Chapter 7: Babies and Rings

At the crack of dawn Soarin and Big Mac met out front of the farm house. Today was the day they went out into Ponyville and spent a whole ton of bits on fancy rings for their special somepony. Sadly, unlike many other stallions, they did not plan ahead of time to go the store, and therefore, were completely, and utterly, clueless as to what they were looking for. Overnight they had attempted to get information out of their others, but were left with nothing but a four word answer.

"Just get a ring"

The two stallions sighed as they remembered those words. For a moment they stopped and looked at each other, and couldn't help but laugh at the situation they were in.

"Who would have thought we'd be looking for rings together after you chased me through town?" Soarin said while laughing cheerfully.

"Who would have thought we'd be brother in-laws!" Big Mac said happily, laughing heartily. The two of them continued to laugh as they entered town, their laughter eventually waking up Ponyville's resident drama queen, Rarity.

"Will you two knock it off?!" she shouted from her boutique, which was at least seven buildings away from them. This caused many of the other stallions around the boutique to start laughing as well, livening up their morning before a tough day at work. There was a very audible sigh from Rarity's boutique as she shoved her head under her pillow in an attempt to drown out the laughter. Although her plan backfired as instead of drowning out the laughter, she only made it louder. Soarin and Big Mac continued to laugh until they reached their destination, Ponyville Fine Jewelry.

"Ready?" Big Mac asked, his eyes widening as he looked through the front windows, seeing the large assortment of rings, necklaces, and earrings.

"Ready as I'll ever be" Soarin said with a sigh before walking into the shop. Inside there were display cases on every inch of the wall, and in the middle there was a semicircle display case surrounding a rather old looking stallion. He smiled happily as they entered the store, laughing quietly to himself as their jaws dropped. There were rings everywhere, in every shape, size, and metal, along with every possible gemstone shape and color.

"Holy..." Big Mac said slowly as he scanned the right side of the stored.

"...Moley" Soarin continued as he scanned the left side. With both of them being rather oblivious to a mare's jewelry for most of their lives they were utterly amazed at how many choices they were now faced with. Gold or Silver? Which gemstone? Would they like a special cut?

"We're going to be here for a while..." Soarin said as he walked over to a display case filled with emerald rings, matching Applejack's old eye color.

"Eeyup" Big Mac said as he walked over to the amethyst display case, preparing to spend hours staring at each and every ring inside it. Both stallions had decided to make the rings special, and have them match some part of their other's body, but with the number of choices they had just for eye color...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I think my eyes are going to pop out of my skull!" Soarin cried as he rubbed his eyes furiously.

"Eeyup!" Big Mac quickly said, rubbing his eyes as well. They had been looking at rings for the entire morning and their eyesight was starting to get blurry from staring at shiny objects for such a long time. As they sat down to rub their eyes with both forelegs they heard the door open for the first time since they arrived.

"I don't see why I had to come along, it's your job to find me a ring" a white Unicorn mare with two tone red hair said as she walked into the store beside a chocolate toned Pegasus with brown hair. The mare was obviously annoyed with the stallion, but she didn't seem to mind being in the shop.

"I know that, but I don't know a thing about rings, nor do I know what kind of ring you want" the stallion said in an irritated tone of voice.

"Whatever, let's look in here" the mare said while pointing at the sapphire rings. The stallion lowered his head quickly and trotted over, looking into the case intently.

"How about that one muffin?" the stallion said pointing to a spot in the display case.

"No, not that one" the mare said as she shook her head.

"This one?" the stallion asked, pointing at another ring.

"No" the mare replied flatly.

"This one?" the stallion asked desperately.

"No Choco, why don't we look at that case over there?" the mare said while pointing at the emerald case. The stallion reluctantly followed her over, obviously not enjoying his time in the store. Soarin and Big Mac watched the couple as they walked around the store, looking for the mare's perfect ring. Eventually they got to the last display case in the store when the mare finally said yes to a ring.

"You sure you want a moonstone ring muffin?" the stallion asked carefully, not wanting to upset the mare. The mare nodded enthusiastically and pulled the stallion towards the store owner, who happily took his bits in exchange for the ring. Before the stallion could grab the ring the mare pulled it away from him, sliding in onto her horn proudly.

"How does it look?" the mare asked cheerfully, smiling at the stallion.

