Chapter 1: The Sleepover & Telling Her
The sun shone faintly through the gray cloud blanket over the Equestrian skies; it was a chilly winter day. As is to be expected the fillies were playing in the snow, even some of the grown up ponies indulged themselves in a little fun. Though everypony enjoys playing in the crisp snow of a fine Equestrian winter, some ponies find themselves too busy to take the time out of their schedule to do so.
Rarity was laboring over her sewing machine as usual. putting intense effort into every stitch, guiding the fabric through the mechanism, slowly bringing about a new creation. She was making a dress for herself for the upcoming fashion show, of course, Rarity entered in a heartbeat. Now she was intent to win, she was bent over her work now, stitching it together, it was her way of expressing herself, the art of the dress! Being so focused Rarity did not notice the weather taking turns for the worse.
The wind began to pick up, and the snowfall started to come down heavier. One by one the ponies sought shelter; and the streets were empty once more. Or at least they would be if it were not for one pony braving the storm. Applejack had been buying supplies for clearing the snow off her plot. She wouldn’t be able to make it to Sweet Apple Acres for a while, the storm was getting to intense. She spotted the Carousel Boutique through the curtain of snow and galloped toward the Carousel Boutique, also known as Rarity’s house. She opened the door quickly and entered shutting the door behind her. Rarity looked startled, but quickly regained her posture and smiled at her friend.
“Hey uh, Rarity, The snowstorm’s making it impossible to go back to the farm, gon’ last for a day. I was just wondering if I could uh, spend the night here?” asked Applejack. She hoofed at the floor of the shop, feeling a bit embarrassed. She wasn’t the pony to ask for favors, especially not from ponies that deemed themselves at a higher standing than her.
“But of course darling!” Rarity got up from the sewing machine, glad to see a friendly face in her shop. “I have some guests over as well, why don’t you sit down with them? I’ll go get some refreshments” Rarity trotted downstairs and headed to the kitchen, leaving Applejack to venture into the living room by herself.
She saw Coffee Shine conversing towards the Carousel Boutique.
“Thanks for bringing the cocoa!”
Feeling nervous, Rarity was thinking about breaking the news to Applejack, and about how she really felt about her. But, she was also afraid that their friendship would break apart if she told her that she loved her.
Meanwhile, the other ponies were busy doing other things. Rainbow Dash was doing some exercises in her home , Twilight was studying, Dusk Twirl was at a concert, Fluttershy was taking care of the animals, Pinkie Pie was baking up some cupcakes for the Cake’s toddlers.
Rarity soon got the guest room ready for Applejack, and Sweetie Belle was excited that Applejack was spending the night. Instead of sleeping in the same room with Rarity, Sweetie Belle decided to move her bed into the guest room for a day.
“Applejack, you are always such a good friend,” Rarity started, “I can’t thank you enough for all the help you have given me when I was in need.” They talked at length about the many times that the two had helped each other, from Twilight’s sleep over to the Sisterhooves Social. After much discussing, Rarity gave Applejack a token of her gratitude. Rarity presented her compatriot with a brand new cloak. It was a shade of brown that matched her stetson, the inside was lined with wool , making it not only functional, but also beautiful.
“Why, thanks a lot, Rarity!” Applejack marveled at the new clothing piece.
“No problem, Applejack.” replied Rarity.
Rarity thought that it was time to make a move, and tell Applejack how she really felt about her.
“Applejack, there’s something that I’ve been keeping from you for a while now..” said Rarity.
“What is it, Rarity?” replied Applejack.
Rarity was trying to tell her, but she kept tripping over the words she was trying to say.
“Sorry about that.” said Rarity.
“It’s fine, Rarity.” replied Applejack.
“So what were you trying to say, Rarity?” said Applejack.
“Oh, uh, forget it.” replied Rarity.
Sunlight was falling, and Rarity was finishing up working on the dress for that day, Applejack and Sweetie Belle were already asleep. Apple Bloom was at home with Granny Smith and Big Mac.
The next day, Rarity was going to finally make her move this time, and tell Applejack her feelings for her.
“Applejack, what I was going to say yesterday, ---”
She stopped talking for a bit, and then told Applejack,
“Applejack...I-well-um why don’t you have a seat?”
“Sure thing Sugarcube!” Applejack sat down, then eyed Rarity suspiciously “You alright hon?”
