CHAPTER 9: CHANGELING

Chrysalis's eyes snapped wide as she found herself in what appeared to be an endless black tube. At her side was her darker half; smirking at her as she regarded her current self. "I'm glad to see you're ready," she chuckled. Chrysalis simply looked around in awe as suddenly they were flying forward; as if being forced to propel in that direction. She simply stared on ahead as the endless tube became a stream of memories, flashing before her eyes and surrounding her like a picture book. The feeling was overwhelming as it felt like her mind was being stuffed with information, but not in a discomforting fashion similar to the first time; this time it was different. The process felt linear; gentle, smooth, it felt like it was a much more organized process this time. Chrysalis could feel the tears swell in her eyes as the memories came back to her, past experiences, friends, days she cherished and enjoyed, all these memories pained her. To become a part of something you were now certain was lost once again, was a tragic experience. Chrysalis began to recite things to herself as she was steadily remembering everything, all the ones she cared about, the beautiful kingdom of changelings, but, there was still something that was missing. There was still the most important memory left, still but a haze in her thoughts.

"Momma, Ta'lak, Old Mel'zaraf; I'm sorry...I'm so so sorry...."

Chrysalis had tears streaming down her cheeks as her eyes were wide. She remained there, frozen in this stream of endless memories as the foalhood she'd lost was all coming back to her. She seemed to be relishing in the flashing pictures in her mind as she could only continue to be lost in nostalgia. It all felt so unreal, these emotions that just crashed into her like a truck, acting upon themselves as if they had wills of their own. In mere instants she felt she knew all these faces so intimately once again, in such a simple, fleeting moment. It was the way memories worked afterall.

The darker Chrysalis could only smirk, seeing the desired reaction upon her current self's face. She spoke in a satisfied tone "I'm glad to see you're realizing what all this means. But how about we finally get to the day that changed everything hm?"

Chrysalis could only look at her darker half; hesitant on whether or not she truly wanted to see how that fateful day played out. How she ended up being one of the sole survivors of the massacre of her race. Now that she could clearly remember majority of the ones she cared about in days long gone, did she truly want to see what had happened to them? Chrysalis was about to decline when suddenly her kinder self spoke from nearby.

"Chrysalis, there is always two sides to every story. There is right and wrong on both sides, I know you're hurting but going down this road doesn't have to mean you have to harbor such negative feel-"

Chrysalis snapped; her eyes wide and filled with rage, she practically snarled at her supposedly kinder half. She was unaware of how angry she was in a way; feeling all she could do was yell on impulse when she felt the need to respond. "What do you know!? You were clueless!"

Chrysalis's kinder half moved back some, she felt struck. Those words; as much as she wanted to say they weren't, even she knew they were true. Her brows furrowed in discomfort as her expression worsened, she felt saddened, and grew silent.

Chrysalis looked to her darker half with a determined expression, any sign of fear she once had was now gone. It was as if when she'd noticed how weak and vulnerable she currently was, it empowered her to be stronger, better, more keen on accepting reality. And in order to accept reality she had to get the full picture. She gave a nod of approval before saying "Show me."

The darker Chrysalis crossed her hooves, smirking at her current self before nodding to her in understanding.

With that Chrysalis felt like she'd suddenly been forced down by gravity, losing her footing and plummeting deep into an ocean of pure black below. She screamed as she fell, hitting the ebon black pool; sinking and feeling unable to swim to the surface. She felt like she was drowning; she clawed at the water attempting to swim upward, but she just continued to sink. There was no escaping this, this was how it was meant to go. Chrysalis was panicking of course, but eventually she blacked out, and as she did so, her darker half spoke once again.

Try not to lose it in there.

Chrysalis suddenly felt a cool breeze brush past her as she steadily opened her eyes. What she saw caused her to remain in place, she wasn't really sure what to think about the situation. She was looking up at a gorgeous blue sky, with thick white clouds, and the sun shining overhead. Chrysalis then decided to lean up, as her eyes widened at the mesmerizing sight, surrounding her were multiple changelings, going about their usual business. She was back in the kingdom, back before It'd been destroyed, back when it was beautiful. And surprisingly she knew where she was, she glanced around as she recognized everything, she was in the central courtyard, where multiple hive-like buildings surrounded her. Fastened in the middle was a beautiful black fountain which spewed crystal clear water. And here down south, water was quite a precious thing. Chrysalis could feel a smile creep onto her face as she chuckled, bouncing to her hooves as she gazed around. "T-The courtyard! Oh it feels like it was just yesterday!" The memories being so fresh in her mind, it literally did feel like it was just yesterday since she'd been here.

As she continued to admire the scenery, she'd suddenly heard the hurried trots of somepony nearby approaching her position. She turned to see who it was, and upon looking there was instant recognization between the two. It was another changeling, he didn't look too unique in particular, he bared a similar appearance to most other changelings. He let off a heavy sigh as he spoke in an impatient tone. "There you are Chrysalis, I've been looking all over for you."

Chrysalis's eyes swelled with tears as she yelled out "Ta'lak!" She ran to embrace him but as she attempted to do so, she found that she phased through him like she wasn't even there. This caused her to feel overwhlemed with shock and confusion as she turned around, noticing she was still standing there, yet she had a grumpy demeanor. Chrysalis raised a brow, puzzled as she suddenly heard her darker half speak once again.

Remember, we're just observers, these are only your memories Chrysalis, nothing more.

Chrysalis's heart sank; yes, memories, that's what these were. No matter how much she wanted to embrace her old friend, a friend she'd known since she was a foal, she couldn't. All she could do was be forced to watch the events unfold before her, unable to interfere. And so she did, solemnly, she was at least grateful she could at least see him. Chrysalis couldn't help but smile after that brief moment, it was so nice, to be able to see herself and Ta'lak on such a calm day. A day in her beautiful home and kingdom. Chrysalis simply continued to look on and observe.

The Chrysalis of that time seemed quite grumpy based on her demeanor. She regarded Ta'lak with a small scowl before crossing her hooves in annoyance. "Ugh, that's the point Ta'lak, you weren't supposed to find me. Comon can't you just relax for a little bit and not think about what needs to be done and more about the little things?"

Ta'lak sighed once again followed by a slight shrug. "Hey they're your mom's orders alright. I'm just doing what I need to. Plus she trusts me to watch over you, you always seem to get yourself into all kinds of trouble."

Chrysalis puckered her lower lip, a bit offended by what he just said as Ta'lak simply laughed. "Haha I'm just kidding alright, anyway, how let's head on over to the Grand Hive, your mom's waiting for you."

Chrysalis groaned as she moved to his side, rolling her eyes as she did so. They then began a slow steady trot through the kingdom of changelings, as they did so numerous other changelings regarded Chrysalis with a courteous bow then continued onward. Chrysalis was obviously one of royalty in the city if not more. But she paid no mind to the gestures, and simply continued to walk beside Ta'lak as if they were all so natural to her.

As the current Chrysalis continued to observe, she felt a little disgusted by herself for the fact she never did return their bows often. That she always took them as things that weren't very important. Based on what she saw when she'd first woken up, she now regretted not showing them more respect. She muttered softly to herself "I'm sorry," Then simply continued to observe.

As they proceeded to trot towards the Grand Hive, Ta'lak glanced over at Chrysalis muttering. "Hey, have you heard about the attacks recently? Your mom was really concerned about whether or not you were involved in them. I'm pretty sure that's something she's going to talk to you about."

Chrysalis raised a brow at him, puzzled as she responded. "What? Oh; those attacks, yea of course I have. I don't live under a rock you know. And I say good for them, It's about time we start showing those ponies that If they refuse to accept us, we might as well show them who's top of the food chain."

