Chapter 3: Lightning Dust

Previous Chapter
Lightning Dust

A green pegasus pony with orange mane and tail walked into her dorm room at the  Wonderbolts Academy.

"It's not fair. Now I'll never become a Wonderbolt." Lightning Dust thought to herself as she packed her saddlebag.

When she had finished, she walked out of the front door. Dust turned to give it one last look before she went home.

She could she other pegasi doing drills. Ligthing turned to go.

"Hey you!" a voice called.

Lightning Dust turned to see a pink earth pony.

"You nearly killed us with that twister!" Pinkie yelled.

"How was suppose to know somepony was coming in a hot air balloon!" Dust snapped.

"Pinkie, leave her alone!" another voice ordered.

Both turned to see a purple unicorn.

"But..." Pinkie started.

"No buts, it not worth your time scolding somepony as reckless as her!" Twilight Sparkle told her pink companion.

"Your lucky, punk. You were going to be told off like nopony's business!" Pinkie told Lightning before she followed Twilight to the balloon.

Lightning watched as Rainbow Dash's friends boarded the balloon. RD herself was there to see them off. When the balloon left, she faced Lightning Dust for a minute. The two pegasi, once friends, now enemies glared at each other.

"You cost me my dream!" Dust shouted.

"You nearly cost me MY FRIENDS! Friends mean more than a dream!" Dash shouted back.

"Rainbow Dash!" a well known voice shouted.

"Coming ma'am!" Dash called back.

One last glare and Dash returned to the training course. She past Spitfire on the way. Spitfire made her way to Lightning Dust.

"I hope you learned not to be such a showboat, putting other at risk is something no Wondorbolt ever does." She told Dust sternly.

"Yes ma'am." Dust replied.

"You'd have been a kicked out the Wonderbolts for the way you act, so count yourself lucky it happened now." Spitfire said as she flew away.

Lightning turned and left. As she flew through the sky,she couldn't help but think how she could have been a Wonderbolt, but now all her talent goes to waste, and all over that someponies COULD have gotten hurt, but DIDN'T. Angry built up as she thought  of Rainbow Dash scolding her. It had to be Dash who told Spitfire. It was she who cost Dust her life long dream.

"And it going to be her who pays the price!" Lightning Dust said to herself. It was a threat and a promise.

Lightning Dust first had to go home to plan her attack. Her plan was simple, do to Rainbow what Rainbow did to her, make her look bad. Once Spitfire saw that Dash was not better her, she had to give Dash the boot too. To do that, she would merely hang around while Dash did drill, then she would frame Dash for doing terrible things as time went on. Dust went back the next day. She was met by Spitfire at the front door.

"Lightning Dust?, what are you doing here?" she asked.

"I'm here to apologize to Rainbow Dash." Dust said.

"Well, she's not here anymore." Spitfire said as she handed Lightning the note Rainbow had written.

Dear Spitfire

I had a dream last night that told me i can't be a Wonderbolt, as such, I regret to inform you that I have to leave the academy, and this time I know there's nothing you can say to change my mind. I know I said I'd never quit, but it would be a crime to quit on my friends and my duty as the element of Loyalty, I'm sure you understand. By the way, thank you for, well you know what.

                                                                                                                                                                     Rainbow Dash

"Where does Rainbow Dash live?" Lightning Dust asked.

"Ponyville." Spitfire answered.

All she saw after that was green streak with a two tone yellow lightning bolt in it.

As she raced through the sky, Dust thought about how she was going make Rainbow pay now that they were in a town. Making her look like a horrible pony was out of the question because they were in Dash's turf. Maybe if she challenged Dash to race and won, that would at least dent Rainbow's ego, and she can walk away with the satisfaction that she taught Dash not to mess with her again. Dust settled on this and arrived at Ponyville. When she did, she asked a brown earth pony where Rainbow Dash was.

"Sugarcube Corner, just down the street." Time Turner told her.

Dust left him without another word. She forcefully kicked the door open. Six ponies stared at her.

"What are you doing here?" Rainbow Dash asked her.

"All my life, I wanted to be a Wonderbolt, thanks to you, that's never going to happen. So now I challenge you to cross town race, winner stays, loser leave Ponyville FOREVER!" Lightning said.

"What makes you think I'd accept a challenge like that?" Dash asked.

Dust flew around the bakery knocking over things as she did.

"Hey, quit ruining Dashie's welcome home party!" Pinkie shouted.

"If Rainbow Dash doesn't accept my challenge, I'll just keep wrecking the place." Lightning Dust said.

"Alright Dust, your fight is with me, don't drag my friends into it." the rainbow maned pegasus said sternly.

They went to the Sweet Apple Acres.

"The racers will start here, fly to Fluttershy's cottage and back. First back wins." Twilight said.

Dash and Dust lined up. Fluttershy stood in front of them.

"Ready, set, go." Fluttershy yelled quietly.

Dash took off full speed ahead. Dust on the other hoof, was confused and enraged.

"You call that a start!?" she asked the yellow  pegasus angrily.

"Hey, if Ah were you, Ah'd get to the race!" Applejack yelled.

For once, Lightning couldn't argue. She took off after RD. Thirty seconds later, she was neck and neck with Dash. Ponies watched as a rainbow streak and a green streak with a lightning bolt in it shot across the sky. The two pegasi flew side by side, one gaining the lead, then the other. They reached the cottage and turned around in perfect sync, then returned to the see-sawing lead. Dust decided to cheat the victory as they approached the farm, she "traded fur" with Dash, knocking her out of the sky.

"Victory is mine!" Dust thought to herself, that is before she heard a loud boom, followed by a rainbow speeding past her so fast it sent Dust into spin and crash into the ground. She picked herself up and sped to Sweet Apple Acres, only to discover that Dash had gotten there first.

"How did you do that?" Dust demanded.

"Sonic Rainboom." Rainbow Dash said simply.

"That's not fair." Dust said angrily.

"Well you traded fur, so yeah it is, NOW GOT OUT!" Dash yelled.

"This isn't over Rainbow Dash, I'll get you for this." Lightning Dust  threatened and promised, then proceeded to take off and  head home.

Rainbow Dash watched as the green pegasus flew away. She felt a hoof on her shoulder.

"Don't worry about her Dashie, we'll be behind you if she returns, but I doubt she will." Fluttershy said.

Dash looked at her lover, and the rest of her friends.

"Thanks guys." Dash said gratefully.

Next time, Dust wouldn't know what hit her.
