Midnight's Lesson in Friendship
Chapter 34: Hearth's Warming Situation
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAs the weeks went by, the snow has become worse. Although with the help of some ponies, the streets remained clear. Midnight helped with the paths to his house and to Oracle's. The rest of Ponyville and all of Equestria began decorating for one of the biggest holidays of the year, Hearth's Warming Eve. However, everypony but one knew about this. Midnight had no idea what Hearth's Warming was, nor did anypony have time to tell them. However, Midnight was told when he visited Oracle. She was decorating her place with a few simple decorations. Rubyrumor was helping her, since she could fly and reach higher than Oracle.
"Hearth's Warming is a holiday that passes in the winter months" explained Oracle. "It's about friendship, harmony, and…"
"PRESENTS!" shouted Rubyrumor from a cloud of smoke. Both Midnight and Oracle jumped back. Midnight recovered from the shock and caught all of the glass decorations in his levitation magic. Oracle was helped up by Cirria and Rubyrumor was growled at by Nova. Rubyrumor chuckled as her body formed into a cloud and sank to the ground, reforming into her true form. "On Hearth's Warming, you get presents from other ponies!" she shouted. She seemed excited, but then her ears drooped to the sides. "But…I never got a present from anypony…"
Nova stopped growling when he sensed her sadness. Oracle gave her a small hug, which was also joined by Cirria. Midnight, however, placed all of the ornaments down. He parted for the door as he placed his scarf on, "I will be right back." Nova barked and followed Midnight out the door. Midnight smiled as Nova hopped onto his back. Nova grew, but only slightly. It was only a matter of time before he grew into the same size of a Lupus Major.
Midnight headed into Ponyville, looking at the stores in the streets. He needed to find a special present for Oracle, but he had no idea what to get her. "Oh man… what if I don't find the right gift?" Midnight spoke to himself. "What CAN I get her…? Paint supplies… no, I don't want to make her busy. Perhaps a book…? No, that can't be right either. Gift giving is harder than it seems… What would happen if I don't find her a gift…? OH CELESTIA! What if she doesn't want to see me again?! WHAT IF SHE STOPS LOVING ME?!"
Midnight felt a sharp sudden pain in his leg, causing him to scream. He looked down and saw Nova, biting his leg. He got off and growled at Midnight, shaking his head. Despite the first action, Midnight understood what he was telling him. "You're right Nova, Oracle would not dump me…" he assured himself. "Thanks for breaking me out of it. But next time, do something besides a bite. Those teeth are sharp!"
Nova whined while his tail slumped between his legs and his ears drooped. Midnight gently patted his head, cheering the puppy up instantly. Midnight restarted his search for the gift. Nova barked from beside a store window, signaling Midnight to come over. However Midnight stopped short as he shot Nova a look, "Very funny Nova…" The window held displays for wedding rings. Nova made a noise that sounded like laughter. Midnight ran down the street, but noticed that it was beginning to get windy. The Carousel Boutique was near, so Midnight headed towards it. Maybe Rarity could help him.
Rarity was inside; tidying up the place for whatever customer would arrive. The door opened with Midnight stepping inside, along with a freezing breeze that flowed through. Rarity shivered but only for a second as Midnight closed the door. "Why hello Midnight" Rarity said, "What are you doing out on this cold and freezing night?"
"I've been out finding Oracle a Hearth's Warming gift" he said. "This year is my first year, so I don't want to mess it up. Nova has been trying to help, but his idea wasn't working…"
"Now what did the little puppy suggest…?"
"A wedding ring…"
Rarity put a hoof to her mouth before her laughter escaped at its fullest. Midnight rolled his eyes as he approached her, "Rarity… do you have any idea what I could give her…?"
Rarity looked around, but mostly behind Midnight at the door. "Listen" she said, "I was planning on giving her this whenever she attended a special evening, but I believe you deserve to give it to her more than I." With that, Rarity lead Midnight to her back room. He was stumped, most of what was back here were rolls of fabric or accessories. However, Rarity's horn glowed as the back cabinet's doors opened. Midnight gasped at what she pulled out. His eyes shimmered with excitement, "Rarity, you're a fashion genius!" Rarity blushed as she quickly tucked her gift away nicely and neatly into a box. She was about to wrap it, but Midnight wanted to do it.
A few barks caught Rarity's attention. She turned to see Nova digging through her gemstone case. However, he was gently placing a few on the ground beside him instead of throwing them everywhere. Rarity smiled, "Oh Nova, you are possibly the most well behaved wild animal I know…" She noticed that Nova pushed the gems he placed out towards her and barked. "Oh, you want to have those…?" Nova barked as he nodded his head. Rarity smiled and patted his little head, "Oh why sure dear, let me just put those in a small bag."
Nova wagged his tail as Rarity levitated a bag over and placed each of the gems carefully into the sack. When she strapped it to Nova, he gave Rarity a small thank you lick. Rarity giggled however she heard some straining. "Uh… Rarity… a little help please…?"
