Pinkie's Lament
Chapter 1: Pinkie's Doozy Sense is Tingling
Load Full Story Next Chapter“Twilight, hey Twilight!”
Twilight facehoofed as she heard the high-pitched, saccharine shouting of Pinkie Pie. Any other day and she would be glad to see Ponyville’s premier party pony. However, today she was just a bit too busy for Pinkie’s antics. She reluctantly began to turn around in the opposite direction from the library; the direction which the excitable pink mare’s voice seemed to come from.
“Pinkie…I-” Twilight was interrupted by a pink blur colliding with her side and causing her to end up face to face with the dusty path running through the main street of the town.
“Twilight, you won’t believe what’s happening in Rarity’s Boutique tonight! It’s a doozy!” Pinkie exclaimed from on top of the purple bookworm as she shuddered with what ponies that were less familiar with her might mistake for excitement.
“I don’t need ‘Pinkie sense’ to know that Rarity throwing a ‘hired by royalty’ party is a ‘doozy’.” The purple and pink maned unicorn replied curtly, sitting up onto her haunches and pushing the still vigorously shaking pink baker off. “Anyway, Pinkie, I need-”
“No Twilight, it’s not that! That’s not the doozy! It’s bigger than that!” The pink oddity interjected, voice juddering along with her body. The violet brain box pulled her body up off the ground and attempted to dust herself off before trying to speak again.
“Pinkie-“
“It’s huge!”
“Pinkie I-“
“I can just feel it!”
“Pinkie, I don’t-“
“The doozy to end all doozy’s!”
“Pinkie Pie-“
“And it’s going to happen-“
“PIIIINKIIIIEEE!” Twilight shouted, stamping her front hooves down onto the ground, finally snapping.
“-to- yes, Twilight?” The pink mare asked innocently, clearly not noticing the librarian’s annoyance. Twilight fidgeted; she almost felt guilty for getting so agitated. She exhaled deeply, trying to remove all anger from her voice before explaining herself to the tireless pink energy ball.
“Look, Pinkie, I really don’t have time for this right now. I have to get back to the library to finish Rarity’s present, get ready for her party and help Spike get ready for her party, then I have to go to Rarity’s to help with the preparations for the party. Not to mention that I need to find some time to get some essential studying done and dictate a friendship report to be sent to Princess Celestia in between all this!”
“Oh…” Pinkie breathed, sadness crossing her face for the briefest of moments; before she cheered right back up again. “Well why didn’t you say so in the first place, silly filly?”
“You didn’t exactly give me a chance, did you?” Twilight asked exasperatedly, seemingly causing the bright pink balloon flanked mare to stop vibrating and place a hoof to her chin, looking up at nothing in particular. After a few seconds of what seemed to be ‘deep thinking’ she giggled, moving out her pose and responded, “…No, I guess I didn’t! Sorry for holding you up so much Twilight; it’s just I had to tell somepony about the doozy!”
Twilight just couldn’t help but allow her face to break into a smile at the pink cotton candy pony’s sunny apology. “It’s alright Pinkie, you didn’t know after all; even if it’s your own fault you didn’t. But now that you do, I really need to excuse myself, sooo…” She said as she began to turn back around and run in the direction of the library.

“Okie-dokie-loki, see you later Twilight!” Pinkie called after the violet unicorn mare’s disappearing form cheerily, waving farewell with her right foreleg enthusiastically. Only once the magical book keeper had completely disappeared did the pink party pony stop waving. The pink mare stopped pretending and exhaled deeply, relaxing her body a bit as she did so. She turned and began to trot in the direction of Sugarcube Corner. She had to admit, she was disappointed; she really wanted to tell somepony about this doozy. But Twilight was very busy, so Pinkie didn’t blame her. Although the candy loving mare couldn’t help but let her thoughts drift back to her last birthday…
The cotton candy mare stopped abruptly in front of Daisy, Roseluck and Lily’s Flower shop and shook her head vigorously.
“No, don’t think like that Pinkie!” The bouncy pink fluff ball said to herself a little bit loudly, causing a nearby Lyra and Bonbon to jump. Pinkie didn’t notice of course; she just continued to monologue, “You know that they all made up those stories for a reason. Anyway, Twilight’s not lying this time, or making excuses. She really is busy and you know it! Don’t be such a not-trusting, not-believing, grumpy guts!” The pink party pony shuddered again, snapping her out of her reverie. She shook her head and began to trot again, deciding she didn’t have time to waste. She had to tell somepony about this doozy. It was just too big to keep to herself. She brought a hoof up to her chin, without breaking pace as she passed a now very confused looking Carrot Top. Who could she tell if Twilight was busy though? She began to think through all her friends. She couldn’t tell Applejack, since she was busy helping the cakes prepare food for the party, something which Pinkie had been doing too, until she was hit by her pinkie sense and started sending cupcake batter all over the kitchen. Then there was Rarity; who she obviously couldn’t talk to right now because of the party…
Just then, Rainbow Dash flew by overhead, leaving her trademark rainbow in her wake. The blue eyed pink mare grinned widely as she shook again. If she couldn’t tell Twilight about the doozy then she would tell her partner in pranks; she was sure to be interested! Pinkie bounded after her multi-hued target, absolutely determined to catch up. She just had to pass on her news; if not only to forget her paranoid thoughts.

