Chapter 1: New Unicorn in Town
It was a peaceful day in Ponyville, the birds were singing and the sun was shining. If you closed your eyes you could forget anypony was around you, or at least you could until the Cutie Mark Crusaders came flying down the road. Scootaloo was racing through the town on her scooter with Applebloom and Sweetie Belle in a trailer they had tied to the back of the scooter. As they neared their destination they turned a sharp corner, shooting dirt against the houses, making a few angry mares come out of their houses.
"Slow down you three!" Berry Punch shouted from her doorstep, hiccuping as she trotted back inside. The three fillies didn't listen to her and sped up, but at the next corner they were going to fast and lost control.
"Watch out!" Scootaloo shouted as her and the other two jump off the scooter and trailer, watching as it went skidding towards a white Unicorn mare with two tone red hair. The three fillies cringed as the Unicorn was hit by the trailer, throwing her to the ground. Knowing that they would get in trouble if they stuck around the Crusaders ran away, making their way towards Sugar Cube Corner. As they ran they looked behind to see the Unicorn pull herself up off the ground, covered in dirt. She looked around angrily, stopping when she looked at the Scooter.
"Uh oh!" Scootaloo said quickly as they hopped around the corner of Sugar Cube Corner, looking around it for any sign of the Unicorn.
"What do you think she's going to do to us?" Sweetie Belle asked worriedly. This was the first time they had ever hit somepony with the scooter, and since it was a Unicorn they knew she could do anything to them.
"What if she tells our sisters?!" Applebloom cried, knowing how angry Applejack would be if she found out that she had hit a pony. Scootaloo quickly coughed, being the only on without a sister.
"What if she tells Cheerilee?!" Sweetie Belle said, making Scootaloo cower in fear with them. The three fillies cowered in fear as Pinkie poked her head around the corner, making them look at her in surprise. What was she doi-
"I found them!" Pinkie said happily, making the three fillies stiffen flat as a board. There was no way Pinkie just told the Unicorn where they were, right? Right?!
"Ah, here you three are..." an unfamiliar voice said from behind Pinkie. The three fillies watched in horror as the Unicorn they had hit appeared in front of them, looking at them calmly. As the three fillies relaxed Pinkie walked away, being shooed off by the unknown mare. Once Pinkie was gone the mare turned back to the fillies, looking through each of them.
"Why did you hit me?" the mare asked, looking each of them down. Applebloom went to explain, but Scootaloo blurted it out first.
"We were going really fast and lost control, then the scooter and trailer went towards you and, well," Scootaloo said quickly, nearly tripping over her own words, "But I did say watch out!"
"I couldn't hear you though, I was busy doing something more important" the mare said, pulling a list out of her saddlebag, which, like the bag it came from, was crumpled and dirty. Sweetie Belle looked at the list closely, seeing something that looked like an address.
"Are you new to town?" Sweetie Belle asked nicely, only to be stared at by the mare.
"Of course I'm new here, why else would I have a map?" the mare said, waving the sheet of paper in the fillies face. The fillies looked at the paper closely, seeing what looked like lines and a large black arrow going along them.
"That's supposed to be a map?" Applebloom though aloud, covering her mouth as soon as she realized it.
"I told him it wasn't a good map" the mare said, looking at the map herself, cursing under her breath, "Use less boyfriend...". The fillies laughed as the mare put the "map" back in her saddlebag.
"Anyways!" the mare said suddenly, making the fillies stop laughing, "You need to learn a lesson to respect others"
"How are we going to do that?" Scootaloo asked sarcastically, but the light blue glow made her jaw drop. There was no was she was going to use magic to do, something, to them, right? There was a bright flash from the Unicorns horn, blinding the three fillies. When they opened their eyes they felt like something was, different...
"Where are my wings?!" Scootaloo cried, looking at her back, her small orange wings missing from their usual place. When she looked up she saw Applebloom and Sweetie Belle staring at each other in surprise, and with good reason too. Applebloom now had a horn and Sweetie Belle had wings. The two of them slowly looked at Scootaloo, their jaws dropping.
