Chapter 1: Open For Business

Open For Business

It was another bright and sunny day in Ponyville, and Rarity was just finishing up the latest of her  dress designs. Oh sure she had commissions from popular ponies, as well as national exposure. But, the citizens of Ponyville themselves never really frequented the shop, which in a way disappointed her.

Rarity was a social pony, as well as very generous, and often wondered why she chose to set up shop here, of all places. She would get the same commissions and exposure no matter where her shop was located. She only remained because of her friends, and even they didn't shop here as often as they should. That was something that needed to be rectified, she thought as she began to straighten up some bolts of errant fabric.

Then she remembered that the place was called Carousel Boutique, after all. Perhaps it was time to put that last part of the name to work. Yes! She could sell other items besides dresses, and get to know the other ponies around town, much like Pinkie Pie's parties.

But what to sell? she tapped a hoof to her chin in thought.

“Ideaaaa!” she sang out. If you want to get to know ponies on a personal level, sell personal items. That was a given, but just what kind of personal items? She already sold jewelry, which was worn just about as much as her dresses. She stared at her reflection for a moment, her mind mulling over the types of objects she could sell, when she realized that a lot of the ponies in Ponyville found her very attractive. Putting two and two together, she figured that she would be generous enough to sell items that would bestow pleasure onto her friends and the other ponies. That way, those leering stallions could have their wish fulfilled without Rarity sacrificing her body to them.

She wondered how it would go over, the town being full of usually upright ponies. Then again, her own friends shown that they had quirks and kinks. Everypony was far from perfect, especially when that time of the month came around.

Soon, she began making a list of items to carry for such a purpose, humming to herself as the quill floated over the scroll. In the back of her mind, she felt that not only was she being generous enough to do such a risky thing to make the ponies happy, but this also would provide her a window into the minds of the ponies she barely paid attention to on the street. She bit her lip, wondering if this would be right. The guilt was maddening, but the prospect of spreading joy was greater. There was absolutely nothing wrong with nature.

She was amazed at the selection of stock there was to order from. Rubber toys shaped like the anatomy of other animals besides ponies. Chains....bridles...blinders....whips....even harnesses and saddles made for such “games”. The unicorn knew very well how perverse this simple act of nature could become, but that just made it more fun for them she supposed. She certainly wouldn't be subjected to saddles and whips like she was a common mule. That was the mindest of those dreadful Diamond Dogs.

Shaking her head, Rarity's mind wandered to another problem. She had to be sure to keep Sweetie Bell out of the room they would be kept in, as well as be discreet about her having such things without the other children in town seeing or knowing about them. She couldn't put flyers up all over town, that would be wrong.

Of course, there was also the matter of Pinkie Pie's big mouth. She smirked as her eyes fell on a selection of ball gags. No, she shook her head, that wouldn't be right. Besides, word of mouth would be good for business after all. Pinkie was smart enough to not say such things around children, she hoped.

So her new business venture began with a simple order form, filled to the brim with normal and kink alike. Rarity frowned at the list of depravity before her, but resigned to the thought that she didn't have to experience any of this, and it would probably be best if her clientele didn't relay the experiences to her afterwards. She did respect privacy after all, unlike SOME ponies.

Twilight Sparkle was trotting through town, having just finished shopping for food and magic supplies. The saddlebags draped across her back were filled with various fruits and vegetables, as well as some more esoteric items that she had to order from Canterlot. She doubted Ponyville would sell hazardous chemicals or dragon scales. If a pony didn't know better, they would think she was concocting a witches brew instead of magic spells.

She kept her eyes peeled for Rainbow Dash, who said she had a message for her. Soon she saw the rainbow maned Pegasus kicking clouds away, moving faster than normal as if she couldn't wait to get the job done.

“Hey, Dash!” she called. “What did you want to tell me?”

The sky blue Pegasus swooped down in front of the unicorn, her smile beaming as she stood upright in the air, her wings flapping faster than usual in anticipation.

“I just saw a buncha delivery ponies bringing a bunch of boxes into Carousel Boutique! I bet Rarity's planning something big. We should go check it out!” she threw her hooves into the air as she blurted out this news.

“I don't know. We really don't wear dresses all the time.” Twilight glanced away in thought.

Dash shook her head. “No, these didn't look like dressmaking supplies. Some of them were marked with weird labels and warnings. Maybe she's building a secret lab or something.”

“Don't be ridiculous.” Twilight replied dryly, shoving Dash off with a playful hoof. After the whole incident with Zecora, Twilight thought her friends learned not to jump to conclusions like that, especially insane ones. “Besides, if anypony is going to have a secret lab, it's me.” she sighed, placing the hoof she pointed to herself with back on the ground. “But I guess we can go check it out.”

Dash flipped in the air and was already heading there. Twilight rolled her eyes and followed, hoping that this wasn't more trouble than she needed right now. When she arrived, Dash landed in front of the door and gave a loud knock. Rarity quickly answered.

“Darlings, what is it?” she asked, glancing back and forth at the two confused faces at her door.

“What'cha got goin on in there, Rarity?” Dash asked, trying to glance over the unicorn's shoulders into the shop, but was obscured by Rarity's head at every turn, nearly culminating in her getting a horn in the eye.

“Oh nothing dear. Just renewing my inventory.” she glanced around to make sure no other pony could hear, then leaned in close, her blue eyes narrowing suspiciously as she whispered. “You're my friends, so you're the first to know. I'm starting an actual 'boutique' business now.”

“But you sell dresses.” Twilight observed. “Isn't that was a boutique is for?”

“Yes, darling, but they can also be so much more.” Rarity waved a hoof. “But how many ponies here actually WEAR my designs? No, darlings, I'm going into the novelty business!”

“Well, Pinkie Pie would like that. Buying all her pranks and stuff.” Dash nodded.

“No no no! ADULT novelties!”

Rainbow Dash gasped as if Rarity had said some horrible word or insult. “Can you do that?” she asked, her voice cracking with surprise.

“What are adult novelties?” Twilight asked, eliciting stares and uncomfortable silence from the other two, the only sounds now were Dash's beating wings and the blood rushing to Twilight's face as she blushed under the scrutiny.

“Seriously?” Dash asked, turning to face the purple unicorn, who was now staring at the floor.

“Shall I explain it to her, dear?” Rarity volunteered.

“Nah, I'll do it.” Dash waved a passive hoof then flew over next to Twilight, whispering in her ear. After a few long minuets of hearing nothing but feathers rustling and muffled whispers, Twilight's gaze snapped up from the floor as she gasped in surprise, her blush growing a deeper shade of red. “You want to sell, THAT?” she finally asked, now understanding what 'adult novelties' meant.

“Well, of course. Is that wrong?”

“Well, no...but, it doesn't seem right either.” Twilight explained.

“Oh, you two just don't understand yet.” Rarity shook her mane and tail elegantly as she spoke. “Someday you two will find colts of your own, then it will all make perfect sense.”

“Yeah...colts...” Dash managed a weak chuckle as it was her turn to blush and glance away in embarrassment as she rubbed the back of her head.

“Until then, I would appreciate the word of mouth advertising you could provide for me. I can't very well hang up such advertisements with children around.” Rarity continued, poking at her coiffed mane with a hoof absentmindedly.

“Well, okay...” Twilight reluctantly agreed, not that this was something you would go telling everypony anyway.

`“Excellent! See you then!” she ushered the two out of her shop and slammed the door, eager to get to work.

Twilight and Dash exchanged worried glances. “Well, what could go wrong?” Twilight sighed, glancing up at Dash hovering beside her wearing an expression more of confusion than fear.