“…Step two – fly around the clouds, bringing them together and shaping them into a perfect copy of my cutie mark!” Rainbow Dash said as she readied herself to burst forth back into the sky on a nearby apple tree trunk. It was the perfect day for flying practice; the Wonderbolts were sure to accept her in an instant when they saw this routine. She pulled her wings back, ready to launch herself up…
“Daaaashiiiee!” A cheerful voice called out musically. Upon hearing the sugary voice, the cyan pegasus halted herself just as she took off from the ground in a burst of incredible speed, instantly recognising who it would be. She looked around for the source and saw the mare in question prancing in her direction from the road leading away from Sweet Apple Acres western apple field.
“Oh, hey Pinkie Pie! What’s up?” She said cheerfully, flapping her wings slightly to keep herself aloft.
“Well lots of things Dashie! The birds, the clouds, the sky, the sun, you…” the ditzy Pink mare answered.
“That’s not quite what I meant Pinks…” Dash said with more than a hint of exasperation. Just at that moment Pinkie began to vibrate again. “Oohh – Pinkie sense; is that why you’re here?” The pink earth pony nodded enthusiastically in response.
“Y-y-y-u-up! Th-th-thi-is one m-m-m-e-eans a-a-a d-d-doo-z-z-y i-i-is g-g-going t-t-t-to happ-p-p-en!” Pinkie replied, unable to keep her voice from shaking with her body.
“A doozy huh? What kind of doozy?” Rainbow asked, slightly worried. She knew pinkie sense was more useful than not, and it had helped out a lot of times before – it had even helped prevent an Everfree generated storm from destroying Ponyville a few times – however, it didn’t mean that she wasn’t just a teensy bit on edge when Pinkie was affected by it. Not that she was scared of course.
“Well I don’t know what KIND of doozy. I just know it’s a big one! And it’s going to happen at Carousel Boutique! And for some reason I know the pony that it’ll happen to will be-”
“RAAAAIIIINBOOOOW DAAAAASH!” called a yellow pegasus with a blue mane and tail in the distance, cutting Pinkie off, “Rainbow, we need you to help clear some storm clouds over near the eastern front of the Everfree Forest!”
“What!? But I just cleared some there a couple of hours ago! Ugh…sorry Pinks – do you mind telling me later? That really can’t wait.” The sky coloured mare said agitatedly.
Pinkie visibly deflated, before perking up again and saying cheerfully,
“That’s alright Dashie! I know how super-duper dangerous it would be if you left an Everfree storm alone!” Dash smiled in response,
“Thanks for understanding Pinks. I’ll see you at Rarity’s tonight?”
“Yep! Of course you will, what kind of party pony would I be if I missed such an important party?” The excitable pink pony replied enthusiastically.
“Cool. See you later then!” Rainbow Dash said as she flew away to join the other Pegasus.

“Bye Dashie!” The pink party mare called as Rainbow Dash flew away. Once the cyan speedster was out of sight, she sighed and fell down onto her rump. Why did everypony have to be so busy today? She fell back into the soft grass and looked up at the clear summer’s sky. The sun was still pretty high in the sky; Pinkie guessed it was about twenty-seven minutes past two. Another shudder wracked her entire body, causing her to momentarily leave the ground. Once her body had finished she landed on her mane and tail, which had somehow gotten stuck in just the right positions to prevent her injuring herself.
Rarity’s party wouldn’t begin for another four hours and three minutes, well, one minute now. Pinkie thought about what she could do until then as she watched a pink and blue butterfly flutter above her. She knew that everypony else would be too preoccupied with preparations for the party and other things to listen to her; even Fluttershy would be too busy, and she always made sure to pay attention to Pinkie Sense.
Another full body twitch session began and passed.
And because she was shaking so much, there wasn’t much she could help out with. Well, not without it being affected by being shaken up like a milkshake…
“THAT’S IT!” Pinkie shouted enthusiastically, springing back up onto her hooves. If she couldn’t do something without her shaking affecting it, she’d do something that needed her shaking to affect it! She turned back towards the fields of Sweet Apple Acres and began to hop with even more glee than she had all day.
“Gotta get going now! The day’s wasting away and if I don’t get back to Sugarcube corner and get started soon, then there’s no way I’ll be able to make enough treats for everypony!” She said excitedly to nopony in particular, stopping to quiver yet again and giggling before she continued along the path through the apple fields which would lead her directly towards town; the meaning behind her shuddering completely forgotten for now.
