Moments That Brought Them Together
Chapter 9: Breeze at The HQ
Previous Chapter Next ChapterBreeze at The HQ
Soarin had just finished eating a lunch of a chicken salad, and was shamelessly looking for something to do. That he thought was interesting. They had had the day off, but him, Spitfire, Fleetfoot, and Wave Chill had done a short workout. Additional to the one Soarin had done before out of boredom and to keep in shape. As a Wonderbolt, he had to exercise well, and while normally the team had vigorous training for weeks at a time, they had finally convinced Spitfire to let them have a couple days off. Since they had just performed a bunch of shows, it was only fair before they had to start training and practicing for their next event.
“Alright, guys!” Spitfire called. The rest of the ‘Bolts were still eating lunch as they turned to their captain. Once she saw she had their attention, she continued. “I didn’t make you guys clean yesterday because Crash’s friend, Fluttershy, has a brother that needs a job and is going to do it today. Apparently he’s a bit of a slacker, so you know, don’t hesitate to put him in his place. But also don’t go to far... we don’t to gain a bad reputation over Crash trying to help a friend.” With that, she sat down in between Fleetfoot and Wave Chill, to which she didn’t notice the latter blushed a little.
Although Soarin knew Spitfire loved her leader role, he also knew she enjoyed the moment where she didn’t have to boss her teammates, or more importantly, friends, around.
“Hey, Spitfire, when’s Crash and the dude getting here?” Soarin asked, walking over to the table.
She took a bite of her sandwich. “Uh, I don’t know. Maybe ten minutes.”
“What’s his name?”
“Umm... I think it’s Breeze. Something Breeze.”
Fleetfoot, finished with her food, snickered. “Why, Soarin? Afraid he’s got her heart?”
Soarin sighed. Ever since he had realized his feelings for Dash, he had been extra careful not to talk about her, and when his friends brought the subject up, he had become overly defensive. No matter how well he tried to conceal it, his friends saw right through it. And it angered him that they did. “Hey, Fleet, I saw Lightning over there with some other mare, last night,” he quipped.
The look on her face deflated and she looked sadly at the flirt who had become the object of her affections recently. She didn’t bother with a comeback as she picked up her tray and walked away.
Wave Chill and Spitfire sent glares at him. “Come on Clipper, go apologize,” Wave Chill told him sternly.
Although Fleetfoot had a habit of teasing everypony, she truly meant no harm, and was actually very kind.
“She was bothering me too.”
“Yeah but she was just teasing. You meant to upset her,” Wave replied. He didn’t even notice Spitfire’s tender expression directed towards him at standing up for her very close friend.
Soarin sighed and nodded. “Yeah, yeah, alright. Guess I’m not in the best mood.” He walked away as the two ponies continued to talk. “Fleet?” he called. “Fleetfoot?”
He heard a locker bang shut, and figuring it was his friend, he went to the locker room, but bumped into a different pony. He was tall, skinny, with a light turquoise coat, pink eyes, and blonde hair up in some sort of bun. And what was he doing? Poking around in Rainbow Dash’s locker. Soarin stiffened, forgetting about Fleetfoot. “Excuse me, who are you?”
The stallion looked up. “Oh hello there! Are you one of them, uh, whatcha call it, ‘Wonderbolts’?”
“Yeah... um, why are you in Rainbow Dash’s locker?”
“Oh, well Rainbows has a job for me here, so she says. But I think she’s just tryna spend more time with me. She and I are... well,” he smirked and nudged Soarin, “we haven’t defined it. You know how mares are.”
Him and Rainbow Dash are a thing? How could she stand to be with somepony like him? He figured that was what had put him in a bad state of mind. The thought of Dash with somepony else made his stomach churn.
“Zephyr, what are you doing in my locker?” Rainbow Dash snapped, coming around the corner.
“Figured we might as well get to know each other better, Rainbows,” he replied, putting a hoof around her.
She gagged and pulled herself away from him. “You are here for a job.” She gritted her teeth in annoyance and began to push him out. “This way, Spitfire will tell you what to do.”
“Alright alright! No need to push Rainbows, we can hold hooves if you like, I am all yours,” Zephyr drawled out.
Soarin watched them go and saw her glance back giving him an apologetic look before rounding the corner. Deciding to talk to her later, Soarin continued his search for Fleetfoot.