"You're an Earth pony!" the two fillies shouted, making Scootaloo scream in surprise. They looked at the mare they had hit to see her smiling happily.
"Maybe now you'll respect everypony more" the mare said with a laugh, making the three fillies cower in fear. How long where they going to be like this? Would they ever go back to normal? How would everypony act when they saw them like this?
"Why did you change us like this?" Applebloom asked sadly, looking at the mare with pleading eyes. The mare looked at her seriously, but her face lightened up quickly when she thought about it.
"I actually don't know, but your faces were priceless" the mare said, laughing at the three fillies terrified looks, "It should wear off in a few days"
"Should?" Scootaloo asked, looking at the mare angrily.
"I've never been all that good at magic" the mare admitted, moving to the side to show her cutie mark, "I'm just good at painting with it". The three fillies groaned as a chocolate toned Pegasus landed behind the mare. He slowly moved up beside her, pulling her into a hug out of nowhere. The mare yelped as she was pulled further into the hug, and while she chewed him out the Crusaders slipped away, and once they were out of sight they started running towards Twilight's library. She has got to know how to reverse this, right?
...right?
Chapter 2: Breaking the News
"TWILIGHT!" the Crusaders shouted as they got close to the library, interrupting Spike's nap. The angry dragon got up out of his bed and lazily made his way to the door. When he opened it up he was trampled by the three frantic fillies. He tried to get out from under them, but every attempt ended with a hoof in his face. After the Crusaders had stopped running into the library Spike got up shakily, being knocked silly by their hooves.
"Welcome to Ponyville Library" Spike said shakily as he wobbled towards the door in an attempt to shut it. He missed the door and slipped, ending up on his face outside the door. A few ponies that were walking by giggled when they saw him, getting the Crusader's attention.
"Oh, sorry Spike!" Applebloom said quickly as she ran over to help Spike to his feet. Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo giggled to themselves as Spike hung his arm over Applebloom for support. As she helped Spike up to his bed Twilight came into the main room, looking around in confusion, being followed by the rest of the Elements, including Pinkie.
"Hi girls, what are you doing here?" Twilight asked as she looked for Applebloom, seeing her carrying Spike up the stairs. Applejack quickly walked past Twilight to help Applebloom with Spike. When Applejack got next to Applebloom she gasped, steeping back and nearly falling to the ground.
"What is it Applejack?" Twilight asked as she moved to steady Applejack. When Applejack didn't say anything she looked at Applebloom, seeing what had scared Applejack.
"Why do you have a horn?!" Twilight shouted, looking at Applebloom in surprise.
"Why does Sweetie have wings?!" Rarity cried, holding up Sweetie Belle with her magic, showing her new wings to Twilight, making her twitch. Twilight went through every possible scenario that could have ended with them switches races, but, nothing made any sense. She continued to think until Scootaloo coughed, bringing attention to her.
"Are you an Earth pony now?" Rainbow asked, looking at Scootaloo's side, receiving an annoyed look from Scootaloo. Rainbow grinned nervously while turning to look at Twilight, along with everypony else. Twilight looked around nervously, still trying to figure out what had happened, but this time Applebloom coughing broke the silence.
"We can kinda explain that..." Applebloom said as she made her way to the edge of the stairs. Everypony below took a seat, looking up at Applebloom as if she was Princess Celestia herself. She quickly cleared her throat before using her new found magic to create an image of what had happened. At first it looked like a crudely drawn picture, but very quickly after it looked almost lifelike, causing Twilight to raise a hoof.
"How did you get so good at doing that already?" Twilight asked, getting looked at by Applebloom.
"What do you mean?" Applebloom asked, seemingly oblivious to the magic she was using.
"She's talking about this" Sweetie Belle said, poking her hoof into the image Applebloom was creating, hovering beside it with her new wings. Applebloom and everypony else gasped as Sweetie Belle realized what she was doing. Sweetie Belle quickly fell to the ground, landing with a hard thump. Rarity quickly jumped up to see if she was okay, but Sweetie Belle pushed here away.
"I'm fine, don't worry" Sweetie Bllle said as she got up, grimacing slightly as she felt a pain in her flank. She quickly walked back to where she had been sitting before as Applebloom went back to explaining what had happened. When she got to the end of the story, where they had their races switched she let off a flash from her horn, momentarily blinding everypony.
