Chapter 2: Ambushed

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The roar of a jeep fills the air while the three men inside do their best to stay alive. As the jeep crested the hill it caught a fair amount of air as it jumped the bump in the old dirt road. Coming down with a powerful thud, the three passengers jerk violently as the jeep began to regain control.

"DIE YOU KRAUT BASTARDS!!" Screamed the gunner as he opened fire with the massive Browning .50 BMG.

"WHERE THE HELL DID THEY COME FROM?!" Screamed the driver.

"JUST SHUT UP AND DRIVE!!" Ordered the passenger. And the passenger, is me.

As the jeep and panicking men race through the forest, Nazi troops begin to funnel out of the tree line. The only things we can rely on are the speed of the Willy's jeep, and the cover fire being provided by the gunner.

The three soldiers are as follows,

The driver, Corporal Wade Charles, a 21 year old from San Francisco, California. A college dropout, he decided to join the 101st Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He started in Africa and has survived through everything, even the D-Day landing. The kid's smart and knows his way around a gun, hell, he's even the squad's best sharpshooter, he stole an M1903 scoped Springfield rifle from a dead trooper and has been using ever since. He's a crack shot at 550 yards.

Me, the passenger, Sergeant Daniel Parker, a 20 year old from Richmond, Virginia. I joined the 101st Division, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment in the early 1943. Yet I survived the D-Day too, I rose through the ranks and became a Sergeant just after the invasion of Sicily. I was a former wood worker and decided that I wanted to see the world. And this is what I get.

The gunner, Private First Class Cody Reed, same like Wade, a 21 year old from Deadwood, South Dakota; fortunately for him, he missed the D-Day landing by a day, but he was soon placed with his new squad. He's eager and gung-ho to fight, but been a new kid, he hasn't experienced combat like me and Wade does. But right now he's the only one that can keep us goddamn alive. As of right now, we have driven right into the heart of a fucking entire Nazi division.

"ARMORED CAR!!" Screamed Reed from behind me.

"LIGHT IT UP!!" I ordered while reloading my gun.

Reed immediately pointed the massive machine gun and unloaded on the Nazi armored car. Of course it wouldn't penetrate it, but we desperately fighting for our lives now. The massive vehicle retaliated by firing on us, but by some miracle, the German gunner missed every shot. Wade pressed on the gas trying to get every ounce of power out of the jeep. Bullets wiz over our heads, but by some miracle, we kept on going.

"FUCK!! FUCK!! FUCK!!" Reed screamed while shooting at the armored car.

"IN THE TREE LINE!!" Wade shouted. Then, multiple Nazi troops pour out and making a line in front of our jeep.

"I GOT 'EM!!" I shouted while shouldered my Thompson and fired at every soldier I could get in my sight. Honestly, I didn't rely on accuracy, I just shoot the living hell out of them to keep us alive. We continued to race down the old dirt road as the massive armored car still chasing and firing at us. We didn't know where the hell are we. But we know for sure, that we were miles from the nearest reinforcements and now were surrounded on all sides by Nazi soldiers. God help us.

"PANZER!!" Reed screamed as he looked at the massive tank.

The beast came out from the tree line right in front of us and blocking our path. His turret slowly turning to the jeep and we just watched as the gun pointed on us. Before I saw the tank, I could saw a small path into the forest on the right just a couple of meters away before the panzer. Without a second thought, my left hand took control of the steering wheel and quickly jerked it to the right. Wade wasn't expecting this, his hands move on it's own accord and just accepted the movement. Reed stopped firing while he leaned over to the machine gun in an attempt not to fall off of the vehicle.

"WATCH IT YOU SHITHEAD!!" He shouted to me as he went back to his original stance and started shooting again.

"SHUT THE FUCK UP AND KEEP SHOOTING!!" I shouted back. The panzer seemed not to notice this as it fired a single shell and hit the armored car that is still chasing behind us. Making it explode and stopped the pursuit.

"WHOOO HOOO!!" Wade shouted in glee as he looked back. But the cheer soon died as we swarmed by another rain of bullets.

I could hear Reed grumbled something while he continued to swivel the machine gun left and right. The massive .50 caliber rounds blew holes in the dirt path and any unfortunate trees, sending small pieces of branches in all directions. Those that connected with bodies tore through the flesh, thus bringing the attacker to their knees, and ultimately… the ground.

