For hundreds of years the kobolds have been colonizing space -- arriving in a system, rapidly building up a technological civilization, and using it to fire seed colonies at new stars that look promising.

Equestria looked very promising, until they arrived and found that people were already living there. People like Luna, with her incomprehensible magical powers (logging on to their network using magic is incomprehensible enough without *moving the moon*) and political control of an established nation or possibly two depending on how you count the Nyx. You probably shouldn't count the Nyx.

Kobold visual design was inspired by the protogen... almost everything else was inspired by D+D though. And an old story I wrote about otters in space that involved zero ponies. And the dungeon core genre. And Furtoonia. It's not a crossover with any of those though (in particular the linked stories are not actually in the same universe and couldn't really be).