He walked outside and saw his friend sitting on the stairs. He went and joined her. “Hi,” he said quietly.
“Oh, hey,” she muttered. It was a little hard to see his friend like this, usually she was energetic and cheerful. Well, not as cheerful as Surprise, but then again, no one was. Except for Pinkie Pie.
“Look Fleetfoot, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings, I guess I was just getting annoyed about the teasing about me and Rainbow,” Soarin apologized.
The white maned mare sighed and shook her head. “I know you didn’t mean it, it’s just a reminder that Lightning won’t ever feel the same way, you know?” she sniffed. “Gosh, we’re supposed to be level-headed Wonderbolts. I don’t know why I’m acting like this over some stallion.” She laughed a little.
“It’s alright. I guess emotions are normal for other ponies,” he replied and they both shared a chuckle. “Seriously, though. You’re a great friend and flyer. Lightning would be lucky to have you. And if he doesn’t see you that way then... his loss.”
Fleetfoot leaned on him. “Thanks, Clipper. And I’m sorry too, I only d it for fun...” She removed her head from his shoulder and stood up.
“Yeah. Well, I guess I was getting so defensive because...” he trailed off, not sure why he was admitting it to the pony who would tease I’m the most about it. “Because you were right. I do like Dash.” He hesitantly looked into his friend’s light purple eyes. “And I snapped at you because she’s coming with another guy. Her best friend’s brother. She’s known him her whole life, even though she seems annoyed by him, which makes sense, ‘cause he is annoying,” he ranted.
She only hook her head. “Soarin, I know. And don’t worry, I won’t tell her. As long as you do it within the next fifteen minutes.” She smirked.
Soarin’s jaw dropped. “What?” he sputtered.
She laughed. “I’m teasing Clipper. Anyways, I’m gonna go for a fly. Something about the stallion Crash brought in... he’s weird.”
“Yeah he was snooping through her locker, and I saw him in Rapid’s too.”
“Well sir, gives me more the reason to get out of here,” she said and saluted. “See ya later!”
Soarin waved goodbye and headed back inside towards the hallway where he ran into Spitfire. “Hey, Spitfire.”
She didn’t bother with a hello. “That brother of Fluttershy’s is a piece of work,” she muttered, “I feel bad for his family.”
“Should we send them an apology letter?” Soarin asked, tone slightly sarcastic. They both snickered.
“No, but I’ll tell Crash to send my sympathies to Fluttershy,” she responded and straightened. “Did you find Fleet?”
“Yeah. She was mainly upset about Lightning not returning her feelings more than she was mad at me. She took off to get away from Zephyr.”
Spitfire raised her eyebrows. “Wish I could follow her example,” she said. “I told him to clean the compound and then the mess hall, Crash is standing guard but can you go check? I’ll be there in a few.” She flew off, yellow wings flapping.
Soarin proceeded to walk back inside and into the mess hall where Zephyr was groaning and complaining while he lazily scrubbed a table.
“Oh come on, Zephyr! You have all the rest of these to go!”
“Hey Dash,” Soarin called, walking over to her.
She turned to face him and her annoyed expression disappeared. “Hiya Clipper, what’s up?”
Soarin felt proud that he was able to make his friend and the girl he liked frustrations go away, if not only for a moment.
He shrugged. “Not much... Fleetfoot both took off at the sight of this guy.” He pointed to the turquoise stallion who was washing the tables.
Dash chuckled. “Can’t blame em’ now can I?”
“Not exactly... “ he smirked, “Mind if I watch with you? Spit told me to until she got back.”
“Ugh, please, he’ll drive me insane otherwise.” She gave him a smile and Soarin ignored his racing heartbeat.
They stared while he scrubbed and after thirty long minutes, Rainbow and Soarin were discussing old Wonderbolt shows when Zephyr wailed, “Rainbows, I’m all finished! Now...” he furrowed his brow. “Uh, Rainbows, who is this? He bothering you?”
Dash rolled her eyes. “No, he isn’t. You are,” she muttered in a quiet voice.
“What was that Rainbows?” He pressed his face very close to hers and Soarin saw the flash of real discomfort on her face that lasted for barely a sixteenth of a second before it turned to pure annoyance. But Soarin had had it. He stepped closer to Rainbow and separated their faces with his wing, standing protectively in front of her. “She’s not interested,” he stated firmly.