"So you have no idea what happened?" Rainbow asked while scratching her head in confusion.
"If they knew, wouldn't they have already fixed it?" Rarity said, shooting Rainbow an annoyed look. The Crusaders shook their heads before looking to Twilight, who was now running around the library in an attempt to find a book that would tell her what kind of magic had done this to them. After thirty minutes of waiting Twilight came back, looking at them sadly.
"I can't find anything on this kind of spell" Twilight said as she looked at the three mismatched fillies. The Crusaders looked at Twilight with horror, but then Fluttershy finally spoke up.
"Wouldn't Celestia know something about this?" Fluttershy said quietly, getting everypony's attention, making her shy away. Twilight quickly ran up the stairs to get Spike so she could send a letter to the princess. After some annoyed grunts from Spike he was on his way downstairs, taking a seat next to Applebloom. As Twilight looked for a letter Spike slumped over, leaning on Applebloom, making the other Crusaders giggle.
"Spike and Applebloom sitting in a tree-" the Crusaders started to chant before realizing that they actually were sitting in a tree. They looked at each other, stumped as to what other chant they could use to embarrass Applebloom. Applebloom rolled her eyes before turning back to Spike, shaking him awake as Twilight came down the stairs.
"Spike, take a letter" Twilight ordered, handing the paper and pen to Spike, but he pushed them away with a grunt. Applebloom sighed as she took the things from Twilight, proceeding to write the letter for Spike. She looked at Twilight expectantly, but Twilight just smiled back.
"Why don't you write the letter?" Twilight suggested, surprising everypony. They all watched in awe as Applebloom flawlessly wrote down what had happened, her writing skills matching Twilight's. She quickly wrapped up the letter, patting Spike on the back to make him burp. As he did she put the letter in the way, sending it to Celestia.
"Quick thinkin' there Applebloom" Applejack said happily, finding it funny that Applebloom had managed to do all that so soon after getting her horn. Sweetie Belle quickly flew over Applebloom's shoulder while Scootaloo walked over sadly.
"What'd you write down anyways?" Scootaloo asked, followed by a nod from Sweetie Belle. Applebloom just grinned at them, standing up as she walked towards the door.
"You'll find out eventually, right Twilight?" Applebloom asked cheerfully, opening the door with her magic. Twilight nodded back smiling as well. Sweetie Belle quickly flew out the door past Applebloom, but Applebloom pulled her back to the ground. Despite their fear at first, both Applebloom and Sweetie Belle had started to like their new found abilities. Although they liked their new lives, Scootaloo hated it. This was just one more confirmation that she would never fly. As Applebloom and Sweetie Belle cheerfully ran up ahead, Scootaloo slowly trailed behind, staring at the ground the entire time.
Chapter 3: A Scoot Left Behind
"Come on Scootaloo, pick up the pace!" Applebloom said cheerfully as she ran down the road, Sweetie Belle flying just above her. Scootaloo looked up at the two of them and sighed before speeding up a tiny bit. Why were her friends so lucky, getting to do magic and fly, and all she could do was walk, like a normal pony. Scootaloo hated it. She had always wanted to fly next to Rainbow Dash, her idol, and get to see all the wonders of the world from high up in the clouds, and now...
"Cheer up Scoots, we can still try and get our cutie marks even if we're like this" Sweetie Belle said happily as she floated in front of Scootaloo, unintentionally blowing dust into her face. Scootaloo grunted and turned around, quickly being blocked off by Sweetie Belle.
"Where are you going?" Sweetie Belle asked innocently, but to Scootaloo it was an interrogation.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" Scootaloo shouted, pushing Sweetie Belle away as she did before running away towards Sugar Cube Corner. As she ran she came up with a plan to reverse all of this, so she could get her wings back from Sweetie Belle and things would go back to normal. All she had to do was find that Unicorn and she could fix things, right? Sadly, things weren't going to be that easy for Scootaloo. When she got to Sugar Cube Corner she saw no sign of the Unicorn, which made her want to break down and cry, right then and there, until...