Ta'lak sighed heavily before shaking you head. "See Chrysalis, you got it all wrong. It doesn't matter who's top of the food chain, what matters is forming a lasting bond of neutrality with the ponies. We don't want to bring trouble to our doorstep. For so many years we've managed to keep the peace between us and the other races, sure it's been hard and still they refuse to accept us, but we're learning to live as they do, with the land instead of off it, know what I mean? I see where you're coming from of course, but you gotta think about what's best for all of us. You're going to be the next queen for changeling's sake."

Chrysalis then groaned once more, followed by another eye roll as she felt irked by Ta'lak's words. She then looked at him with determination, eager to win in this familiar debate. "Listen here Ta'lak, this is why we're friends, because we don't agree on everything. It makes things interesting and fun, and I love you for it, but you gotta accept when you're wrong alright. We're better than the ponies, we can do things they only dream of, even with their horns and little books they can't do what we do. We can feed off something practically unlimited in most races. And it's not like we've been really attacking them, we're just feeding off small settlements, tch, I bet the ponies don't even notice when they wake up. Sure their moods will be a little crappier but It's not like it really affects them all that bad. You're really over thinking this Ta'lak."

Ta'lak couldn't help but sigh, but smile as well. He shrugged somewhat "Eh; you know, these debates with you always make me feel at home. But about the attacks; listen, I just feel the ponies leaders wouldn't react too kindly to even 'some' of us attacking small settlements, they have enough doubts about our kind already. I don't want a few rebellious changelings costing us everything is all. Oh yea; we also need to take a small pitstop at Shek'zara, Old Mel'Zaraf wanted to talk to you about something."

Chrysalis smirked somewhat "Gosh mom really has her hold on you doesn't she? You guys think so much alike that it makes me wonder how I could possibly be her daughter when you aren't even her son. I won't blame changelings just because they want to live like their meant to, no matter what these ponies think, It's our way of life. It's not like we're killing them or anything, they need to learn to understand that." They both laughed softly at the light joke before Chrysalis continued. "And Old Mel'Zaraf? What does he want? I don't recall asking him for anything."

Ta'lak just shook his head, signaling he didn't know either. "I'm not sure, just said he wanted to see you on our way back."

They both shrugged in unison, as they continued to have some casual conversation along the way.

Shek'zara, a district of the kingdom Chrysalis detested greatly. She always hated coming here, even as she observed this memory she could still feel her hatred for it. Both her current self and her memory self wore that same exact scowl. Shek'zara was a district of reformation, it was where changelings slowly attempted to learn to live like ponies, where they attempted to diverge from their roots. It was sort of like a trade district, here you'd see many different items such as pony's magazines, toys, accessories, even clothes. It was quite laughable, how some changelings were so dedicated for change they even tried to remodel parts of the kingdom after pony society. The most common thing that was housed here though was food, normal food, food that ponies would eat such as fruits and vegetables. This was the new vision for changeling society, fully approved by Chrysalis's mother of course. It would build good relations with the other kingdoms she proclaimed. It disgusted Chrysalis however; and she doubted she'd ever change that about herself.

Chrysalis's nose wrinkled in disgust as she looked to Ta'lak impatiently. "Can we hurry this up, I don't want to be here any longer; Shek'zara has always been quite the eyesore."

Ta'lak nodded "Yea, I told you we're just stopping by to see Old Mel'Zaraf, it's no big deal Chrysalis. Sheesh; what's your beef with ponies anyway, it's not like they ever did anything to you personally."

Chrysalis immediately turned to her friend, snapping at him angrily. "Never did anything to me!? Look what they did to my future kingdom! What they're continuing to do! And then they just look down on us and think of us as some lowly savage race?! And then you go and say they never did anything to me personally!?"

Many changelings stopped, looking at Chrysalis curiously. Chrysalis felt a light blush forming around her cheeks as she lowered her head feeling embarrassed about her little display.

Ta'lak looked at Chrysalis reassuringly with a soft smile. "Listen, I'm sorry I said that, I was out of line to assume that Chrysalis. Anyway let's hurry this up, I'm sure you want to get out of here. Plus your mom's still waiting for us."

The two changelings soon entered a small shop, which obviously belonged to the one they'd been looking for. The changeling known as Mel'Zaraf, meaning old wise one. The walls of the shop were made of a thick shell like material as were majority of the things in the kingdom of changelings. Ta'lak soon called out for the old changeling. "Hey we're here Mel'Zaraf, you going to come out or what!?"

Soon emerging from a room in the back was the changeling himself. You could certainly tell he was old based on his withered appearance. He was a changeling who'd obviously seen much throughout his lifetime. As he noticed Ta'lak was accompanied by little Chrysalis he couldn't help but smile. Chrysalis hated coming to this place but Old Mel'Zaraf made things a little better. He'd known her since she was a newborn, personally, and he was also an advisor to her mother. A dear friend of the family you could say. "Why hello there you two, I'm glad to see you could spare an old changeling like myself some time. I know you two are quite busy these days. How is your mother Chrysalis?"

Chrysalis raised a brow at him, she kind of wanted to skip the casual conversation and get straight to the point. "You wanted to see me about something Mel'Zaraf? Sorry but mom is kind of waiting for me, she's okay though."

Old Mel'Zaraf laughed hoarsly then waved his hoof in the form of a gesture. "Ah forgive me; forgive me, anyway, yes yes; I did want to see you. You see Chrysalis, as you know I've been trying to learn more about the ways of the races outside our kingdom. And I've learned much in my time, I really need to discuss some of those things with you someday, but that's not the point, the point is this-" He looked at them both grimly before sighing heavily and continuing. "You see I've been experimenting with some of the multiple herbs and natural ingredients found about in Equestria. The zebras of the southlands have truly mastered things beyond magic it seems, and with the most practical of resources. It truly is amazing. But i'm getting of topic again yes yes; what I wanted to tell you was, I've learned to create a special dream remedy. It's effects vary every now and then but last night, I believe it showed me something horrifying, I believe it showed me; the future."

Chrysalis and Ta'lak looked at each other before letting off slight humored chuckles. They knew Old Mel'Zaraf was a little crazy sometimes but this was a little much. But they also knew that when he'd said something, most would be smart to take it to heart, he wasn't called wise one for nothing. So Chrysalis and Ta'lak held their tongues, deciding to withdraw their doubts for the moment and give the old changeling time to continue. They were young changelings of course, they were a little immature to their elders. Chrysalis spoke up "Alright Mel'Zaraf but what's that have to do with me?"

Mel'Zaraf sighed heavily before looking down, letting his words flow, he didn't need to make eye contact with them to say such things. In fact, he prefered not to. "You see, I saw a future where we were absent Chrysalis. A future absent of our kingdom, your mother, our race, we were nowhere to be seen. I saw a land, ruled by nothing but chaos. But I also saw hope, an alliance, gathered in order to even the odds against an almighty foe. Then from there, my vision went dark. I only wish for you to carry news of my concern to your mother, I shall speak with her about this later. Now go on you two, I'm sure you're tired of listening to an old changeling ramble." With that Old Mel'Zaraf went towards the back room once more.

Ta'lak's brows furrowed in discomfort for a second. But he didn't speak, he simply remained silent, keeping his thoughts to himself.

As Mel'Zaraf left; Chrysalis could only roll her eyes, somewhat amused by his supposed vision. But either way she'd carry his concerns over to her mother because she knew that's what was best. She wasn't ignorant enough to think she knew more than perhaps one of the wisest in their kingdom. But she couldn't force herself to believe this vision of his would come to pass, either way Chrysalis nudged her head towards Ta'lak who nodded in response, they both then made their way outside Old Mel'Zaraf's small shop.

They then continued on their way towards the Grand Hive.

