Before the Presence of Alcohol
Star Grazer was in a field of flowers of all colors and forms. A cool breeze blew through the greenery of the tall grass and trees. Birds were chirping their songs in the distance and animals roamed about. Overall it was a beautiful day. He looked up and saw clouds flow gently by. The expansive blue sky, illuminated by Celestia’s sun, seemed bluer than usual. As a matter of fact… the sun strangely was not generating heat. The clouds glided by but there was no wind. He looked up towards the sun staring directly at it. It did not blind or bother him. As he peered closer a small square of light did in fact bring extreme warmth to him. His left eye felt a little warm at first. As he stared the light became brighter and brighter. Soon his left eye felt as if it was ablaze. It became increasingly hot, hotter, and hotter still! IT burned! It burns! It buuuuurrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnssssssss!!!!
Star Grazer shot awake and rolled away. He looked over to see a small square of intense light shine where his eye was. The entire tent was virtually black save for that intense and small square of light. Not even the tent flap emitted any light. After seeing the bed across from him lacking a certain stallion named Barry, he walked toward the tent flap and opened it.
The light of day blinded him for a moment before he saw Barry, Light Dasher, and Fluttery chatting around the dead campfire. Their conversation ceased when they took notice of him. They all got up and walked over to him with smiling faces. Fluttery particularly looked overjoyed.
“Three cheers for Star Grazer!” They all yelled in unison. He blushed.
“Aw come on guys. If this is about that mission it was no big deal really.”
The mission from the night before still exhausted him. Star Grazer led a small team of ponies down to the griffon city of Windforge to aid in the rescue of captured hostages. Star Grazer was tasked with creating a distraction to allow Jason, the strange changeling general, and Rainbow Dash, the element of Loyalty, safe passage into the city. They not only took out the griffon resistance but did it with very little casualties on the side of Equestria.
“What are you talking about? You were an important part of the mission! Sure I may have had the same leadership role as you but you were the one who did all the leading!” Star Grazer’s face reddened more.
“Awwww look at him! He’s blushing!” Fluttery kissed Star Grazer on the cheek and Light Dasher hugged him soon after.
“Hehe. Thanks you guys. I don’t deserve this.” Star Grazer looked at Barry.
“Hey don’t look at me! I aint’ givin’ you a kiss.” They all fell on the floor laughing. After a long bout of laughter Star Grazer stood up and slowly regained his composure.
“Hehe all right well I'm hungry. Is the cook awake?”
“I should haha-hope so! It’s the middle of the day!” Light Dasher wiped a tear from her eye.
“Heh ok. I’m gonna' go to the mess hall then.” Fluttery and Light Dasher both hung onto Star Grazer.
“I’ll go with you!” They both said in perfect unison. Light Dasher and Fluttery looked at each other warily then smiled.
“Barry you coming?” The stallion perked up.
“What? Yeah! Here let me get Blueblood. He’s been sleeping like a log. I even splashed him with water.”
“You soaked Blueblood with water? And he didn’t yell at you or anything?” Fluttery’s face showed her shock
“He opened his eyes looked at me rolled over and went back to sleep…” Fluttery deadpanned.
“Let me go get em’. We’ll meet you guys at the hall.”
“Eeyup!” Star Grazer wasn’t sure why he said that. It was almost like he heard it from somewhere.
The food was great! Hay patties with ketchup and boiled cauliflower were In the most abundance. Star Grazer never understood why people disliked cauliflowers so much. It was delicious! A huge buffet was laid out in celebration. A huge shipment of food was sent earlier that day and rumor had it that several crates of cider came in as well.
A few members of Team Green Bean were gorging themselves at this feast. Tank and Eravel seemed to be enjoying themselves especially. They both secluded themselves to a corner with several plates of food around their table. Star Grazer waved at them. They took notice for a split second smiled with stuffed faces and gorged themselves some more. Star Grazer was conflicted at the sight of Eravel’s fish eating. He made it look so good! Yet it used to be a living thing!!!
“Hey Star!” Barry appeared behind Star Grazer.
“Ey!”
“What’s that?” Barry pointed to a… blank wall. When Star Grazer looked down at his plate it was half empty.
“Thanks pal!” He smiled and sat down next to him. Star Grazer chuckled and happily ate more of the cauliflower that everyone refuses to eat!
“Mmmng Light Dasher, you ever did that thing?” Fluttery spoke through mouthfuls of food. Does anypony here hear of manners?!
“No not yet. I will though.” Light Dasher blushed and Fluttery giggled.
“What do you have to do light?” Star Grazer tilted his head curiously.
“Oh nothing!” The two mares giggled again. Star Grazer tilted his head the other way as if it would help him understand their giggling.
