Chapter 10: The Letter

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Author's Notes:

So, after taking some time to made up my mind, I finally concluded that I will make this story from all perspectives. From the first, second, and third person. I just have to know to use it when the time's right.

On going chapter: The Battle for Carentan.

"Hey, Fluttershy," I said while shaking the yellow pegasus gently, "It's time to wake up."

She squirmed a bit before opening her eyes and let out a yawn. "Are we there yet?" She asked quietly.

I smiled and stroke her mane. "We're almost there Shy. Better keep your guard up." She leaned onto my hand while letting out a hum. I chuckled. These ponies can be cute sometimes. After waking the rest of the ponies, I walked back to my seat just in time when Blake spoke up about the plan.

"All right ladies, listen up," Blake said as he stood up, "Carentan is just a few kilometres away. We're going to stop and wait until midnight. Our job is to guard the right flank along the upper Douve River and then, we force the bridges and capture high ground southwest of the town along the Périers highway to block withdrawal. Any questions?"

"Hill 30?" I asked.

"That's right." Blake nodded.

"Do we have any armour support?" Reed asked.

Blake shook his head as he sat down. "Sadly we don't. We're gonna have to do this by ourselves."

"Dang it." Andrew mumbled.

"I assume that the 327th GIR will be taking the left side?" Glenn asked. Blake only nodded in response. "Well, it's a double envelopment then."

Then, the truck came to a stop and the driver shouted from the front. "All right, this is it. Good luck on the battlefield boys!"

"Wait, you're not coming?" Rainbow asked while rubbing her eyes.

The driver shook his head. "Nope, had more jobs to do at base."

"Come on Rainbow." I said while gesturing her to follow.

"We're going to wait until midnight?!" Wade asked as he realized the conversation.

"That's right Corporal," Blake replied, "Now get your asses moving." I jumped off the truck with the ponies followed behind me. Other soldiers too began to disembarked from the vehicles and started to talk one another.

"Let's go over by that hill." Blake said as he pointed to a hill with trees and bushes that plenty enough to hide us from sight. "Some rest won't hurt."

~

"All right, Parker, Glenn, I need you guys to do reconnaissance." Blake said as he peeked his head from the bush to see the town."

"You said we're going to take some rest." I raised an eyebrow.

"Better to scout first before engaging the enemy line," Blake replied while looking at me, "Stick to your training, and you'll make it."

"You know I'm a Sergeant." I replied with a frown.

"All right, all right folks," Glenn said as he stood up, "Come on Sarge, Paris is waiting for us."

"Hell right." I was about to stood up when a hoof stopped me. A purple hoof rest on my thigh as I looked at Twilight.

"Let me come with you." She said with trembling voice.

"Twi, what the hay are ya thinkin'?" Applejack asked.

"This is their duty, not yours!" Rainbow said.

I sighed and knelt down. "Twilight, you don't have to if you're afraid."

She took a deep breath before spoke up, "I'm not afraid... I'm just... want to get used to this."

"Twilight, you can't."

"We're running out of time here." Blake suddenly said, which made glare at him.

"Could you please just shut the fuck up for a moment?" He shrugged as he looked at the town again. "Twilight..." I turned to look at her and was greeted by those adorable puppy dog eyes.

"Please..." She pleaded, her lower lip was trembling.

"If you don't mind, Princesses." I looked at Celestia, who smiled and nod.

"Please, take care of her." She said, but with an uncomfortable tone.

I nod as I stood up. "You know I will. Come on Twilight. Stay close to me." She nodded vigorously and quickly followed me and Glenn onto the river.

~

"I think that one house is definitely something." I said while pointing at one of the houses.

"I think so too, Sarge," Glenn replied, "I think you see what I'm seeing." He then looked at the sky. "It's almost dark, we should get back." He said as he looked back forward at the town. We're hiding behind a huge trunk on the high ground but the view is good enough for us to see half of the town.

I noticed my hands were trembling again. I sighed as I held it with my other hand, but to no avail.

"Are you okay?" Twilight suddenly asked, making me look at her.

"I'm fine, it was like this before we move on." I replied.

"I don't see any enemies." She said as she looked around.

"They're not on our sight yet," Glenn replied, "When midnight comes, they must've been prepared for what might come. Don't you see a black thing on that window over there Twilight?" He asked as he pointed at the house that me and him mentioned earlier.

Twilight immediately looked at it and focusing her eyes. "Yeah," she replied after awhile, "It seems weird though."

"It really is, cause that's a Pak 40 hiding inside." I said while looking at it. These Germans were seriously defending this town. "These Krauts haven't learned about sneaking huh?"

"Guess they were just too cocky about this." Glenn replied with a smirk.

"Pak 40?" Twilight asked.

"I'll tell you later Twi. For now, let's head back to the others." I said as I stood up. Glenn and Twilight followed me as we walked back to our friends.

~

"How's it going?" Blake said as he saw us approaching them.

I took my helmet off and let it slipped out of my hand as I sat down, my back against a tree. "A Pak 40 is located on one of the houses. Other than that, I assume they must've placed an MG emplacement now and then."

"They must have." Andrew said, sitting next to Applejack and Rarity.

"Spike can you breathe fire?" I asked, suddenly a plan came into my mind.

"Uhh... let me just..." He took a deep breath before letting a small green fire coming out from his mouth. "I don't think I can..." He said in embarrassment.

