A Night At A Cottage

Written by KingSombraTheTyrantRuler

On the evening that I am considering, I had been taking a pleasant stroll around town, for I had nothing better to do.

It was a pleasant stroll until suddenly, a storm broke out. I flew as fast as I could, looking for shelter.

Curse them weather pegasi! Would it kill them to give a warning beforehoof?

I found a cottage, and raced to it. The door was locked, so I bucked it as hard as I could, wishing I was an earth pony so that I would be able to open this door easily.

After a few bucks, it gave way and I ran inside, not wishing to get any wetter.

It slammed shut, and the sound made me jump. Calming myself from the shock, I decided to find a fireplace so that I may warm myself.

I had gotten a little wet, and wasn't looking forward to having a fever.

Because were I to get a fever, I would have to go to the hospital if it became serious, and Nurse Redheart would berate me. And I was not looking forward to that.

I walked around the cottage, and finding no fireplace on the lower floor, flew up the stairs to check.

On my way up, I noticed the cottage was covered with a few centuries of dust, as if it had been abandoned for a while.

I paid it no mind and continued my way into a bedroom, in which there was a fireplace.

It looked abandoned as the rest of the cottage, but luckily had some wood in it.

Using my hooves, I began to rub two sticks together and created a fire, which I used to light the fireplace.

Then I sat close to the fire, and waited for both the storm to finish, and my fur and mane to dry.

I eventually grew bored and decided to look around the room. It had a few pictures on the wall of some mare.

And in all the pictures, the mare had a sad look on her face.

I decided to look at other things, and when I was done, said to myself, "This is a real nice cottage. Once the storm is over, I might come back to make it suitable for living in. Though, I wonder why nopony else took this for a home."

"There's a story behind that," somepony says, making me jump and have a mini heart attack.

I put a hoof on my heart and gasp, "Y-you gave me quite a fright!"

She apologizes, "Sorry."

"So, what's the story behind this cottage?"

"Sit, and I shall tell you." She lights a few lamps, and then begins her story. "Time was, there wasn't a cozier little cottage in Equestria, nor a garden which carried more beauty.

Ponies from every corner of the land used to come here, simply to gaze upon this cottage."

"What happened?"

She gives a troubled sigh. "Ghosts."

"Ghosts?"

"She that lived here. It's a mighty sad tale, and I'll not tell you it, but the upshot of it was that She drowned herself in the pond here. All slimy she was, and floating when they pulled her out of it.

Weeks before the incident, some had seen her waiting at the school for her children, as if she'd forgotten how they were all dead.

Twilight Sparkle, the mare who looked into it said that She may have been possessed by some evil spirit, for she found the mare's husband dead. It wasn't a pretty sight, what with all the blood everywhere.

A diary entry of Hers was: 'He never allowed me to fly. Never. Morning Glory threatened to break my wings if he caught me flying, so I never flew.

But a bird always flies for it is natural to her. And one day, I flew.

He was so angry, he ripped my feathers out with his teeth despite being a unicorn. He stamped upon what was left of my wings, and beat me one last time before retiring for the night.

I was in so much agony, I cried myself to sleep. I wanted to get back at him for doing that; I wanted to make him feel pain.

But for three weeks, I was unable to. In that period of time, I felt as if I wasn't myself.

I wore a cloak to hide my broken wings, and went and waited at the school's gates everyday, waited for the foals that never came.

One night, I got my revenge. I felt sorrow like I never had before, and when a spirit appeared before me asking if I wanted revenge, I said yes. That yes, I did.

So I let it take over me and lay in wait for Glory. When he entered the cottage, looking for me, I jumped out suddenly and bit his horn.

I pulled it out, and without missing a beat, began delivering punch after punch to his face.

He was screaming in pain, as I cackled in a voice unlike my own, "Payback time, darling."

His blood covered my hooves and the surrounding areas, and I finally slit his throat with a knife and watched him die.

I felt complete.

And then the spirit let me regain control, and upon seeing the sight, I gasped in horror.

I do not want to be sentenced to death, so I'm going to drown myself in the pond outside.'

During her time, it was common for the husband to forbid the wife from using their wings/horn/or earth pony strength.

This mare- Fluttershy, was forbidden from flying, but when she acccidentally flew, her husband- Morning Glory, he ripped her wings out.

She wanted revenge, so she let a spirit possess her and killed him.

But when she regained control of herself, she realized she did not want to be given a death sentence for murdering Glory, and drowned herself in the pond outside.

As this was her cottage, and the place of a murder and a suicide, many believed that Fluttershy haunts this place, and over time, this was what all ponies believed."

"...That's a tale alright," I say. "But I'm not one of those who believe in ghosts."

That very second, midnight struck and the mare sitting in front of me laughed. "You call it a tale, and yet it is true."

"What do you mean?"

"See this." In the light of the lamps, I saw that she was covered with blood and slime. Her pupils were slitted, and her wings were featherless and limp.

"You came here filly, and shall never leave. With your gift, that is."

Her voice was like that of a demons, compared to the soft tone it had before.

She came closer, and I saw she had fangs. Blood covered fangs. My senses kicked in, and I ran.

I tripped down the stairs, and fell into something wet.

I thought I may have pissed myself out of fear, but in the pale glow of the moonlight saw that it was blood. Shrieking, I turned to run, but what I saw right then made me lose all bladder control. Just inches from my face was the body of a dead stallion.

A rotting body. Blood was still oozing out from where his horn should be, and maggots were all over him, with some coming out of his mouth and bloated body.

I needed to get out of this place right now. But as soon as I reached the door, Fluttershy was in front of me. "No, no, darling," she said. "Don't you remember what I told you before? You're not gonna leave this place till I take your wings."

I was only able to watch in horror as she began jumping on my wings. While jumping she said, "Pegasus, you will never fly. Stretch your wings, or take off to the sky. Your wings are lost, and you shall stay below. You shall never fly again or see the clouds. To you the sky is now out of bounds."

She finally finished, and I ran out, crying as I did so. After that, I was never able to fly again.