As they made their way throughout the city, sunset had finally come. It took them some time to get to the Great Hive but Chrysalis couldn't help but slow her pace to admire the scenery of the kingdom and the beautiful orange lit sky. At the time of course she never would of guessed this would be the last time she could do such a thing in this place. She had no doubts that tomorrow would be another beautiful, ordinary day. She smiled at Ta'lak as they'd grown silent for the last couple of minutes. Ta'lak was doing just as she was, admiring the scenery as they approached the Grand Hive.

Chrysalis had a somewhat lost expression as she noticed Ta'lak's. He was so gentle, so kind, and he wanted the best for their race, as did Chrysalis. Their views differed greatly from each other on how to achieve that same desire, but what was important was that they had their kind's best interests in mind. Chrysalis didn't notice but her cheeks flushed somewhat, she was young yes, but even she had moments where she grew flustered in that special kind of way. She wasn't even certain what that feeling was, but the moment Ta'lak turned to regard her she shook her head putting on a familiar prideful look. Ta'lak laughed somewhat as he and Chrysalis then finally made it to the Grand Hive and stepped inside.

As the current Chrysalis continued to observe herself and Ta'lak go about this day, she couldn't help but smile and cry softly to herself at the same time. She felt blessed to be able to witness something like this in such perfect detail as it was happening, but felt depressed, she felt she had so many regrets remembering such things. But she remained strong, and continued to observe, continued to watch this day play out before her. Even though she knew she wouldn't enjoy the ending.

The inner workings of the Grand Hive were marvelous. It was changeling architecture at its best, the strange designs etched on the walls, and the way the windows and floor were decorated could only make one stare in awe. Of course the two young changelings didn't do that, they were so familiar with the place that everything had grown quite boring to them. The two of them made their way up the endless stairway as along the way they passed a multitude of guards, obviously going about their daily patrols through the Grand Hive.

As they eventually reached the floor that led to the Queen's chambers, Ta'lak regarded Chrysalis with a courteous bow similar in fashion to the changelings from earlier. He said earnestly "It's been my pleasure Princess."

Chrysalis gave an amused eye roll, then chuckled some before returning his bow. "And mine, I seriously think we're too smart for our age sometimes."

Ta'lak winked playfully. "Hey, that's our job. And you're our future queen, gotta know a lot about the world right?"

Chrysalis gave a nod in agreement before turning towards her mother's chamber door. "Right, later Ta'lak."

Ta'lak laughed before heading back down the stairs. "Later Chrysalis, I'll be at the courtyard if you need me."

Chrysalis smiled then made her way into her mother's room, eager to see her after this long day.

As Chrysalis entered the room, there she was, the Queen of changelings. She bore a very strong resemblance to Chrysalis, except her mane was fastened into a ponytail. She stood on the porch overlooking her precious kingdom as she turned to regard Chrysalis with a surprised smile "Oh there you are darling, I've been waiting for you. What took you so long?"

There was only a Queen in the kingdom of changelings. There was no king nor was there ever. Chrysalis had a father but he didn't play a specific role in the future queen's life, this was the way the changeling society was formed. Although It didn't mean Chrysalis's mother just chose a random subject, there was once one she to loved. But he was gone now, dead before Chrysalis even had a chance to meet him. Chrysalis's mother didn't go into detail on the matter, they both knew enough to understand what it meant.

Chrysalis put on a cheesy nervous smile as she shrugged, avoiding eye contact with her mother. "Oh uhm, It was Old Mel'Zaraf mom, he wanted me to tell you something." Chrysalis knew the true reason was that she and Ta'lak were busy taking their time caught up in the scenery, but she wouldn't mention that part.

Chrysalis's mother smiled at her before nudging her head a bit, signaling her daughter to come join her on the balcony. "Oh; I see, so what was it he wanted you to tell me? I miss that old changeling, I don't take enough time to visit him these days."

Chrysalis seemed disinterested in the topic as she simply said. "Eh, you should just talk to him later, it was kind of weird and confusing what he said. Something about his dreams or visions from some zebra brew."

Chryalis's mother raised a brow, looking at her daughter curiously. "Oh wow, I'll make sure to go talk to him early tomorrow morning, I'm sure he's quite beat right now hmhm."

Chrysalis then glanced up at her mother, still waiting for why she'd been called over here in the first place. "But mom, Ta'lak told me there was something you wanted to talk with me about?"

Chrysalis's mother remained silent for a brief moment before smiling, looking off towards the setting sun. "Yes; you see my daughter, It's not often enough we talk about your future. You see it isn't hard for me to notice your feelings regarding the pony race. I know you harbor ill will against them. I was hoping to discuss this with you."

Chrysalis winced somewhat as she'd felt quite offended by her mother's words. "What do you mean you need to talk with me about ponies mother? You're not going to change my mind about how I feel about them."

Chrysalis's mother laughed softly as she ran her hoof through her daughter's mane gently, looking down at her. "And I do not wish to, you have your beliefs, and your own reasons. I don't want to change that. I just want to offer you some advice my precious daughter, for one day you will be the Queen of changelings."

Chrysalis remained silent, but still had that grumpy demeanor about her as she simply listened to her mother.

"You see, I felt the same way as you a long time ago Chrysalis. But as I saw our race, how their treated outside these walls, how we're feared, yet also looked down upon. I realized with our blessings, we must also fight for our place on this world. There are many ways to go about it you could say. I want to seek a peaceful resolution by the end of all this. No matter how long it takes, I truly believe this is the best course of action for our race, I don't want us to have to see any bloodshed in our lifetimes. I want a future where you can grow up, and not feel the need to fight for your right to exist Chrysalis. I have no doubts you'll be a caring leader for our race, but I just want you to remember, there are always other options." She chuckled somewhat rubbing the top of her daughter's head once more.

Chrysalis's expression eased up a bit as she seemed to be contemplating her mother's words. Was she really going about this whole pony thing the wrong way? Although her mother wasn't saying she was wrong, she still felt perhaps, she should consider other options. Perhaps it was time the changelings forged a new destiny on Equestria, through more diplomatic means, if that were even possible for them. Chrysalis felt a smile creep onto her face. She simply said, "I understand what you're saying mom."

Chrysalis's mother brightened up somewhat as she heard those words. She couldn't help but feel a slight sense of relief as she lowered her frame and hugged her daughter tightly, muttering "I love you so much my precious little Chrysalis, I cannot wait to see what type of Queen you'll make. Just know that whatever you decide, you've already made me a proud mother."

Chrysalis felt her cheeks flush again as she returned her mother's hug. "Sheesh mom, haha no need to be all mushy!" Chrysalis paused for a moment and then smiled softly, nuzzling into her mother "But thanks."

They remained in that embrace, and as the current Chrysalis simply observed them. She felt the tears flow as she simply muttered pleadingly "Momma....." Her lower lip quivered as her body trembled. She wanted to join them, to be able to touch her mother one last time, to hug her affectionately and find comfort in her words. Chrysalis said it again, as she seemed grief struck, just staring at them "Momma...." She wished she could return to this day, change the inevitable future she knew would soon happen. And what pained her even more was the fact that she knew who her attackers would be, ponies that she'd grown to care for. Ponies she'd arguably grown to love, but as she watched she could only feel more and more betrayed. Betrayed by Celestia and Luna, betrayed by the entire pony race. Why did her friends and family deserve to die? She still couldn't see it, she still didn't understand. There was nothing here that convinced her of such things. She held her thoughts for the moment and just continued to observe, although it took all the strength she had not to break down entirely.

Chrysalis then moved away from her mother, that smile still placated on her face as she then headed for the door. As she prepared to leave she glanced back at her mother once more before saying "Hey mom I'm going to go play with Ta'lak, I'll be back later okay?"

