Part 3
It was a long walk back to town. All of my friends were talking and having a good time with the Mane Six. I was perfectly happy watching them be happy, so I didn't really talk. I only heard bits and pieces of conversation. From what I could tell, they were asking pretty obvious questions. “What do you do for a living.” “What are other ponies like in town.” I was thankful that they were just smart enough to know that they shouldn't show that they knew pretty much all of the answers to the questions they were asking.
As we walked on, I realized that only two ponies who weren't talking. Me and Twilight. Twilight was walking forward with her head bent slightly down, as if thinking intently. Trying to be friendly, and to spur up a conversation, I trotted up next to her. I kept walking next to her for about two minutes, hoping that she would be the one to start the talking. She acted like she didn’t even notice me.
“So...” I said with slightly nervous tone. “Any good libraries in the town?” I could see her ears and eyes perk up, but she didn’t respond. “I love reading.” I went on, not lying for a change. “I’ve read about 30 books last summer.” I was trying to get her to talk, but she was clearly not interested. “Oh, come on. You look like a well pony who enjoys the luxury of books.” I said hoping that she didn’t get suspicious of my foreknowledge of her like for books.
“I’m the town’s librarian.” She said flatly with no emotion. I felt like I had to try to keep the conversation going, or she would never even like me and my group.
“Really?” I said trying to sound somewhat surprised. “I’m sure then you must have read some interesting books then.” I went on hoping that she would jump into the conversation. “My favorite genre is action and adventure. You know, like....” I stopped realizing that I didn’t know any books from this universe. She looked up at me for once like she was genuinely interested in my answer. Possibly because she might have thought she caught me in a lie.
“Like...” I continued to stall. I finally just took a shot in the dark. “Like Band of Colts.” I said mixing the HBO TV Series Band of Brothers with ponies. I got extremely lucky.
“I heard about that one.” Twilight said just as flatly as before. “I ordered it for the library about a week ago.” She still wouldn't make eye contact.
“What’s your favorite genre?” I asked hoping that she would show at least some emotion. She just walked there for a while, seemingly pawning her thoughts.
“I like mysteries.” She said with just a hint of enthusiasm in her voice. “Like the Detective Barn stories.”
“Oh, I haven’t read those yet.” I said with a smile. “What’s it about?” I said trying to prolong the conversation. Now she finally looked at me.
“You haven’t read one of the most classic mysteries of all time?” She asked. But she asked me this question in a different way. It wasn’t accusing, it wasn’t suspicious. It was... almost friendly.
“I’m more into recently published stories.” I replied.
“Well,” she started, “it’s a true story all about Detective Barn, as I assume you would’ve guessed, who is about to find the most notorious serial killer of the time, Hayblood Pie.” I looked at Twilight for a second in confusion. I slowly turned to Pinkie Pie, who was talking to Zack (or I guess I should start calling him Soap...) about how she got her job at Sugar Cube Corner.
“Umm.... Did you say Hayblood PIE?” I asked Twilight while quickly nudging my head towards Pinkie.
“Oh, no. No, no.” She said with a slight giggle. “Pinkie’s family has done multiple historic checks. There’s no relation.” Even though I believed her, it brought the story Cupcakes to my mind. But laughed at the idea of Pinkie Pie being a murderer.
“What?” Twilight asked making me realize that I laughed out loud.
“Oh nothing, just something a friend once wrote to me.” I said being forced to lie again. But Twilight didn’t get suspicious, or at least didn’t show it.
“Anyways, Detective Barn just found a major clue to where Hayblood is and whom he is planning on killing next, when he receives a letter from non other than Hayblood himself. He must clear evidence, misdirect the investigation, and eventually frame somepony from his own unit or else Hayblood threatens to kill Detective Barn's family. And... well I don’t want to give anything away.” She said smiling again. “I have tons of copies at the library if you want to read them.”
“Sounds great!” I said being really interested by the story.
“Hey!” A voice shouted from somewhere in the herd of ponies. “My farm’s not very far from here. We can go there and catch some grub before we head on into town.” Applejack said.
Now, I’m going to be honest here. Ever since I started to watch My Little Pony, I’ve eaten a ton more apples, solely because of Applejack. Everypony in the group seemed to nod and grumble with agreement. I hadn’t realized it before due to all the excitement, but I was actually starving. And by looking at my friends, I could guess they were too.
It was only a five minute walk from where we were to Sweet Apple Acres. I’m not sure if it was because they never showed the whole farm in one scene, or if it was because I was seeing it with my own two eyes but, Sweet Apple Acres was extremely huge. And I mean EXTREMELY. I couldn’t believe that the seemingly quiet farm from the television show was so small in comparison.
“You city boys never seen an apple orchard before?” AJ said with a laugh.
“Never one so big...” Mike said in awe.
“Well, the house is over that away.” AJ said pointing.
We all trotted up to her house when we saw Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle kicking around a soccer ball and laughing aimlessly. Scootaloo saw us first.
“Hey Rainbow Dash!” She yelled excitedly and immediately ran up towards us with her wings flapping as hard as they could.
“Hey AJ.” Apple Bloom said causally.
“Hi Sis.” Sweetie Belle said just as causally.
Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle walked up to us slowly while Scootaloo was already right in front of Rainbow Dash.
