Singularity: Demons in Paradise
Chapter 23: Renko Meets the Doctor
Previous Chapter Next ChapterThe entire group seemed evenly matched against the Zeks, Renko's stamina ebbed slowly away as he used his powers to slow down the monsters, each of the monsters themselves seemed to be picking up strength to use in their attacks. Renko's hopes of getting out of the battle without too much damage began to run short as he heard the clicking sound of an empty last magazine in his rifle. He quickly switched to using his Centurion and did what he could to keep the monsters off of his squad.
The strangest form of assistance came as the creatures' figures began to fade and distort, they writhed as if in agony as the process continued, after several seconds there was nothing left to remind anyone of the presence of any of these monsters save for the few bodies that littered the clearing. The air itself was tense as the group waited to see if this was supposed to be some sort of ploy to get them to let down their guard, after it became apparent that the Zeks weren't coming back the group heaved a collective sigh of relief. Renko took a knee as he tried to catch his breath, the fight had taken more stamina from him that he would rather admit, but he couldn't wait for too long... He wanted to end whatever was causing this problem before it could get any worse.
The group's attention was captured by a strange whirring sound, all eyes turned to something that looked like a blue phonebooth materializing in the center of the clearing. Every soldier's weapons were trained on the booth as it solidified, Renko could tell that there were occupants because he could barely hear voices, tension was back in Renko's squad as the occupants opened the door too locked in conversation to immediately notice the weapons pointed at them.
"...You see Derpy, I told you I'd get us back to Ponyville safely... We probably just ended up on the other side of tow-" The chestnut-colored earth stallion that was initially speaking was cut off mid sentence when he registered the weapons pointed at him.
"Is everything ok Doctor? You kinda just stopped talking..." The second voice was undeniably female and Rainbow Dash couldn't shae the feeling that she had heard it somewhere before, her suspicions were confirmed when a grey pegasus mare stepped out of the box only to be met with the same view the stallion had.
"Well... This is certainly not what I was epecting Ponyville to look like...wait... You're a human?!" The stallion had begun with a look of confusion between the guards until his gaze ended it's travels on Renko.
"Yeah, I am, so what?" Renko asked with obvious irritation.
"I thought that there were no humans in this universe... How are you even existing here?" The Doctor asked with growing enthusiasm.
"All I know is that there is something causing a disturbance in time and it's affecting this time by placing creatures that should never have existed in this time here... and apparently me being a human is the best way for me to handle it." The Doctor's eyes widened as a look of realization dawned on him.
"DERPY! This is the space-time anomaly the computer was picking up! We have to help them!" He was almost bouncing up and down in a way that reminded him of Pinkie Pie.
"Fine... Just make sure you can handle yourselves if things start to get rough." Renko replied as he lowered his weapon and began to make the trudge along toward the castle ruins. The chestnut stallion and the grey mare followed the group... a little confused as to why the soldiers were now carrying guns. A thought egged the Doctor's thoughts as he walked along, he finally walked a little closer to Twilight and asked the question that was bothering him.
"Is this supposed to be some sort of major historical event? I only ask because I noticed that the Elements of Harmony are in this group." Twilight was going to answer but Renko answered without turning his gaze away from the path in front of them.
"If this mission succeeds... This event will have never happened in history..."
Out of all the things that made The Doctor and his assistant nervous, it was events that were never supposed to happen being forced to happen so that they could be erased from history.
The rest of the journey to the castle ruins went along quietly, too quietly for Renko to find to his liking, even the rest of his squad was nervously looking around for any signs of danger. None of the elements looked like the quiet was bothering them too much, Renko knew that they would soon have a reason to fear those ruins... he just didn't know what there was to fear.