Chrysalis's mother simply smiled softly at her daughter before nodding. "Of course darling, just make sure you be careful out there while playing. Also, I love you, stay safe."

Chrysalis nodded giving her mother a reassuring smile. "Love you to mom, and you know I will."

Chrysalis's mother then continued to look off into the distance from her porch as Chrysalis then left her mother's chambers, making her way back to the central courtyard area. Back to where Ta'lak said he'd be if she needed him.

It took Chrysalis a bit of time of course to make her way to the central courtyard. She had to make her way down the stairs of the Grand Hive which reasonably felt like an eternity, of course due to how big the place was. The changeling guards were still posted at their areas; remaining vigilant, but they seemed a little relaxed as well. Everyday was pretty much the same, there was no need to be highly alert, even though they were guards; they weren't robots. Even they had their flaws.

Chrysalis made her way through the kingdom once more, but she felt eager just to get to the central courtyard area, she really didn't feel like stopping to admire the scenery. She kind of just wanted to sit down and relax in her favorite place. She just wanted to discuss things with her close friend Ta'lak. She recalled doing that many times with him, some days they'd just sit there and debate or talk about funny things they'd seen recently. They'd talk for hours and hours about anything, only them, as they'd even stay there through some late nights, laughing and just continuing their discussions. Such moments seemed perfect to her, the most memorable. Chrysalis knew this would be another one of those types of days, those fun days where they'd just joke and laugh and perhaps argue about certain things. Perhaps todays topic would be about Old Mel'Zaraf's dream.

She trotted hurriedly as she eventually made it to the area, the kingdom was now a little more deserted considering the fact most changelings were actually heading to bed. It was getting late, but for some reason the pony Princess who had the ability to raise the night didn't do so as early as she usually did. Chrysalis didn't question it, she just seemed eager to reconvene with her friend. As she arrived; she glanced around a bit, then noticed he was sitting on one of the curbs nearby. He was simply looking up at the beautiful orange lit sky.

Chrysalis smirked somewhat playfully, before calling out "Fascinated by the color orange are you?"

Ta'lak blinked a bit as his eyes widened. The young changeling looked over towards the origin of the familiar voice before staring at Chrysalis, dumbfounded for a bit. He then laughed softly before waving a hoof at her, then he called right back to her. "Well actually I kind of am, got a problem with that Mrs.Grump!?"

Chrysalis rolled her eyes as she then began slowly trotting towards him. "What was that Mr.Smartalec?"

They simply continued to smile at each other as Chrysalis steadily came closer to him. It was deafly silent, It was actually quite a beautiful moment. The tranquility of the area, the soft sounds of the wind blowing in the distance, this was their world, where only they existed. Where they could relax, and play, and talk about the days of the past and future. This was why Chrysalis loved to be here, together they created cherished memories in perfect tranquility. They were friends until the end, and nothing, absolutely nothing, could break that relationship.

Ta'lak cocked his head to the left, speaking softly. "Hey Chrysalis, I wanted to ask you some-"

But before the little changeling could finish. It had already begun.

BOOM! A sound caused by a cataclysmic crash.

The world lit up, and turned an absolute white.

Chrysalis's eyes widened as she was forcefully flung back by a violent force followed by a scorching hot wind. She tossed and tumbled as it sounded like an explosion had erupted just where she'd been standing. As she skidded across the ground and eventually ended up some lengths away from the central courtyard, It took her a brief moment to gather up her senses. She was laying flat on her belly as she'd blacked out for a minute or so, she groaned in discomfort as she then blinked a few times. She could automatically pick up on the sound of chaos ensuing all around her; what was happening? She could even hear the sound of what seemed to be flames, something burning, of course the smell made it obvious even more obvious.

Chrysalis at this point staggered to her hooves. She was covered in dust and small bits of rubble. As she patted herself off she then looked ahead, immediately her eyes had snapped wide. What exactly was she looking at? Right where Ta'lak was just sitting, there was now a scorching brown sphere, which was slowly melting away as It'd been engulfed by blue and red flames. The giant sphere smelt sweet, and the damage It'd caused was enormous. The central courtyard was in ruins, the hive like buildings that were spread about were now but rubble. Changelings were already scurrying about outside attempting to make sense of the situation as Chrysalis was still in shock about the entire thing.

"Ta'lak?......" She couldn't wrap her mind around the reality of the situation just yet. She simply stared at the spot where he once sat, no more than a minute ago, when everything was normal and perfect as usual. She took a few trots forward, as if caught in a trance, was all this truly real? It was no more than a minute ago that everything was ordinary, now, in a mere instant, it was as if everything simply shattered. Was such a thing even possible? Chrysalis couldn't understand it if so, actually, she was in denial, thinking this was perhaps some sort of mistake or joke, or anything besides what it truly was. She repeated his name "Ta'lak?......" No response. Chrysalis remained silent with those same wide eyes as she noticed the sky now seemed black and crimson. It was as if the world had just ended, but everything was about to get much much worse.

Chrysalis blinked a bit, as hurtling from the sky, were more flaming brown spheres similar to the one that'd just hit the central courtyard area. They came down upon the kingdom like a meteor shower, Chrysalis could only watch in horror as everything seemed to crash and crumble right before her eyes. Was she lost in some sort of dream? Was this all really happening right now, just out of the blue? She was frozen in place as suddenly she noticed one of the spheres heading straight towards her position. Chrysalis just stood there, staring right at it as it descended as she was suddenly tackled.

"OOF!" Chrysalis tumbled once more; skidding across the ground. As she rubbed her head, she looked up to find she was saved by a changeling citizen, a female in specific.

The changeling was crying, but she gave a reassuring smile to her Princess, then nodded staggering to her hooves. She was hurt badly, green blood was oozing from her side but she seemed to ignore it. "P-Princess! I'm happy to see that you're alright! But please, now is not the time to be dallying around here! The city is under attack from an unknown enemy! We must hurry and get you to safety!"

That wounded changeling was quick to make sense of the situation, and Chrysalis never really put much thought into who she was, but still, she amazed her. Chrysalis attempted to process the information, that they were under attack, that everything that was happening was certainly real and she was in very real danger. That Ta'lak was dead in a matter of seconds. Chrysalis shook her head as her body trembled, how could this changeling remain so composed, so calm and collected even though she was dying, even though all the others were screaming and attempting to escape. Chrysalis didn't understand it, not any of it.

The wounded changeling simply continued to smile at Chrysalis as she then limped to her side. "Come my Princess, w-we must hurry and get you to the Grand Hive!" Suddenly the wounded changeling threw up some of her own blood as her legs trembled and her frame lowered. Chrysalis simply looked down at her in horror as the wounded changeling kept that same reassuring smile, even in these final moments. "Forgive me P-Princess, It seems, I'm out of, time......." And then she was gone. Chrysalis looked back in the direction of the courtyard once more, so many screaming, hurt, changelings. Some were like her, attempting to make sense of everything as they were caught in the flame which still to her horror, seemed to ceaselessly burn anything it made contact with to a crisp. It wrapped around some changelings, charring them to ash.

As Chrysalis continued to witness this traumatic event unfold, she felt like her sanity had shattered by this point. She placed her hooves on her head as her eyes were still wide, she was traumatized, shocked, losing her mind. She let off a piercing yell. Chrysalis felt at this point it was her fear carrying her along. She turned on impulse, running in the direction further into the kingdom, frightened, feeling that need to survive. She simply continued to run, run through the flames, and thanking any higher power that she hadn't been hit by one of those smoldering spheres by this point. She just ran and ran as fast as she could as the chaos around her simply continued, she looked to her left, to her right, more scorching, crumbling, hive structures, more of her kind burning before her very eyes. Their screams were agonizing, but she knew there was nothing she could do to help them, whatever those flames were, they finished whatever they touched. Chrysalis could already feel that deep utter sense of guilt swelling up inside her, she wanted to help them, every single one of them, but there was nothing she could do, she was useless. The ones who weren't hurt were just like her, running for their lives. The ones who were, said little, for very obvious reasons. They ceased to move at this point, and were spread about the ground like gruesome decorations.

