Chapter 1: Three friends at school

Three friends at school

"Brendan! Get up! It's time for school." my dad shouted. I slowly opened my eyes, unwilling to rouse myself right away. I rubbed my eyes, but regretted it almost instantly. I tend to sleep with my contacts in at night and this was about the fifth day in a row I had done this.

I looked at my phone to see if I had gotten any emails over the night. "Another night and still nothing from my editor." I said to myself. I closed out of my emails and opened up the My Little Pony game on my iPhone and checked my social tab. I had 12 gifts from others and a chest. I closed out of the app and decided it was time for me to get my lazy butt up.

I looked over to my dresser where I kept my pony collection. From left to right, I had two Twilight plushies, a Pinkie Pie plushie, and two Rainbow Dash plushies. The mane six collection card stand ups were lined up, leading all the way to my favorite pony, Rainbow Dash. The four vinyl figures I had lined my dresser to my table. Behind them were fan arts and other posters I had collected over the years.

I put on my "Luna is best princess" t-shirt and my jeans with my pony belt. Yeah, I know, I'm a tiny bit obsessed. I suddenly hear Solrac screaming Cock-a-doodle-doo and reach for my phone. "Hello?" I answer.

"Hey, Brendan! You know what today is?" my girlfriend Genevieve asks in a cheery yet sleepy voice.

"The day where I actually get more than four hours of sleep?" I reply jokingly.

"Only if you stop watching YouTube videos at three A.M. Come on, I know you remember, sweetie." she said.

"Yes, Genny, I do." Genny is my nickname for her since I have a little bit of a hard time saying Genevieve. "Our reservations are at 4:30 at Red Lobster and then our Senior Prom." I said.

"And what are you wearing?"

"A t-shirt, jeans with holes, and a baseball cap." I joked. "Don't worry. I won't look homeless."

"Whatever." she said with a light laugh. "I'll see you at school, okay?"

"Alright. Love you."

"Love you too." I replied and hung up the phone. I placed it back in my pocket and walked downstairs. The sun was just barely peaking over the horizon. I grabbed my coat and keys and headed out the door. I never ate breakfast in the mornings before school. My lunch starts at 10:30 which is when I usually wake up on weekends. I started my car and plugged my phone into the radio jack. Of course the first song that pops on is a screaming heavy metal song while my volume is up to 25. Yes I did just blow my ears out.

I turned it down and headed for my school. The rain was making the roads all slick and slippery. I hoped that it would clear up before tonight. I drove and pulled into my school parking lot. I plugged my headphones into my phone and began the short walk to the front. Technically, I'm not allowed to listen to music in school, but I stopped caring the beginning of my Senior year. I take them out as I pass the administrators, but once I'm in through the front doors, I put them right back in. People say hi to me in the halls and I just wave. I don't like to talk to other people that much. It's not that I don't like other people, it's just that I prefer to keep myself throughout the day.

I head to the cafeteria and go to the Panther Den, our school's snack bar. The lady who works behind there already knows what I want. "You want Diet Coke and apple juice, yes?" she says in her asian accent.

"You know it." I said.

"You sleep well?"

"Same as usual." I said as I scanned my I.D.

"You should go to bed earlier. That way you not so tired in the mornings." she said as she handed me my drinks. "Now you have a good day, Brendan."

"You too." I walk over to my table, away from everyone else and wait for Genny to arrive. About 30 minutes pass and she finally shows up.

"Hey, babe. Sorry I'm late, but my ride didn't pick me up and my mom had to drop me off." she said. She kissed my forehead and took one of the headphones out.

"Umm..." I said.

She looked at me with an annoyed look as she saw that my coat was zipped up all the way to hide the shirt. I'm not ashamed of it, and I'm more than willing to walk around with a pony shirt on, but I know she hates it and is embarrassed by it. So when I do wear one, I make sure that she can't see it. "How can you like that show so much? I mean you're listening to songs from the show itself meant for little girls!"

"I've told you before and I'll tell you again. I like the show because of the animation, the characters, and the fact that it's a cartoon that actually is appealing. Unlike the new Spongebob and Half Naked Animals." I said.

"Whatever." she said. She despised the fact that I liked the show. I tried to get her to watch an episode with an open mind, but when she watched one with me, she kept making comments about how childish it was and how stupid it is. So I gave up and just learned to deal with what she said. I didn't let it get to me. At least not too terribly.

"The bell's going to ring soon. Shouldn't you be getting to class?" I asked as I looked at the clock. 7:50.

"Ah, crap. Will you walk me to my locker?" she asked.

"Can't. If I get one more tardy I'm getting Saturday detention hours." I said.

"Fine. I'll see you later!" she said and gave me a kiss. She ran down the hall to her locker and I turned to walk down to my class, World Myth.

You know, if I had known that this class was going to be so god awful I would have chosen a different class. I fell asleep and am woken by the bell. Of course, my next class is Algebra, the one class I hate more than World Myth. The hour passes by quickly though. "God I'm hungry." I say to myself. I head off to lunch and gorge myself.