The group spent another hour in the mess hall just chatting and having an overall good time. The sun was slowly making its way to the horizon. Star Grazer thought it might be 4 or 5 by now. After their breakfast/lunch or as Star insisted brunch, they all walked back to their tents. Light Dasher and Fluttery continued to whisper and giggle at each other, much to the annoyance of Star Grazer. A college graduate at the most prestigious college in Equestria and he can’t even tell why mares are giggling at him!
Star Grazer lazily walked over to his tent, slowly opening the flap and walking over to his bed. It may have been an hour since that small feast but he still felt bloated. After fluffing his pillow he plopped onto the bed and rested his head on the pillow. His mind slowly started to wander into the hazy void of rest. Soon everything was dark and quiet…
HEY, STAR GRAZER!
So much for dark and quiet. Star Grazer grumpily got up from the comfortable bed and looked outside the tent. Light Dasher was bouncing excitedly up and down. A big grin ran across her face matching Fluttery’s expression next to her. Fluttery seemed just as excited as Light Dasher doing a small trot in place.
“Yes?” He muled. Light Dasher couldn’t contain herself and she burst.
“Wanna’ go to a party with us?” Light Dasher leaned in toward him.
“Huh? What party? Since when are their parties out here for ponies?” Star Grazer looked at the inquisitively.
“Well since that extra shipment of hard cider came in! A group of ponies want to celebrate Team Green Bean!”
“Wanna’ come with us? We already convinced Barry to go!” Barry could be seen behind the two mares. It seems they annoyed him enough to go.
“What about Blueblood?”
“He said he is going to go but not with us. He is a downer anyway! Come on let’s go!” The mares grabbed Star Grazer before he could get away and was dragged away from his comfortable bed.
Confusion
Star Grazer did not particularly like “Parties”. In all honesty he has never been to one. The closest thing was the Grand Galloping Gala and that was more of a social gathering of the rich. Star Grazer was always either too busy, too tired, or too lazy to go to a club or similar place. In this case he was all of those! He doesn’t even know how to dance! He is really shy in big crowds and tends to get dizzy in them. This was like High School all over again!
While Star Grazer had a mental panic attack, Fluttery and Light Dasher were rushing him and Barry onward toward a large tent packed with ponies. As they got closer they noticed several ponies with blush on their faces and mugs in their hooves. They steadied themselves as Star Grazer and Light Dasher walked by receiving a few salutes from some, not all, ponies. It seems someponies are recognizing their rank. He liked this show of respect and saluted back. Light Dasher gave a small nod.
Music played from an unknown source as the group walked into the crowded tent. It was rather dark by the time they got there and several ponies were dancing in the center. A stallion nudged the mare next to him and pointed at Star Grazer. They talked and the mare nodded and disappeared. When she reappeared she was carrying three mugs of what was presumably cider. She walked up to the group and blushed as Star made eye contact with her.
“Congratulations! We heard that you saved those ponies in Windforge!” She handed them all a mug saving Star Grazer’s for last.
“Well we didn’t save them; we more helped to save them.” Star Grazer smiled and took the mug making the mare blush and giggle. When he finishes sorting out how to feel about Cheery he will have to see why mares act strange around him.
He slowly sipped at the mug and looked around for a secluded place. He found an empty corner of the tent and made his way toward it. Several ponies patted him on the back and cheered at him as he passed by. He just wants to be left alone right now! He is most definitely in no condition to be “partying”. Light Dasher probably thought that this would cheer him up. Some more cider would cheer him up. He didn’t even realize it but he was sitting on an empty crate with an empty mug of cider. He looked around for more cider and saw a makeshift bar of wooden crates. It was directly across the tent. He groaned.
Light Dasher didn’t even notice the absence of Star Grazer. She was too busy indulging herself on mug after mug of cider. The bartender was actually nice this time. He let her get more cider when she downed her fifth mug. Several ponies stared in awe as she downed mug after mug of cider. At the tenth mug of cider however the bartender stopped handing her cider. Only reason why was because there wouldn’t be enough for everypony else.
Light Dasher now bored and feeling warm decided to look for Star Grazer. She didn’t have to go particularly far when she spotted him drifting through the happy herd of ponies. He looked as if he was defeated and held an empty mug in his mouth, much in contrast to the room’s vibe. She really was hoping that bringing him to this party would help him. Light Dasher remembered the night before. He cried and cried for at least an hour. Then he suddenly just stopped and acted like nothing happened and went to his tent.
“Hey Star? You ok?” Star Grazer nodded and moved toward a less populated area of the bar. He sat down against it looking out toward the group of ponies chatting and having a good time. His facial expression was blank and neutral. Occasionally his mouth would frown but almost immediately revert to its level state. She stared at him for a while before she plopped herself down next to him. He looked in her general direction before trying to slide away from her. She moved closer and he shied away more until he was stuck between her and the bar.
“What that one mare said was horrible. She should have never said that stuff to you.” She reached out an affectionate hoof but was only rebuffed. He looked out toward the crowd then up at the bar.
