fifteen. I treasured it like an old friend.
Bus 48 finally showed up in the busy New York City street. Not many people got on it-it was headed to the country. It costed $8. I gave the guy a $20 bill. He was about to protest, but I interrupted. "Keep the change, and whenever you're having a crappy day, just remember the favor." I told him before sitting in the back next to Wave. He had his notebook out again- doodling like crazy. I smiled, rolling my eyes. I went through my bag, checking I had everything. In the smallest pouch there were socks, underwear, money, and a pocketknife. In the next, there was food. In the last, were clothes and some more money. I also had water bottles in the side pouches. I took my iPod out of my back pocket, put in an earbud, and listened to whatever song came on.
Wave was still scribbling away, until finally stopping to stare at his work. He shoved the book towards me. "No regrets?" he asked. "No regrets." I replied smoothly.

Wave fell asleep to avoid car sickness. I zoned out completely- thinking of our new life, until the bus driver shouted "End of the line!" We, along with a few girls our age got off. As Wave and I began walking towards the dirt road, we heard the driver yell "Hey,kid!" I turned, and he threw a package at me. I stared at it and he said, "You'll need it." before driving off. "What the hell was that about?" Wave asked. I shrugged, dumping the package in my bag. "Let's go." I told him. We were somewhere upstate.
We found an empty old barn. I lie down, closing my eyes as Wave scribbled away, probably drawing our surroundings. I drifted off into sleep, waking up to Wave singing "Home On The Range" terribly. "Wave, what the fuck?" I yelled. "Well, A, I'm bored as hell, B, you wouldn't wake up, and C, I'm freaking HUNGRY." he responded. I rolled my eyes, throwing a muffin at him. "OMG THANKS!" he squealed in a girly voice. I chuckled, crunching on an apple. I gulped down water. "NO FUCKING FAIR! I WANT SOME!" he shouted childishly. I tossed a bottle of water over to him. He sipped it thirstily.
"We should get going." I said, standing. "I thought we were staying here." he thought aloud. "It just doesn't feel...right." I said. He nodded, following me out the door. We walked for half an hour, with Wave still doodling like hell. "Holy shit!" I yelled. There was a burning church on a hillside up ahead. There was a bunch of kids and adults surrounding it.
I sprinted toward it, Wave by my side. "What's going on?" I asked. "We were on a field trip, and something exploded in the church. Don't worry, we're all fine." said a rather fat man. "Richard, some of the children are missing." said an adult woman. "I'm sure they're just wandering around." said Richard, the fat man. "I can't find them anywhere." she replied worriedly. I was already halfway to the church, I climbed through a small door. Wave followed. Sickening smoke penetrated my lungs. "Where do you think they are?" he asked. "I don't know." I coughed. We had left our stuff outside- no excess weight. We searched, listening. I heard crying. I dragged Wave through the debris. We ran straight into the burning room, the walls collapsing. "We're here to rescue you." I announced heroically. I signaled for Wave to go outside to catch the kids. I gently threw each kid outside, flames quickly eating the church. I managed to get both myself and the last kid outside, when an explosion hit me, causing me to fly out of the window and knock out cold on the grass.
I heard beeping. I awoke in a hospital bed, with Wave and Richard nearby. "What happened?" I coughed. Pain seared through my thighs. "You got second-degree burns, kid. The doctors are gonna fix you up soon." Richard replied. I stared at my elevated legs and groaned. "What's your name anyway, kid?" Richard asked. "Blaze," I replied casually. "How ironic." Richard responded. Wave and I chuckled. That was us, Blaze and Wave. The doctor came in. "Hello, Blaze. We need to do some surgery and contact your-" "NO! Please don't contact my parents...Look, I'll pay for my hospital visit and whatnot if I have to, or I'll walk out right now, just don't tell them." I implored. He shared a look with Richard. "Under the circumstances, I'll allow it... Free of charge." said the doctor. "Thank you." I said, able to breathe. Hmm... Karma is in a good mood today.
They performed the surgery in a few hours, but I had to stay in the hospital overnight. I sat in bed, writing lyrics onto my notebook.
There's a fire
Starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark.
Finally, I can see you crystal clear.
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare.
See how I'll leave, with every piece of you.
Don't underestimate the things that I will do.
"New lyrics?" Wave asked. I nodded solemnly. I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. "Just go to sleep." he reassured me. So I slept, waking up randomly in the middle of the night, before drifting off again. Wave shook me awake sometime later. "Hmph?" I muttered, sitting up. The nurse gave me breakfast and treated my legs. Wave and I left the hospital several hours later. "Why didn't you get hurt?" I asked. He shrugged. "I didn't get burnt, just got a few cuts and a big bruise... I landed on a rock." he explained. I shook it off.
We took a cab back to the country. It gave the guy a twenty dollar bill and hopped out. We walked for hours, until we came upon a meadow. There was a well smack in the middle of it. I grabbed my empty bottle, filling it in the well. Wave did the same. As I stood back up, something pushed us in, with us plummeting thousands of feet down into water. My last threads of consciousness were slipping, but my last thought was "Since when are wells so fucking DEEP?"
(Author's Note: I got Wave's drawing from Google, and Blaze's lyrics are from "Rolling In The Deep" by Adele.)