The jeep continue to run with it's maximum speed as now the panzer behind us, cutting down the trees that are on it's way and continue to shoot us with it's machine gun. I reload my gun as quickly as I could and continue to shoot to anywhere I could predict the enemies were. The dirt road is coming to an end, we could saw it right in front of us. All it's left is a bush.

"SHIT!! WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TRACK!!" Wade shouted while Reed continued to fire at the tank.

"JUST GO THROUGH IT!!" I shouted back while looking behind. The Nazi still shooting at us while Reed fought all of the troops. Even the panzer itself.

"FUCK!!" Reed shrieked, "YA BETTER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!"

"HOLD ON!!" Wade shouted, getting both me and Reed's attention. When I looked back to the front, we were going to go through the massive bush.

"THE HELL DUDE?!" I shouted while gripping the door and my Thompson tightly.

"REED, YA BETTER HOLD ON TO SOMETHING!!" Wade shouted again.

Grabbing his M1 Garand, Reed immediately ducked down and hold on for dear life. The jeep then went through the bush and the inevitable happened. Behind it, there's a slope. With the lack of trees and bushes but still, the track is bumpy and uncomfortable and we were running down the slope. Dang, how I missed asphalt so much.

"SHIT!!" Reed shrieked from behind us. The jeep bumped here and there while we were just driving forward and let the slope lead us to it's destination. Forest. We saw another forest in front of us. Great.

"DUDE!! WATCH OUT!!" I shouted while pointing at a huge trunk laying on the ground. Wade though, didn't see this and he had no time to react. Our right front tire then hit the massive trunk, sending us flying to the air. The jeep flew four feet from the ground and when it hit the ground, the three of us got thrown off from the vehicle and now were rolling until the end of the slope, along with the jeep. We rolled and rolled until I stopped when the back of my head hit against a tree trunk. That's when my vision blacked out.

~

"Parker?"

"Shit! He's not waking up!"

"He's breathing dammit! Parker, can you hear me?"

"Dammit! Parker, can you hear us?!"

"INCOMING!!"

I groaned as I started to regain my vision. My eyes are blurry and all of my body is in pain. I felt myself being dragged and heard explosions everywhere.

"THEY GOT US ZEROED IN!!" I heard Reed shrieked from behind me. He must've dragged me. "THOSE BASTARDS WON'T LET US ESCAPE!!"

"KRAUTS INCOMING!!" Wade shouted. Then, I heard lots of gun fire in front of me. I held my head and let out another groan. I tried my best to regain my vision. I stretched out my hands to try to reach my Thompson and I did it. When I grabbed it, I put it on my lap and tried my best to returning my composure.

"DAMMIT, SARGE!! GET UP!!" Reed shouted to my ear. I winced and immediately covered my left ear. After my vision's clear, I saw the Nazi troops shooting at us while Wade tried his best to hold them. "COME ON!!" Reed shouted again. "GET UP, GET UP, GET UP!!" He helped me to get into my feet as I leaned on his shoulder for balance. "WE GOTTA RUN!! WADE COME ON!! GET THE FUCK OUTTA THERE!!" I shook my head to clear my vision one last time and nod at Reed. Confirming him that I was okay. He let go of me and looked at Wade.

Wade looked back at us and nodded. He shoots until his last bullet and when the time comes to reloading, he immediately joined us and run from the enemies; deeper into the forest. Explosions causes the dirt to fly everywhere while trees fall after they got hit. I don't know how the hell we manage to survive that but we continue to run as fast as our feet could get. Another big explosion behind me caused me to stumble forward, but I quickly regain my balance and started to run again.

"SHIT!!" Reed shouted through the explosions. We run for what felt like eternity to us, but then the barrage suddenly stopped.

"Wait!" I stopped, followed by my other two friends. They turned their gaze to me.

"What is it?!" Reed replied, panting heavily.

"It stopped." I simply said as I looked to the sky.

Wade and Reed followed my gaze as they looked up. Yeah, the barrage did stop. Only the sound of chirping birds and rustling of the leaves that could be heard around us. Finally, so that means...

"Uh oh," I said, still looking up.

"What?" Wade asked and looked at me.

"If the barrage stopped... that means-" I couldn't finish my words as I heard talkings behind me. They weren't English, of course. We're still being chased by an entire Nazis. "We need to get out of here, now!" I whispered to them. They nod and we immediately run forward as quietly as possible. Leaving the German troops behind.

