Prologue

His name was Lucky Eight. He served in the Royal Guard and he had the best luck a pony could have.

Though he wasn't lucky as a child, in one occasion, while flying to the west, he stumbled on a dragon. He had to run and hide to save himself from the angry monster. He is not the fastest flier, nor the most maneuverable one. He had to fly low in the the woods and hide somewhere the dragon couldn't catch him. For straight 10 minutes the fierce beast chased him. The pony could hear the loud breathing right behind him.

The dragon was closing and only small distance divided them. In his short life he had never flown so fast but he started to feel really tired. He gave everything he got but it wasn't enough. The Dragon was almost on top of him and he could almost see the big sharp teeth. Then he said to himself: "If I'm gonna be a dragon food, at least I'm going to be his worst!"

He swiftly turned around. Luckily he got into the mouth of the dragon without injuring himself by the big teeth, then with full speed he crashed into the smooth wall, bounced from it and crashing in a small tooth, which somehow he broke without a scratch. The big dragon stop for a moment, made a strange face and then furiously roared, thus spitting the tooth and the pony.

The little pony had closed his eyes, so he didn't know what happened. He thought he was done for in the belly of the dragon and this is how he was digested. But he was wrong. Lucky flew a long distance from the dragon and luckily for him he was not noticed by the beast. Even more luck he had, when he landed on a soft halm, thus not injuring at all. When finally the pony opened his eyes and the first thing he saw was his first cutie mark. He felt such joy that he almost forgot the life or death chase. With this, his quest to find his true self ended and finally Lucky could go home.

His parents overjoyed, when they saw their filly in front of the house door.

"Don't cry, mom." he said with a lovely voice."I have my cutie mark!"

"Why you left us? You got us so worried and your father was about to call the Royal Guards for help." his mother hugged him. Her eyes were getting wet from happiness and she tried not to cry.

Lucky Eight looked at his father.

"Please forgive me. I didn't mean to worry you."

His father smiled.

"Ha, I was like you in your age. One time I scared my parents to death, when I disappeared for a long time."

"Does that mean you forgive me?" the filly asked.

"Of course! But for one thing."

"Thanks, dad. I will never run away again!" the filly playfully jumped at his father, knocking him on the ground. Lucky Eight fell on his dad's belly and they both laughed.

"Haha, don't you want to hear the thing?" his father asked. The filly looked at him with his two big blue eyes, impatiently waiting to hear what his father was about to say. "I'm going to the Royal Guard's office this afternoon and I'm going to enlist you to become a Guardian like me."

Then Lucky Eight's eyes became bigger and his smile longer.

"Can I come with you when you train and when you have to guard the Princess's throne room and..."

"Of course, my son. But you'll have to be prepared and trained first and i assure you it will not be easy." the father stroked his son's head.

That was the moment, when Lucky Eight's fate was decided.
