Romper and Jupiter
Chapter 1: Starlight's Request
Romper, a red, teenage Pegasus surveyed the sky. Although it was supposed to be a bright, sunny summer’s day the sky was littered with clouds, all herded there by his friends.
“Ok now Romper. Here’s your chance to clear the skies for real. Are you ready?” Graphite exclaimed.
Romper appeared calm and collected on the outside; however, on the inside he was incredibly nervous. He was known as a failure: The only Pegasus who couldn’t fly well. Instead of practicing in the sky, he would normally be on the ground socialising with the flightless ponies. There was something about them that gave Romper a feeling of home and comfort. He would often hide his wings to closely resemble the sides an earth pony, but they couldn’t stay hidden forever. Knowing this, he put off looking for a fillyfriend and decided to focus on other things, for example, a record that his friend Starlight suggested for him to break. She was the most beautiful pony that any Pegasus had ever seen, making the two princesses look like mules. She had a white coat that glowed in the light of the sun and a dark red mane that seemed to maintain its shape regardless of how fast she flew but this didn’t change the fact that Romper preferred earth ponies.
“Don’t stuff this up Romper! This is your only shot. If you fail…” Graphite gripped onto Romper’s shoulder nervously. “If you fail, don’t expect anything else like this to happen anytime soon. You got that?”
Romper nodded. He scanned the crowd that had gathered and tried to locate Skylight’s face. She was there, cheering for him. This was it. No turning back now! Romper turned to face his assistant.
“Let’s go!”
Romper took a running start and leaped into the air. His jitteriness almost got the better of him and he almost forgot how to flap his wings, but he quickly recovered and sped to his first target. He flew like a bullet and obliterated the first five clouds. Romper counted down the targets as he went. Ten… Nine… Eight… He lost track of where Skylight was standing. Seven… Six… Five… He was certain that she was in the crowd. She must had moved from her last position. Where was she? Romper picked up the pace. Four… Three… Two… And that’s when his eyes were blessed with locking with the eyes of the most beautiful pony in all of Equestria. She was a bright pink unicorn with a ruby red mane that was so smooth and well looked after, it appeared to glide down the back of her head as if it were a wonderful waterfall of scarlet. She nodded her head. Romper nodded back. This made her smile and she got up and began to cheer louder.
“Just one more, Romper. You can do this.” he whispered to himself. He shot towards the last cloud. He was going fast. He was going super-fast. His eyes began to water as his speed steadily increased. Was he going to do it? Before he knew it, BAM! He created a Sonic Rainboom just as he hit that last cloud. It was more like a Sonic Red-boom, seeing as that was the colour that exploded into the sky, littering everywhere with a thick, coral fog. Graphite was speechless. The whole crowd was speechless. Heck, even Romper was speechless.
The crowd soon dispersed until only Romper and the mysterious unicorn were left in the bleachers.
Romper cleared his throat. “Thank you… I mean, for the applause… I mean, for everything… Uh… What I’m really trying to say is… Nah… You’re a unicorn and I’m a Pegasus… It probably won’t work…”
The pink Unicorn giggled. “If what you’re implying is going out with me, then it probably won’t work.” She noticed Romper’s disappointment. “But that doesn’t mean that we can’t give it a chance. My name is Jupiter by the way, Jupiter Star. I’ll see you tomorrow at SugarCube Corner. Meet me there at about two o’clock.” Jupiter finished off by giving Romper a peck on the cheek and a goodbye hug.
Romper found himself counting down every second until he would meet Jupiter again. The red mist that had yet to subside was a constant reminder of how they had met. Thank god he was in a family where sonic booms were hereditary.