~

We don't know how long we've been walking in the forest. But we could see the sun was now setting on the horizon. The day will turn to it's dark mode soon. At least the Germans haven't find us, yet. Luckily for us, we found an old dirt path and we decided to follow it.

"Hey," Wade started, breaking the silence, "We're pretty fucked up back there."

"Well, we lost ten men already." I replied with a sigh.

"Damn those artilleries," Reed said, "If it weren't for them, they maybe still alive by now."

"Hey guys, I think the forest is about to end," Wade said as he pointed at a light in front of us.

Me and Reed looked forward and saw the dirt path going straight to the light. I smiled as I quicken my pace. The others followed with smiles on their faces too. But when we got closer, I stopped and raised my hand to a halt position. The three of us crouched down while gripping our weapons tight.

"Stay low," I whispered. They nod and we proceed moving forward. That's when I saw a small shack in front of us, with multiple Nazi soldiers on it's lawn were talking to each other. I looked back at the other two, who are wearing the same expression as I am. Serious, yet nervous at the same time.

"All right," I began, "We need to eliminate all of them."

"What? Are you nuts?" Wade almost shrieked at my order. "We're only three of us."

"And they were ten of them." Reed added as he counted all of them.

I sighed. "I know, but we need a place to stay and this is the only place we could find. I believe there's no one else lived at the end of this forest." They both paused for a moment. "So are you with me or not?"

Reed and Wade looked at each other before nodding.

"All right," Wade said as he looked back at me, "But I need to find a perfect spot for my sniper here."

"That should do it." I said as I pointed to a tree. But, instead of the ground, I pointed it at the top. Wade looked at me with confusion.

"Are you saying that I-"

"Don't lie to me," I said, "I know you're a good climber."

He sighed before nodding. "All right. But this better be work."

I nod. "I'm sure this will work. Besides, the signal is when you fire the first shot."

"Me?"

"Yeah, after that, me and Reed will get up from this bush and spray them with bullets."

"That's not a bad idea." Reed said.

"All right," I gripped my Thompson and looked at the grey soldiers, "Let's send these guys straight to hell."

With that, Wade immediately walked to the tree I told him to be and climbed it with ease. Me and Reed just watch in awe as he climbed the tree and sat on one of the branches within ten seconds.

"No wonder you like monkeys," teases Reed.

"Shut the fuck up." He replied sternly.

We both chuckle and looked back at our targets. All of them didn't seem to notice us. This is gonna be easy. I looked at Wade, who is looking through his scope and ready to take the first shot. I turned my gaze to Reed, who is gripping tightly his M1 Garand with a smirk on his face.

"They don't know what will come," he whispers.

"I know," I return the smirk and looked back at them. A few moments of waiting, finally Wade took the first shot.

BANG!

A helmet could be seen thrown off from the head of an unfortunate soldier. Blood spurts from his head as he quickly dropped to the ground. The other soldiers looked at their teammate, but before they could react, me and Reed suddenly appeared from the bush while pointing our gun at them. Without warning, we both fired relentlessly at the soldiers; whilst screaming. I could heard the marksman fired his sniper behind us and one by one all of them dropped to the ground.

"Cease fire!" I shouted as all the German soldiers were on the ground; didn't move. I walked closer to the dead bodies and crouched down to check the pulse. I got up as I'm sure they're all dead and looked back at Reed. "Let's get these bodies to the bushes. I don't want to get ambushed again by those Germans." He nod and quickly helped me carrying the dead. Wade came out from the tree line and immediately helped us with it. It only took a few minutes to hide them from sight of any passer-by.

"We should check the shack," Reed said as he and me threw a dead body, "I think it's not safe. Someone's probably hiding in there."

Wade let out a chuckle. "Reed, if they were in there, they should've come out when they heard the fight."

Reed grabbed his weapon and looked at the corporal. "Yeah, maybe you're right."

"All right folks," I said while clapping my hands, "Tomorrow morning, we'll be out of here and regroup with the others."

"And how are we suppose to know where they are?" Wade asked.

"That's why we'll be going at dawn."

Reed shrugged. "All right. Damn, I need to take some rest."

"Me too." I replied while walking back to the small shack, followed by my friends. Once we were at the door, I gripped my Thompson with my right hand while the other grabbing the doorknob. I took a deep breath before looking at the others, who are pointing their weapons towards the door.

"Watch my back."