“I’m fine. I’m just not a party person is all.” His voice was beginning to break before he stood up and got two mugs of cider from the bartender. Light Dasher reached a hoof out expecting the cold of the mug. Instead she grabbed at empty air as he downed the two mugs almost immediately letting out a long sigh. He proceeded to get up and walk somewhere. Confused Light Dasher followed.
Light Dasher could feel the alcohol taking effect. She felt really warm and her mind was beginning to swim with the music and the walking Star Grazer. He stopped to talk to somepony. A slightly blurry Rainbow Dash was standing next to a slightly blurry Jason. There’s something that they are hiding. They might be romantically involved. That was the popular rumor floating around. Her attention snapped back to Star Grazer when he mentioned some kind of battle.
"Yeah, twenty dead ponies as a result." Jason said.
"So how exactly did you and your team take out all those griffins?" Light Dasher thought it cute how awkward Star Grazer truly is.
"Teamwork and planning. And futuristic weapons." He shrugged. "I didn't really bring it with me, but it fires metal weights at high speeds. It was causing all the boom noises." He turned back to the table. "You still got that machete, Tank?" Star Grazer seemed satisfied. Light Dasher leaned in toward his ear.
“Hey Star, I think we should probably go.” She began to walk away. At least she thought she was walking. She was actually stumbling everywhere. Star was confused a moment before following her outside the tent.
“Sorry Star.”
“For what?” He really did seem confused.
“For bringing you to this party. I thought it would cheer up.” Light Dasher hung her head and sighed.
“Nonsense! I may not be a party person but I greatly appreciate the gesture.” He smiled sincerely. She could not tell if he was blushing from the alcohol or some other reason.
“Well I'm sorry anyway. Do you want a hug?” Light Dasher was surprised when he quickly hugged her. She was shocked at first then she hugged him back, keeping their embrace. She could feel the heat of Star Grazer radiating into her. She felt happy in his hold. She didn’t understand why. It must be the alcohol. She really should learn to control herself around alcohol. Star Grazer broke the warm embrace and walked away. Light Dasher was never more confused about him then now.
The Green Bay Pa
A field of flowers. A soft breeze blew through the trees of the valley below. Star Grazer stood atop the top the grassy hill. A pink petal fell from a nearby tree landing into the reflective pool of water by the cottage down in the valley. Birds could be heard chirping through the whispery wind. The air carried the scent of freshly baked bread and a mare was attending a garden by the cottage. She was a Pegasus and wore a frock that covered most of her body. The dress was blue. She knew that was his favorite color. A dirt road winded through the valley toward a distant town. Lily Pines. A small suburban town lying some distance from the city of Maycomb, Whinnysota. The state belonged to Equestria but it was not very heavily influenced by Canterlot’s politics.
The mare turned around and waved at him from down below. He couldn’t see her face and she was saying something to him. He couldn’t really tell. He strained to hear. He tried moving down toward the cottage but his feet wouldn’t move. A strange force was keeping him in place and he felt compelled to stay where he was. The wind blew in his direction and he heard something faintly in it. Between the sound of wind and trees rustling, a small whispered voice of the mare.
‘I love you’
Star Grazer woke up with tears in his eyes. He wiped them away before a sharp pain hit his head. It hurt really badly and he felt horrible. A hangover… Just what he needed… He slowly got up and groaned. Barry was snoring calmly across the tent, much to his misery. He just wanted every noise to just stop. With another groan he slowly removed himself from the bed and looked toward the tent opening. It was either really late or super early. He walked outside being met with a blast of cold wind.
Cold, hung over, and shivering he decided to take a walk because what the heck. He walked aimlessly through the camps sea of tents. A few ponies were still up and roaming about their business. After about ten minutes of aimless walking he thought he would check in with Shining Armor. Seeing as he is one of two subsidiary officers to him, Jason, and Rainbow Dash.
Though it was dark outside Shining Armor’s tent was bright with light. Star Grazer took a deep breath. He always felt uneasy talking to people of authority. It made him feel small. He readied himself and made some deliberate noise on the tent flap before entering. Shining Armor was sleeping. He sat at a desk with his head down breathing evenly. Star Grazer was unsure of what to do. He decided he would just turn out the light and be on his way. He quietly walked up and reached the desk. He reached for the small lamp. As soon as he touched the lamp Shining’s eyes went wide. The big stallion jumped back and tackled Star to the ground effortlessly pinning him to the ground. At the realization of who it was he let him go.
“What are you doing here officer? Why are you sneaking around?” An annoyed tone lay under his sleepiness.
“Ah-uh-I-I was ju-just tu-turning off your lamp since you we-were sleeping… Sir!” Star Grazer couldn’t help but stammer.
“Jeez. You caught me off guard. Also I wasn’t sleeping… I was resting my eyes.” His darted shifted back and forth before continuing. “Anyway I'm almost positive that wasn’t the reason you came here. Why are you here?”