I pat his shoulder and gave him my support. "I think you can Spike. In fact, your fire is good enough to scared the living shit out of them."

"Really?" Spike asked, his eyes full of hope.

I chuckled and playfully punch him. "Of course you are. Tell you what, you're gonna be my second from now on."

Reed cleared his throat to get my attention. I looked at him and his face was telling to 'don't do it' expression. I raised an eyebrow, frowned and ignore him. "Is that a deal?"

"Deal." The little dragon said with confidence. I offered him a fist bump which he happily accepted. Twilight smiled at us when we laughed at each other.

"Hey new guy!" Wade called out Steve's replacement, who was standing behind a bush and looked up at the sky. He quickly turned his gaze towards Wade.

"Yeah?"

"Come here." Wade said as he waved his hand, gesturing him to come and have some talk. He walked slowly to us and sat down next to Blake.

"What's your name?" I asked, beginning the conversation.

"Matthew... Sir." He replied.

"Have you been through war before?" Reed asked. He shook his head.

"So this is your first time then?" Andrew asked while taking his glasses off and put it in his pocket.

"Yeah..." The medic replied nervously.

"All right, you're the most important part of our squad here," I said as I looked at him seriously, "Don't do anything stupid alone kay? We're gonna need you when we called out for you. You understand?"

"Yes Sarge." He replied.

"Where do you come from?" Glenn asked.

"West Virginia."

"Ahh, country road." Blake said while looking up at the sky.

As they continued to talk, I realized something. I quickly searched it in my pocket and when I found it, I pulled it out. It was the letter that my father gave to me. Blood still covering half of the letter though, let's just hope it won't be difficult to read it. I took one last look at the others and opened it.

Hey there kiddo,

I believe when this letter comes to you, then the inevitable must have happened. Remember the first time I brought you to my house when you're still at the orphanage? To be honest, it felt like yesterday. But the fact is it has been years since I first found you. Time sure flies fast right? Anyway, when I first saw you, I see a lot of potential inside you kid. You're a strong, dependable, stubborn, hard-working child I've ever met. Never doubt about yourself, and I won't let you do that. You're the one who brought back joy to my wife, your mother. She always loved you.

When we were seperated and gone to this fucking war, not a day goes by I don't think about you. I missed you so much. I always pray to God that you're alright and you're still doing your duty with the airborne. I wish that we could reunite together before Christmas and celebrate it with your mother, without thinking of this war. I already planned so much stuff we would do if we're able to get back. But it seems God tells you otherwise.

Win this war for me, for the sake of the whole world, for your friends. You gotta believe in yourself that you can and must do it. This is your destiny, Daniel. Keep praying, keep moving forward, keep shooting and keep giving hell to those Krauts. That will make you a badass person that everyone will remember in the history of this world war. Huh, that was anti-climactic isn't it?

You are my son, Daniel Parker. Even our blood isn't the same but who cares? I love you. Your mother loves you. We care about you. I just want you to know one thing. Remember this my son, I will be watching you, whispering advice in your ear and guide you from your heart, if you ever need me, just know that I am a part of you. Never forget your old man okay? Don't be sad, cause I'll be waiting for you up there until your time comes. I'm proud to call you as my son.

Love,

Your rival.

"Even at this time you're still joking?" I said quietly as tears starting to roll down my cheek. I fold the letter and put it back in my pocket.

"Parker?" Rainbow called out.

"Yeah?" I replied while wiping away my manly tears.

"Are you... crying?" I looked up at her and noticed that all of them are looking at me.

"Must because of that letter..." Reed said, "What's it say?"

"Why are you so curious about my stuff?" I asked with a glare.

"Jeez dude, I'm just jokin'." He chuckled. I groaned and slumped back against the tree. The breeze slowly put my mind at ease as I tried to remember the things I used to do with my father.

"Parker," Twilight put a hoof on my knee, breaking my thoughts, "You mind if I hug you?"

"What?" I asked quite surprised, "Why do you wanna hug me again?"

"You seemed to be needing one."

I sighed. "All right Twilight." This pony, why would she even care and always offered me a hug everytime I was in a rough time?

Twilight smiled warmly at me as she stood up. She proceed to climbed onto my lap and wrap her hooves around my neck... again. "You better give me an explanation on why in the world you like hugging me so much." I said while looking at Celestia who is trying to suppress her own laugh. Same goes for Rainbow as her eyes began to water. Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie and Spike didn't mind about it at all as they continue to talk with the other soldiers. "Damn you Celestia." As I say that, Celestia nearly burst out laughing.

"Shh..." Twilight hushed, "You better take some rest."

Damn ponies.

"This isn't the Twilight Sparkle I know." I retort. Luna too was holding her stomach and her mouth in order to not laugh the shit out of her.

"You haven't known anything about me yet." The purple alicorn said again while nuzzling my neck. I looked at Shining and Cadance, instead of laughing like the Princesses, both of them are smiling warmly at me.

"Fuck this..." I mumbled.

As the other soldiers continue to talk, I felt my eyes were heavier than before. Twilight's warmth gave me so much comfort until I felt my emotions flowing through it. So, with Twilight still hugging me, I slowly closed my eyes and decided to take some rest before we move onto Carentan. This is gonna be one heck of a battle.
