World at War: Protectors of Harmony
Chapter 5: Interspecies Friendship
Previous Chapter Next ChapterI walked in with Reed helped me carrying Wade into the shack. The ponies looked at us and saw the blood dripping from Wade's left arm.
"Oh dear." Rarity said while putting a hoof on her mouth.
"Put him down here." I ordered to Reed. Both of us lay down the wounded soldier and quickly inspects his wound.
"Got any bandages?" Reed asked.
"Who am I, a medic?" I said.
"Dang it."
"What happened to him?" Twilight suddenly asked right next to me. I sighed and looked at her.
"He got shot."
"Shot?" Rainbow asked while hoovering in the air. The ponies looked at Wade with worried looks. They seemed like haven't seen anything like this before.
"It's a long story," I said, "Right now I have to find something that could patch the wound." I stood up and looked around.
"I demand an explanation after this." Reed said as he stand up too. I nod at him and began to walk around the room. I walked over to the shelf and opened it. Dust quickly came out from it, making me cough several times and closes my nose and mouth. As my vision's clear, I notice some shirts were hanging in it.
"This should do it." I said as I grab the shirt out of its place.
"Ya sure about that?" Reed suddenly asked next to me. "It's dusty. Probably will infected the wound even worse."
"Why won't you keep the pressure on the wound, Private." I asked.
"Right... sorry." Reed quickly ran to Wade, who is still unconscious and press his hand to his arm. I looked at the shirt, then back to the shelf. Reed's right, there's no fucking way I can wrap this thing on his wound. Twilight seemed to notice my concern and quickly offered a help.
"I can handle it." Twilight said as she levitate the shirt from my hand. Me and Reed watched with wide eyes as she trotted off to the door and went outside; the shirt was floating in front of her.
"What was that?" Reed asked, still looking at the door.
"No idea." I replied.
"It's magic, darling." Rarity said.
"Magic?" Reed asked. I still have no idea how he could cope with this since I saw his expression at the first place.
"Here you go!" Twilight said as she walked in to the room with the shirt still floating with her. She then give me the shirt and I inspect it. No dust, it's clean. As if you're already bought from a store several minutes ago.
"How did you..."
"Magic." Reed simply said. I put the thoughts away from my mind and quickly tear up the shirt. I walked to Wade and quickly wrap his arm with the shirt. He winced at the pain but still remain asleep.
"All right," I said as I let out a sigh, "He's good. We just need to get back to the others so the medics will fix him."
"Aye aye." Reed replied.
"Reed, help me block the door." I said as I pulled a couch and placed it at the door. Blocking it.
"We should do night shift if we're gonna stay here for the night," Reed suggest, "Those gun fires will probably alert more of them and they will come and search for us."
"You take some rest, Private," I replied and sat on the couch, "I'm gonna do the night guard."
"Alone? Hell no, you're not doing it alone."
"You're my responsibility, Reed. All of you." I looked at the ponies. They seemed to be shocked at my statement. "It's my duty to keep you safe. To make sure you're going home in one piece."
Reed just stared at me as I stared back. He let out a sigh and slumped against the wall. "Sometimes, I just wish you'd take my advice."
"You know who I am." I chuckle.
"At least you're still the Parker I know." He chuckle not long enough as it replaced by a frown. "You still owe me an explanation about this." He looked at the ponies.
"All right," I said with a smile, "Private Cody Reed, meet these friends of mine." I pointed at them one by one while saying their names. "Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, and that little dragon, is Spike."
They nod slightly at Reed, which is still confused. "They have names?" I nod. "Well, pleasure to meet you, I'm Private First Class Cody Reed. You can call me Reed."
Just then, we heard a groaning sound. I looked at Wade, he's now back to his consciousness. "Good to have you back, Corporal." I said with a chuckle.
"The fuck just happened?" He held his head with a hand but winced as he felt the pain coming from his arm.
"You just passed out when you heard some horses-" Reed was cut off by Twilight.
"Ponies."
"Right... sorry. You just passed out when you heard some ponies could spoke." He continued.
"Animals can't talk." He said as he sit up. But then, his eyes fixed on the ponies that's sitting around me.
"Howdy partner," Applejack tipped her hat.
Wade blinked his eyes, then looked at me. "Can you tell me about this?"
I sighed. "All right. Ponies, let me introduce you with..." And just like that, we all blend with one another pretty fast. Wade still can't cope up but Rainbow manage to calm him down. Poor guy, he really didn't believe the event that we're facing with.
It's not long enough for us to talk until I eventually yawned. I closed my mouth with a hand and looked outside from the window. It's dark, probably seven in the evening; no clock in the room though.
"All right," I said, getting their attention, "I think we can call it a night."
Reed shrugged but quickly lay down on his back and closed his eyes while crossing his arms. "Wake me up if there are any Krauts."
"I will." I replied. Wade quickly joined Reed as he lay down while facing the wall.
"Have we ever told you how awesome you are, Sarge?" He asked not looking at me.
"Dozens." I simply replied. I then looked at the ponies. All of them are trying to get into a comfortable position on the floor. It was rude of me for sitting on the couch all by myself, so I decide to join them on the floor. Placing my Thompson on my lap, I leaned against the wooden wall.