Zephyr rolled his eyes, but nonetheless, he backed away. “Oh relax, I was just teasing, right Rainbows?”
Dash didn’t reply. “Alright Zeph, time to get moving on that cloud busting!”
Zephyr frowned. “Say what? I just cleaned all these tables.”
“Yeah, and now you’re gonna bust clouds.” She sent a glare at him.
He started to whine. “But Rainbows~”
“No ‘buts’ Mr. Breeze!” a loud voice yelled. Spitfire. For once, Soarin was grateful for her deafening and terrifying leader voice. She flew right up and stared him straight in the eye. “Listen Buster, we take our jobs very seriously. It is of the utmost importance that you do too so we can do ours. Since you clearly can’t listen to Rainbow Dash here without flirting, you’re gonna have me keeping an eye on you too!”
Zephyr looked terrified. “Uh...”
“What was that!?”
“Yes ma’am,” he managed.
“Great, follow me.” Spitfire flew out the door with a shaky Zephyr Breeze behind her.
Rainbow Dash walked to the window and watched as Zephyr began to clear the clouds away. “Clipper, you didn’t have to do that.”
Soarin went to join her. “Yeah, well, he didn’t seem to be taking the hint.”
“It’s been that way for a long time, I can handle myself. No biggie,” she replied as her magenta eyes followed Zephyr’s every move. “Seriously, when I was at Fluttershy’s for the first time when we were like, six, and as soon as he saw me, Zeph begged me to marry him.” She snickered at that.
“So you’ve been dealing with him for awhile?” Soarin asked and held in a chuckle as Spitfire continued yelling.
She sighed. “Unfortunately, yes. But like I said, I’ve pretty much gotten used to it. So really, no biggie.”
“And you don’t feel the same way he does?”
She cocked an eyebrow, wondering why he was curious. “Good god, no. Can’t stand him.
Soarin felt an overwhelming sense of relief at her confirmation. “Alright, I know,” he smiled at her. “You’re the great Rainbow Dash, of course you can handle yourself.”
She grinned back at him. “Thank you. And~” she glanced out the window and saw Zephyr sleeping while Spitfire was in the middle of talking to Lightning Streak. “Oh no, no no no,” Rainbow declared. “Gotta go Soar!” She zoomed out of the room and into the sky, which Soarin could see her bringing a black cloud right behind the sleeping stallion’s back.
She smiled wickedly, and with a strong and powerful kick, lightning shot out and zapped him right on the tail and through his body. Soarin watched in amusement as Zephyr was brought to life and was faced with Rainbow yelling at him. Zephyr took her anger until she was done, and proceeded to glare at everypony before yelling something and flying away.
Spitfire noticed and flew over to help Dash, who had started clearing the clouds herself. Deciding to spend more time with two of the most important ponies in his life, Soarin flew over. “Guess I’ll help you guys.”
“Sweet Celestia Crash, I didn’t know he was gonna be this much of a pain,” Spitfire groaned and kicked a cloud.
Dash rubbed her neck. “Sorry Captain.”
“It’s fine. Let’s just get this cleared up, I have some paperwork to do.”
Soarin cheered at this opportunity. “Hey Spit, it’s alright, I’ll help Crash. You go.”
She sent a knowing smirk in his direction and flew off, leaving the two. “You good, Crash?” he questioned casually.
“Yeah yeah. I just feel bad for Flutters I guess, I’ll go help her out later though.” There was some sort of longing in her voice that he couldn’t quite place.
“You’re a good friend,” he replied softly. Sensing his tone, Rainbow stopped what she was doing and looked at him. They simply stared for a few moments, and just like at the wedding and the restaurants and bars and game nights, it was just them again, Soarin forgetting everything he was, and he was just a pony with the mare he liked.
“Soarin... I... you’re a good friend too,” she answered, just as softly as he had. They both continued to look at each other and he could notice a light flush on her cheeks.
Oh my goodness, she’s blushing!
“Well, yeah, you’re a great pony.”
She smiled widely at that. But no cocky comment came from her lips as she gently set her hoof on his arm. Just, “And you, Mr. Clipper,” she said, tilting her head at him, “are one of the best I know.”
