Chapter 1: New Arrival

New Arrival

I looked in the mirror, straightening what I could of my incredibly rowdy mane. On the first stroke of the comb, a snarl broke it cleanly in half. Sighing, I returned attention to my face, and gave words of encouragement to the one in the mirror.

“Today...Today I finally visit Ponyville.”

Finishing my morning routine, I grabbed my meager amount of luggage and set to leave. Exiting out into the streets of Canterlot, I began heading to the business section. Having been ready for this trip, I had the route to the travel port memorized. Arriving there, I found my scheduled chariot, ready to go. The travel guards I recognized as Castor and Pollux, two distinctly white ponies. Rumor had it that Castor was adopted, but I had known that they were direct twins, from the records I’ve had to organize years back, but rumors had a way of persisting. Stepping onto the carriage, the pair let out a whinny before extending their wings and taking off. The trip to Ponyville wouldn’t be too long, about an hour or two, but the sights would be fairly uneventful, and the gentle rocking easily put me to sleep. I draped a cloak for warmth across me, and promptly fell asleep.

As the chariot began to slow, the wind resistance bumped the carriage I slept in, and woke me. Stretching what little I could in the confined space, I gazed at the vista that was the small town of Ponyville. Beyond it, there lied the Everfree Forest, and mountains beyond that. We began our descent into the town’s exterior, and the ground came into clear view. Having landed, I exited the chariot and levitated my belongings out of it, when Castor (Or was it Pollux? It was often difficult to tell.) stopped me.

“Before you go, there are a few things you should know.”

Nodding at his statement, I stayed silent. Information was always welcome.

‘Now,’ he spoke in an authoritative tone, ‘When you get into town. you will want to speak to a mare by the name of Twilight Sparkle. She will be able to set up any lodgings for you, as well as giving a small tour of the town. She’s in the only library here, so it shouldn’t be hard to find her. Got that?”

It was Castor. He had a small bump on right side of his face, from a disorderly young colt's drunken swings.

“Twilight Sparkle, library, all right. Got it.”

He gave me a cautious stare before continuing.

“All right. Before you go, a warning. Watch yourself. Things around here can get a little... strange. They’re good ponies, though, most of them. You just keep your hooves clean, and you ought to be fine.”

“Uh... Okay. Thanks.”

The pair then flapped and took off, heading back to Canterlot.

Castor’s speech put me at unease. What could possibly happen in this small town that could warrant such a speech? Trying to ignore it, I decided I had to go into town at some point or another. I buried the words for later review in my mind, and readjusted my cloak before I continued forward, heaving a sigh as I went.
