Midnight's Lesson in Friendship
Chapter 14: The Trouble with Dark Magic
Previous Chapter Next ChapterMidnight walked through town, saying hello to the occasional pony that greeted him. Some of the ponies still gave him bad looks, but he didn't take them too badly. He headed back to the library where Twilight should be. Once he opened the door, Midnight found Spike on the floor rubbing his head. Several scrolls were scattered across the floor. Using the levitation magic, Midnight gathered up all of the scrolls and collected them into a pile. Spike knocked out of his daze and grabbed them.
"Thanks…" he said. "Your magic isn't evil at all…"
Midnight was confused, "What do you mean my magic isn't evil?"
Spike placed the scrolls down and walked to Twilight's reading desk. He grabbed the book and placed it down in front of Midnight. Midnight read the title, "Forbidden Spells and Dark Magic." "I don't think knowing two spells in this book is considered a good thing" he continued.
Midnight was shocked that either Spike or Twilight found what his spells were. He was even more surprised that the spells he knew were forbidden. Twilight walked into the room and stepped back from seeing Midnight. Spike walked up the stairs with his hands full of scrolls. The room was silent as Midnight and Twilight never even spoke. The silence was broken by a loud burp from the top of the stairs. Spike ran back down part of the stairs, "Uh…Twilight…I got a letter for you…" Twilight used her spell to get it and Spike walked back up the stairs. Twilight opened the letter and sighed when she read it.
"Alright Midnight…you will be fine…" she said. Midnight was confused by this, but Twilight floated the book towards him. "I know this sounds bad, but you need to read this book." Midnight used his levitation spell and placed the book back on a shelf. Twilight rolled her eyes and brought the book back down, "I already asked Princess Celestia, you can learn more of these…"
"Twilight, hold on!" he shouted. Twilight was surprised to hear Midnight raise his voice. He has never done that around her before. "Twilight, what exactly are you doing? What does this spell book have to do with me?"
Twilight inhaled then exhaled lightly. "Midnight, two nights ago was Night Mare Night" she explained. "You used a spell that was unknown to me, so I looked it up. I found it in this book. It is known as the Catastrophe Copy spell; a spell that allows the user to copy almost anything and increase the power to dangerous levels." Midnight's eyes widened when she explained the spell. But, Twilight continued. "Another spell you used I found inside the contents of that book. You used it once around Sparkplug. It was the Cancelation spell; which prevent him from using his magic. You can weaken the strength of it or otherwise cancel it out completely."
Midnight looked at the book. He focused on the words "Dark" and "Forbidden." He backed away from the book in fear. Midnight wanted to be good, not evil. Those spells were forbidden for a reason. Twilight noticed this and walked up to him. "It's alright Midnight, just because you know those spells doesn't mean you are evil" she assured him. "Those spells could be useful for some cases. I can help you control them too. Here…"
Twilight levitated a book off the shelf with her magic and held it in front of Midnight. "Try a Cancelation spell…just prevent my magic from holding this book."
Midnight was worried but he attempted it anyway. His straight spike began to glow a shade of black. The book became surrounded in black light then suddenly crashed to the ground with great force. This shocked both Twilight and Midnight. But Midnight's magic continued. The books began to fall off the shelves and slam onto the floor. One made the wooden floor crack underneath. The light vanished from the books as well as his spike. Midnight backed up in fear. Spike peered from the very top of the stairs, "Uh…I'm no expert on magic…but I don't think that stopped the spell…"
Twilight shot a glare to Spike that made him walk back upstairs. Twilight lifted the spell book up close to her and flipped through the pages. She landed on a page then cleared her throat, "You just used a Reversing Spell. It makes the spell cause the opposite effect of what it intended to do. You sure know a few of these…" Twilight lifted the book and lifted a few pieces of paper along with them. She then levitated the covered book to Midnight. Midnight grabbed it, but the paper caused it to slip. Twilight giggled at Midnight's struggles and placed a holstered sack on his back. The book was placed in the sacks and covered with the top.
"I get the sack but what's with the paper…?" he asked.
"I highly doubt some ponies would let you go if they saw a book with "Forbidden" at the top of it" she replied.
Midnight smiled and thanked her. He mentioned that he would return hers once he was done. There was another thing to add to his checklist, an item sack. He left the Library and began to trek home. Midnight had no idea what to do. Sure, Twilight was nice enough to give him the book, but they were forbidden spells. Princess Celestia may have given him permission, but he was still worried. Speaking of being worried, Midnight hasn't seen Oracle lately. He hoped that his leaving didn't do much to her.
Midnight crossed town with no trouble. He entered his house and threw the sack onto his bed. The book flew out of the sack and landed on the floor. Midnight glanced at it, "That was weird." Midnight used his levitation and placed the book on his shelf. But, something inside him wanted to look at its contents. He wasn't sure if it was curiosity or something else, but Midnight opened the book. He started on page one and just skimmed through. Midnight was scared of half of these spells, just their names; Horror Reanimation, Disaster Destruction, Fatal Fire, all of these sounded horrible! Midnight founded one that seems to be pretty harmless to try. It was called a Tremor Stomp.
Midnight wandered outside and walked behind his house a bit. The book said to concentrate his magic on the ground and then slam his front…claws onto the surface. Midnight concentrated, a dark aura forming along his spike. He slammed his claws down, but the effect wasn't as expected. The ground shook violently, creating a crack where he once was and it branched out across the ground. Midnight became surprised and stumbled back. He fell on his back and ran back into his house. The tremors stopped and Midnight was scared out of his mind. He put the book deep into his shelf to where he couldn't even tell which one it was. Midnight went to his bed and quickly covered himself up.
"I can't believe that I can do all of this" he said. "Why must I be the one with this curse…no pony will care for me…"
But, as quickly as it appeared, Midnight's sadness quickly vanished. That was not true, there was one pony. The one pony that truly cared for him was Oracle. She had the same troubles as him when she was a filly. Not as much when he was a colt, but she still had troubles. Midnight quickly climbed out of bed and went out the door. Nightfall began to turn again, but Midnight was going to find her.