“Yeah I have something I wan- I have been meaning to-” Rarity kept tripping over her words, growing more flushed with each attempt, she finally looked up sheepishly and looked Applejack square in the eye. Drawing in a sharp breath she said in a very quiet voice, “I love you”
At first Applejack laughed, “I love you too Rarity, we are best friends” She smiled and looked at Rarity who still wore a bashful expression. It then became clear to her that she meant something else. Her expression changed to a little more shocked as she realized what Rarity really meant. She began to blush out of embarrassment “Well -uh- look here Su-sugar cube” But Rarity pulled in closer and looked at Applejack with intent filled eyes.
“What in the name of Celestia are you doing?!?” exclaimed Applejack. She jumped back, knocking over several furniture pieces in shock. Standing up and breathing heavily, she was blushing fully now. She eyeballed Rarity and eased her way towards the door. “I-I-I’m sorry sugar cube...It’s just...my barn door don’t swing that way.” Applejack bowed her head down and left the room, Rarity watched dejected.
Slowly, tears began to well up in Rarity’s eyes, and she began sobbing softly. She walked over to where her bed was, and fell on it. Hugging her pillow tightly, she cried gently into it. She hated everything right now, “Why did I have to do that?” she rolled over “Did I do it wrong?” The tears flowed freely now, soaking the pillow. Yet no matter how much she wept, the tears could never put out the fiery pain that she was going through. Sweetie Belle came upstairs and asked what had happened, Rarity couldn’t tell her sister what had just happened. Not just out of shame, but also because it was too painful to bring up again.
Meanwhile, Applejack opened the door to her home on Sweet Apple Acres, walking pretty slowly, going over the words in her head, seeing the pained look on Rarity’s face, just playing itself over and over.
Applejack wanted to apologize for the way she reacted, but maybe needed some time. She was also thinking about how this affected their friendship. “Well I can’t say I saw that one comin’...” She went to the icebox and pulled out a bottle of Apple Cider “That just ain’t right...” she gulped down the first sip of the cool alcoholic beverage, “just ain’t right...” then she began questioning herself.
Chapter 2: Are We Still Friends?
The next day, Rarity finally broke the news to Sweetie Belle of what had happened the other day. Upon hearing what had happened, Sweetie Belle chuckled and said, “But that doesn’t make any sense, Rarity!” she cocked her head to the left and raised a brow.
Rarity lowered her head and sadly replied, “Sweetie Belle, I’m not kidding around, I’m serious.” She turned away from her little sister to avoid showing her face.
“B-but, you two have been really good friends for a long time.” said Sweetie Belle. Her voice began to quiver as she realized the magnitude of the situation.
“Well, I’m not that sure about us being friends now...” replied Rarity. To be truthful she did want to keep the friendship very much alive, but she wasn’t sure how Applejack was taking to the situation.
“Your friendship can’t end! Never! WHAT DID YOU DO, RARITY? YOU PROBABLY MESSED UP YOUR FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND APPLEJACK!” cried Sweetie Belle, with tears forming in her eyes. She backed away slowly realizing that she had probably touched a bit too hard on the issue.
Rarity felt ashamed of herself, for possibly messing up her friendship between her and Applejack. She walked to her room slowly, her hooves dragging heavily on the carpet. She closed the door behind her and began to drink some Marelot wine.
The next day, it became apparent that something was a-hoof with the two elements. Rarity and Applejack did not talk to each other, they actually looked away from each other when they encountered one-another.
Once Twilight heard about this, she asked Applejack if they were still friends or not. She knew that the balance of the elements of harmony rested in the outcome of this disaster. Applejack responded with,
“I’m not really that sure...” Applejack looked downtrodden, she herself was on the verge of tears. Her frustration mounted as she galloped off into the many rows of trees in her large orchard.
Back at Rarity’s place, Sweetie Belle was wondering to herself, “What if Rarity and Applejack were no longer part of the elements of harmony? What if Equestria needed them again?” and became only four out of six ponies. She was also wondering what Princess Celestia might do if she found out about this.
After some time, Twilight Sparkle decided to write a letter to Princess Celestia about the current conflict going on between Rarity and Applejack.