Chrysalis felt an immediate sense of annoyance as when some changelings caught a glimpse of her, she immediately became their concern. Chrysalis snapped back at them in desperation, crying out to them "Don't worry about me! Worry about yourselves! I'm fine! I'll make it to the Grand Hive! Just get out of here!" Chrysalis's voice cracked with each word, tears coursing down her face. Most of the changelings were actually a bit reluctant to follow their Princess's direct orders but most understood that she wouldn't accept the help, that she wanted them to escape and that was their priority. They also wanted to take their Princess with them as they attempted to find a way past the flames and out of their burning kingdom. But Chrysalis had different plans, she wasn't going to leave without finding her mother, but by now her mother was also probably already acting upon the situation. Chrysalis didn't have time to question what the best course of action was, she simply said what she felt was necessary and then continued on her way.

As Chrysalis was trotting as fast as she could through the perishing kingdom, Chrysalis along the way ran into Old Mel'Zaraf. He was exhausted, but still alive; he glanced over at Chrysalis, who looked at him with an aspiration of hope. As they both caught each others glance, there was that intense feeling of regret coming from both of them. Chrysalis just called out to him as she hurried to his side "M-Mel'Zaraf! The city It's...It's-"

Mel'Zaraf coughed before speaking wheezily, he felt he barely had any strength to talk. The changeling looked up at the sky, the veil of black smoke shrouded their attackers, but not the attacks, they were clueless to the situation. But there was one place they could see, one place that reached into the skies far above all this, The Grand Hive. That's where Mel'Zaraf to was going, he looked over at Chrysalis with a reassuring smile. "C-Chrysalis, you're, you're okay. I'm so glad. Hurry, we must get to your mother, I believe there is a chance to stop this yet, even now, there may still be a chance." Mel'Zaraf coughed once more as tears swelled in his eyes and he looked up to the sky. "We were not fast enough Chrysalis. We didn't take all the precautions we should have, we failed to keep our race in check, and now, now it has costed us greatly. I only wish I could of foreseen something like this, but, the future is a complicated thing, It's ever changing, just like us. We were not meant to gaze beyond time itself, we are not gods, yet this, why did It have to be this?" Mel'Zaraf's words trailed off as he noticed Chrysalis was sobbing to herself, biting her lower lip as she trembled. She had her eyes closed, looking towards the ground as her tear droplets just fell. Mel'Zaraf approached her and then pulled her into him with a smile, rubbing the top of her head.

Chrysalis muttered. "Ta'lak, he, he was right there Mel'Zaraf. He was just there, everything was normal and then all this happened. P-Perhaps If I took you more seriously, perhaps If I-"

Mel'Zaraf cut her off immediately, looking her in her eyes as he shook her somewhat. "Now don't you dare start blaming yourself for what happened here Chrysalis! Whoever is doing this is to blame, they have their reasons, and none of them fall on you, don't you dare think as such. Regarding Ta'lak, I'm, I'm sorry to hear of his fate." Mel'Zaraf's brows furrowed in discomfort as he looked grief struck. "You two are so young, and it's certain to me now that the future that awaits you Chrysalis will be a perilous one. I don't need any special sort of elixir to see that. It pains my heart greatly to think of what you may have to go through. I only hope, our kind has a future after this." He then nudged the young changeling to move along, they'd dallied here long enough and the attack wasn't ceasing and the flames only worsened as time drew on. "Come now Chrysalis, we must get you to the Grand Hive, that's where your mother would be waiting."

Chrysalis nodded as she readjusted herself. The two of them then made their way further into the kingdom and towards the Grand Hive, they were close, and they'd make it if it was the last thing they'd do.

As they approached the Grand Hive, they noticed the guards were busy attempting to escort citizens through a safe path out of the kingdom. Of course some of them noticed Chrysalis and immediately rushed to her and Mel'Zaraf's aid as well. One of the guards spoke frantically "My Princess! You live! Hurry we must get you out of the kingdom on the Queen's orders, she has specifically requested us not to let you enter the Grand Hive."

Chrysalis gasped "W-What!? Where is she? Where is mom!?"

The guard shook his head. "She would not state her reasons, she simply stated that getting you and the others out of the kingdom was our top priority! To protect you all with our lives!"

Chrysalis gritted her teeth as she snarled somewhat In discern. I don't think so mom, I'm not leaving you here!

Chrysalis pushed her way past the guard as she trotted hurriedly straight into the Grand Hive. Mel'Zaraf snapped angrily at the young changeling "Chrysalis!" He proceeded by going after her, but didn't fail to regard the guard as he did so "Well don't just stand there! Help me!" Mel'Zaraf coughed as he to headed into the Grand Hive.

Some of the guards then followed in pursuit.

As Chrysalis made her way through the Grand Hive, it pained her to see the state it'd become. The once beautiful sculpted walls, the etched glass windows; all destroyed like they meant nothing. Now the place was practically lit aflame, the walls were scorching, but still there was a path to the stairway. Perhaps it was destiny opening up to her. She took it, and then made way for the stairs, a determined expression on her face. I know you'd never leave this kingdom mom. So I'm going to have to force you, I'm not letting you stay here!

As Chrysalis climbed the stairs, soon there was Mel'Zarafs familiar voice shouting at her as she did so. "Chrysalis! What do you think you're doing!? We have to get you out now, if it's your mother's direct orders; she has good reason! It's too late for us to meet up with her, do you see the condition this place is in!? Come down little one, there is not enough time!"

Chrysalis snapped back at him. "I'm not leaving her! Now you can either come with me Mel'Zaraf or you can continue to just stand there and whine! Or just go, I can do this alone!" Chrysalis then continued bolting up the stairs as Mel'Zaraf coughed heavily, wheezing. He was old; he wasn't the changeling he used to be. It's too bad they couldn't take up the youth of the things they turned into. He then began a steady climb up the stairs as he attempted to catch up to Chrysalis. He turned horrified to see the guards that were assisting him, most were caught in the flame or cut off, there was no escaping it. Mel'Zaraf then continued to climb, going up as fast as he could in his old age.

Moving on impulse, and climbing the stairs, dodging flaming debris and moving hurriedly to her destination, Chrysalis eventually made it to the top. She did a roll somewhat as she reached the top, laying on the ground soon afterwords as she was in front of her mother's chamber door. She sighed with relief staggering to her hooves as she approached the door; when suddenly she'd heard somepony else approaching from behind her. Her eyes widened as she could already guess who it was, she turned to look at him as she sighed "Mel'Zaraf I told you to-' Chrysalis paused as his condition horrified her.

Mel'Zaraf laughed somewhat as he coughed, his back half had caught on fire and the rest of his body would only continue to do so. He sighed heavily as he seemed to react painlessly to be being burned alive. Mel'Zaraf then reached into a small pouch at his side, pulling out a little vial filled with a familiar substance. He threw it over to Chrysalis "Drink it Chrysalis."