“Hey Rainbow!” Scootaloo said not even noticing us. “Are you ready to show me those super cool moves you said you first learned!?”
“HeHe, sorry kid, I’ll have to do that some other time. We just found these guys in the Colt Plains.” RD said gesturing at us. “They don’t really remember much.”
By now the other two Cutie Mark Crusaders had caught up to Scootaloo and had heard what RD had said. The three looked at us with confusion in their faces.
“What do you mean they don’t remember much?” Apple Bloom said puzzled.
“Well, it seems that they don’t recall how they got there, and much of anything else.” Rarity stated.
“Why?” Scootaloo pressed.
“Your guess is as good as mine.” Twilight said giving the six of us a side glance.
“Well nice to meet you all!” Apple Bloom said just as friendly as her big sister. “My names Apple Bloom.” The other two fillies unnecessarily introduced themselves too.
“Hey sugarcube,” Applejack said to Apple Bloom, “does Granny Smith have any apple pies baked right now?” Applejack said returning us to the fact that we were starving.
“She sure does!” Apple Bloom replied with a big, toothy grin. “I counted at least 15 pies in there.” She said gesturing over at the house.
“That should be more than enough for all of us.” AJ said talking to everypony. “You girls want some too?” The Cutie Mark Crusaders all nodded in agreement.
The 15 of us walked up to the house with the Mane Six in the front and the rest of us hanging back.
“So what’s all your names?” Sweetie Belle asked the six of us with a cute smile.
We all introduced ourselves with surprising ease. I mean, we just came up with our names not an hour ago, and we seemed pretty accustomed to our new names already. We walked into the house with the welcoming smell of all things apples. It smelled wonderful.
“Would you boys like some ice cream with your pie?” Rarity said holding the ice cream and the ice cream spoon with her magic.
After an hour or so, all of the pies had been eaten, and all of the ice cream either melted, or eaten too. It felt good to have a stomach full of delicious food. All I could help to do was to stay awake. Pretty much everypony else in the room felt the same way I did. Josh was the one to brake the silence.
“That. Was. Beyond delicious.” He said licking the melted ice cream off his spoon.
“Well, there’s a reason why Granny Smith has an apple pie cutie mark.” AJ said starting to put dishes in the sink. I saw Josh rise from his seat at the table.
“Here, let me help you with that.” He said beginning to try to take the plates from Applejack’s hooves.
“Naahhh...” AJ said politely. “You’re all guests here, I’ve got these.” With that, the rest of the colts in the room rose up and began to take dishes off the table. Applejack was surprised by this, and didn’t notice Josh slip the dishes away from her grasp.
“Exactly,” Josh said smiling “you’re the hostess, and we should help clean up.”
Apple Bloom told Applejack that she and her friends were going back outside to play some more ball. After they left, it was only the six mares and six colts in the room all sitting lazily at the table or on chairs in the living room. Rarity, of course, was the one to break the tranquillity.
“Oh my! Look at the time! I didn’t realize it was so late!” She quickly scooted to the door and opened it. “Sweetie Belle!” she yelled a little too loud. “I’ve got to bring you back to mother’s house!” In front of her her I saw the setting sun and realized that it must have been pretty late by now. I even realized that the meal we just ate was more like dinner than lunch.
“I simply must be going.” Rarity said turning back to us. “I’ve still got to get my sister home before I can get some much needed beauty sleep from being out in the sun all day.” She said tossing her mane behind her head.
“I suppose I should be going too.” Twilight said rising to all fours.
“But what about you guys?” Pinkie said to us. “Where are you going to sleep?” She asked with genuine concern in her voice.
“Well, if you fellers don’t mind, you could easily sleep in the barn. There’s a lot of room and a lot of soft hay.” Applejack said rising from her seat as well.
“Sleep,” Carl said lazily, “that sounds wonderful...” he said dreamily.
“Well then it’s settled.” Rainbow Dash said assertively. “You guys can stay here tonight, and starting tomorrow, we’ll all help you guys try and find a place to live.”
“Sounds fine by me.” Justin said, his eyes starting to seriously droop.
“Alright then. I’ll bring out some pillows and blankets for you guys.” Applejack said starting towards the door. “Apple Bloom! Time to come in!” She yelled.
“Well, it was very nice meeting you all.” Twilight said more or less looking directly at me. “I’m sure, we’ll find something that will be suitable for you all tomorrow.”
“And I’ll make sure to bring lots of cake for snacks tomorrow!” Yelled Pinkie Pie hopping in front of Twilight.
We all said our goodbyes and thanks as the five ponies left. AJ led us to the barn and, as promised, brought out pillows and blankets for us. We all expressed our gratitude as she left and closed the barn door.
“Wow.” Carl was the first to say. “Just... wow.”
“What a day.” Justin said letting out a deep sigh. He chuckled and said, “Best day of my life. Period.”
We all mumbled some sort of agreement, but all too tired to actually form any more sentences. I was really tired, but I couldn't stop thinking about the whole day and the fact that we were still here, in Equestria, as ponies. And that we just ate dinner with the Mane Six. As sleep slowly coaxed it’s way into my brain, I prayed with all my might, that when I woke up tomorrow, I would still be here.