Over in Canterlot, Princess Celestia took immediate action to the message, and sent a reply letter, reading
My Faithful Student Twilight Sparkle,
Conflict between friends is indeed a grave threat to the standing friendship between the two. While I am not all unfamiliar with this kind of issue, it should be known to you that this is very sensitive and should be handled with utmost care. I, being thousands of years old, have not engaged in such interactions with other ponies. I trust that you, with your studies on friendship have sufficient knowledge to prevent an undesirable outcome. You have saved the friendship between your fellow ponies several times before, I have full faith that you can do it again. For all of Equestria, whose fate lies in the outcome of this, restore the balance to the Elements of Honesty and Generosity.
- Princess Celestia
Twilight had asked Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Dusk Twirl, and Coffee Shine to help her out on fixing the conflict between Rarity and Applejack.
“What kind of conflict between them?” asked Dusk Twirl.
“Well, Applejack told me that Rarity told her that she loved her, and Applejack also told me that she’s not sure if they are friends anymore.” replied Twilight Sparkle.
Chapter 3: The Letter
Meanwhile, at the Carousel Boutique, Rarity was thinking about writing a letter to Applejack, apologizing about what had happened the other day. Levitating her quill, she waved it around while piecing her thoughts together
Dear Applejack,
I am writing this letter to apologize about what happened a few days ago. I know you felt weird about me making such a rash confession. I know you probably feel indignant towards this affair, seeing as you don’t feel the same way. Regardless, I wish to continue our friendship, I can respect your decision either way.
With All Due Respect,
Rarity
She folded the letter carefully, placing it neatly inside a white envelope. She addressed it, and then carried it over to Sweet Apple Acres
“I really hope Applejack forgives me” said Rarity.
Dusk Twirl saw Rarity walking back to the Carousel Boutique, and talked to her there about the conflict between her and Applejack.
“What’s going on between you and Applejack?” asked Dusk Twirl.
“Well, if Applejack or anypony else told you about this, I already wrote a letter to Applejack, I’m just curious on how she’ll feel about it.” replied Rarity.
“Ah, OK. I hope you and Applejack make up and become friends again.” said Dusk Twirl.
“Well, I’m not sure if we’re friends still, but I hope we become friends again when she sees the letter.” replied Rarity.
The next day, Applejack woke up, and was going to applebuck some trees, but then, she saw a note in front of the barn, she opened it up, and took a look at it.
After Applejack read the letter, she was thinking about if she was going to accept or decline the apology for a while, and then, she finally chose her decision.
Taking pen in mouth, she wrote in her neatest script,
Apology Accepted, I forgive you. - Applejack
She then folded her letter in a similar manner to Rarity’s, imitating her folding style. Through some luck, Applejack managed to find a lone envelope lying in the drawer of her desk.
Applejack took the letter to the Carousel Boutique and left it by on the front door. As she walked away, she considered the future. How long it would take for the event to pass over, whether their friends would look at them any differently, or what the princess would think. She did know however, that for now the situation between her and Rarity was going to be all right.
Chapter 4: Making Up
Rarity opened the door of the Carousel Boutique. The sunlight warmed her face and she was greeted by a fresh breeze. She inhaled the fresh air deeply and cleared her mind. She was going to be positive today, regardless of the outcome. She caught the sight of something white in the corner of her eye. Glancing downwards she saw it was a letter. Levitating it with her horn, she brought it to her face and opened it. With a slight crinkle she unfolded the letter and read the words Applejack had written to her. Her eyes widened and started to water, she was overjoyed that Applejack had given her a second chance.
“Oh, thank Celestia! She forgives me. I thought we wouldn’t be friends anymore.” Tears came to Rarity’s eyes, but this time they were of happiness.
Rarity galloped towards her friend’s abode with all haste. The snow crunching under her hooves as she flew down the paths leading up to Sweet Apple Acres. She slowed down as she approached the fence-line and then trotted over to the barn door. She found Applejack organizing stored apples in different boxes. Applejack turned around slowly, lowering herself off the barrel she had just filled with apples. She looked at Rarity and greeted her, looking at her in the eyes.
Rarity initiated the conversation, “I thought we wouldn’t be friends anymore,” She looked down and hoofed at the hay a little before continuing, “I am so grateful to you for reconsidering” Tears started to come to her eyes again.
“Rarity, we’ve already gone through so many problems together, I’d never let something like this get in the way of our friendship sugarcube .” replied Applejack, who was now wiping the tears off Rarity’s cheeks.