Chrysalis looked down at the vial as she shook her head, not caring for it, she then began to approach Mel'Zaraf pleadingly as she reached out a hoof; he snapped at her. "Chrysalis! It's too late for me, we both know this. Spare an old changeling the trouble and just take the vial. Drink it, it was meant for your mother but, I realize things tend to not go according to plan so, I want you to take it instead." As his body continued to burn, the flames rising and slowly engulfing him he looked at Chrysalis with caring eyes as she looked back at him, tragically. "Chrysalis, I've known you since you were first born. I've been proud to assist your mother in watching over you, and this kingdom. I'm so sorry a youngling such as yourself has to go through this. We, we should of planned better for the future; the older generation. We've failed you Chrysalis. We've failed all of you. I only wish I could take it back, please, find a way out of here, survive...I know it's much to ask but, please, don't die here." As the flames covered his body the older changeling grew limp as he muttered a final farewell. "Goodbye your highness..." And the world fell deafly silent once more, only the sound of the spreading fire accompanied the lone changeling now.

Chrysalis looked down solemnly, holding back her tears. She looked at his corpse turn to ash as she simply muttered "Goodbye Old Mel'Zaraf, I'll miss you..."

Chrysalis then picked up the vile, and opened it, chugging the substance down. She didn't question Mel'Zaraf's wishes, she would respect him in these final moments. She then trotted through the chamber doors.

Chrysalis closed her mother's chamber door behind her as she then made her way into the room, glancing around in a hurry. There was no trace of her mother, Chrysalis gritted her teeth angrily. "Comon mom! Where are you? I know you wouldn't just-" Suddenly she was cut off by the sound of mysterious laughter. It came from outside.

"Ahahahahahaa!"

Chrysalis's eyes widened as she made her way to the porch cautiously. She glanced around at first, then gasped as she looked off into the distant sky. There she was, mom, but she wasn't alone, surrounding her were three figures. She was confused; were these the things that attacked the kingdom? Chrysalis had never seen any of them before, she could only stand and watch events unfold before her.

Chrysalis's mother, the Queen of changelings, the guardian of her race, remained there, in place as her bug like wings continued to flap. She looked tired, broken, grief struck as she looked at the veil of black smoke below her. She sniffled somewhat, before shooting a intense look of discern at all three figures surrounding her. "Tell me, what will become of the rest of my subjects, will you hunt them down after I've died? Will you continue this despicable massacre?"

Celestia's expression saddened as she shook her head. "We will not be the cause of an extinction; but know this was our only option. For too long you've allowed your kind to run rampant through the land, allowing them to attack my subjects. It was time we put an end to it, permanently."

Chrysalis's mother shook her head "There are always other options."

This caused Celestia's expression to worsen as she seemed guilt ridden by what she was doing. Luna then took notice of her sister as she then looked to the queen, snarling angrily in disgust. "Tch! There aren't any for your race, perhaps If you took responsibility and kept them in order, this could of been prevented. To blame us for retaliation is absurd, you creatures are far too dangerous to be left alive, you've abused the gifts given to you. It's time you learned of consequence."

Chrysalis's mother snapped at Luna, angrily yet, pleadingly. "We were attempting to change! It was not all of us who attacked your subjects, it was not all of us who used our powers irresponsibly! Why can you not understand this? The changelings are a race capable of doing much good, but we're not fortunate enough to be able to rely on such a simple food source! We must remain vigilant, dedicated to the task, If you'd only given us more time we could have-"

Luna interrupted her "The leopard cannot change its spots."

Chrysalis's mother felt struck, her eyes widened as she then looked down solemnly.

Celestia however, seemed to want to understand where she was coming from. But at this point, it was too late for that, perhaps a chance would present itself in the future. Celestia looked to the changeling queen with a saddened expression before asking "Are you ready?"

Chrysalis's mother looked at them with grim determination before nodding simply. "Oh, how nice of you to ask...." She looked down before closing her eyes somewhat. She thought of her daughter, her precious Chrysalis; she made it out alright, didn't she? She could only hope and pray she did so. Chrysalis's mother wasn't afraid of death, but she couldn't help but weep in silence to herself. She'd failed, failed her kingdom and failed her daughter, failed her race. She failed to give them the prosperous future she wished for them. She held much regret, but, there was nothing that could change that now, the damage had already been done. She took in a deep breath as she exhaled, then her eyes shot wide as she bolted upward. It had begun, as she made her way further up, she glanced down at her three opponents who were already on the move.

Celestia shot to the left, and Luna to the right as Discord pursued the queen with a smirk. Luna called out to Celestia "Sister,  shall we gather in formation? I do believe she plans to attempt to finish us on one shot, she cannot hope to win this any other way. Shall we humor her?"

Celestia looked over to her sister before nodding simply. "Yes, call down Discord, we won't give chase, we'll give her what she wants, It's the least we could do."

Luna nodded before calling up to the Discord "Discord! Come back!"

Discord raised a brow as he looked down at Luna and Celestia, he sighed heavily before looking up at the queen who simply paused as she noticed the three of them were gathering down below.

They simply looked up at her as she did the same at them, she knew what that meant, they were offering her an honorable way out. She nodded to them before making her way further away from them, then moving downward steadily until she was at their level, evenly, quite a distance away. She remained there in the sky as her horn soon started to glow a vibrant neon green color, putting all her power into one final blast.

Celestia, Luna, and Discord were now reading an attack of their own as well. Discord started off by summoning what seemed to be a giant sphere, hard as stone, yet, sweet as chocolate. He was smirking before muttering "Now this will be quite the last hoorah wouldn't you say? She truly knows how to pick her style."

Luna couldn't help but scowl somewhat at Discord. "This isn't a game!"

Discord looked to her, amused. "All of life is a game Luna, winners, losers, that's all there is to it. That with some chaos."

Celestia then sighed heavily "Concentrate you two, we're not to underestimate her."

With that Celestia then bathed Discords sphere with scorching flames. As if she were taking the power from the very sun in order to summon forth the fire she birthed. Luna then proceeded to cover the sphere with black flames which mixed in with her sister's, dark magic, and a common form of fighting amongst the Lunar Guard. With that they were ready, they then all took a look at the Queen before nodding to her, everything was set.

The Queen gulped a bit before chuckling a little to herself. I guess this is it. She exhaled heavily before letting off her mighty blast of magic, which surged forward like a stream of green fire, straight towards Celestia and the others. She remained concentrated, if she had any shot at winning this then it would be decided now. She could feel a slight sting of regret inside her for not allowing herself to feed in recent months. She to was attempting to change, to stop feeding on her most prominent source of power. Something that would now cost her most assuredly.

Discord cackled wildly as he then crushed the sphere he'd made with a simple swipe of his claw. The sphere then morphed and fused with the Princesse's fires as it was made into something far greater than it'd previously been. Discord relished in turning something that was already meant for chaos into something more chaotic in itself. He grinned, surging the strange magical sphere forward as it made contact with the queen's neon blast. For a moment it was a simple battle of willpower. Both sides held their attacks evenly, Celestia, Discord, and Luna were amazed by the queen's ability to keep them at bay even if for a few seconds. But as this little duel drew on, reality soon sunk in as pure magical power would be the judge of who would win this. The magical sphere slowly began to overtake and push back the queen's neon blast, she irked in pain as she attempted to force it back. But the sphere made steady progress, and as the queen simply looked at it come closer and closer to her, she simply continued to attempt to hold it back, but she to knew this was already over. The sphere of magic was practically in her face now, no more than a few feet away as it seemed she was staring right into the heart of night and day. She smirked somewhat as looked down. Goodbye my precious daughter, pride and joy of my life. Goodbye Chrysalis.

With that the queen ceased her spell and as she did so Discord's sphere of magic erupted like a bomb. The pure essence of magical power engulfing anything within it's radius.