Rarity turned and nearly exploded in laughter. The box that Oracle's gift was in was still unwrapped. The wrapping paper was around Midnight. Thankfully his wrapping job was loose. But, he somehow managed to tie his front legs together, wrap his body with his head spikes piercing through the paper, and managed to wrap one of his wings against his body. Rarity contained herself and helped remove the wrapping paper. After careful consideration, Midnight let Rarity wrap the gift. After everything was done, the package was securely fastened to Midnight's back.
"Thanks for everything Rarity…" said Midnight.
"Oh no dear, it is nothing really" she replied. "Consider it a Hearth's Warming gift of your own…"
Midnight thanked Rarity again and then left the boutique. The sky was beginning to get dark, so Midnight needed to get home and quick. Nova's keen eyesight would help when it would get too dark. Midnight trotted through the snowy streets carefully. His wings provided to be excellent cover for Oracle's gift. But the snow on his head and body was beginning to weigh him down.
Things became worse once Midnight entered the forest. Everything was darker than it should have been. Nova was able to see, but Midnight wasn't. He tripped over a root or rock that he was unable to see. It would take forever for Midnight to get home, but he then saw something. A little blue flame, no bigger than the palm of his hoof…er…claw… floated out in the distance. The area around it was illuminated nonetheless. Midnight walked over towards it but never touched it. Then, another small flame appeared behind it. What Midnight saw appeared to be a unicorn horn. Midnight ran past the second one, and sure enough, he ran into a pony.
The pony was strangely an alicorn. Her coat was a bright pink while her tail and mane were a strange shade of green. Her horn was strangely white and her eyes shared the same hue as her mane. Her cutie mark appeared to be one large blue flame surrounded by a few smaller ones. The pony rubbed her head and gasped at Midnight. However she quickly calmed down, "Oh, you must be Midnight…"
Midnight was confused, "Wait… how do you…?"
"Oh come on! Everypony knows your name now! You're practically famous! You saved Canterlot from the Changelings, you rescued Prince Thorn, what will you do next?!" Midnight stood perplexed as the strange alicorn bowed slightly, "Well, I know you but you don't know me. My name is Wisp. And right now, I'm illuminating paths for the dark days of winter. I only do so far in Everfree."
Midnight finally snapped out of his silent stance, "Wisp… maybe you can help me. You see, my girlfriend lives in Everfree, and I am staying there for a while… so…"
Wisp nodded as her horn glowed. Several flames began to swirl around it, startling Nova a little. Midnight soon had an idea, "Hey Nova… mind if I borrow a few of those gems…?"

Finally, that faithful day came. The day was Hearth's Warming, and surrounded by Oracle's paintings were a pile of presents. They weren't just for the small family of Midnight, Oracle and Cirria; their friends were there too. Each gift was handed out to their rightful owner. Each pony received a very special gift from one of them. Lightning and Fluttershy were next to each other the entire time. Cirria received many gifts, although most small, she loved them. The cutest display ever was Nova giving Rubyrumor a bright purple gemstone that he got from rarity's shop. Most ponies awed at this display. But, Midnight was not there.
Silence cast over the group once one pony saw Midnight. In his magic was a bright green present wrapped with a blue bow. Rarity nearly squealed as he brought it over to Oracle. "Happy Hearth's Warming Oracle…" he said.
Oracle gently ripped the paper off of the present and then opened the box. She gasped at what was inside. Midnight, helping her out, levitated her present into the air, allowing everypony to see. Inside the box was a dress made by Rarity herself. The main colors of the dress were light blue, green, and pink. What made it special was that the dress's design seemed to be as if Oracle's tail was covering the entire thing. Midnight's magic allowed it to slip over her, allowing everypony to see how it looked. Midnight gasped at how beautiful she looked. Rarity screamed to herself with how well she did. Oracle blushed as she nuzzled Midnight, "Midnight, this is…"
"Wait Oracle" he interrupted her, "There is one last present…"
Oracle shuffled through the box once again to look for her other present. Another loud gasp escaped her mouth as soon as she saw it. This time she grabbed it with her hooves and raised it up. Everypony gasped when they saw it. It was a necklace made with several gemstones. But the design was nearly flawless. The gemstones were shaped and crafted to look almost like Oracle's cutie mark. Oracle turned to Midnight once she placed it around her neck.
"I figured that when you had that dress on it would hide your beautiful cutie mark" said Midnight. "So I asked this pony to help with some gemstones and…"
Midnight never finished his sentence as Oracle gave his a big kiss. Midnight was not even expecting it, so he was more surprised than anypony. Oracle broke the kiss and smiled. Midnight fainted once again from Oracle's display of love. Everypony giggled but one. "Ew mom!" shouted Cirria, "How can you do that?!"