“Oh, Applejack...” Rarity was sobbing pretty hard by then, “I’m so blessed to have such good friends.” Rarity started to calm down and Applejack held her until she was ready to move on.
“We should give our friends a holler to let ‘em know it’s good now” Applejack began to walk towards the door.
“Certainly.” replied Rarity.
They told their friends that they both fixed the conflict themselves, and Twilight wrote a letter to Princess Celestia, notifying her that the conflict is fixed, and that they’ve made up.
Dear Princess Celestia,
I would like to inform you, that the conflict between Rarity and Applejack is now solved and that they’ve made up. However, they made up themselves.
Your Faithful Student, Twilight Sparkle.
Spike sent the letter, and the Princess replied with a letter reading,
My Faithful Student, Twilight Sparkle,
It is good to hear that the conflict between your two friends is solved. Perhaps you learned something new about friendship through this conflict? I am very proud of you Twilight Sparkle,
you have grown very much since I first took you under my wing as an entrant to my school for gifted unicorns.
-Princess Celestia
Twilight wrote a response letter to Princess Celestia, and that she did learn something from friendship from this conflict.
Your Faithful Student, Twilight Sparkle
From the conflict between Rarity and Applejack, I have learned something new about friendship. Often friends don’t see things the same way, sometimes misinterpreting what the other meant. Sometimes one friend feels differently than another, and they don’t agree about an issue. Even though this might be true, friends are able to see past differences and still be friends, regardless of what others think.
Your Faithful Student,
-Twilight Sparkle
“It’s nice to hear that you two finally made up.” said Twilight Sparkle.
“Applejack said that nothing like that would get in the way of our friendship.” said Rarity.
“That’s good.” replied Twilight
“But I suspect there is something Applejack wants to tell me, but she just can’t.” said Rarity.
“What do you think she wants to tell you?” asked Twilight Sparkle.
“I’m not all that sure what she wants to tell me, yet.” replied Rarity.
Rarity asked Applejack if there was something wrong.
“Is there something wrong, Applejack?” asked Rarity.
“Nah, everything is just fine and dandy, Rarity...” replied Applejack, but at this time, Rarity knew she was lying.
“Applejack, I know you’re lying. Tell me, tell me tell me tell me TELL ME!” said Rarity.
“OK, fine, I'll tell you.” said Applejack.

Chapter 5 + Epilogue - The Secret
“Okay, well, you know how you’ve loved me?” asked Applejack.
“Yeah, what about it?” replied Rarity.
“Well, I’ve actually made up my mind.. and... I want to date you.” said Applejack.
Rarity’s jaw dropped once she heard this, and immediately yelled “Yes!”
“So it’s a date?” asked Applejack.
“It’s a date.” replied Rarity.
Epilogue
Rarity and Applejack told their friends that they are going on a date, and that this seems like the start of something new.
However, they saw a new pony with them, and asked him who he was.
“Um, who are you?” asked Rarity.
“My name is Garnet Fog. Age 13 and an aspiring writer.” he said “Nice to meet you!” said Garnet Fog, extending his hoof to the two ponies. After he shook them, he looked puzzled and said, “Sweet Celestia, that was too formal even for me. Don’t get to used to it!” he said with a tiny smirk.
“We met him earlier today.” said Rainbow Dash.
“Ah, OK.” replied Rarity.
“Wow. So you two are going to go on a date? Maybe Pinkie can throw a party for you two.” said Fluttershy.
“Of course! I’ll throw a super-duper-extra awesome party for you two! It’ll be so awesome, we will have cake, games, romantic candles, and much more tons of super fun stuff!” said Pinkie Pie, who was bouncing up and down, happily and excited.
“It’s fine, Pinkie Pie, you don’t need to go through all of that just for one party.” said Rarity.
“It’s not a problem! I can get everything set up in a blink of an eye.” replied Pinkie Pie.
“Really, It’s fine, Pinkie.” said Applejack.
Pinkie Pie let out a sigh, and said “Okay, fine.”
The next day, it was Saturday, the day of the date, Rarity was excited for her first date with Applejack.
“Today is the day, Opalescence! I go on a date with Applejack!” said Rarity, to her pet cat, Opalescence.
She got ready, and went to the restaurant they were going to for the date.
“It’s the start of something new.” said Rarity.