"Would be better if the light's off." Reed suddenly said, which I oblige. I stood up and reached the oil lamp and then I blew the fire off. The ponies let out a small whimper as the room gets suddenly dark.
"Don't worry ponies," I chuckle while walking back to my spot, "I'm here when you need me."
"Say what you want Sarge, you're gonna sleep anyway." Reed said sarcastically.
"Will you please just shut up and sleep already?" I asked, annoyed.
"I'll see you tomorrow then."
With that, the room fell into another silence. A blissful one. It wasn't cold in the room though, it's warm. So I don't have to wrap these ponies with blanket or whatever I could find in this room to keep them warm. I slumped back against the wall, and it's not long enough before I heard snoring noises. All of them must've been asleep. Especially the soldiers. We're all tired after running from those Germans from morning. I'm still curious about these ponies though. How the hell they would get back home? Are these guys my responsibility now? Are they gonna be here like... forever? So many thoughts ran through my mind. These ponies have no idea what they're dealing with. Hopefully they know about war so they could survive this easily. Also, how the heck am I gonna explain this to the General? And the Lieutenant? I saw Wade and Reed reaction, and I don't know how the hell they would react when they saw these ponies could talk. I just wish there were no arguments about this. I find them. Simple as that. They're my responsibility, and my platoon. If they want to. I wonder how's my platoon doing? We seperated when we got freaking bombarded by the artilleries. The Germans already know we're coming.
The dark room only makes my eyes more heavier. But I couldn't sleep now, I must stay on guard and hear if anything is outside. I'm just afraid those Krauts will be back. Gladly, only the singing of crickets could be heard. It's almost feels like we're in a mountain. With no war, no fight, no worry. I just hope that-
"Umm... excuse me, Parker?" Yep, other than that, I could heard some shivering noise. I looked at the sound and saw two big purple adorable eyes staring at me. Albeit, sleepy.
"Yeah Twilight?" I asked.
"I'm a little bit... cold..." She said with a yawn escaped from her mouth. I chuckle and put my weapon next to me.
"You can lay on my lap here if you want." I said. I couldn't help but curious about what these beings feels like. She hesitantly walked closer to me, but then crawls up onto my lap and curls like a cat. Damn, it's so adorable! I wrap her in my arms. My body heat seems to be working as she lets out a sigh of delight and closed her eyes. I put a hand and stroke it gently to her mane. It's incredibly soft.
"Parker?" She breaks me out of my thoughts, yet again.
"Yeah?"
"What is this?" She asked while pointing a hoof to my weapon. Though, I could barely see through the dark but still, the full moon provides the room some more light.
"It's a gun."
"A gun?"
"Yep," I looked at her, those adorable purple eyes met mine, "A gun, it's a weapon from which bullets or shell are fired through the metal tube." I pointed at the gun barrel. She looked at it while tilting her head.
"Why are you using this?"
Smart pony she is. "If we're being honest, we used it to kill something."
She gasped and quickly turned her attention back to me. "Why would you kill something?"
"The simple answer is, we are at war, Twilight."
I can tell this expression. Fear. She's looking at me as if I'm going to hurt her. Bad. "War? You're killing your own species? I thought you're a good person."
"It's all right. I'm not going to hurt you." I hugged her close even more.
"But why do you want a war?" Her voice is trembling.
"I don't," I replied, "Believe me Twilight, war isn't something that I want to see. I just did this because I had to do... and a part of me wants to see the world too. But this is what I get." I release the hug and looked at her straight in the eyes. "It seems like your world haven't fought in any war before?"
She shook her head. "No. Well... yes. But the war had over hundreds of years ago. We didn't have any war since then."
"So you didn't expect to see this coming."
She shook her head again. "I'm... scared..."
I smiled and put a hand under her chin. "Please... don't be afraid Twilight. I promise to keep you safe until you're able to get back home. No matter the risk is. If I had to die protecting you, then so be it. If that's the last thing I'm gonna do. I'll be always by your side when you're here. I'll protect you, and your friends."
She looked at me, I guess those fears have been washed away from her. "You promise?"
"I will." I hugged her close again, which she returned. "So does that means we're friends now, right?" I asked playfully.
She chuckles warmly. "Yeah..." Then, a yawn escaped from her mouth. I release the hug and put her back on my lap.
"You should get some sleep. Cause tomorrow's gonna be a long day. And don't worry, I'll be here when you wake up."
She chuckles again and rest her chin on my arm. I continue to stroke her mane until she falls asleep. I looked at the rest of the ponies. They all seemed to be in the land of dreams. They really don't know what will happen. They haven't experienced war yet. How will they survive this? I guess it depends on me. These folks are my responsibility. And I will do anything to keep them safe.
Tomorrow we'll get out of here and regroup with the others. I don't know what will the whole division would react though, but that doesn't matter to me. All it matters is that I have to keep them safe. No one will hurt them, no one will make fun of them. They have to pass this body first before doing it.
I looked up at the ceiling while letting out a sigh. "Lord, please give me more strength. For I am the new protector of these innocent little ponies." I looked back down to Twilight. Her breathing is steady and a smile plastered on her face. She seems in a wonderful dream. I smile, still stroking her soft mane. She's so cute when she's sleep. Reminds me of my cat back home.
"There's a lot of things that you need to know Twilight. I hope you'll be ready for what might come."
