Why?

Chapter 1: Why do anything at all really

Silver Bullet sat on his bunk. It was a wretched little thing, blood and other bodily fluids stained it. But alas it was his. He himself, was a stallion of below average height and build. His entire body a light grey. His mane was normally a spectacular silver. Though at the moment with how much mud was in it you couldn’t tell. He was a unicorn as well but that was mostly hidden via matted hair.

He was currently smoking a cigarette while thinking to himself. Knocking the ash off the end of his cigarette he sighed. Looking to the entrance of the hole he called shelter he found someone to be entering. It was Tempest Shadow a friend of his on the front lines.

“Hey Tempest, how’s it going?” He asked taking another drag from his cigarette.

“Bout as well as you have come to expect from me. What have you been up to?” She flopped down onto her bunk then sat back up to look at him.

“I’ve mostly just been thinking not much else to do” he cracked his knuckles.

“Yea? Thought of anything interesting. Or maybe a way to end this stupid fucking war?” She pulled her rucksack onto her bunk and begun to dig around.

“I wish. Nah, mostly just been wondering... Why. I suppose” He tossed the but of the cigarette onto the ground and put it out. Then proceeded to light another.

“Why? Why what? Why you haven’t gotten a stallion friend yet?” She pulled off her shirt and threw it at him.

Pulling the discarded shirt off of his face he balled it up and threw it back at her. Shaking his head he pulled out his knife and began to fiddle with it.

“No more of just. Why bother anymore? We’re all gonna die anyways, so why should I bother?”, he began to run the knife up and down his arm,”I mean why should I get up in the morning, why should I go and fight, why should I continue to kill, why should I live?”
By the end of his tirade he was pressing hard enough with the knife to draw blood.

Tempest looking over, quickly took the knife from him and sat it on her bunk. She moved over to his bunk in order to sit near him. Placing her arm around his shoulders she looked at him.

“Are you off your meds?” She asked sounding concerned.

“They ran out yesterday. Supply lines are cut.” He said depressedly.

“That makes sense. Listen silver. I know your tired of it all. Everyone is. But we can’t give up. If we do everyone back home will be in danger.” She said solemnly, pulling him closer to her.

He felt tears begin to well in his eyes, as he buried his face in her, still bare, chest. “I’m just so tired of the killing. Of the blood, of everything,” he sobbed, “I don’t know if I can take anymore. I almost killed myself this morning, I... I just can’t anymore”

Tempest leaned against the dirt wall of the dug in. Wrap it her arms around her sobbing friend. “Let me see the cuts silver.”

He slowly moved his arm out to the side so she could see. Tempest reached down and pulled up his sleeve. Frowning she ran her fingers over the many newly clotted over cuts on his wrist.

“Ok. For one knock that shit off or I’ll beat your ass. Secondly... Silver I understand what you are going through. I really do. But I know for a fact your stronger than this. The Silver I know wouldn’t act like this. Listen. When we win this. And we WILL win this. We’ll go home. Me and you, and we’ll get you the help that you need. Listen Silver, I love you and I’ll be there for you. So what we’ll do. Is I’ll let you get this out of your system. Then we’ll keep talking ok?”

Silver nodded. Tempest sighed and continued running her finger down the wounds. Truth was she was PISSED that silver would do some stupid shit like that. She was also somewhat upset he had to do this when she was shirtless. She wasn’t concerned about him. He was so gay it wasn’t even funny. But she was more concerned with someone walking in. She ultimately hoped that she could help him. She would confront him about it later but for now he couldn’t handle it.

“Ok,” Silver sniffed,”I’m ok now”

“Alright, but I wouldn’t call you ok. Just, silver listen. I know how tired you are. You work harder out here than most everyone. I know that stuff we do out here is terrible, I know most all of us will never forget these days no matter how hard we try. I just want you to remember. You are important, and you are strong. Most importantly you are loved by me and many others. We’ll win this thing eventually and meanwhile if you ever need a warm body to cry on. I’m here for you, through thick and thin yea?” Tempest smiled at him.

“Yea, I guess we gotta win this one. Thank you tempest.” Silver wiped the remains of tears off of his mud stained face.
Afterwards staring into space for a short while.

“Ey don’t stare perv.” Tempest said jokingly lightly nudging him. Standing tempest moved back to her bunk in order to look for a slightly less filthy shirt.

“You know just as well as I the only way I’m staring at any part of you is if you have a dick” Silver said grabbing his knife back and putting it back in its sheath.

Tempest opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted by the ear splitting sound of a siren going off.

“Well you know what time it is eh silver. Hey maybe if you do something heroic and stupid you’ll finally impress that infantrystalion you’ve had your eye on.” Tempest said pulling on a shirt.

“Oh go fuck yourself Tempest” Silver said grabbing and lighting yet another cigarette. “It’s go time” He said taking a long drag. ‘Maybe Tempest is right. Maybe we got this’