Chrysalis looked on in horror as she saw her mom's figure caught in the blast. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she screamed out in dismay. "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

As the queen was engulfed in the blast. She spread her hooves out, as if embracing her fate head on. Her eyes widened as she thought she'd heard that familiar voice, even in the midst of all this, she thought she could hear Chrysalis screaming for her. She glanced in the direction of where she thought she'd heard it, and to her joy, she saw her, her precious daughter further in the distance. At the last spot they'd spoken, she couldn't make it out to be Chrysalis exactly but she knew it was her. Even if it was for a fleeting moment, that was the greatest thing she could ask for. To see that her daughter was still alive, that there was still a chance she'd make it out, she wanted to say so much but she didn't have such a pleasure. Her life would be over in the next few seconds. A slight tear rolled down her cheek as she smiled softly in her daughter's direction I love you. And with that she was gone, turning to dust and ash in a matter of seconds, painlessly exiting this world without a second thought. The blast consuming and evaporating her whole like water. As it spread about the area, soon disappearing as the spell would eventually die down.

As the blast finally cleared, any trace of Chrysalis's mother was now gone. Chrysalis was speechless, she simply stared off into the distant sky, where her mother once had been, but now was gone, beyond her grasp for all eternity.

Discord smirked crossing his arms. "Now that, was certainly impressive, it's too bad, she could of made a powerful ally."

Luna sighed heavily "I'd rather not deal with two monsters at my side, thank you very much."

Discord cackled somewhat. "Ahahaha! I'll take that as a compliment. Now let us go down below, I wish to see what sort of chaos our little attacks have caused. I'm sure it'll be a glorious sight!" With that Discord made his way down towards the city and past the clouds of black smoke.

Luna groaned, rolling her eyes at him before following. She paused to call to her sister "Come Sister! I don't want to leave Discord out of our sight for long!"

Celestia remained in the sky for a brief moment. Still saddened as she eventually turned to descend to the ground down below as well. Disappearing alongside Luna as they'd made their way down.

Chrysalis remained on the porch as she simply stared off into the sky wide eyed. She felt like she were about to faint. She trotted forward steadily as she muttered. "Mom?" She crawled to the ledge of the porch and reached out a hoof to the sky, as If seeking for something to grab hold of it. She was at a loss for words, when suddenly as the flames were already spreading about her mother's chambers, the floor of the porch slowly cracked. Chrysalis simply continued to look at the sky, still in that same position, still in shock and denial, but the porch wasn't going to wait for her. It eventually collapsed on itself as the little changeling began a plummeting descent.

As Chrysalis fell, she seemed emotionless, broken, simply looking up, without a care for what would happen to her. She'd lost everything, her closest friends, her mother, any other changeling she knew was likely dead. In fact, now would be the perfect time to die, what was waiting for her in this cruel twisted life now? Nothing but despair. She simply fell, welcoming the idea of a swift death, perhaps she'd be able to join her mother after all. As Chrysalis fell however, things wouldn't go the way she wanted, she yelped in pain as she slammed against the edge of a small spire sticking out from the Grand Hive. It'd only continue from there, she hit another piece of the building that'd been sticking out from the destruction, breaking her fall somewhat. As she tumbled and then continued to fall, she then hit her head on a pole shaped object, proceeding into a clean descent where she finally slammed and tumbled onto a flat surface. Unconscious as she laid there. Surrounding her was basically a field of corpses, but an area not entirely consumed by flame. Another level of the Grand Hive.

This was the beginning of her new life.

With that the memory ceased. Chrysalis once more entered into a world of full black. As she'd finished observing, she seemed disinterested in anything. She simply stared at the black ground solemnly, as suddenly surrounding her were images of her mother, Ta'lak and Old Mel'Zaraf. Chrysalis looked at them, guilt ridden as she cried. "I miss you all, why, why did I have to live when you all had to die?" Soon all three figures began to turn to dust as Chrysalis couldn't help but crawl at all of them, attempting to grab them as she simply phased through all of them. They continued to turn to dust as they all smiled softly at Chrysalis, Chrysalis practically pawed at them desperately, pleading with them. "W-Wait! Don't go! Don't leave me to deal with all this, please!" Her cries fell on deaf ears as Ta'lak disappeared entirely. Followed by Old Mel'Zaraf. Chrysalis turned to her mother in desperation, who would obviously be the next, and last to go. Chrysalis looked like she'd been overwhelmed by fear, paranoia, then lunging towards her mother's figure in desperation before it to shattered as she phased through it, disappearing forever.

Chrysalis remained in place, alone in this black world as soon she simply gritted her teeth. Fury slowly overtaking her as burst into hoarse cries, screaming violently. She slammed her two front hooves on the seemingly invisible ground which was black like the rest of this dark forsaken place she was in. She teared at her mane before erupted into a violent piercing cry.

The world around her shattered, as she was once more in a realm of pure white.

Chrysalis couldn't help but notice she was back with her darker self, and her "former" self. The kind, gentle, foolish Chrysalis who'd forgotten all her beliefs, and what it truly meant to be a changeling. Her darker self remained quiet as Chrysalis simply scowled at her kinder half, who'd still had that gentle, vulnerable expression. Her piercing gaze was set on her in intense discern, as if waiting for her to spout her nonsense.

Chrysalis's former self then spoke, in a gentle tone. "Remember what mother said, there are always other options. We can still live peacefully with the ponies, we can still form a society of love and harmony."

Chrysalis winced somewhat, before smirking, then chuckling, then bursting into maniacal laughter.

"Aha...ahaha...AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

She couldn't stop laughing at how idiotic that sounded to her at this point. She continued to laugh for a brief moment before silencing herself. She looked down at her hoof as she spoke in a calm demeanor. "Mother meant well but she was short-sighted, I see that now. No; there is only this single path we must take. Hmhm, not that I'd prefer it any other way." She shot a sinister glance with a psychotic smile towards her former self, grinning somewhat. "No longer will we shackle the powers of the changelings. No longer will we force our kind into submission, into being something we're not. We are the rightful rulers of this world, lesser races will do their best to understand that. No, I can see clearly now. Hmhmhm; and It's beautiful, no longer will I be deceived. I will succeed where mother couldn't, and ensure a prosperous future for the changelings." Chrysalis looked at both her halves before smiling. "But there must always be balance, I understand I cannot do this solely with such intentions. No, I must have both of you guide me along the way, everything must have an opposite. But I will go about this the right way, and where better than to start with the fall of this pathetic kingdom filled with love and weaklings. I'm finally ready, I've awakened."

As Chrysalis finally came to in the present. It seemed only mere seconds had passed since she blacked out in the first place. She couldn't help but chuckle, the mind worked in such fortunate ways it seemed. Chrysalis exhaled deeply as upon her return to reality, she felt she'd erupted with power and realization. Green magical essence flowed from her very being as she was glancing up for a few seconds before glancing back down at the crowd, who simply looked up at her, frightened. They seemed so very scared, It was a beautiful sight. Chrysalis's appearance changed somewhat as upon her return, her powers allowed her to draw up love from all her delicious victims. She even drew in the love from her own subject, something often looked down upon in changeling society but, he wouldn't mind. Chrysalis had finally awoke from this foalish dream, and emerged as something far greater, far more powerful than she ever realized. She would be the herald of a new age for changelings, the age of prosperity, no matter how long it took she would show the world that the changelings are to be feared, and nothing less. Such memories of her life here in Canterlot seemed like a joke, to think she'd actually lived amongst these creatures, feeling the need to fight for equality. Feeling ashamed that she was a changeling. Even making friends with one. It all disgusted her, how could she have allowed herself to stoop so low, but she'd fix that all right now. It would all start with Canterlot, and she couldn't wait to get started.