“Well sir, I wish to inquire on the success of the mission at Windforge and what our next assignment will be.” Star Grazer calmed and straightened himself to a rigid form and saluted.
“At ease, the city is currently devoid of threats and Jason and I will be discussing a plan for the city. Your next assignment will come just be patient. Feel free to clean up around the camp like before, it really was getting dirty!” He chuckled lightly and Star nervously smiled.
“Uh yeah sure.”
“In all seriousness there isn’t much to be done at the moment. Be on guard in case of any attack and keep doing whatever you are doing. You have proven to be worth your merit, now all you have to do is keep it.” He winked at him and walked back to the desk and yawned. “Whenever you want to leave you can go ahead. I’m going to get back to work.” Resting his eyes is more like it! Star Grazer left the tent and was pretty sure he heard the whack of Shining’s head hit the desk.
Star Grazer stayed up and walked around camp until the sun rose. The fall air reminded him of his country home. He missed that place so much. He dreamed of one day starting a family there with Cherry… He remembered buying it years when Cherry and him were good friends and prospective roommates. She was practically in love with the house. The area was much to Star Grazer’s liking and they both could easily get jobs in the nearby town. It was going to be a surprise for her birthday before she went and got an apartment in Canterlot and insisted on him moving in with her. The owner of the house wouldn’t buy it back from him so he lost out on about 40,000 bits. Now it just sat in the small valley gathering dust…
Star Grazer turned the corner and saw Jason and Rainbow Dash walk into a bulky protected tent. That is where they are keeping the griffon prisoner. Hope he gives out some good information. The sooner he gets out of here the sooner he can sort out his life. Star Grazer meandered toward the tent flap and peeked his head in. The guards pony looked at him for a moment, looking toward the distracted Jason and Rainbow Dash, and shooed him away. He smiled and walked away from the tent.
With nothing to do and a whole day to do it, Star Grazer walked back toward his tent. He searched around for Light Dasher, seeing no sign of the bubbly Pegasus. He stopped at the small fire pit and sat himself down. It was there that boredom ensued. He picked up a stick and began trying to break the large clumps of ash apart. He began to get annoyed as this one chunk of ash wouldn’t break apart. It was really strange looking. It was like somepony made an ash ball around a small object or something. He used the stick to pull it closer to him and tried to dust it with his hoof. Some ash fell away and revealed a dull metallic sheen. Intrigued, he continued to wipe away the debris from the object. Star Grazer was dumbfounded at what he was looking at. It looked like it was made of metal. It was just a small circle with a hole in the middle. Some jewels tried to sparkle through the dull ash. Some lettering on it read ‘Green Bay Pa-‘. The rest of the lettering was singed away. He worked away at the ring polishing it up and making it shine for a solid hour before Light Dasher and Fluttery flew down and landed next to him.
“Whatcha' got there?” Fluttery smiled
“I’m not sure. It looks like a ring but it is waaaaaaaaaaay to small.” He handed the ring to Fluttery. Light Dasher cocked her head to look at it.
“Green Bay Pa-…” Fluttery carefully announced the words.
“It doesn’t look like anything made by ponies. I found it in the fire pit.”
“Well I think it’s pretty!” Light Dasher giggled when she said this.
“Do you want it? I don’t exactly know what it is but you can have it if you want.” Light Dasher’s face went wide.
“Really? Thank you!” She pulled Star Grazer up into a hug. After she let him go Fluttery handed her the ring and they flew away. Star Grazer was confused at their sudden departure.
“Did I miss something? Was it something I said?” He pondered this for a moment before looking up at the sky. The sun was descending toward the horizon.
Star Grazer aimlessly walked around more before being approached by Barry. The stallion was sweaty and seemed to be in a rush. As he got closer he could hear his exhaustion as he gasped for air. Once he stopped in front of Star he held up a hoof and began to catch his breath.
“Hey… Star… We gotta' pack our things…”
“Uh… ok. Why are you so outta breath? You’re a pretty fit guy, that little distance shouldn’t have winded you.”
“I’ve been working all day! Unlike SOMEpony!” He gave Star a menacing glare. “Anyway, Shining Armor is placing a detail in Windforge and you are going to be heading up toward some other new place.”
“I'm assuming you are on the detail.” Star Grazer said solemnly.
“Eyup. They need the tent to pack up so be ready to leave by at least tomorrow.”
“Alright can do.” Star Grazer turned around and began to walk.
“Hey!”
“Yeah?”
“It’s been nice. You’re a great officer and leader!”
“Thanks!” He yelled while continuing his walk.
“Don’t let Light Dasher whip you too much!”
“What!?” Star didn’t receive an answer. Barry was laughing and trotting away in the direction he came. Light Dasher must be up to something. He made a mental note to remember to investigate all these weird references to Light Dasher.
Reality and Fatalities
“You gotta’ be flipping kidding me!”