"What are you doing?" a familiar voice asked from inside the bakery, making Scootaloo snap out of her sadness and head inside. When she got inside she saw the Unicorn, this time accompanied by a Pegasus who was looking at her in a funny way.
"What, does this voice annoy you my dear?" the stallion asked in a way that sounded similar to how Princess Luna spoke, "I was not aware this was an irritant for you"
"Stop it or I'm leavi-" the Unicorn said in a somewhat angry tone of voice, but was cut off as the stallion jumped to the ground in front of her.
"Please no, don't leave me, I love you!" the stallion cried, pulling on one of the mare's hooves, making her try to hold back a laugh.
"I was going to say, 'or I'm leaving to go home', why would I leave you over something like that?" the mare laughed, making the stallion blush deeply as he got back to his chair. He looked at the ground for a few seconds before looking back up, noticing Scootaloo standing behind the mare.
"Uh, muffin, isn't that one of the fillies from earlier?" the stallion asked, pointing at Scootaloo, who shied away from the pair. The Unicorn turned around and looked at Scootaloo and noticed her sad look. The stallion got out of his chair, getting the feeling that something was off, and walked towards Scootaloo.
"Is everything okay?" the stallion asked as he knelt down in front her, looking towards her face. Scootaloo tried to shy away, but eventually looked into his eyes, feeling oddly comforted by it. She smiled slowly, but then the Unicorn walked over behind him.
"Did you learn your lesson?" the mare asked, giving Scootaloo a stern look.
"What are you talking about?" the stallion asked, standing up to look the Unicorn in the face. She quickly pulled him away and explained everything to him, and as she finished he looked at her in surprise.
"Why would you do that Pallet?" the stallion asked, giving her a worried look.
"They hit me with a cart Choco, they deserved it!" the mare said in an annoyed voice, pouting afterwards. The stallion quickly facehoofed and then pulled the mare into a hug, whispering something into her ear. When he pulled back he gave her a quick kiss, and then they walked over to Scootaloo together.
"Come on, let's get this thing sorted out" the stallion said cheerfully, extending a hoof towards Scootaloo, which she took tentatively. As they left the bakery he pulled Scootaloo up and put her on his back, which made her smile. It has been a long time since she's been treated this way by somepony bigger than her, and she didn't mind being treated like a baby for right now...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What made her so mad?" Sweetie Belle asked as she watched Scootaloo run away. Applebloom walked over slowly, watching as Scootaloo turned a corner, leaving the two of them alone for good.
"I don't know, maybe she isn't feeling good" Applebloom said, using her magic to help Sweetie Belle up off the ground. After Sweetie Belle nodded her thank you the two of them continued walking through the town, trying to think of someway to earn their cutie marks with their new abilities.
"What if I tried to fly really fast and do a sonic rainboom, maybe it'll give us cutie marks like it did for our sisters" Sweetie Belle said carefully, being carefully to explain herself correctly.
"Maybe, but what would I be doing?" Applebloom asked, looking at Sweetie Belle in confusion.
"Maybe harvesting apples with your magic" Sweetie Belle said as the orchard came into view, the glistening red apples shining in the sunlight.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, let's do that!" Applebloom said happily. The two of them ran towards the orchard happily laughing as they started thinking of ways to do what they had set out to do. Sweetie Belle was planning to go up as far as she could then fly down really fast, and then level out, hopefully picking up enough speed to break the sound barrier. Applebloom was planning to try harvesting all of the apples at once, putting them all into barrels perfectly.
As the afternoon went on they continued to try and get their cutie marks, doing what they had decided on in weird and abstract ways until almost three hours had passed. They eventually gave up and grouped up to continue coming up with ideas.
"Scootaloo, we planned to-" Sweetie Belle said before remembering that Scootaloo had run away from her earlier.
"She's not here Sweetie Belle, it's her loss" Applebloom said sadly, not wanting to admit it, but if Scootaloo wasn't going to be there then she wouldn't get her cutie mark with her friends. The two of them continued to come up with ideas, the thought of getting their cutie marks without Scootaloo stuck in the back of their minds...