"Great!" the stallion said in actual enthusiasm, which got him a big kiss from the mare. As they walked out of the store she walked up close to his side and let him put his wing around her. Soarin and Big Mac watched through the store windows as they walked away, kissing each other every few steps out of happiness.

"I hate that guy" Soarin said bluntly.

"Me too" Big Mac said as he turned around to look at more rings, "At least his mare helped him find a ring..."

"Took the words right out of my mouth" Soarin groaned as he continued his search as well. The two of them still had a long day ahead of them...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, back on Sweet Apple Acres, Applejack and Rainbow were sitting on Applejack's bed, chatting about random things to pass the time. Every now and then they would talk about Soarin or Big Mac, but the subject usually changed before their thoughts could change to how their pregnancy changed their lives.

"So, what are you going to do after the wedding?" Rainbow asked, having officially run out of other things to talk about.

"I don't know, probably stay at home with the twins while he goes off a does his Wonderbolts thing" Applejack said honestly. Neither of them had really talked with their special somepony about what was going to happy once they were married, and with Applejack being blind her options were severely limited.

"Hey AJ?" Rainbow asked quietly.

"Yeah Rainbow?" Applejack asked back, worried about her friends tone of voice.

"Are you ready to be a mom?" Rainbow asked nervously, but Applejack could understand her worries, or so she thought.

"Of course I am, I love kids, and even with me being blind and all, I'll still love 'em to death" Applejack said cheerfully, but she quickly noticed a rather depressing atmosphere in the room.

"I don't think I'm ready to be a mother again..." Rainbow said quietly, trying to hold back tears. Applejack quickly put a leg around her, pulling her into a hug.

"What do you mean by again Rainbow?" Applejack asked while Rainbow silently cried into her chest.

"You know how Scootaloo doesn't seem to have parents right?" Rainbow asked through the tears.

"Yeah, what about it?" Applejack asked, trying to put two and two together, "Are you sayin' that..."

"I'm her mother" Rainbow said as her tears started to force their way out, drenching her face along with Applejack's chest, "I had to give her up, or else..."

"What happened Rainbow?" Applejack asked worriedly as she patted Rainbow on the back.

"You remember the bullies from the best young flier competition, right?" Rainbow asked, her tears still coming out at a fast rate.

"Yeah...?" Applejack asked worriedly. If Rainbow was about to say what she thinks she is...

"One time, after speedster practice they followed me, and when every other filly had left the change room they..." Rainbow said, breaking out into tears again, unable to talk.

"I'm so sorry Rainbow..." Applejack said sadly as she rubbed Rainbow's back, hugging her with her other leg in an attempt to comfort her, but there wasn't much a friend could do about something like that. After a few minutes of crying Rainbow had calmed down enough to talk again and sat up, breaking Applejack's hug.

"I got pregnant, and because I was still in school I had to give the baby up..." Rainbow said sadly, thinking back to the time she had spent in a doctor's office after what happened.

"I'm guessing it was Scootaloo?" Applejack asked carefully, not wanting to make Rainbow start crying again. Rainbow leaned back into Applejack and nodded, once again crying so much that talking was impossible. Applejack knew that Rainbow felt like a horrible mother, but she had no idea what to say to comfort her. The two of them stayed there for almost an hour before Rainbow stopped crying completely.

"Thanks for listening Applejack" Rainbow said as she got off of the bed with Applejack close behind.

"That's what sister's are for" Applejack said cheerfully, managing to get a small laugh out of Rainbow. As they made their way downstairs they could hear the cutie mark crusaders arguing in the living room, and quickly went to go help out. Applejack reminded Applebloom to be respectful of other pony's opinions, and Rainbow sat down next to Scootaloo, going over her list of things they could try, crossing out the ones that were too dangerous for them. Just as Granny Smith started to prepare dinner Soarin and Big Mac came home exhausted. Applejack got up and headed for Soarin as Rainbow made her way to Big Mac.

"Did you get it?" the two mares asked happily.

"Yes..." the stallions groaned, both of them collapsing to the ground, causing the rings to fall next to them. Applejack and Rainbow laughed as Rainbow picked up the rings. Before helping Soarin and Big Mac up the stairs Applejack asked Rainbow to describe the rings to her. Even if she couldn't see the ring, she wanted to know how it felt to have your fiance pick out a, hopefully beautiful, ring for you. As they set the stallions in their beds they gave them a quick kiss to thank them for all their hard work that day, leaving the stallions smiling as they drifted off to sleep.