Star Grazer struggled with the duffle bag as he tried fitting his items into it.
“How did Aunt Constella even fit all this? I can barely fit my books in here!” He struggled to stuff his favorite book The Golden Armor with all his vests. Everypony complained that he wears the same vest every day when he really doesn’t! They all have different stitching and patterns! He groaned as the book popped back out of the bag as soon as he let go. Light Dasher poked her head in and waved at him.
“Hey Star! How’s it going?” She seemed to be in a generally relaxed mood.
“You do know this is a stallions tent?”
“It’s not like any of us really wear clothes… except you and Blueblood.”
“True that!” He smirked and she giggled. She walked inside the tent and Star saw the ring on a piece of string around her neck. “Hey you still have that ring!” Her face lit up.
“Yeah! Of course I do! I love it! Oh! I cleaned it off some more and I think it said Green Bay Packers… I never heard of that though. It also said Super bowl? I don’t know but it looks awesome!”
“Heh, glad you like it. I have to continue packing. We’re leaving later you know that right?”
“Yeah my stuff is already packed. It’s not that much anyway so…” She drifted off into thought.
“Mmhmm well I'm going to-“ He put pressure on the book again into the duffle bag. “-going to- finish… packing! Hnnnnnnnnggggg” Light Dasher couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculous noises he was making.
“What’s so funny? You try fitting this book in here then!” He crossed his fore hoofs together and she quickly slid the book into the bag as well as his pillow and blanket. “Whatever… I loosened it for ya…” They both laughed at this and stood in compensable silence for a moment.
“Hey that is Cheery Grove right?” Light Dasher pointed to a picture frame on the bed. Star Grazers expression darkened and nodded. “Oh yeah… I'm sorry…”
“No, no. It’s fine. I’m learning to move on now. I want to leave this here. As a sort of mark. I completed my quest and this picture will be my proof…” He looked away from Light Dasher seemingly deep in thought. Light Dasher knew this was important to him but it seemed melodramatic.
“Well anyway! We depart in about an hour. You hungry?” Star Grazer snapped from his stupor.
“Yeah I could go for some food. What are they serving?” Light Dasher smiled.
“I don’t know. I had something else in mind!”
Star Grazer was unsure of why Light Dasher insisted that he wear a blindfold but he did. She was guiding him with a hoof but he still managed to stub his hooves against everything around him. After stubbing his front hoof against something particularly sharp he felt he might be bleeding and tried to take the blindfold off. Light Dasher gently brushed away his hand.
“Come on! It’s a surprise!” Star Grazer was sure glad he had a blindfold on otherwise Light Dasher would have seen him blush… Wait… She can still see him blush!
“Heh-Yeah! Ok.” He hoped that the smile on his face wasn’t too awkward.
Light Dasher sat him down on some kind of bench or something. It felt smooth and cold like an ice sculpture that was beginning to melt. A shiver went up his spine as Light Dasher put a hoof through his mane and placed something in it. He heard snapping noise and then quiet clapping.
“You can take off the blindfold now!”
Star Grazer was not prepared for what he saw before him. It was an assortment of savory treats. Apple Turnover with an Applesauce reduction! Peach Cobbler! Small jelly filled Danishes and a pitcher of some sort of clear liquid. His mouth began to water.
“I figured since you liked my cooking that I would make something really quick before we go!” She tilted her head and smiled. He returned the smile under burning cheeks.
“You didn’t have to do all this!”
“Nonsense, you have been really down so this will bring you back up!”
“Awh thanks!” He scanned over all the food and gasped. “Is that… Honey Pickled Pears?”
“Mmhmm! Turns out there are a lot of bees around here! I wasn’t originally looking for honey but I guess the bees were busy this year!” He was unsure what she meant by that but disregarded it.
“Wow. This is really great thanks.” He stared at the food longingly.
“Well are you gonna’ just stare at it or are you gonna’ eat it?”
“Not unless you join me.”
About an hour later…
“I think I overate…” Light Dasher burped loudly and groaned.
“Typically I’d comment on your table manners but that food was too delicious! Thank you again.”
“Yeah…ugh… No problem.” She weakly smiled and slowly stood up. “Guess we better get going. I think we might be late moving our stuff…”
“Me thinks you are right.” He hopped up and shook his head and began trotting off in the direction of camp.
“How in the name of sweet Celestia are you able to just trot without throwing up? You ate more than I did!”
“Oh… Oops! Remember how I can cast low level magic?”
“Yes…” Light Dasher squinted her eyes at him expecting his answer.
“I cast a spell on myself to speed up time in my stomach… as weird as that sounds!” He smiled nervously as Light Dasher’s gaze burned through him. She slowly got up before a feeling of weightlessness fell over her. She felt full but she didn’t feel fatigued. She actually felt invigorated. She looked at Star Grazer who was waving his arms in small circles.
“Thanks.”