As Chrysalis spoke out, her voice had also changed. It was as if two voices were synced; and her pitch had grown slightly deeper, more matured. And one could notice a significant difference in her size upon finally feeding on the source of food and power she'd denied herself for so long. She tore off her dress. She felt better than she ever did in her entire life. "My precious subjects! It is true! I've returned, forgive me for my lengthy absence but you see, I have learned much about pony society in my stay here. Something important I have learned is that, what matters to these Princesses here most is their own. So you know why that's absolutely perfect? They simply cannot fight back in such conditions, now go! GO MY CHANGELINGS! WREAK HAVOC UPON THE RACE THAT HAS TAKEN EVERYTHING FROM US!" Chrysalis stood on her hind legs as she raised her fore ones to the air, cackling maniacally. As the changelings looked upon this mighty figure, this queen who'd they'd believed was dead, suddenly an overwhelming sense of victory, of anything was possible, overwhelmed them. They cheered alongside their newfound queen, not caring for her reasons and not judging her, they finally had a true leader once again. They didn't even bother to hide their true forms at this point. They all cast away their disguises and began attacking almost immediately. They cheered in unison "FOR THE QUEEN! FOR THE CHANGELINGS!"

As chaos erupted and all the ponies were being overtaken in the panic. Celestia and Luna were still in shock from the entire situation. What had just happened? Who was this new Chrysalis who'd just appeared in a fleeting moment? Who had seemingly set them up for years and unleashed her changeling army upon them at this precise moment. Celestia just simply stared at Chrysalis, lost, unaware of what to do as Chrysalis smirked at Celestia. "Oh; and you, don't think I forgot about you my darling teacher. We're just getting started." Chrysalis's horn suddenly began to glow a vibrant green as Celestia's eyes shot wide.

Luna yelled up at her in desperation "SISTER! MOVE!!!!"

Chrysalis chuckled sinisterly. "Surprised Celestia? Yes, the playing field has changed greatly. Let's have some fun shall we?"

From outside the gates of Canterlot, Bravemane and Ellie were rapidly closing in on the city. They were covered in the blood of their enemies, as their numbers had also dwindled greatly. There was only a few of them left and as they noticed the massive amount of enemies still pursuing them, they were only more horrified to find that the city was under attack on the inside as well. What was everypony doing? Why weren't the Princesses rushing to its defense, were they more occupied with the Gala, a simple ball over the sake of their city? No, something was terribly wrong, something else was distracting them, something that required their full attention.

Ellie was breathing heavily as her and Bravemane continued to cut down and eliminate some of the supposedly controlled animals attacking them. As they pushed through the gates they noticed this seemingly endless horde had started to consist of ponies, ponies gathered from around Equestria, what was this madness they were facing? Bravemane called out to Ellie "You alright Brightmare!?"

Ellie smiled somewhat, she was exhausted but nodded anyway. "Yea, I'm fine-" Suddenly a timberwolf lunged at her as she dodged it, spinning and then swinging down a blade atop of it. The wolf yelped before shattering into pieces of wood. "-Think you can keep up?"

Bravemane rolled his eyes. "Of course!"

Suddenly as the gates burst open, waves of enemies poured forth, eager to engage them in battle. Bravemane yelled out "Here comes some more!"

When suddenly the enemies were swooped away, getting flung a great distance to the side and hurtling through the air. Nearly all the remaining ponies of the Celestial Watch's eyes widened as they then looked ahead. Having eliminated the enemy almost effortlessly were two prominent members of the Lunar Guard. Actually they were more than that, they were the leaders of the Lunar Guard. One of two regarded Bravemane with a look of disinterest "Bravemane, glad to see you could make It."

Bravemane never liked this fellow, even though he did just help him out, he always had a bad feeling about this one. His name was Sombra, a unicorn who always seemed to keep to himself, and never speak of his intentions. He was a prodigy amongst the Lunar Guard, and one who supposedly mastered dark magic in a very short period of time. He was one of Luna's favorites apparently, because he always got the job done of course. He was a master of offensive magic, as well as a skilled fighter. Sombra came off as one who'd do anything for power, one who had much larger plans for the future besides being the leader of the lunar guards. But that was a story for another time. Bravemane then regarded the second, this one was truly peculiar. He was but a colt, a unicorn who bore a white mane and cobalt blue coat. He didn't come off as anything special at first glance but, Luna wouldn't have picked him otherwise. Bravemane sighed heavily "Sombra, Eden, glad to see you two could lend a hoof. What's going on in there, what's the condition of the city?"

Sombra nudged in the direction of the remaining Celestial Watch before sighing heavily. Signaling them to follow him and the lunar guard into the city. "It's chaotic, but apparently their not attacking the castle yet. For what reason, I'm not entirely sure but either way, they're blocking our pathway, we could use a hoof."

Suddenly the colt Eden bounced a bit. "As you can see we haven't gotten hurt once. I'm pretty good at shield spells you know, get in any trouble, and I'll be there on the double. No need to do anything, you can all depend on me."

Ellie winced at the colt, annoyed. What a cocky little punk. How laughable, that a simple colt made it into the Lunar Guard. Based off what, natural talent? It was a joke, and one Ellie didn't find too funny.

But now wasn't the time for casual conversation. The rest of both the Lunar Guard and the Celestial Watch were gathered near the gates, the mission, push through to the castle. They shot each other determined glances before then making their way deeper into the city. When suddenly an explosion erupted at the castle grounds. Something everypony could see, all their eyes widened as they didn't know what to make of it. A blast tore off nearly the entire corner of the left side of the castle. A green beam trailed off into the sky.

Bravemane screamed "What the buck was that!?"

Sombra seemed quite interested in it as he simply looked up, somewhat humored. "Interesting."

Eden blinked a bit as he raised a brow. "That doesn't look too good..."

Ellie's nose wrinkled a bit, irked by the colt still. "Well duh! I mean, look at it! What are you all standing around for, we have to hurry to the castle! Let's go! We're obviously short on time!"

With that all of them began to trot as quickly as they could through the ruined streets of Canterlot, making their way to the castle and hopefully assist in the situation. Meeting much resistance along the way of course.

As Chrysalis let off a blast that ripped through the castle walls like paper. Celestia was hurled into the air, at the endpoint of the stream of magic as she'd casted a defensive spell in the last second. But even that wasn't enough to shield her entirely from the damage. She paced heavily as she noticed she was wounded, and smoke was emitting from her coat due to the aftermath. She flapped her wings as she looked down at the gaping hole that now was in her castle. Her expression worsened as she gritted her teeth angrily, frustrated as suddenly joining her in the skies was Chrysalis. Chrysalis had no trouble flying with her buglike wings now. She wore an amused expression, delighted to see Celestia pissed off.

"Why, what's wrong Celestia? I thought you enjoyed these types of things. Come, I want to enjoy this."

Celestia snarled angrily at the newly awakened changeling queen as she shot forward with all her might. "You dare attack my city, my subjects!? After I trusted you, nurtured you, took care of you for all these years!? You seek the wrath of the sun? You shall have it! And you shall burn for this betrayal Chrysalis!" Chrysalis simply smirked as a booming sound echoed as they made contact with one another.

Meanwhile in the castle, Luna wanted to assist her sister. But she was quite occupied with the changeling invasion going on in the very room of the Gala. She couldn't outright destroy everything or she'd kill all the ponies along with the changelings. Why wasn't her guard in here assisting her? She gritted her teeth infuriated just as much as Celestia was. And she was annoyed by the fact she actually felt hurt by Chrysalis's betrayal, it irked her greatly. But she didn't have time to think, she had to hurry and attempt to do what she could about the situation.

Little did any of them know, that soon, everything would come to a close. Still he was scheming, observing from the shadows. Everything was going according to plan, and Chrysalis's unexpected betrayal only helped progress things easier. He cackled as it was about time he made his way to the scene. The closing act had finally begun. Next Chapter: Chapter 10: Chaos - Part 1 Estimated time remaining: 1 Hour, 4 Minutes
