Chapter 1

“Mommy, mommy look I did it!” an ecstatic grey filly ran up to her mother bouncing up and down. “I did it, I baked my first muffin.”

An older mare turned to see the small unicorn holding a plate with a single muffin, burnt to a crisp. “Oh, good… job Dinky… ah, what flavor is it?”

“It’s strawberry, are you gonna taste it mommy?” her face now lowered.

The older mare hesitated “of course I will.” The mare leaned down to the plate and took a bite out of the burnt muffin. “Its… good,” the mare uttered trying not to vomit.

The filly’s eyes lit up “REALLY, does that mean I get my cutie mark?”

“No sweetie,” her mother chuckled. “Come lay down muffin.”

“It’s not fair all of my friends have their cutie marks, I’m never gonna get mine.” Dinky cried laying her head in her hooves.

“Sweetie that’s not true I’m sure you’ll get your cutie mark very soon.”  The mother said as she placed a hoof on her daughter’s blonde mane.

Dinky jumped up and bolt to her room.

“Sweetie, Muffin?” her mother stepped into the room and sat next to her bed.

“Leave me alone.” Dinky sobbed.

The mother closed her eyes and sung softly “oh do you know the Muffin Mare, the Muffin Mare, the Muffin Mare.” She opened one of her eyes only to see her daughter shift slightly. “Oh do you know the Muffin Mare who lives on Horseshoe Lane.” The mother sighed seeing her daughter’s position unchanged, and began to walk away.

Oh yes I know the Muffin Mare, the Muffin Mare, the Muffin Mare.”  Dinky sung quietly through broken tears.

Her mother walked back up her daughter placing a hoof on her.

Oh yes I know Muffin Mare and her name is Dinky Hooves,” both now singing in unison and giggling.

“I love you mommy.”

“I love you too sweetie,” the mother said poking her daughters belly.

“Stop,” Dinky giggled.

“Oh… does that tickle?” the mother grinned and began poking the filly’s belly more.

“Stop ha-ha stop, yes it tickles” begged Dinky.

The mother continued tickling her daughter, “oh I don’t think so you can’t stop what’s-”

There was a loud crash from the living room followed by several voices.

“Check every room, I want them found alive,” Yelled one of the voices.

“Mommy, what’s happening?” questioned the filly.

The mother panicked “I… I don’t know, quick sweetie go hide in the closet.”

Dinky bolted to the closet closing it behind her.

“I found her, the mothers in here,” a black stallion stepped into the room. “Where is your daughter?”

The mother tried to avert her eyes from the closet but it was too late.

“The closet, she’s in the closet.” The black stallion yelled as he opened the door to see a terrified filly.

“No leave my daughter alone,” screamed the mother as two more stallions came in to the room and pinned her down.

A taller stallion stepped into the room, his fur pale and he had no mane or tail, the mother’s poor vision made it seem as if he had no visible face, he wore a sleek black suit and fashioned a crimson red tie.

“Miss Derpy Hooves under order of Princess Celestia, your daughter is to be taken into custody by filly services,” said the pale stallion.

“No,” Derpy screamed. With all her might she shoved the two stallions off of her and bolted out the door, several other ponies attempted to grab her but she only pushed past them.

“For Celestia’s sake will somepony stop her,” yelled the pale stallion.

Derpy ignored the pale one and continued to the door, each step she took seem to last forever. The door was in sight, as she exited the house she was stopped by a pair of hooves smashing into her face.  She looked in every direction searching for the pony that had bucked her before collapsing. She reached out towards her daughter as her vision faded to black.

      ------

“DINKY” Derpy screamed as she jolted awake. “Dinky, where are you?”

Derpy tried to wipe the tears from her face but was unable to move, “huh, what’s going on, where am I?”

The grey mare’s eyes looked around the room, “huh, oh right.” she squinted her eyes, revealing the horrors of her location. The room was dark, lit only by a single lantern. The floors of the room were a faded blue tile pattern, caked with blood and other fluids. The walls held various diagrams depicting pony anatomy as well as several cutie marks nailed to it.

“Help,” Derpy yelled as she frantically attempted to move. “Why can’t I…” she looked down to see she was on top of a gurney, all four of her hooves were tied down tightly.

Her breathing became more frantic, her eyes darted back and forth spotting various tools of surgery. “No… oh no, no, no” she began to shake the gurney as she pulled and tugged at her bindings. She gave one final tug and the entire gurney flipped to its side loosening one of her straps, she quickly unstrapped her other hooves and stood up.

‘What is this place,’ she thought to herself as she picked up the lantern. ‘Am I in a hospital, was I in an accident. Oh I hope Dinky is alright, I gotta find her.’

Derpy opened the door revealing a long corridor lined with several doors on each side. The hallway itself appeared to be in disrepair; wallpaper peeled at almost every inch, ceiling panels were either on the floor or close to falling, papers and overturned gurneys littered the ground.

Derpy heard a soft humming coming from the door at the end of the hallway. “H…hello, Dinky is that you sweetie?”  She heard no verbal reply only a giggle. Her ears immediately shot up as she charged to the door.

The mare stared at the door; it had white padding covering it and a small peephole covered by a metal slider, the number 303 was above it.

Derpy placed down the lantern and whispered, “Dinky?” another giggle. Derpy quickly opened the window hatch to see a small grey unicorn colouring. “Oh Dinky mommy was so worried, are you alright?”

The filly didn’t respond only continued to colour.

“Don’t… don’t worry mommy will get you out of there.” Derpy looked over the door quickly spotting a key hole and a note taped below it:

Ignorance Is Bliss

Derpy stared at the note in confusion then flipped it over:

Nurse Velvet, Doctor Ironbuck told me to inform you of the new keys storage room. I’m running late for a dinner party, but I know you love visiting your patients so I’m sure you’ll get this note. The keys have been moved to the old gurney storage room in B Wing.

Derpy picked up her lantern and looked around just two doors from her position was another hallway with a sign reading ‘To B Wing’ “I gotta hurry up.” Derpy attempted to open her wings but quickly realized she was unable to. “What?”

Derpy turn her attention to where her wings were to see they were bound and locked by a straightjacket ‘great another key I have to find.’

Derpy ran through the destroyed halls turning at each sign she came to. She finally hit another corridor, she squinted her eyes revealing a sign that read ‘B Wing’ “Finally.”

Derpy made her way to one of the doors and attempted to open it. “Locked,” she huffed before moving to the others. “Locked, locked, locked,” she said in frustration.  She walked to the last door and closed her eyes.  ‘Click’ Derpy jumped in delight and threw open the door.

The room was small and cluttered with envelopes and folders; at the very back was a large panel that had many key hooks with room number labels under them.

Derpy walked up to the panel seeing only one key with 303 etched into it. “Don’t worry Dinky I’m coming” she grabbed the key and wasted no time heading back to her daughter.

“Dinky mommy’s back,” she stated in excitement as she looked through the peephole, her daughter was still colouring.

Derpy carefully slid the key into the hole and turned it, when she opened the door her excitement vanished. “Dinky, Dinky where… what?” Derpy snapped her head side to side looking around the small padded room, but her daughter was nowhere to be found only a picture.