“No problem.” He breathed in heavily when Light Dasher turned around.
Light Dasher was right about being late to leave. All of Star Grazer’s items were gone! He assumed somepony took them to the new camp. He will have to find this pony and thank him! The picture of Cheery “Cherry” Grove was still on the now stripped bed frame. He took the picture outside and left it leaning against the side of a tree. He lowered his head and mumbled a few words. Light Dasher came up and patted him on the back. They nodded to each other and they trotted down the path toward their next encampment.
Blueblood had already left. He struggled to carry Star Grazers duffle bag. He was scared that they would lose it in the single buggy. Blueblood looked down at his hoof which now looked more like dirt covered nubs then hooves. He began to slowly examine himself as he walked ahead of the group. His muscles were a lot more toned and defined since he joined up. He was riddled with small cuts and bruises. His mane was a tangled mess and got in his way a lot, especially at the battle at Windforge. He put down his bags and pulled out one of the knives he had grabbed from the armory and began to cut his mane. Dirty golden locks fell and soon he was an entirely different pony. He stared at his reflection in the hoof held blades. His face was ridden with scars. Hopefully this won’t ruin his chances of winning The M.E.S.A. The Most Eligible Stallion Award. Blueblood precariously placed the knife on his back and shifted the bags he carried around.
All was generally quite. save for the creaking of the single buggy and the hoof steps of ten or so soldiers. Blueblood ended falling toward the back of the line he busied himself with the strap on Star Grazers bag. He better be damn appreciative of this… Is that how Jason said it? Hmm… He made a mental note to ask him about that. Blueblood picked up his pace as he fell behind and tried to occupy himself. He began counting all the flowers he saw on the road. After only seeing one after an hour of travel he quit.
He stopped suddenly. Something wasn’t right. The other ponies felt it as well… Something was watching them. The stallions at the front signaled to fan out and search. He did as instructed. He put down his bags and to make room for his spear. After ensuring that a mare behind covered him he began to prod through the bushes lining the forest. A few minutes rolled by with no luck. He returned to the buggy and picked up his stuff before hearing a crash and grunting. Blueblood immediately whipped around the buggy to see three griffons holding their claws over the pony’s mouths. Two more griffons were advancing on the mare before a spear flew straight into one griffon’s torso. He hollered in pain trying to remove the spear. They all quickly looked up to see Blueblood picking up another spear and preparing a charge. One of the griffons twisted the poor pony’s neck and kicked the limp body away, charging straight toward him. Blueblood sidestepped the slash of a claw and bucked the griffon. He staggered giving Blueblood enough time to run and up and jam the spear into the griffon’s neck. Two more griffons appeared in his peripheral vision and he turned around to scarcely dodge a spear thrust. He felt a strange sensation as he fell to the ground. He received several kicks to the back, scrambling to pull a spear toward him. He grabbed it began yelling, swinging it madly in the air. He felt it connect and he got up. The griffon’s face was bleeding and several ponies were beginning to get up and fight back. The griffon shook his head and swiped downward. Blueblood dodged and countered with a fore hoof in the face. The griffon staggered holding both claws up to its assumingly broken beak. Blueblood jumped and bucked the griffon in the face again causing him to fall back. He began bucking the griffon senselessly. He lost all control as he bucked the squirming griffon in the face. Warmth splashed onto his hoofs as he continued bucking the griffon. The griffon continued to squirm and wriggle between blows. A warm liquid was beginning to pool on the ground underneath him while he still bucked the now lifeless and limp griffon. He still continued bucking until a hoof on his back broke him of his trance.
He looked at what he had done. The body was unrecognizable. Gore decorated the grass and fauna around them. The remaining griffons were dead and no pony casualties were suffered. The other ponies however were greatly disturbed by what they saw. Blueblood looked to see their horrified and disgusted faces. He looked back down to the griffon then at his hooves. They were drenched in blood and some strange purple and green debris which he dearly hoped wasn’t what he thought it was. The group dug out a grave. They buried the bloodied remains, moving the griffon bodies as well, and moved on in silence. They reached a large hill a few hours later which was to be there designated campsite. They unpacked and washed up. The water felt terrible against the caked blood on Blueblood’s hooves.
Plot
“…You know what I said? Wh-wha-what I said, what I said was- was- what I said was, I said, Listen for a moment I said- What I said wa-“
“DANG IT JUST SAY WHAT YOU SAID!” Star Grazer was ready to strangle this pony. He had an hourglass cutie mark and was brown with a strange darker brown mane. He carried some kind of pen thing in a saddlebag of his. He was so annoying and stammered so much!
“Well I was about to before being rudely interrupted… Anyway, what I said was- What I said was, ‘No, I don’t like carrots.’” Star Grazer almost lunged at the pony before Light Dasher tapped him on the shoulder.
“Hey Star tell me something. What does your cutie mark mean?”
