Raining Sparks
Chapter 1: Raining Sparks Ch. 1
Raining Sparks - Ch. 1
It was a beautiful day in Ponyville; the Pegasus ponies had tried their hardest to keep the skies clear today. Despite the ominous storm clouds that seemed to be looming over the Everfree Forest these last few days. It was the kind of day where everypony was outside doing something or another, everypony except Twilight Sparkle. Twilight decided to take the day to catch up on some studying she has been behind on.
She was upstairs in her room at the library scanning a copy of "Thinking With Portals" her horn aglow and speaking out loud as a quill surrounded by a purple glow moved on its own across a parchment.
"The study of portals." She began. "We can see through the study of momentum how portals affect momentum, or more specifically, how they do not."
Twilight was alone in her room, normally her dragon assistant Spike would be nearby cleaning or organizing the library but Twilight let him have the day off since it was so nice outside, and he has not really had much time to go out and socialize, what with keeping the library clean and all.
"Momentum" She continued. "A function of mass and velocity, is conserved between portals, in layman's terms, spee-"
She was cut off by a loud THUD that came from downstairs in the library, followed by what sounded like a series of books falling off their shelves and landing on the floor with a loud thud.
Startled by the sudden noises she dropped her quill to the floor and looked around her room confused. "What the hay was that?" She asked. Although, due to her time in Ponyville she had a pretty good Idea of what made the noise.
She let out an annoyed sigh then her horn glowed purple for a split second and she disappeared from the room in a purple flash.
She reappeared in the downstairs in the library at the bottom of the stairs, and scanned the room a few moments and found the source of the sounds. As she suspected, under a large pile of books she saw a rainbow-colored tail fidgeting on the ground.
"Rainbow?" Twilight asked? "Rainbow Dash are you alright over there?"
The books fell aside and a cyan colored Pegasus pony with a beautiful rainbow-colored mane sprouted to her hooves.
Heh heh, yeah I'm okay. She said offering an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that, I was practicing a new move and well, wind resistance can be a nuisance."
Twilight sighed.
"Why is it every time you try a new move you end up on my floor covered in books, and by some feat of Celestia, completely unharmed each time?"
"I dunno." Rainbow said with a smug grin.
Twilight sighed once more. The more she thought about it, the more she decided it would be best just to leave it at that.
"Well, could ya at least help me clean this mess up?" She said trying not to sound aggravated.
"Sure!" Rainbow Dash gleamed. "With me here, we'll have this mess gone in a jiffy!"
Twilight levitated some books up to their spots on the shelf and Rainbow, struggling to lift more than one at a time and place it upon the shelf. Her being a Pegasus and all, she lacked the horn unicorns possessed for their mysterious magic.
"Well this isn't so bad." Twilight thought. "Now that I think about it, I haven't actually seen much of Rainbow Dash lately so this is a welcome change of pace." Twilight sat there for a few moments before realizing she was staring at Rainbow Dash, who in turn, was staring back at her confused.
"Uhh, Twilight. You okay? You're kinda staring at me."
"Huh? Oh! Yeah… sorry, I got a little lost in thought there for a second."
"Yeah I noticed, what were you thinking about anyway?"
Twilight Paused for a moment.
"Oh nothing, just something I was reading in a book earlier."
"Oh, Twilight you're such an egghead."
Twilight opened her mouth to retort but was cut off by the Library door opening to reveal Spike standing there with a look of disappointment covering his usually cheerful face.
"Oh hi Spike! Is something the matt-" Twilight started. But was quickly cut off by Spike giving an annoyed huff before slamming the door and leaving.
"Uhhh I don't think he was too happy about the Library Twi."
"Oh he'll come around, although I can't say I blame him, he has worked hard the last few days helping me reshelf the books and everything."
"Yeah…" Rainbow said nervously. "Sorry about that."
"Like I said its fine, he will come around. Spike can be somewhat of a little filly sometimes."
The two shared a laugh for a few moments before returning to the cleaning. It didn't take very long for the library to get back to normal. They had cleaned the remainder of the mess in almost complete silence. Eventually Twilight took it upon herself to break the annoying silence.
"Sooo Rainbow..." She started. "Exactly what new trick were you trying this time anyway?"
Rainbow Dash's expression fell.
"Well…it wasn't actually a new trick, I've been trying to do the Sonic Rainboom."
"The Sonic Rainboom?" I thought you could do those in your sleep by now."
"Yeah so did I, for a while I could do them whenever I wanted, but now…" Rainbow trailed off.
Twilight frowned. "Why do you think you can't do it anymore? Did you get hurt or something recently?"
"Nothing I can think of, a few crashes here and there but nothing serious."
"Hmm…." Twilight continued. "Is there something bothering you maybe?"
"Well, honestly, maybe. I get sooo close to doing it, but every time now, for some reason, I lose my train of thought, and get distracted. Then I end up being flung back by the air and well…" Rainbow trailed off again.
"Why do you keep losing your train of thought? What could you be thinking about during a situation like that other than actually doing the Sonic Rainboom?"
"OH well actually…it's uhh… you know what? I think I hear my laundry calling, I'm just gonna go! See ya!"
Twilight was still off in thought before she realized what Rainbow said during her sudden outburst. She saw her just in time to notice that her face was as red as the streak through her rainbow mane.
"Wait Rainbow, wha-"
But it was too late, Rainbow had already left out the window leaving only a rainbow streak following behind her. Twilight fell back, completely dumbfounded.
"What was that all about, it's not like her to be that…weird?"
Twilight decided to work it out later and headed back upstairs to continue her studies.
"Ahh…" She sighed.
"Now where was I? Oh right!"
Her horn began to glow again as she picked up the quill to continue where she had left off. She began writing but quickly sat the quill back down. For some reason she didn't really feel like studying anymore, instead she just sat in her room alone thinking about her conversation with Rainbow Dash. "Why was that pony acting so strange?" She thought. "It's not like her to be so skittish; it's just not in her nature…" She fell back and let out an exasperated sigh.
Twilight sat in silence for a few moments. "Maybe I am just thinking too hard about this, I should go out and get something to eat?" She finally said. "Yeah, that ought to do the trick I can always think better on a full stomach." She said with a smile as she came to her hooves, her horn glowed purple again for a few seconds and she disappeared into thin air again.