The day goes by without a lot of happenings. The most exciting part of my day was my Psychology class, the last hour of the day. We had a psychologist come in and talk to us. I wanted to ask him why people feel like guys can't like a show that is well made and well written, even though it's original audience was meant for little girls. But I didn't. Half of the class are about four times my size. I sat in the back of the class quietly as I let the extroverts talk and blabber on. I enjoy the class, but I sometimes wish people would be quiet.

My phone vibrates in my pocket and I look at it. That's the great thing about sitting in the back of the class. I can hide my phone behind the person in front of me. Can you give me a ride? I hate taking the bus home. Genny texted me. I was giving my brony friend Issac a ride home too.

Sure, but I'm taking Issac home too. I'll drop you off first since his house is closer to mine than yours. I texted back.

Ok. Meet at front. she replied.

I looked at the clock. Ten minutes till class ends. Lovely. I thought to myself. I flipped through my phone's contacts until I found Issac's number. I texted him saying that I'd be taking Genny home too. He never texts back though in school, but I know he'll see it after the bell rings.

"Okay class, tomorrow there will be a quiz over what our guest has been talking about. I hope you all were paying attention." the teacher said.

Shit. I thought to myself. I hadn't even gotten the speaker's name. Looks like I was going to fail that little quiz. We had the rest of the time to talk to others if we wanted as long as we stayed in our seats. I pulled my phone back out and went through my emails. I looked through my skype messages and found a link to a "What type of pony are you" quiz. I clicked on it and answered the questions. It told me I was a Pegasus, just like my OC. Cool. I think I'll show this to Issac. I thought to myself. I sent him the link and went back through my emails and messages.

The bell rang and everyone sprinted for the door. I took my time leaving. I hate being close to other people who I don't know well. It makes me uncomfortable and insecure. I'm always one of the last to leave. I head to the front of the school and meet up with Genny. "Hey, honey." I say as I hug her from her behind.

"Hey!" she says back. "Where's Issac?" she asked.

"I'm here!" he called as he ran up to us. Issac is like me. Quiet around people he doesn't know very well, but talkative to those he does know. "And Brendan, I already took that quiz."

"And what you get?" I asked.

"Well..." he started and glanced at Genny.

"What? Just say it. It's not like she doesn't already know you like the show too." I said. Unlike me, he had trouble talking about the show around anyone who wasn't a brony too.

"Um...okay. Well, I'm a Unicorn." he said.

"Cool. You're the superior race among ponies. Of course, without me you wouldn't be able to have any stable weather." I told him.

Genny rolled her eyes at us. "Are you two done? I swear it's all you guys talk about. My Little Pony this, or My Little Pony that." she said mockingly. "It does get annoying very quickly."

"Only if you don't like the show." I replied.

"Yeah, well, stop talking about it around me." she said.

"How about this. I'll stop talking about it if you take the test and find out which type of pony you are." I said. I knew she wasn't going to take the quiz. And if she did, she knew full well that I'd only stop for a week before I'd talk to him about it.

"And why should I?" she asked.

"Because, for all we know, you could either be a high and mighty Unicorn, or a lowly Earth Pony. Or maybe you'd just be completely awesome and be a Pegasus like me." I told her. I have nothing against Earth Ponies, it's just that I think that Pegasus are the best, Unicorns are next, and then Earth Ponies are last.

"And if you're a Unicorn, technically you'd be able to turn Brendan into an orange and make him fly around." Issac said.

"Fine. I'll take the stupid quiz." she said. I handed her my phone as we began to walk to my car. "I can't believe I'm doing this."

"It's just a quiz. It's not like we're forcing you to watch the show." I said.

"Yeah, except you did that one day." she replied.

"Hey you agreed to it!" I pointed out. We got in my car and began to drive to her house.

"Pick a pet. A hand? What the hell?" she said.

"I didn't understand that one." Issac said.

"Just answer it. It's meaningless." I said.

"Fine. A hand." she said.

I rolled my eyes. "You have to take it seriously." I said.

"I can't with answers like that." she said. "Alright. So I finished the stupid quiz. It says I'm a Unicorn." The phone began to vibrate suddenly. At first it was just like I was getting a text, but then it started to vibrate more violently. Genny dropped the phone onto the floor as it started to vibrate even more.

"What's going on?" she asked.

"I don't know. It didn't do that to me when I did it." I said, confused. I pulled over to the side of the road so I could see what my phone was going all screwy for. I picked it up and saw that it's screen was shining a bright white light as it vibrated furiously.

"Did this happen to you?" I asked Issac.

"No. It just gave me my result and I left the site." he replied.

It stopped vibrating and the screen went black. "What the hell was that about?" I asked to no one in particular.

"Does your phone still work?" Genny asked.

"I sure hope so. My dad's going to kill me if it doesn't." I said. I placed my phone next to my leg and put the car in drive. As soon as I did that, the entire car lit up with a bright light that engulfed the entire vehicle.

"What the-" Genny shouted. Suddenly, I felt my skin burn as the light grew brighter. Even with my eyes closed, I could still see the light shining through my eyelids.

"Turn it off!" Issac shouted. I tried to open the door, but I couldn't find the handle.

"Brendan!" I heard Genny cry.

I reached for the phone. "I'm trying!" I winced as the phone burned my hand on contact. "Shit! It's too hot!" The phone vibrated even more and I began feel my entire body burn. I lost consciousness and felt all feeling leave my body.