“Oh this thing?” He looked back at the cutie mark of a scroll in a black crescent moon. “Well that is a long story really.”
“Well I’d rather hear a long story about my friend than this guy.” She pointed toward the brown mane colt who snorted.
“Well it all started when I was teenager. I was extremely late in finding my Cutie Mark and was bullied a lot for it. The bullying was pretty bad and what in the name of sweet Celestia is that!?” He pointed toward the pile of griffons and a small mound in the ground.
“I guess the ponies ahead of us ran into trouble…” They looked in disgust as a stallion grabbed a shovel and began burying the rest of the bodies. Star Grazer grabbed a shovel and helped in burying the bodies.
They all continued their journey in silence. Star Grazer looked at all the other ponies’ tired faces. They weren’t sullen but they were most definitely tired. He looked at Light Dasher who didn’t seem affected at all. Her face was a little dirty but besides that she didn’t look tired, sad, or anything. She probably is trying to hide it… or she is one tough mare!
“War… War never changes…” The brown coated stallion said.
“Hmm?”
“Oh, nothing my good man! Just a quote I heard in my travels.” Star Grazers raised an eyebrow.
“You travel a lot?”
“You could say that yes.” They both stopped and stood in silence for a moment.
“Well?”
“Well what?”
“Are you going to tell me where you have traveled?”
“I’ll have to decline. That is a tale for another time. Look at that we are here!” Star Grazer deadpanned. That talkative pony brings up a topic he actually wants to listens to and he goes mute?! The nerve!
“Hey snap out of it we gotta find our stuff.” Light Dasher clapped her hooves in front of him.
“Your stuff was missing too?” Star Grazer was genuinely concerned.
“Well yeah but no big deal though. Not like I had anything important.” She turned her head and grimaced. She had left the ring in her bag.
“Well let’s ask Blueblood. I he should be around here somewhere.” He glanced around as the ponies unpacked items and pitched tents. He saw a two of his members from his portion of Team Green Bean walking around. One was a dark blue pony and the other a grayish color. He approached them. They saluted as he got closer.
“At ease guys.” He chuckled as they smiled. “Have you seen Blueblood?”
“No sir. We haven’t seen that pony since the mission at Windforge… Sir!” The gray pony shifted and had of look of yearning.
“Something the matter solider?”
“Sir? Not to be rude but why is Blueblood in the team?”
“Well that is a simple. He is a great fighter and earned his keep and though he has some… quirks… he has a sense for detail! At least this is what I think is the reason.” The answer seemed to satisfy the two ponies and they saluted before walking away. Star Grazer wasn’t exactly reassured by that however.
Star and Light Dasher walked around the camp. The small cluster of tents that were set up was beginning to flourish into a small town. The more he looked upon the scene the more he kind of liked it. The tents were a kind of reassurance. Like a family at a home. Somepony you can always go back to! At this thought he smiled. He was interrupted from his stupor by a gray pony with a clipboard.
“Hello, Officer Star Grazer?” The gray pony picked up a pencil from his clipboard.
“Yeah but no need for the formalities Star Grazer is fine.” The pony smiled.
“Yup, just checking on who is present. Light Dasher?”
“Eyup! But you have to call me Officer!” She scowled at the pony, shrinking back a little.
“Uh... Yes! Officer Light Dasher, mam.” The gray pony took a step back. Light Dasher giggled at pat the pony on the back.
“Geez! I’m just messing with you!” They all laughed.
“Alright, glad to have you here!” He awkwardly smiled with the pencil in his mouth and walked away writing.
“I like that pony! He is a cool dude.” Star Grazer nodded in agreement.
Light Dasher looked behind her and nudged Star Grazer. “Hey look.”
“Huh?” She pointed at Prince Blueblood placing down a stake. He noticed them and motioned for them to come to him. They approached a stern looking Blueblood.
“Hey. Your stuff is actually in front of this tent. Let me finish putting the stakes and it’s all yours.” Blueblood picked up a single stake and walked over to the string lining the tents edge. Star Grazer and Light Dasher watched him place down and slam the last stake into the ground and walk away.
“Hey where you goin’?” Light Dasher called out to Blueblood.
“Huh? I don’t know. Why?” Blueblood lazed his eyes toward them.
“Well I mean you appear, do something out of character, and then disappear.” Blueblood seemed taken aback by this.
“Are you saying me being friendly is ‘out of character’?!”
Star Grazer cleared his throat. “Well you aren’t typically the most selfless pony around…”
“Hmph! I’ll have you know I am more than just another pompous fool! Admittedly I was egocentric and arrogant in the past but that is just that, The Past!” Blueblood took on a more annoyed tone. “And I am not exactly welcome by these ponies. They see me for my past and nothing more. I don’t exactly have ‘friends’ here.”
“Well of course you have friends! Blueblood! Did you think you were all alone in this little army?” Light Dasher put a hoof around him.
“When you say it like that it seems childish but… yes”
“Awh come on! We’re your friends! Why wouldn’t we be? Especially me!” Blueblood looked down at his hooves. Perhaps he does have friends. Maybe he was just too absorbed to notice. Light Dasher’s stomach grumbled.
“Hehe. Guess I'm hungry. Let’s grab some grub!” Star Grazer and Light Dasher let go of him, starting to walk. “Hey you coming? We kinda’ need you to come anyway… We don’t know where the mess hall is!” Blueblood chuckled and quickly caught up to the duo.
Blueblood didn’t realize how fast time had gone by. By the time they had gotten to the mess hall the cook was just closing. He quickly made the trio a few platefuls of fries with what was left of the hot grease. They made a small fire pit in front of the ten Blueblood pitched. Strangely enough he never felt so full from so little.
“How did so little fill me up?” Star Grazer grinned.
“I used magic. I made the fries larger.” Blueblood squinted.
“Ok two questions: 1. How did YOU manage to use magic? 2. How were the fries bigger? They looked the same size to me!”
“Well it turns out anypony can use magic really. It is just a lot harder because I don’t have a horn to channel that energy. It works something like this. Your horn is directly connected to your brain. It is something like a hose.” Blueblood and Light Dasher stared at him quizzically as the flames flickered in the night. “A hose is used to focus water into a specific area at greater distances. Your horn works the same. It focuses the magic in you and releases it in a solid concentration across a greater distance.”
“So that’s how magic works! I never knew that. The more you know!” Light Dasher grinned and played with her feathers.
“That still doesn’t explain how you can use magic Star.”
“Oh well instead of a horn I use my hooves. The surge of magic has to flow through a much longer distance so it isn’t as strong. It also takes more energy for me to do basic things.”
“But Star, a spell for enlarging a solid item is something typically only unicorns with advanced training can pull off.”
“let’s just say I did a lot of studying.”
“You remind a lot of another pony Star. She was very studious and worked closely with Princess Celestia. My, she was gorgeous. I tried to court her a few times but she was more interested in books than relationships.” He laughed to himself.
“Well who knows? You might meet her again!” Light Dasher elbowed him.
“Well I don’t think that will happen. She is the Element of Magic. She saved Equestria twice and I left a poor impression on her friend Rarity.”
“Twilight Sparkle? Huh… Well you can always find a new mare!” Her smile for whatever reason made Bluebloods cheeks warm. It was probably just the fire.
“Ever the optimist are we?”
“You gotta’ be! Otherwise we’d be sad all the time! Besides you’re a great looking Stallion. Which reminds me, you changed your hair! It’s shorter!” Blueblood reached a hoof to his hair.
“Oh yes! I cut it. It was beginning to get in the way.”
“I like it!” Light Dasher yawned and stretched her wings and hooves. “I’m tired. Is there anything to sleep on In there?” She pointed to the tent.
“Yes there are two readymade beds and an extra set just in case.” Light Dasher sat up and stretched.
“Well when you two are done chatting have Star set up the third bed. Goodnight!” She yawned again and walked into the tent.
Star Grazer ad Blueblood both watched the tent for a moment longer before looking into the slowly dying fire. A few minutes passed before Star Grazer sighed and stood up. He walked over to a small nearby woodpile and threw some logs into the fire. The flame blazed as it accepted more fuel.
“So…” Star Grazer clapped his hooves together.
“So…” Blueblood kicked a rock.
“You like Light Dasher?” Blueblood’s head snapped toward Star Grazer. He checked for any hint of play. Finding none he cleared his throat.
“Well I’ll admit she is pretty. However I don’t really intend on pursuing romance in the military.” He paused for a moment and chuckled at the thought.
“Huh ok…” They both stared into the fire again…
“Do you like her?” Blueblood still stared at the fire.
“Well… Yeah. She has been really good to me and well…” He stared off into the flickering orange flame. Blueblood looked at him and smiled.
“Don’t worry. I have no interest in the mare however enticing she may be.” Star Grazer looked at his smiling face warily.
“Thank you… I think.” Blueblood stifled a yawn.
“I’m feeling tired as well. It is alright for me to sleep in the tent with you?”
“Yes of course! I’ll just be sitting out here for a little more.” Blueblood nodded and went into the tent.
Star Grazer turned his gaze to the fire. It flickered in the black sky with its orange and yellow glow. Its warmth permeated the cold night air and made him feel cozy and comfortable. He inched closer and that cozy heat became irritating. It bothered him and he felt slight sweat on his brow. He inched even closer and the flame felt slightly painful. He stepped away from the fire into the cold. The bitter air sent chills through his body. Star Grazer kicked dirt onto the fire. The red and yellow puffed out and in its wake glowing red embers. The embers groaned and crackled and he kicked more dirt onto them until they completely went out. Leaving Star Grazer surrounded by the dark and the cold. He nodded and went into the tent to let sleep take him.
